Melody Thornton, The Suicide Flowers - I started my suicide flower artworks back in 2022. It was a reaction to the many suicides in the media, in particular young girls and boys – I was devastated. The unimaginable pain of the parents and the internal suffering these young men and women must be going through to make the ultimate decision seemed beyond my grasp. To put a noose around the neck of a beautiful flower in full bloom seemed as senseless as the act of suicide itself.

The backlighting outlines the main figure and adds to the texture of the floor, which in turn mimics the abstract painting on the wall.

Milne Publishing is proud to present Artist Talk Magazine issue 31. This issue is dedicated to celebrating all aspects of art.

Everyone featured within this issue have given interesting, in-depth, honest accounts about themselves, their work, views and ideas. In addition to the amazing images of the work they have produced, which I know you the reader will enjoy and be inspired by.

Thank you to everyone who entered our open call.

The cover of this issue is by Stephen Harper, titled Passage No 9

“ This photograph was taken in the

Musee Soulages in Rodez, France, dedicated to the works of the renowned French abstract painter. I saw this image for its geometric shapes of the window frames and the wall displaying the painting. The semi-obscure blinds and the buildings outside were a bonus.

Lining up the shot, the main person walked in and then towards me. I had to capture him at the appropriate position to enhance my composition. I was also aware of the second person almost out of frame left. I was not sure what was going to happen but if that person walked into the frame, it wouldn’t be good. But I got my “decisive moment”.

Virtually full frame, very little editing, just a little bit of darkening. ”

Stephen Harper practised as a professional photographer working from a studio in central London for over 20 years. This was principally commercial work, commissions from London-based advertising and graphic design agencies, as well as for corporate brochures. This work was all analogue using film cameras, Polaroids, and often involved producing high quality silver-gelatine B&W prints from an in-house professional darkroom. Some of his personal work was exhibited in central London spaces.

After pursuing a different career, he rekindled his interest in the medium around 2015, having not taken any new photographs until then: but he now uses digital cameras, producing fine art inkjet prints from a professional printer.

The photographs are of urban and semi-urban landscapes characterised by strong graphic shapes of domestic, commercial, and industrial buildings, some modern, some from an earlier era. His eye is drawn to a hidden geometry and particularly the textured forms created by old concrete, rendering that has weathered, doors and windows often neglected and distressed, becoming almost abstract in composition.

He travels frequently through France and knows the south-west of France well, particularly the

department of the Lot. A large proportion of his current Vestiges Series are of facades taken in

the main city of Cahors or in the nearby small towns and villages.

A more recent project called Passages explores public spaces, exteriors taken whilst passing by, again featuring their more geometric forms: enhanced graphic shapes and textural details, sometimes reduced to almost abstract shapes, revealing a beauty often unseen. During 2023 Stephen had two solo exhibitions in south-west France and was selected to participate in 3 art fairs: two in London and one in Rome. The eARTh Gallery in Hoxton, London will host a solo exhibition end of March 2024 featuring a selection from both the Vestiges and Passages Series. Further exhibitions are planned in south west France, Rome, Florence, and Vermont USA during the rest of 2024. All the fine art printing is done by Stephen Harper using a professional Canon inkjet printer. The fine art papers used are 100% cotton rag whose qualities highlight the subtle nature of the surface textures and delicate colours of these everyday street scenes. The fine art prints are for sale a s limited editions, signed, numbered, and issued with a certificate of authenticity. DISCOVER

Katrina Cobb, Epiphany - If you could peer into the vast landscape of your own mind at the precise instant a profound new thought ignited - What would you witness? The emergence of a fresh direction, the realization that you cannot revert to the person you were just a moment ago And do you even desire to? Picture it as such. ‘Epiphany’, a 80x80cm heavy body acrylic painting on gallery-wrapped canvas, with textured strokes created by a palette knife. Conceived by the self-taught artist Katrina Cobb, a former digital nomad who now resides in Mexico. At the age of 41, she delved into painting ‘mindscapes’ inspired by her journeys and introspective moments.

Veronica Chandler, Higher Perspective - Veronica Chandler is a US-based, Ecuadorian-born artist. A critical element of her creation process starts with her morning ritual, a time of mediation she sets aside each day, where her focus is to channel her mind and body into an optimal flow state. It is in this state where she creates her most inspired pieces of art. Veronica currently loves using metallic watercolors to highlight the beauty of birds, contrasting their rich color palette against a dark black paper background. Her favorite pieces POP off the page. With her art, she aims to evoke nature’s beauty and captivate the audience. It is her dream to connect with you through authentic art from her heart and soul.

