4th Annual Plein Air Richmond 2016 June 19-26 Loryn Brazier of Brazier Gallery started Plein Air Richmond in 2012. Proceeds from 2016 sales benefit the Richmond SPCA, an independent non-profit organization bringing animals into the lives of humans since 1891. Plein Air Richmond is a wonderful weeklong painting event bringing together 30 juried artists from across the United States and Canada who paint scenic views of Richmond. Painting locations in the past have included, but are not limited to, iconic Richmond scenes such as Maymont, Carytown, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Rockets Landing, Belle Isle, the James River, the VMFA, Church Hill, Agecroft Hall, Shockoe Bottom, and around the Fan. Typically, participating Plein Air artists paint in oil and watercolor, capturing the essence of Richmond’s scenic locations with the usual subject unpredictability and finesse plein artists are known for. The event culminates with a series of events during the last weekend starting with a ticketed preview party Friday, June 24 from 5-8pm, at Brazier Gallery, 1616 West Main Street. Tickets cost $75
Saturday, June 25 from 9:30-11:30am artists will do a “Fast & Fresh” quick paint in Carytown. Plein Air Richmond is still accepting artists for this event. Anyone can participate if they fill out the form on pleinairrichmond.com and mail a check of $10 to Brazier Gallery. These paintings will be for sale as soon as they are finished. The exhibit for all Plein Air Richmond paintings will be open to the public Friday, June 24, 8-9:30pm, Saturday, June 25, 10am-5pm, and Sunday, June 26, 125pm. It is a fun event and we encourage people to come watch the artists paint during the week. Plein Air Truest Form Plein Air Painting derives from the French equivalent meaning “open (in full) air.” Capturing a moment in time, in all its natural perfections and imperfections is a calling of true depiction. The truest form of capture can best be assertained by plein air artists who seek to bring the world into art by bringing the art process into the world. Light, color, composition, can all be pre-planned but in plein air the artist loses complete control of the elements and depicts our surroundings as our surroundings dictate. The wonderful array of possible subjects create an endless amount of inspiration that capture, or discover an oft-depicted subject in just the right composition or setting. To celebrate the artists (and galleries who represent them) who “go out” and find their subjects in plein air we offer a small taste of the artists themselves and their creative process.

