For the past 34 years, the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE) has brought a world-class array of artwork, unique sporting crafts, and wildlife and nature conservation to the lowcountry and beyond. We sat down with Mary Roberts of SEWE and asked her to give us an idea of what SEWE is about. What is SEWE? Now in its 34th year, the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE) has grown to be the largest event of its kind in the US. A three-day celebration of wildlife art and the sporting life held throughout downtown Charleston, SC, SEWE invites us all to explore our “wild” side and pay tribute to our naturally beautiful world. SEWE’s mission is to showcase the finest wildlife and sporting art available in the world; to assist in the conservation of wildlife and the environment by creating awareness and contributing financially to designated programs; to invest in and positively influence wildlife and nature education through specialized programming and to positively impact the local and statewide economies through increased tourism. In addition to more than 500 artists and exhibitors, SEWE offers an incredible lineup of events and activities – presentations by wildlife expert Jack Hanna, conservation exhibits, sporting demonstrations, DockDogs® competitions, outdoor outfitters, parties, live music, children’s activities, and much more. Tell me about SEWE artists Each year, SEWE includes well-respected veterans, mid-career artists, and talented up-and-comers in the weekend event. One painter is selected as Featured Artist each year. Artists honored with this
distinction over the years have included Brett Smith, Carl Brenders, Luke Frazier, John Banovich, Dustin Van Wechel, and Eldridge Hardie. Kyle Sims has been selected as the 2016 Featured Artist and Stefan Savides as Featured Sculptor. John Banovich and Greg Beecham will be joining as Guest Artists. Notable new artists joining the show will be Guy Crittendon, Helen Durant, Mary Garrish, Taylor Glenn, and Chris Maynard. Collectors can view the full list of 2016 artists and available work on the website. How are artists selected? A rotating panel juries during the month of August and all applicants are notified by September 1. During the jurying process style, subject matter, medium, and price are taken into consideration. The jury works diligently to curate a diverse group of artists that represents the finest in the wildlife art genre. How does SEWE give back? SEWE is a 501 c.3. and serves as a platform for over 40 conservation groups to share their message with attendees including, but not limited to the Center for Birds of Prey / Avian Center, the Department of Natural Resources, Ducks Unlimited, and Lowcountry Open Land Trust. Others groups include NWTF, QDMA, USSWS, SCWA, Carolina Raptor Center, Palmetto Pride, Palmetto Conservation Foundation, Boykin Spaniel Rescue, Greyhound Pets of America, Clemson University Youth Learning Institute, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Edisto Island Serpentarium, US Army Corps of Engineers, The Orianne Society, Grateful Goldens Rescue, and many more. A vital part of SEWE’s mission is to provide educational opportunities and in-school
programs that connect children to the power of the outdoors. Through in-school art, nature and science programs, and SEWE conservation exhibits and demonstrations, SEWE helps children turn their passion and excitement for the outdoors into meaningful action that helps preserve and protect it forever. SEWE administers two educational art programs throughout the year, Kids for Conservation, a tri county art, photography, and poetry contest, and the South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp Program, a federal art and conservation program open to all SC students grades K-12. SEWE provides educational programming offered during SEWE event weekend which includes The Center for Birds of Prey Flight Demonstrations, Orianne Society reptile and amphibian presentations, live animal shows from Jack Hanna and Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, and more. What’s new this year? Kyle Sims has been selected as the 2016 Featured Painter, and Stefan Savides the Featured Sculptor. Guest Artists include John Banovich, Greg Beecham, and Brett Smith. Collectors can view the list of 2016 artists and available work on the website. Two new special exhibits to keep an eye out for are Taylor Glenn and Chris Maynard. Artists create original pieces live during the Quick Draw/Speed Sculpt. Working in their designated exhibit space, each participating artist will have just one hour to
create a piece from start to finish. A live auction will take place after where attendees can bid on the works. Back for a third year is the special event “Duets and Quartets”. Two painters will paint an original oil painting while two sculptors create a piece of sculpture out of plaster and clay, all to the background of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Quartet. An auction will follow. SEWE is proud to be the first annual event in Charleston to utilize the newly renovated Charleston Gaillard Center, having been under construction for the past three events. This superior performance hall and event space will house SEWE’s live performances along with outstanding local, regional, and national artists and artisans. Television personality, author, and conservationist, Jack Hanna will join SEWE once again to entertain and delight attendees at the newly renovated Gaillard Center. The three most anticipated art related events during SEWE weekend is the Duets and Quartets (mentioned above); the Quick Draw Speed Sculpt, where attendees can watch participating artists paint or sculpt an original piece from start to finish, followed by a live auction; and the VIP Preview Gala and auction, a black tie event, featuring exotic animals, wild fare, and live auction, where the 2016 Featured Painting, Power and Grace by Kyle Sims, will be one of the items available for sale. 1. Cristi compares the Ford Smith Gallery experience to visiting a vineyard versus buying wine at a store. “First, you love the wine. But at a vineyard, you also meet the growers, the people who are passionate about the wine. Then you try the different wines they make and you leave with a deeper appreciation for their talent and abilities as winemakers.” She believes that when you make those connections, you have a collector for life.
