KIMBERLEY ART CENTRES | IN OCHRE Kimberley online Artitja Fine Art Gallery is delighted to be working with the Warmun Art Centre in Warmun; Waringarri Aboriginal Arts in Kununurra and the Kira Kiro Artists in Kalumburu in bringing their art to the City. Through curating this special collection, we encourage you to make enquiries, and seek more information.

The Warmun Art Centre is situated at Warmun, previously known as Turkey Creek in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, approximately 3000km northeast of Perth. Working with ochre, the natural clay earth pigment ranges in colour from yellow to deep orange or brown and can include red, pink, yellow, white and blue which is rare. Most ochre is found between the Kimberley in Western Australia and further east into the Northern Territory. The art centre is owned and governed by Gija people. The centre was established in 1998 by the late founding members of the contemporary painting movement in Warmun such as Rover Thomas, Queenie McKenzie, Madigan Thomas and Hector Jandany. These elders recognised and responded to the need for a community owned and controlled centre through which they could support, maintain and promote Gija art, language and culture. The centre has established a strong reputation for fine art internationally, and for its greater inroads into community support and development. Artitja Fine Art is delighted to have built an association with the Warmun Art Centre. Waringarri Aboriginal Arts is based in Kununurra, around 200km north of Warmun, in far north east Kimberley. The art centre was established in the late 1970’s, and is in the heart of Mirrawong country. The paintings of the art centre artists share the importance of their country and culture. The land of the Miriwoong people covers a large tract of country straddling the WA and NT border and includes the township of Kununurra in the East Kimberley, Lake Argyle, the Keep River and the Ord River irrigation area. (Information courtesy Waringarri Aboriginal Arts website) The Kira Kiro Art centre in Kalumburu, 550 km north west of Kununurra is on the northern coast of Western Australia. The art centre, largely administered by the Waringarri Aboriginal Art centre since it was established in 2009 has its distinctive style of painting which largely represents the Wandjina (the Rainmaker) and/or the ‘Kira Kiro’ (also known as Gwion Gwion or Bradshaw figures) found in the many rock paintings in the area. Located on the land of the Kwini people. Artitja Fine Art gallery was honoured to host the visits of Betty Bundamurra, Sylvia Djanghara from the art centre along with Dora Griffiths from Waringarri Aboriginal Arts in October 2019 for our IN OCHRE exhibition.