Xiaorui Zhong, The Haughty Gaze of the Dragon - This painting, crafted for the Lunar Year of the Dragon 2024, marks my sixth year residing in the United States. Born in China, educated in art and aesthetics in the U.S., I draw from Asian heritage while delving into Western fantasy. This dragon with Western horns and eyes, yet Eastern fur and neck, my art goal is gracefully blending both cultures’ traits.

Alexandra Niculescu, Expectant Euphony - This artwork combines elements from various art movements, such as the Old Masters palette and Rococo landscapes, to create a thought-provoking narrative centered around a pregnant woman with thrombophilia. Inspired by the rich colors and techniques of renowned artists from the past, I sought to pay homage to women who were historically denied opportunities for self-expression through painting. The artist skillfully juxtaposes historical references with contemporary themes, highlighting the challenges faced by women in today’s society. Through vibrant colors and dynamic brushstrokes, this painting invites viewers to reflect on the complexities of life while celebrating resilience in the face of adversity. Alexandra Niculescu, Floral Reverie, a Maternal Odyssey - This artwork seamlessly blends elements from different art movements, including the wall master’s palette and a contemporary take on rococo aesthetics. Through abstract expressionism, the artist skillfully captures the essence of our modern times, infusing vibrant colors that represent humanity. The significance of blue in this painting cannot be overlooked as it symbolizes truth within its narrative. The powerful presence of this hue acts as a guiding force, leading viewers through an emotional journey and shedding light on profound aspects of life. With meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of color symbolism, this piece invites viewers to reflect on their own experiences.

Michele Morabito, Le città invisibili - This project originated from a journey I embarked on in the spring of 2013 to Istanbul. Captivated by the trees in Gezi Park, I sketched them fervently, reminiscent of the verse in a Pablo Neruda poem where these trees appeared adorned with human forms. Even upon my return to Italy, the trees lingered in my drawings. It came as a shock when, a few weeks later, protests erupted against the removal of 600 trees to make a way for a shopping complex that would replace Gezi Park. Puzzled by the connection between my trip, the trees I had sketched, and the unfolding protests that commenced with the Gezi Park occupation. After a decade of uncertainty, the painting was completed.

Lee sung geun, Looking at the same - The two individuals observe the same aspects of life over time. While the duration of their focus on one place is extensive, it prevents them from fully embracing the present moment. Each person has their own journey through time, living according to their unique individuality. The writer emphasizes the significance of our time over mere existence. This specific time is deemed more valuable than any other. Through the narrative, the author portrays two people engrossed in the observation of a single location.

Lee sung geun, Inside past, present and future - Existing simultaneously in the present moment, the past and future coalesce, shaping my perception. A slight shift in my actions allows me to connect with time itself. The three apples symbolize the continuum of past, present, and future within the artwork. Peering through the temporal divide, the protagonist embodies the past while gazing into the future. At the heart of the piece, grounded birds convey the artist’s current reality.

Lee sung geun, Smiling clown - What sets tears of joy apart from tears of sorrow? The artist skillfully depicts this contrast through the use of color: tears of happiness are portrayed in vibrant red hues, while a clown with a melancholic gaze hides a smiling face within a balloon. When the clown sheds blue tears, it is likely shedding tears of joy rather than sadness.

IVANA BUKOVAC, HIDDEN MEMORIES - The eyes are seen as the mirror of the soul: through a simple exchange of glances, an intimate dialogue can be established where the two interlocutors reveal all the aspects linked to memory that have contributed to form the current identity. Hiding the gaze through something means denying one’s essence both to ourselves and to others, thus effectively becoming invisible. Hidden Memories reflects on the theme of memories and the identities linked to them and denied by a black veil which, by rising to a dreamlike caesura that recalls the veil of Maya, has the dual function of guarding but also of denying what is hidden from the spectator to whom has the last word.

Leigh Witherell, April - This acrylic artwork measures 26”x26” and features a figure, a woman, who is depicted in profile, emphsizing the refined features of her face. The serene setting is conveyed through the soft light filtering through the trees and the contemplative pose of the woman. The painting utilizes impressionistic brushstrokes and a light palette to emphasize the idyllic and peaceful mood of the scene. The figure’s flowing gown represents a journey in grief and the transformative power of nature. The artwork was inspired by a grieving mother’s story about her son and his connection to magnolia seed pods, and how she now finds solace in sitting under the tree.

Quanaisha Stafford, See yourself - In this captivating series, we explore the hidden facets of ourselves as women. These are the sides we often keep concealed, unable to comfortably express in society, the sides we believe are deemed forbidden. Through my art, I create a mirror that beautifully reflects the love and beauty embodied by every remarkable woman I have encountered. In our quest to find our place in today’s society, we might at times feel isolated. My heartfelt intention is for these art pieces to reassure women that they are not alone, and as they gaze upon their own reflection, they will witness the tremendous growth they have achieved. The colors I carefully select are a tribute to the women who have touched my life.

