Parasite Architecture Social Housing Mixed Use Complex

CREDITS The student projects were designed by me and my partner/s, as credited in every project’s brief description, except for my graduation project, which was solely of my own authorship. Every drawing, model, and image in this portion of the portfolio are accredited to all of the participants of that project.

Parasite Architecture: Repurposing of garage building via parasitic subtraction operation 2017 (will be further developed as an experimental project) Rio de Janeiro’s city centre Arthur Gama This is the project part of my graduation thesis which consisted of surveying and mapping of simbiotic architecture both geographycally and historically, followed by its classification according to a biology inspired model. In the first part I tried to gather examples of when a buildings relation to its host became parasitic and then, in the second one I experimented with this case study. I chose an iconic building in Rio’s city centre, a 14 floor enormous garage, with a bus terminal on the lower ground floor and retail shopping in the upper ground floor. Its top floors had an university campus and administrative facilities. The remaining 12 floors were all ocupied by car parking. I decided to respect the mixed programme already present in the original building and intensify it, yet keeping it open enough that in the future new functions that I couldn’t have predicted would be able to ocupy this structure. The only thing I knew I had to completely destroy in order to achieve the parasitic nature of this intervention was the main function of the building, the car parking. Given the abundant space, the subtraction of circular ameboid-like volumes seemed like the best approach to create not only different possibilities of views and connections inside and on the surface or the building but to bring natural light and air into it, that way only the memory of the parasite is present and the building becomes unobstructed and more open. The negative spaces left by the parasitic operation imbue the building with an inviting aura of curiosity that would attract people and invite them to use the various spots in creative new ways. Some of the new activities I thought could happen in this new “cultural events centre” are fashion runways, public libraries, martial arts schools and tournaments, big temporary events, dance classes and night parties, rooftop bars and city observatory, etc.

Social housing project 2016

Porto Maravilha, Rio de Janeiro’s city centre Arthur Gama, Beatriz Dourado and João van Gennip This proposal for a social housing complex in the heart of Rio’s newly redesigned waterfront for the 2016 Summer Olympics resonates with new sustainability standards for real estate ventures in the area such as using solar power and rainwater recycling. In order to make the project viable as a social solution to the city’s evolving housing problems, we decided to treat the ground level as a revenue generating comercial zone to help lower the complex’s operating costs. This comercial zone is the child of Portzamparc’s open block and Corbusier’s pilotis, having different parks, sports venues and spaces that may be rented, like an gallery for public exhibitions, restaurants, retail outlets, etc. Having nine different typologies of apartments, from one bedroom studios to three bedroom units, the building has 13,8% accessible apartments for disabled people amongst its 181 units. It also has 4 main vertical circulation accesses that connect the building’s five floors to the open block like plaza on ground level. The fifth and top floor is where the shared facilities like a barbecue terrace and common rooms are located.

Mixed use complex 2016

Leblon, Rio de Janeiro’s most expensive neighbourhood Arthur Gama and Gabriela Taricano The spot we were assigned to work with in this atelier is a 30,000 sq. meters located in the most exclusive and expensive neighbourhood in Rio. It belongs to the military police and was valued above 220 mi. reais in 2008. Taking that into consideration, we opted for a mixed use programme. The lower part of the lot, which is also its most public part, was designed to have a sports programme with multi purpose fields, elderly exercise equipments, a childrens park, a skate park and a building which houses locker rooms and a swimming pool. The main building provides a connection between the front and the back accesses via a semi buried passageway and also the lower and upper parts of the terrain, creating a circuit between its top floor external court and the terrain’s higher level park. The building’s position facing the topography also generates two plazas. This building contains restaurants and retail stores on the ground and top floors and offices in the second floor. On the higher portion of the lot is located a more private programme: student housing. Not only there are many universities both private and public in Rio and a deficit of proper student accomodation facilities, but also our lot is located near one of the city’s biggest university, PUCRio, which reinforces the programme inserted here. Furthermore, we chose several fenestration and facade treatments as well as flooring and some external equipments as can be seen in the references below.
