Connecting the Dots We start writing the brochure well in advance of going to print, which means we wrote this in December 2019, a good time to reflect on the year that is fast drawing to a close and to think about opportunities that the new year might bring. Looking back on 2019 we delivered an extensive programme of workshops and performances across 6 sites, and we know from your feedback that our programme of activity is something you look forward to. These activities not only help improve physical and mental wellbeing, they also offer an opportunity to take part in something different, a chance to learn new skills. Equally importantly is that they help create opportunities to chat with people on the same ward as you. To deliver our programme we rely not just on the Artlink Hospital Arts Team but also a whole bunch of talented freelance artists and performers, and a big group of volunteers who keep the wheels turning. At the end of November, we held an evening event at the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh to say a very BIG thank you to every one of those volunteers. "I am a patient at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. At first I came to the Glasshouses with an escort but currently come along to the workshops on my own. The experience of coming along is very good for my mental health as I get to learn new trades. During the last half hour of the workshop we have tea and cake, sitting around the big table together, talking about what we have done during the week. For me this is the best part, as I like to know what is going on with everyone else."

Glasshouses volunteer for the past 2 years
Colour for the Corridor, Mackinnon House, REH
We look forward to strengthening our relationship with Angela Gray at the Health Foundation and continue our productive work with Becky Brazil, Royal Edinburgh Arts & Greenspace Manager. Becky has recently been working on the Colour for the Corridor project, as part of an ongoing and much needed face-lift of Mackinnon House. She and the hospital community have been working with Professor Fiona McLachlan & students from Edinburgh University School of Architecture on a trial arts project. The results can be seen in the Andrew Duncan Clinic Reception area and surrounding corridors, where the colour palette changes from the natural tones of Autumn to the first frost colours of Winter.

As it will be at least 3 years before the start of any re-provisioning work in MacKinnon House, the hope is to expand the project to include the painting of the Mack House main corridor, based on the colours of Spring and Summer. This will be a hospital-wide community project, to include colour workshops and painting sessions with patients, staff and interested parties. If you would like to know more about this project, or get involved, please contact becky.brazil@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk In 2019 we established new connections with wards at St John's and the Western General; indeed, we have a bumper calendar for the period January to March, with artists working on two new wards at St John's, two new wards at the Western General as well as the public photography project at the Royal Infirmary.

February and March will see artists Nick Evans and Trevor Cromie working on Ward 9 and Ward 21. Both these wards are new to us and have come about through working with Frances Aitken's Stress and De-stress Training for staff. After Frances delivers the training we then follow on, providing the creative input to build a productive environment where the patients' focus is on developing ideas and picking up new skills; staff are supported to gain confidence in delivering these activities in the future.

St John's Introduction (cont.) Ward 9 is a 30-bed mixed medical ward specialising in Cardiology along with other acute medical issues. The average patient stay is a couple of days; however, some patients might be on the ward for a couple of weeks. Ward 9 has a great pop up cafĂŠ right next to the ward and we will be delivering the 5 week making workshops there. Ward 21 is a 30-bed mixed acute medical ward specialising in respiratory conditions along with other acute medical issues. The average stay is a couple of days, but some patients stay longer. Normally we undertake communal activity as part of our workshops as we are very aware of their social benefits; however, on this ward we would only be getting in the way of the nursing staff and with that in mind, we will do more one-to-one, bed-to-bed work. When working with people it's always great to capture their stories and get a bit of conversation going about things that interest and excite them. We will capture these different stories to build a common narrative of the ward which allows us to work with many different people over the 5 week course of the workshop. Our idea is to translate these stories by creating motifs and graphics and then use these to create ceramics of some kind that can be used as part of the ward collection. A lot of us know the fable of the Willow Pattern plates, where the image and symbols on the plates tell the story of a young couple in love. Don't hold us to that though as things have a habit of changing over the length of a single workshop!