Anne Blair Brown was born in Rhode Island and is currently based in Nashville, Tennessee. Her work centers on both rural and urban landscapes, people, and interior spaces. Brown tries to paint en plein air whenever possible. In her words, “Painting on location creates an intimacy with the subject that informs my studio work. It heightens my sense of spontaneity, and that energy is translated to the canvas.” Anne Blair Brown’s oil painting “Out and About” is an excellent example of the loose, painterly brush strokes desired in plein air paintings. ten depict landscapes but “Out and About” is unique because it captures the mood of a fun night on the town outside the Tobacco Company, one of Richmond’s classier bars. Unfortunately, Brown is unable to join us for Plein Air Richmond this year, but her paintings can still be found at Brazier Gallery. The American landscape – endless skies, calming waters, and the varied shores of the East and West coasts are Cople’s passion and she travels far and wide to cap-
ture her subjects. “I love painting the landscape en plein air. In the outdoors, exposed to the sun, wind and rain, you can incorporate not only what you see, but also the sounds and the smells of the landscape. All of this lets me convey the sense of wonder I feel at the subject”, says Cople. Undeterred by nature’s extremes, Cople has painted in blizzards in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah; on the precarious cliffs of Monhegan Island, Maine; in howling gales off the California coast; and, of course, in both summer and winter in her beloved Eastern Shore of Maryland and Potomac River in Virginia. She paints with expressive brushwork, a finely honed sense of color and powerful composition. Cople received a classical Fine Art education at The George Washington University with an emphasis on drawing and composition. From the time Bethanne began painting professionally and entering competitions, she has been earning recognition for her work. Most recently, she received an Honorable Mention at the American Impressionist Society Annual National 2015 exhibit. 3. Inspired by the beautiful waterways of the coast, Karen Lee Crenshaw re-discovered a love of plein air painting in 2007. “A sense of place. That is the goal of my landscape paintings, for the viewer to ‘see’ what I am seeing and to feel that is a place they have been or would like to visit. Plein air painting inspires me to capture the quality of the light that sets off that connection.” She has also painted from photographs that were taken before Hurricanes Bertha and Fran, records of a “vanishing landscape,” which contain scenes that may be changing as development encroaches. “It is a great source of enjoyment for me to hear people come into my studio and recognize, with nostalgia, where the paintings were made.” Karen Lee Crenshaw has lived in Jacksonville for the last sixteen years where she maintains Crenshaw Art Studio in her home in Jacksonville, NC and at ArtExposure, located in Hampstead, NC. Linda Hollett-Bazouzi, artist. www.lindahollett.net Linda Hollett-Bazouzi is a landscape painter of local, regional, and international scenes. Armed with a paint knife, she travels with her paints around the world and down the street. She does not consider
her plein air works studies, but rather finished works that stand on their own, that may or may not inform later studio pieces. Her style demands an alla prima approach, not only because of changing light, but because her knife work lays down paint quite differently from a brush. She paints quickly, to capture THAT cloud, THAT tree, THAT moment in a time that will never be again. The first two weeks in April she travelled to The Netherlands, where she painted for nine days in Katwijk aan Zee and Noordwijkerhout. For three of those days she was fighting the wind, the rain, and the cold to take a workshop with Dutch plein air painter Roos Schuring. Traveling alone gives her the freedom to work at a pace different from many travelers. This trip resulted in 14 paintings in seven days. Hollett-Bazouzi is currently lead artist for the Virginia Plein Air Painters, based around Richmond, Virginia. NC Mountain Arts Adventure A Studio Tour Nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Alleghany County is a group of sixteen artisans and craftspeople who make up the North Carolina Mountain Arts Adventure. These various studios and galleries open their doors to the public the third weekend in June and again in October to provide an adventurous and educational self-guided journey in celebration of creativity. Discover the techniques and processes within the art you admire, get to know the artists, watch them at work, and even shop in their personal settings. As you follow the tour map, you will navigate your way through an area rich in natural beauty and home to the North Carolina Mountain Arts Adventure. This eclectic group of people came together six years ago with a vision to support and nurture the visual arts in Alleghany County. For those who love the still image, Charlottesville’s LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph is the only place to be this summer. From June 13th-19th, Festival goers will have the rare opportunity to see and hear from an international roster of eleven featured artists, participate in enhanced educational programs, visit world-class exhibitions, attend outdoor projections, and engage in free photography-related community events. Photography Exposing the shutter Photography is one of the most interconnected mediums of art we have today. The proximity individuals, both enthusiasts and professionals have to the art form creates enthusiasm for capturing the “right shot”. Although we all have experienced the thrill of photography at some point, the art form of photography is a learned skill, embodying the intimatcy photographers have with their subject matter and how they choose to share their connection with the viewer. Light, composition, exposure, development, all play a part in how photographers convey their emotions on print and paper. What follows is a small group of photograpahers and galleries who discuss their love of photography and how they choose to express the right moment with the “right shot”.

Mike Basher captures his sublime photographs in a way that might be thought of as non-traditional these days… with large sheets of black and white film. Working with what many consider an antique box camera, his distinct, delicately crafted compositions offer a unique view into any scene. Conveying a tranquil simplicity, and often even a bit of surrealism, Mike’s unique style of fine art black and white photography has quickly become a special interest of private collectors with exquisite taste. His 20-year career as a photographer has taken Mike all over the globe, photographing campaigns for brands like Under Armour, Reebok, and The North Face, working with sports greats such as Michael Phelps, Jordan Spieth, and Andy Murray.

Susan Jones was drawn to old hand colored photographs so she decided to study techniques and media to create a contemporary version. Photographs for handcoloring are printed with an eye to where the color will be applied while maintaining good contrast in the black and white areas. Using Photoshop allows her to blend layers and make corrections easily. The photographs are printed to resemble the under-painting technique, grisaille, used by The Old Masters. Glazing is created by applying color in thin, transparent layers of colored pencil. Most of Susan’s current work is created using 5 pencils; cyan, yellow, magenta, indigo and white, giving the work a special depth. Susan’s choice of subject matter reflects her training as an illustrator and documentarian; she loves to photograph the world around her and hopes to share with the viewer a different way of seeing. 3.
