From the first aspect we were asked to research circle item in our life. My first circle items collection come from my daily research graphic design folder. I picked up lots of pattern design in circle from travel journal photos, and rest of my primiary research result was coming from pictures I saved from internet. -2-

First expirement circle making were light in darness. Photo taken by Canon 5D MARK II, light provide by my iphone. I didn’t consider too much about what I am doing during that time, just simply keep changing position and rotated arm or hand.

-5-

Second enspirement was based on a large format piece of paper (about 2.2 Ă—1.4 metre) I tried all of the body I can move to hold a pen, drew circle on paper. It was still meanless but interesting. -6-

Continual from second circle making, focusing on human body’s movement with circle, I come to find more picture in meaning. It’s hard to tell myself have to stop consider too much about meaning in circle.

-7-

I summarized my interested research topic related to meaning of circle, or anything have meaning in context. The key words were: “DISTANCE, RELATIONSHIP, MOVEMENT, BODY, HUMAN” After that I suddenly stopped research images, to stop my brain keep thinking complicated thing in module 1.

-8-

This step was relax and free, I tried different material texture and 3D to make circle pattern. -9-

These are the pictures most inspired me on final project. When people gather together, they always group as a circle, everyone keep same distance but still have connection with others. It interest me, circle means a common relationship between people in social context.

I considered what form could be presented for the final outcome. Moving image definitely is the best way to show the movement and changing between different objects. This piece of brain storm was drawing after I made up desicion to make a stop motion animation. It demonstrated what is my very first concept on doing this moving image; to decode and encode people’s relationship in nowday. - 18 -

My first visit to 4D model shop was recommended by tutor Linda. 4D model shop has variety of mini Before I saw actual model in shop, model of human. I have no idea about my back up plan was buy green solider pack from Ebay and spary them in white. what should use in stop motion, just quick look at all size and material of models they could offer, and take photos. My requirements at buying model Unfortunally I didn’t find exactly were: what I want in store. Model size is also a question need to be consider. I went back REMOVEABLE home and took photos of paper stereotype - keep all model easy to move that can , testing how big model I can use. take photo quickly Finally I found best model size was between 3cm-6cm; minimal size allow UNDER THE BUGET camera lens ( I only have Canon 24- nothing to say too much 105mm)zoom in to keep one model big enough in image, maximum size ensure STAND WITHOUT SUPPORT - some of model need a pin stick behind to my desk won’t overcrowded when all models come into one photo. support stand, it cost too much time

My second visit to 4D model shop have a big surprise. The laser cut wood model pack which I didn’t see them last time, were exactly suits my requirement. The hight of model is 3.5cm, each pack include two models in different gender and two wood holders. I finally bought 10 of them.

The thread I use was from John lewis. Those thread were wasting material from Design research project- exhibition piece. I collected most of the thread after they take down the exhibition and keep them. That’s why I have so many colorful selections (up to 28 colours), needto appreciate my group.

Camera testing photo on this page was taked while I was testing camera and tripod’s distance from the desk. My work place is tiny and nonprofessional, I tried my best to use minimal equipment to set up a moving image workshop. Wall and desk was covered with long white rolled paper from Wilkoson.

Working process on first day. For keep camera not change position while taking photos, I use EOS Utility APP linked to camera by USB, I can click laptop instead of shutter.

- 26 -

I tooked over400 hundred of photos on total, about 350 images were selected to be edit in the video.

Fission is a audio editing APP for cutting audio shorter and reedit the wave. BGM for the stop motion just have 01:26 minutes, it comes from a 4 minutes long audio.

Feedback Log Date: 30/09/2013 Tutor: David& Linda My first idea is drawing circle by human body, record numbers and movement on paper. I took tutor’s suggestion, using large format paper to document drawing. It’s a nice idea that we should do some extra large format experiment, not limited by sketch book size. Also they mentioned Date:07/10/2013 Exhibition visits in London Feel very exciting to research circle elements on the go. Internet is a way to research but not the only way. Date:14/10/2013 Tutor: David I feel my recent research step away from module 1, research result always related to circle meaning in context. Tutor’s recommandation was given by following my research and sketching, such like chakra in Indian and some short video. Their recommend research keywords are interesting and strong Date:28/10 Tutor: David Final critique of model 1 I pin up a poster of variety materials in experimentation. Started interested in 3d model to make circle pattern so that I can control the distance between each element and adjust it easily.

Date: 18/11 Tutor: David, Linda Poster pin up day to display model 2 research so far. I showed my interested in circle with relationship and people connection. David confirm it is an interesting topic and could be developed. At the same time too many chinese student select yin-yang and ancient chinese money to pin up. Feel everyone have to jump out from the culture background and think big. Date: 02/12 Tutor: Linda A day discussing design piece proposal and story board. I was planning to make a stop motion animation but struggling at selecting model. Linda told me there is a model shop named 4D in central London. She also confirm my idea and push me enrich more detail of storyboard. The model in my moving image project were bought from 4d model shop. Date: 06/01 Tutor: David, Linda The short moving image video. Tutor suggested me cut down the Facebook logo at the end of video and extend subtitle lasting time. Some interest idea come from our daily life, example like people always choosing bus seat away from others until too crowed, From distance between people in real life but not online, it is an interesting aspect to develope my project and adding more photos .