Alexandru Crișan, Metropolis-Giants Of Steel - Alexandru Crișan (b. Bucharest, Romania 1978) is a visual artist interested in the existential complementarity of objective and nonobjective forms of expression. In the aftermath of incipient spiritualist art etudes, transcending a surrealist period of emancipation from the confines of geometry, not to mention a stint in the magical realism of overpainted photographic negatives, an obsessive chase for the “taming of the light within the organic pool of colors” ensued. While this pursuit found its default creative outlet within architecture, it also pushed him towards the logic of abstract expressionism. Cristiana Giacchetti, A-perception - Apperception is that state of mind in which reality manifests itself not for what it appears but for what it is in its spiritual essence. It is the condition explored by mystics when they descended into the dark valleys of the psyche and evoked their fears so that they became unshakable faith and no longer an obstacle to be feared. In this hallucinatory dimension restless figures advance that lead to wisdom and truth. As in Tibetan mysticism, the Dakinis, monstrous female divinities, wisdom representations ready to devour the beliefs and opinions that limit the existence of every human being.

Otto Frühwach, Sleeping Rider - This painting by Otto Frühwach in the style of modern expressionism is entitled Sleeping Rider. It is painted with acrylic paint on cardboard using the palette knife technique in a brisk style, as is the motif, the sleeping rider herself. FRUITS QUARTZ, Vedic nakshatra - ARTIST TALK first exhibited an art called “Who stole it?” at an exhibition in Times Square, but it became clear that the culprit behind that title was a Japanese citizen. It also turned out that Revati, my Lagna, was also stolen. Revati is a Vedic nakshatra. This fact is that the Japanese are really doing what is depicted in Michelangelo’s Judgment through spiritual manipulation. Japanese people not only judge whether to send me to heaven or hell, but also make judgments to take away the assets and profits of my life form. This is proof that the karma of judgment is being misused.

that he was going through the thorns

Xinyi Yang, I dreamed that he was going through the thorns - This artwork deeply reflects on human existence and fate. The grim face and distorted mask symbolize inner conflicts and external pressures. Inspired by Francis Bacon’s portraiture, Xin Yi’s portrayal blurs boundaries, revealing the complexity of humanity and aligning with the metaphor of thorns to imply life’s challenges. Xin Yi’s thorn symbols add depth, suggesting the relentlessness of fate. Thorns encircle the figure, forming an impassable barrier, expressing the individual’s lostness and struggle in society. This surreal piece merges reality to explore fate and self-awareness. The fusion of profound philosophical contemplation and artistic expression imbues the artwork with rich meaning. Ella Hollingsworth, City of Contemplation - Here, a chaotic cityscape unfolds, where ghostlike buildings, shadows, loom in the background... Yet, at the heart of the city, there’s a tumultuous cesspool of noise, light, and movement. It’s a metaphor for the human self: appearing calm and contained on the surface, yet internally, there are fireworks of emotion. This piece was led by its own narrative, as I let it flow freely, leaving undisturbed streams of paint. Yet the bold, erratic splashes, illustrate urban frenzy and noise, symbolising the inner turmoil within human self. As I journeyed through my own realms of grief and loss, I found that this painting became a means of translating my emotions into vibrant hues and expressive gestures. Aleah Zerance, A Mosaic of Everyone I’ve Known - This specific creation stems from a profound captivation with the transient nature of presence and memory. I have always cherished the notion of capturing a moment in time in an impressionistic way, keeping that instance close and alive within me. These sentiments are intertwined with my personal struggles with derealization, a condition that challenges my connection to reality and the spaces I exist in. The human bones were adorned with red ochre and surrounded by numerous ritual objects. This find raises questions about gender identity, shamanic practice, and the enigmatic connection between humans and animals, echoing the timeless themes in this modern-day representation of a Lazarus figure.

Raihan, Holy Musth - My artistic creations capture the essence of the ice age through the medium of collage, paying homage to our ancient artist predecessors. With de-extinction projects on the horizon, the revival of the woolly mammoth is anticipated to offer a saving grace in the face of the Anthropocene. Employing techniques of reverie, channeling, and the cut-up ideas of William Burroughs, I seek to summon the spirits, guides, and gods of the ice. Stylistically inspired by cave art, I strive to guide my digital petroglyphs into the present moment. Similar to the cave artists of the Pleistocene, I utilize movement, superimposed life forms, and hallucinogenic plants to inform and shape my work.