Ford Smith in Roswell Sparkling like a jewel in the heart of historic Roswell on Canton Street, the new Ford Smith Gallery emerges onto the local art scene featuring the radiantly serene landscape paintings from Atlanta’s own, worldclass artist, Ford Smith. This exclusive, artist-owned gallery is operated by veteran art team, Ford Smith and his wife, Cristi. Ford is one of the nation’s most celebrated artists with worldwide gallery representation, while Cristi runs the the art business and writes for major art industry publications. This is their fourth Ford Smith Gallery, having had two other locations in Roswell and another in Santa Fe, New Mexico. “Ford lives and paints just a few miles from our new gallery, and after traveling for 3 years doing shows in other galleries, we missed having this broader stage to present his work,” Cristi says. Having a focused environment where they can showcase the breadth and diversity of his talent makes a great deal of sense in their hometown. The gallery recently introduced The Monochrome Series from Ford, which are a pensive suite of original paintings he created mostly in black, white, and silver, quite divergent from the classic vibrant and colorful hues for which he’s known.
On most days in the Ford Smith Gallery you’ll meet Cristi and you might meet Ford. “We’re passionate about the art,” Cristi says, “And our clients are able to view the full spectrum of Ford’s talent rather than a selection.” Visitors can even see original paintings in progress at Ford’s second studio located in the back of the gallery where he paints on occasion. “Our collectors have a personal, in-depth knowledge of Ford’s varied artistic genius and they feel the untethered nature of the art that comes with having your own stage.” 1. Vicki’s “Travels” series is a nostalgic look back to some of her favorite vacation spots, including New York City, Italy, Wrightsville Beach, and Maine. Vicki uses her bold, saturated palette for her landscapes and cityscapes to emphasize the dramatic lighting and unusual angles she is enamored with. Bekah loves to paint en Plein air. She feels “like it’s a communion with the higher power that created all the beauty we see around us”. It’s a successful painting day when she can capture a tiny bit of that mood and moment in time.

13 Photography is one of those mediums of the visual arts that enthralls most people. If you see a good photograph, you know it. Subject matter, theme, there are hundreds, if not thousands of different possibilities with photography. Perhaps this is what allows all of us, at some point, to think we’re photographers when we take out our smart phones and snap a quick photo of a sunset or an interesting pattern of nature. On to Instragram and Facebook it goes and there you sit, waiting for the likes and comments with enthusiasm. However, there is much more that goes into photography and the only ones to tell us wannabes what more there is are photographers themselves. Some are professional commercial photographers, some are professional artistic photographers, and some will argue there’s no difference. Let’s explore what photographers focus on in Focus on Photography. Subject matter is one of those choices that can both be very difficult and the easiest thing you’ve ever done. Sometimes these two widely varying dualistic approaches to choosing a subject matter are a byproduct of the job at hand or the particular set of preordained circumstances in which a photographer finds himself (that’s fancy language for being in the right place at the right time). Many a photographer’s subject matter is given to them. “Subjects... are determined by my client’s needs”, says John Pagliuca, whose made his career in film and commercial photography. Photographer Blaine Owens strikes a similar pose (no pun intended, well maybe a little), “I choose my subject matter based on what my customers look for... or depending upon what they seek for wall decor”. However it’s not as easy as it seems (not meant to dissuade any aspiring photographers). Although clients may determine many photographer’s subject matter, the photographer still has to capture the emotional ambiance of what
the client wants, whether it be a wedding photograph or a photograph of a client’s classic car. Therein lies the juxtaposition and at the same time correlative nature of commercial photography and artistic photography - the photographer has to have an artistic feel for the essence of the moment. The emotional connection to the subject matter is a transcendent theme that applies itself to all forms of photography. Although ever present in commercial photography, it is most associated with artistic photography. In this the photographer uses his emotional aperture (another pun; now I’m just having fun) to capture those subjects that he/she finds emotionally rewarding. “For my personal and fine art work, I choose subjects that evoke an emotional reaction to me”, says Pagliuca. It is this emotional connection to their work that unites all photographers in their perpetual, esoteric yet exoteric quest to find that one “thing” that they’re looking for in each photograph, whether commercial or artistic. This quest is a never ending process for photographers, regardless of skill, age, or experience. It is in this pursuit of every photographers unicorn that Pagliuca passes on some advise, “take lots of pictures and look at them with a critical eye, figuring out what worked and what didn’t work and why”. There may not be quality in quantity, but it’s only through trial and error that true connective artistry can develop.

17 A representative of the Eno River Association will make a brief presentation of their mission and activities at the show’s opening reception on January 29th. The Hillsborough Gallery of Arts will accept donations to the Eno River Association throughout the duration of the show at the gallery’s front desk.
Poets scheduled to participate in “Flow” include:
Flow “Flow”, presented by The Hillsborough Gallery of Arts, is an art show that will meld poetry and the visual arts into a celebration of the Eno River. This show will feature art work in a wide variety of media by HGA gallery artists in concert with original poetry by local writers. “Flow” will run January 25th through February 21st, 2016. The opening reception for “Flow” is Friday, January 29th from 6 to 9 pm. The “Flow” exhibition is dedicated to the Eno River Association. This local organization’s mission is to conserve and protect the natural, cultural, and historic resources of the Eno River Basin. The art and poetry presented through this unique cross-pollination will deal with or be inspired by nature, environmental conservation, or the river itself. This inspiration will take form in painting, sculpture, pottery, textile, jewelry, glass, and the written word. Come see the “Flow” of work of these diverse artists. 2016 will also mark the beginning of the Eno River Association’s 50th year in existence. This art show featuring work of local artists and writers will help to begin a year of celebrating the Eno River Association’s many activities in stewardship, conservation, and education.
