My extend major project is design an inexistent future interaction system for Tianjin Hospital to improve patient dignity during their stay. Redesign the way information is provided to patients, so that what a patient actually needs to know is communicated in a way that can be understood by all and easy to use. A screen based system links to patient’s bedside television with ward information improved communication between the hospital and the patient with their families, and could get timely patient feed back.

How it works There is a background application for hospital staff to personalize the information by editing patient’s personal info. Info function including time round route to clear patients schedule and remind their main doctors and nurses. Library (including music, book and film) and mail function will enrich their spare time informatively, build up connection with patients and the world outside the hospital.

A friend of mine provide her working environment in hospital that improve my idea easier to come true, final concept links system and personal television realistically that solve technical problem, unnecessary to add a digital screen on the table.
First concept I start to consider what is patient most want to know when they have to stay in bed and try to figure out the issue in context. I made a survey on Xinlang Weibo (An social website which similar to Twitter in Chinese) to collect people’s viewpoint to approach this question, it was an open survey that do not have answer selections. The result shows people strongly want to track their info by system that they needn’t to keep asking nurse or doctor, they also hope hospital could provide flexible menu to fit their eating preference. Most of comments motioned they don’t want to waste time on stay in bed without doing anything, patient could take books or magazines to hospital but it means they have limited choice and books take too much place in their room, especially for patient who will have long time stay in hospital.

When I was exploring layout and functions, I planned to put all information in one page and look similar like a blog. People could view info by just clicking button up and down. Soon I found it pushes too much information towards patient and text crowed full screen NAME: Alex Phing ISSUE NUMBERS: 2189643882 BACK HOME IN

WARD ROUTINES
DAILY HOSIPITAL Broadening access to specialized care: The growth of telemedicine connects patients to the caregivers For nearly 13 years, Providence Care has been the hub for telemedicine in southeastern Ontario, connecting patients from distant communities to their psychiatrists or specialists via high definition cameras and video-conferencing technology – all in real time. In 2001 a pilot project between Providence Care and Queen’s University brought mental health supports to rural communities in Ontario through telepsychiatry. The program has since expanded to encompass access to stroke rehabilitation, wound care consultation, pain management consultation, lower limb amputation rehabilitation and even access to infertility specialists for patients in all areas of the province.

My second testing idea was build up a visual system that makes patient feel relax by seeing natural landscape photography. To avoid copyright problem, I picked up few images from my traveling photography and edited them as low contrast soft color images.

such as a local hospital, it could reflect the history, culture and location etc… Picture in system should not only look good in visual but also release patients’ pressure and feel approachable. Tianjin Hospital is my hometown famous hospital, local culture reflect it is located in central Tianjin. Food is a good topic to reflect local culture, I researched famous food in Tianjin and finally chose egg roll and transfer it into illustration to make ‘menu’ icon. The reason why I chose this food is because its recognizable shape, and it has a long history in Tianjin’s food culture. Illustration for mailbox also comes from real mailbox in Tianjin, I would like to connect visual system and hospital context to communicate people and feels system friendly.

Evaluation This project gives me a great influence at independent thinking, especially when I keep asking myself “How to figure out the issue around us and try to find out solution.” My tutors’ strong suggestions pushed me approach the answer. I make a lot experiments to understand audience’s situation and try to imagine myself as a patient. The development of concept also reflects my situation was getting close to audience’s real demand. I’m glad I could come out this idea and develop it, but it could be improved if I visit a hospital instead of taking an interview of my doctor friend. I hope it could be more human considered and thoughtful. I strongly wish to cooperate with a programmer to bring this system to life. My design still have a lot unthoughtful details need to improve during realistic testing.
