Editor’s Letter

September means spring! This months issue of Eternal has had a major focus on my personal growth over the last coupe of weeks. These days I don’t get alot of time to self reflect, although the last couple of weeks granted me some time to find myself and gather the busyness of thoughts. Beauty is something I am continually seeking, regardless of the from she may take, I am in awe. It is my hope that we never lose sight of the things that bring gusto and joy to our lives, the things that move us physically, spiritually and emotionally, the things that make us feel. Enjoy the issue. JOSHUA SGARANO

Yes, we are torn my friends between the world of old and new. For some alienated themselves from their former sleves, in I believe, an attempt to find themselves. Yet, have they not arrived empty handed?

No, I believe we must relearn. For we are not our own and no amount of suffering we bear, will prove otherwise. Therefore, We are like children; Becoming older of age Yet younger, to the beauty And majesty of truth.

Then why dear brothers, do we punish oursleves? inflicting pain for knowledge . Surely we are the fools of fools, for the wise know they are fools.

AND EACH SEASON I AM BORN WITH EYES GLINTING UPON DAYS TO COME 16

Dear child, see to it you never lose your passion for wonder. Wonder is the gateway to miracles and miracles are things which appear to violate the natural order. Wonder always appeals to imagination, inspiring glory and reverence.

MOODYZADA It was one of those last minute things - story of my life. Zada and I had set aside time to shoot so we could finally introduce her plublicly as an Art House Girl. Another late night, spending over 5 hours preping the walls, ceiling and floor

with newspapers. This shoot was inspired by a last minute idea to do something fun and outside the box of what I’d normally do, I think that’s why we ended up enjoying the process, it just had all the right ingredients to be a memorbale shoot.

Art is always about experimenting with expression. For the most part my art personally has changed alot in recent times and I really think it’s for the best. There was a time there where everything was about perfection and attaining this super

polsihed look. To be honest, I really lost myself in that for awhile, I’d even stress out about what people would think and how they would respond - something every artists goes through. Honestly it’s easy than most think, everyone in today’s world feel the need to give their opinion and further more, they feel entitled to project that opinion onto your life.

IT HAS TO BE REAL, IT HAS TO MEAN SOMETHING IN THAT MOMENT AND THEN YOU HAVE TO BE WILLING TO LET GO OF IT SO YOU CAN LAY HOLD OF THE NEXT

So does that mean I’m struggling with identity or my vision as an artist? Absolutely not. I’m just in a place where I want to experiment more, push new boundaries and drawn new lines so to speak.

I’ve really come along way, everything is about that moment and the way I feel or see it. I don’t ever want to repeat myself, or revisit concepts I’ve already lived.

As a photographer I’m inspired by many things like light, colours and scenery. Everything is a potential photoshoot location. Sometimes I’ll see a location and think what direction the sun will be later in the day, what way is the wind blowing, where would I best position myself to capture that moment and that’s exactly what happened with this shoot. Emily and I had spoken about doing a Boho style shoot and we were driving back from another location as we looked over late in the afternoon and saw the sun flooding this field with sunlight and thought that’s it... we have our location for the Boho shoot! The very next day we headed back out late in the afternoon and set up with Emily facing away from the sun. I used a strobe with softbox for fill light on Emily and apart from a little wind it was a perfect afternoon. We spent about an hour there in beautiful light and captured some gorgeous images. Emily is such a pleasure to work with, she always looks lovely and the shoots are always filled with laughs. www.stephenmarkphotographer.com

access we have to new technologies and the wealth of knowledge that is readily available to us today, is nothing sort of incredible. However, let us not forget the hardwork, adjustment, pain and I think it’s true in life, with all the stretching that is required for that success stories we hear/read about, next level we so eagerly want! it almost seems as though anyone can become an ‘overnight success’ I had a meeting with a client the and for the most part I would other day in the beautiful city of agree with that statement. is going to turn against you, it’s going to fight you like a hungry animal! If you can afford the outfit, but lack the discipline to wear it in a way that’s going to look good, and think just because you bought the outfit it’s going to automatically look cute, your foundations will show.

As a fashion photographer and model, I understand if you have an outfit with the wrong foundations under it (yes I’m talking about those extra pounds!) that outfit

See, the gift is in the grind! That pain you face today, the pride you have stripped away lays a foundation for your future success story! 31

This world is forever changing, your life will be forever changing! When the storms come (and they will), what you have built your life upon will determine whether you rise or fall. Storms come to test your foundation, to see if you’re grounded. The test comes again and again, if you’re grounded, you graduate. So here’s to all the graduates out there! You can do this no matter how many times you have to take the test and the ones that follow! Remember you never fail, you either win or learn! Here’s to the future success stories! Here’s to the greatest year of our lives built on unmovable, fixed foundations!

entertainment industry whether that be acting or music. I love the feeling of performing it gives me an adrenalin rush being up on stage very similar to sky diving haha. The biggest challenge would be being away from family & friends, missing out on friends 21st’s, birthdays and social events. Its definitely tough seeing everyone having a good time whilst I’m travelling but I love it and I know they all understand. I make sure to catch up with them where I can and keep in touch through social media. Touring has taught me how important it is to look after both my physical and mental health so I have strategies put in place such as eating health foods, exercising daily, meditating, reading, setting new goals on a daily basis etc to keep motivated and focussed.

