Synthetic sponge Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing the branching structure of a synthetic sponge. This structure is based on that of natural sponges, which are primitive aquatic animals. Magnification: x45 when printed 10 centimetres wide.

Amorphous Carbon Structure This carbon structure is visually a highly disordered structure. The disorder of this structure allows it to have many available bonds and and is responsible for building more complex carbon based molecules.

Fullerene Variations

Here are some larger fullerene molecules that consist of a different number of atoms, each creating a unique structure. Notice how the transitional ones, between spherical combinations, are oval shaped.

http://www.arch.mcgill.ca/prof/ sijpkes/arch374/winter2002/ psbmonro/

More Fullerene Variations These variations of fullerene are meant to combine with other elemental molecular structures. We see the beginning of what is known as the Nano tube. Nanotubes The nano tube is a variation of fullene that has become elongated in its structural patterning due to its molecular arrangements. They are extremely strong and cannot be crushed. The only way to destroy them is to break a bond at the molecular scale.

Fractal Pattern Growth This is an example of the fractal pattern growth of carbon fibers from nanotubes. A fiber is made up of bundles of bundles of bundles of Nanotubes aligned in the same directions, making the fiber extremely strong but also extremely light in weight.

http://inhabitat.com/ habitat-67-montreals-prefabpixel-city/

Canadian architect Moshe Safdie designed and built this extraordinary experimental housing complex made up of modular concrete units for the 1967 World Expo in Montreal. Named Habitat 67, the apartment complex was Safdie’s attempt to redesign urban living, provide affordable housing and create a community complete with shops and a school. All of the units were prefabricated on-site, and each has its own rooftop garden space located on the roof of the neighbor below.

Biowall. Prototype. 2006. Rachel Wingfield (British, b. 1978) and Mathias Gmachl (Austrian, b. 1974) Loop, pH (UK, est. 2003)Biowall is a woven scaffold that becomes a partition wall when colonized by living plants. In their attempt to create a modular building system based on structures found in nature, the designers looked at several geometries, such as Penrose tiles (pairs of shapes that tile the plane only aperiodically) and Synetic structures (airy, lacelike basketries of thin arcs patterned in curvilinear triangulation). They finally opted for a dodecahedron weave of twelve small circles made of one-millimeter fiberglass rods around which plants would grow and creep. The designers explain that “the construction is based on the principle of self-similarity, translating a biological construction from the nanoscale to the macro scale. It can be seen in our natural environment in the formation of bubbles, living cells, and water molecules.

ORIGAMI/KIRIGAMI http:// arkinetblog.wordpress.com/ 2009/11/20/ron-resch-paperfolding-origami-tessellation/

the work of Ron Resch, a visionary mathematician and designer who was one of first to explore the architectural potential of 3D tessellated structures in the 1960’s and 70’s. We can find his influence in the current works of many architects that design with digital tools and parametric architectural forms. His credits include patents for “selfsupporting structural units” using tessellation techniques, as well as “geometric designs” (structures for spaceships) for Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979).