Five Week Making Workshops on Wards 9 and 21

We are now programming our regular performative artists in each hospital for a 3-month period; this helps them to get to know you better and to respond to you and your patients' requests and suggestions.
Artists Nick Evans and Trevor Cromie will be delivering a 5 week making workshop on Wards 9 and 21. These workshops build on the benefits of the training Frances Aitken has delivered, and will help staff understand the benefits of using arts activities in bringing people together to share ideas, as well as gaining confidence in delivering activities themselves.

Superstar Sarah is back on the Stroke Ward and Ward 17 at St. John's. Look out for her and her guitar and listen for that golden voice on your ward. Sarah and her sparkling personality will bring you songs from an eclectic mix of eras, especially pop and folk songs from times gone by. Together you will find songs that you know and love, and can sing together. Or, just sit back and enjoy an hour of entertainment in good company.

Singin' & Reminiscin' with Miss Annabel Sings: Memories are Made of This
With a passion for reminiscence and the help of a huge back catalogue of songs from every genre, Edinburgh's premier cabaret singer and host will be celebrating songs we know from cinema, television, the charts and the musicals. Annabel is pleased to be back to share her love of singing together and share some stories behind the songs and artists singing them. She will be returning to Ward 3 and Ward 1 IPCU to build on last year's sessions. If you love entertainment, movie trivia and chat then you will love this hour where you can sing, share stories, laugh, dance or listen.

I am Sculpture In February and March artists Nadia Rossi and Anne Elliot will be working on Wards 26 and 74. These are wards we have been introduced to by Frances Aitken's Stress and De-stress training. After Frances delivers the training we then follow on, providing the creative input to build a productive environment where the patients' focus is on developing ideas and picking up new skills; staff are supported to gain confidence in delivering these activities in the future. Ward 26 is a 29-bed General Medical ward with an average stay of 4 to 5 days. Patients come in at the acute stage of their illness and require various levels of support and treatment. Ward 74 is a 26-bed acute medical ward with an average stay of 30 days. Medical issues vary and patients often have a combination of cognitive impairment and mobility issues.

Western General I am Sculpture (cont.) We have not worked on these particular wards before and they have a different rhythm to their day. We normally undertake communal activity as part of the workshops as we are very aware of the social benefits of that kind of activity. However, in this new situation we may need to do more one-to-one, bed-to-bed work. On these wards we will introduce the activity carefully and slowly and regularly review the approach with the staff and artists as we progress. Nadia and Anne have decided to start by working with fabrics of different kinds to create exaggerated and fantastical creations. These creations can be worn by the patients and they will be influenced by the character of the people Nadia and Anne are working with. They may also be influenced by the routine and paraphernalia of the wards. We will make sure that these creations are documented and can become part of the workshop's legacy. However, 5 weeks is a long time in the life of the project so the workshops may take a different direction over their course.

Western General Events
We are now programming our regular performative artists in each hospital for a 3-month period; this helps them to get to know you better and to respond to you and your patients' requests and suggestions. The Hospital Arts programme at The Western General goes from strength to strength with the support of the brilliant staff at the Royal Victoria building and at Wards 50, 51 and 55. 2019 was a resounding success; getting patients up and out of bed for a change of scenery and a chance to chat with each other. Miss Annabel Sings and our visiting musicians have made a really positive impact. Louise, the Ward Clerk on Ward 51, thanked us for helping staff make new discoveries about a long-term patient, helping the nurses glean a deeper understanding of this individual through songs and reminiscence. Events continue to prove to be a fantastic way of bringing out the personalities and the interests of patients who may be shy, lonely or a bit overwhelmed when they are away from home. This new year we see the return of the beautiful Magdalena Durant to the RVB; Miss Annabel continues her musical reminiscence sessions, and over in the Anne Ferguson building the That’s Entertainment programme sees a new season with some new guest performers!

Events Magdalena Durant Magdalena is a classically trained singer and has been working with the Hospital Arts programme since 2016. She has a very gentle energy that relaxes and enlivens people who spend time with her. She will be visiting the wards at RVB regularly over the new quarter so expect songs from all over the world, from pop to classic sing-alongs to opera. People who have attended Magdalena's sessions always feedback that they feel like they've been out at the theatre experiencing something really special.