Sammy, I understand you’ve been in the industry for awhile now and have seen your fair share of the ups and downs. Can I ask firstly, what inspired you to become a DJ? And did you make the transition from an ordinary life into this alternate lifestyle?

Thanks for having me Josh. I was always around the club life style as a teenager. I immediately after turning 18 started out as a promoter as I thought it was cool to get paid to party. There was an opportunity at my local Wednesday night who where running a DJ competition at the time and I thought I would give it a go. I was terrible at first but it was a lot of fun haha. From there I got in contact with a few clubs around Sydney and started out as a DJ/Promoter. I made sure to meet as many people as possible and network at every opportunity which was got me to where I am today. There wasn’t to much transition involved in changing my lifestyle. I always had a feeling I would be doing something in the

I find your story so interesting, because as I understand it, you’re career in DJing has brought you some pretty incredible travel opportunities recently; 35

“ENJOY MAKING MISTAKES AND LEARNING FROM THEM ” It all comes down to having a positive attitude, believing in yourself and taking every opportunity that comes your way. I really abide by the law of the attraction, the secret and God. I put all my faith in those 3 areas and its really helped me achieve some massive goals and it’s going to help me achieve my long term goals. Its definitely something different overcoming a normal mindset. I always believed I was going to be and do something special. I would always be thinking outside the classroom never inside. I would say to people, enjoy making mistakes

can you tell us, was this one of the long term goals for your career, or did you happen to stumble into it? At first I just wanted to play out of Sydney, then it was in another state, then another country and now the goal is to perform Tomorrowland Main stage, Ultra Miami Music Festival, be in the DJ mag top 10, have a few platinum number 1 hit records as well as act in Hollywood movies. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to some amazing place across Asia for example. I love it over there, the people are so friendly, so humbled and just genuinely appreciate electronic dance music. Everyone is just there for a good time. Having overcome the challenges of an alternate lifestyle and the struggles you’ve had along the way, what are some of the tips you would suggest on overcoming the normality mindset society paints and most importantly, how someone can break into the entertainment industry while maintaining who they are as an individual?

36

and learning from them as that teaches you valuable life skills. Don’t rush the process, enjoy where you are at and strive for where you want to be. To break into the entertainment industry i would say you have to be willing to sacrifice short term enjoyment for long term success and staying true to who you are as a person. Be yourself, have a personality and people will love you.Â

EXPRESSIONS

OF HUMANITY

There’s something about street photography that has always gripped me. Perhaps it has something to do with the authenticity of life happening right before you’re eyes. Alot of what I shoot is staged/posed and always has the expected outcome of hyping an event or subject. This is usually coveyed through the still image and motion picture by the outfits, locations, energy and angeles used on the subjets, however as I said before, it has this ‘staged’ feeling about it.

Street photogrphy is where I started funny enough, today I don’t get alot of time to hit the streets, however when I do, I feel at home.

ART DOES NOT HAVE TO HAVE A PURPOSE - IT DOES NOT EXIST IN ORDER TO TEACH, TO URGE A MORAL POINT, TO ENTERTAIN, TO DISTRACT, TO AMUSE, TO SERVE BEAUTY, TO SUPPORT A REVOLUTION, TO DISGUST, TO CHALLENGE, TO STIMULATE OR TO CHEER; IT EXISTS CHIEFLY FOR IT’S OWN SAKE. 38

NEVER NEVER TOO TOOLATE LATE

39

That’s where the world has gone wrong. Ok, let’s be honest, I think as Artists we have all succumb in one way or another to ‘selling out’ and taking the path of mainstream or what might be deemed exceptable.

I don’t think any of this is by accident, the more people I meet, the further I travel and the greater collection of experiences I gather, the more apparent it becomes that we are all connected. That consciousness is a colaboration beween subject and object and expression is it’s tongue.

It really shows in the world we live in today, people are becoming more and more alike they practise the same hobbies, they wear the same clothes, they wear the sake fake smile and use the same instagram filters. That’s what I love most about the street though, everyone is too busy going about their daily life to put on theur fake smile or role play the character they convey at the office. The streets are honest, everything you see is real time, it’s happening right before your eyes and there isn’t time for the subjects to pose. Photography is this amazing tool for self realisation and expression. I suppose many of the arts are, however, photography allows you to study people from a close setting (in portraiture )and the distant obseravting spectrum (in street photography). There is some much you can tell about a person by the way they walk, the clothes they wear, the food they eat and the way the perform small and simple tasks like drinking coffee. People are fasinating to say the least. I BELIEVE WE ARE ALL ARTISTS, BECAUSE WE ALL DESIGN THE WORLD WE LIVE IN EACH AND EVERYDAY. Expression is our gift to this world, it’s our mark or our finger print if you will. Have you ever looked at the face of an infant and notice the light refracting in their eyes? The facial expressions that are arguably universal across all cultres.