Okaasan, WARNING! Industry at work - I always used very different materials in my work: sand, stones, ashes… In my last serie “Out of the waste” I particularly enjoyed having no limits and recycle any piece of plastic, cans, nets or improbable objects like taps, craft supplies… Most of them collected among garbage. They give a new life to wastes: this is my way to spread a message about environmental protection, which became more and more important in my reflection. This creation is especially dedicated to industries that care little that their pursuit of profit destroys a precious environment.

Susan M. Bagrationoff, Blinding Gaze - This 30” x 24” original acrylic painting catches a cloud sylph travelling through the sky at sundown, allowing a sliver of the brilliant rays to peek through her eye. This piece was inspired by the intense and colorful sunsets during Fall in the Pacific Northwest. On a personal note, I had several experiences in one week where I was met by the blinding gaze of the setting sun through a parting of thick, billowy clouds. Hence, this faerie just had to be conjured onto a canvas. This beauty was crafted using copious amounts of modeling paste to texture to the piece. Palette knife techniques and Impressionistic brush strokes were utilized to apply the vibrant colors for a dramatic flair to recreate my experience.

His work deeply explores the dynamic relationship between humanity and nature, particularly highlighted in the latest series, “Seawall.” This collection raises critical questions: Will our creations like seawalls eventually fail, reducing us to mere historical footprints beside the sea, or will we discover a path to coexist in harmony with nature? Through his art, Van Ngoc aims to prompt a reflection on these existential dilemmas, urging viewers to consider our impact on the planet and the vital role we play in shaping a sustainable future for all.

Eric Paxton, One Year Old - The “One Year Old” panel is a dedication to the first birthday (earth-strong) of a little Crucian girl on the island of St. Croix. Watching her new eyes see the natural world with curiosity and wonder inspired me to look at the trees and leaves in a different way. How the few red orange leaves stood out in the sea of blue green. She held one and presented it as if to say, “look at this one”. She showed other people, and they also picked red leaves to show her. One man was 87 and had a leaf, and she seemed pleased. Everyone made a little dance with their leaves. She changed the world that day. Discover More - www.PaxtonVI.com / Instagram: @ericpaxtonstx / FB:EricPaxton

Christine Wenderoth, Ethereal Forest - This artwork highlights the interplay of light, color, and texture, born from a blend of instinctive recollection and creative vision. Crafted using encaustic paint and colored shellac on a birch panel, the process involves heating wax paint on a hotplate and layering it, with each stratum fused using a heat gun and left to set. The application of shellac on specific zones, followed by drying and burning with a blow torch, generates the distinctive textural elements on the piece’s surface.

Warren Dennis, Fun-4 - Limited edition print price: £100. The inspiration for this artwork began with the materials at my disposal - an airbrush gifted to me some time ago, but lacking a compressor. I purchased a compressor, allowing me to delve into the world of airbrushing. The idea took root as I used my hand, a technique reminiscent of my residency at the Watermans art center during a painting class. I vividly remember the challenge of engaging the children until we started hand painting, which instantly sparked their interest and joy, echoing the primal urge to create seen in early cave paintings. The piece, crafted in 2020 with willow fence on board and acrylic paint. The image captures a moment of creation, prompting reflection.

Tris.To.Quads, FA:Cycle n.01 - Tris.To.Quads, aka Matteo Cavaglià, presents the “Cycle” artistic series, where intricate geometric shapes emerge from extended lines in space. Initially modest, these compositions reveal rich detail upon closer inspection, drawing viewers into a world of intricacy. Using virtual machines, the artist crafts these shapes, supervising their creation and movement to achieve the desired result. In a new artistic exploration, the woven shapes cease to be the sole subject. Once generated, they become a drawing tool, defining boundaries of empty space. Here, the protagonist isn’t solely the line but also the clear space it envelops. Discover More - Instagram: @tris.to.quads.

Samantha Sadik, The oracle - Sadik stitch is an original technique. Born from boundless experiments, trials, and errors, a “no fear” approach to art and a persistent drive to Re- invent the wheel. I cut, hole-punched, burnt and pushed my art to its breaking point, in doing so I discovered that the multitude of repainted errors, layered over the years, had changed the fabrication of the canvas, giving it a structural integrity, strong enough to mold, shape and withstand pressure. Drawing on my Fashion and Textiles training, I skillfully stitch the canvas with cord, creating a corset-like sculpture that transforms a flat object into a dynamic 3D form, breaking free from its frame.

Nayeon Han, Leaving your trace on the outside world - I crafted this piece as a tribute to the baby I lost during a miscarriage. It served as a means for me to honour and rekindle the bond with my unborn child. This creative journey was a cathartic process through which I sought to dispel the grief clouding my heart and send my little one peaceful wishes in the afterlife. With each stitch, I envisioned the faint red line on the pregnancy test, symbolising hope and life, and symbolically revived it by infusing the piece with a vivid crimson hue.