That’s Entertainment continues to give the wards a taste of the eclectic array of performers gracing the stages of the Edinburgh performance scene right now.

Royal Infirmary "Photo Me" Natalie Feather is a professional photographer who graduated in Fine Art Photography in 2009 from Glasgow School of Art. Her passions - apart from photography - are raising her daughter, music, climbing and gardening. Natalie has been asked to capture up to 10 portraits of patients, visitors, staff and environments at the Royal Infirmary.

The project will test a different dynamic in engaging with staff, patients and visitors, building new relationships, enhancing individual experience and affecting the hospital environment positively. We will invite relatives and visitors to the hospital; patients on the wards and outpatients, as well as hospital staff, to request Natalie to take a photo of themselves, a colleague/ colleagues, or a relative within their ward or work environment.

Royal Infirmary "Photo Me" (cont.) Natalie will then print the black and white photos and send them to the people who made the request so they can display them in their home, workplace, hospital office, ward etc. Natalie would then visit each of those locations to re-photograph the original image where they are displayed, and print the new photographs, giving a wider geographical and community context to the project. The project will take place in mid-February to March. Look out for Trevor who will be coming round the hospital to talk to people about the project before it starts or contact him on trevor@artlinkedinburgh.co.uk if you are interested in taking part and would like to find out more. Participants are required to sign consent forms for the photos to be taken and give consent for Natalie to take the second photograph, as well as permission for the work to be on public display. Natalie worked previously on Significant Spaces, where she collaborated with Becky Brazil and Royal Edinburgh Hospital patients and staff, enabling them to photograph "meaningful" places in the Hospital hoping to capture spaces before they were lost forever in the substantial re-building programme at the REH.

Over the years we've noticed that patients on the wards love a blether and a giggle. The hospital environment can be busy and the days long, so we hope our events help lift peoples' spirits.
Paul Novak After a super season last summer, we have invited back our favourite magician Paul Novak. Paul has been working on the Hospital Arts programme for almost 5 years now and he is brilliant at cheering people up, helping them forget for a little while that they are in hospital. Look out for Paul, his bow tie and mischievous smile as he brings some magic, chat and sparkle bed to bed.

One to one Art Sessions at the Glasshouses

Introduction In 2019 we completed a major project across all 11 wards in the new Royal Edinburgh Building as well as the Robert Fergusson Unit. It's no small feat to get all wards to agree to taking part in a project of this size - so the logistics were a challenge! - but the enthusiasm and creativity that patients brought to the work was inspiring. Every ward in the new hospital has a dividing wall between the communal dining area and the living room. It houses the TV and has shelves for books. Along the top of the dividing wall are cupboards with Perspex doors on both sides. Some wards used their own initiative and were using the spaces as display cases. Other wards were using them as storage, which meant they became a bit of a jumble.

When doing workshops on the wards we came to think of these spaces as "Vitrines," which is simply a museum term for a glass panelled cabinet or glass display case for art objects, curios or historical objects. To encourage all wards to look at these spaces as display cases we submitted a funding application to the REH Environment and Experience Group suggesting that we bring an artist in to work with wards on creating objects to go into the Vitrines. The proposal was successful, and we brought artist Tom Krasny in to do a series of workshops across all 12 participating wards. The workshop activities had lots of staff and patients joining in; some wards asked what was happening on other wards and you could feel a friendly but competitive spirit developing. Once all objects and props had been created, we went back to the wards to install the scenes in the Vitrines. The intention is that wards would adapt the scene on a seasonal basis. Some wards have taken to this with enthusiasm.

"We added to it for Hallowe'en and also for Christmas. It's easy to incorporate other objects into the scene to make it reflect a particular season or event that we want to celebrate on the ward." "I like the band of musicians and I love it when the lights come on, it brightens things up." "Very colourful, much better than having the cases empty." And my particular favourite quote by a member of staff about the synchronised swimming scene, "They are not very synchronised!" But we will let you make up your own mind about that! The project is now complete, and we hope we have created enough enthusiasm for wards to use the spaces as display cases, showcasing the creativity of people on the wards, rather than just using them for storage.

The Glasshouses are open to patients and staff who have an interest in skills-based activity working with wood, paint and plants as well as maintaining the much-loved Glasshouses. The group will be making artist's stretchers for the art group, upcycling furniture and general odd jobs such as laminating posters. Places are limited; please book in advance.

DIY Culture with Anne and Neil
Wednesday Open Art Studio with Anne On Wednesdays, The Glasshouses art studio is the place for ideas, imagination and artistic creativity. It is a meeting place where participants old and new gather to share ideas, knowledge and techniques. It is a great space to work on large scale art projects, and a space to paint without worrying about making a mess. During this period, we will be painting canvases for the Verandah Tearoom and the Mackinnon House corridors in a collaboration with Becky Brazil and Artlink.

Wednesday Open Art Studio with Anne Currently on show at the Verandah tearoom you can see examples of paintings and drawings in a new display. In the future Artlink will be changing the display at the Verandah every 3 months. The next exhibition on the theme of Edinburgh landmarks will be launched on Wednesday 25th March at 3pm. All are welcome. All materials and protective clothing are provided.
Gardening and Green Crafts with Anne Why not take up a new hobby in 2020, learn about gardening and grow your own vegetables at the Glasshouses? If you have never tried gardening before, Anne will introduce you to the joys of working with plants and nature, both inside the Glasshouses and outside in the grounds. If you already have gardening skills, come and share your knowledge with Anne and all the volunteer gardeners. The warmth in the greenhouses enables us to start sowing tomatoes, onions and sweet peas in January! We can start chitting our potatoes, prune the apple trees and plant summer bulbs during this time. The benefits of gardening activities, the camaraderie you establish with your fellow gardeners and the new skills you learn are really beneficial to both physical and mental wellbeing. The Glasshouses are at their most colourful in early March with an amazing spring display of daffodils outside and the flowering Bird of Paradise inside. Please come and enjoy even if it's just to sit outside having your lunch. We look forward to working with you in the Glasshouses.

Workshops One-to-one Art Sessions with Anne Anne is offering the opportunity to make art on a one-to-one basis. This is only open to a few people. These sessions can take place either at the Glasshouses or on the wards. This is an opportunity to work in a quiet space, on a larger scale artwork or a special project idea. The Supper Club Supperclub is the only place in Edinburgh where residents experience a night out (at home). Developed by Miss Annabel Sings and staff at Prospect Bank, the aim is to bring an exciting variety of musicians to new audiences. 2020 brings friends old and new to Supperclub with staff welcoming musicians into their cozy living room to entertain the residents. We are always looking for local community groups and individuals to come into Prospect Bank and volunteer so if you think you have a skillset that would enrich the residents' day or fancy helping out in the gardens than please do get in touch with Miss Annabel Sings.
Scott Heywood is ... Elvis! Back by popular demand, Scott returns to kick off the new season with rhinestones and hips a-swayin'. It's The King's birthday month so let's celebrate the incredible talent that was Elvis Presley with our favourite performer Scott Heywood.
Cera Impala With a voice like honey and some beautiful tunes, Cera is a new friend to Supperclub. She will be bringing her bluegrass, folk-tinged sounds to you to while away an hour.
Magdalena Durant Magdalena is a good friend of the Supperclub and she is back with her stunning voice to sing well known songs (from classical to pop) from all over the globe.

Siannie and Tara Siannie and Tara are a gorgeous clarsach (harp) and fiddle duo who will be bringing some bright and cheery music to keep the winter at bay.
Singin' & Reminiscin' with Miss Annabel Sings: Gotta Dance! The residents at Prospect Bank just love to dance and the staff are always smiling when they see everyone moving to music! Song is a magic tool to help people feel like themselves once more and dance and movement is such a great thing if you are inside a lot of the time. Miss Annabel invites you to join her for a song and a dance via a musical hour celebrating songs we know from the screen. Jazz hands at the ready as she invites you to join her to sing, share stories, laugh, dance or simply sit back and enjoy some good old-fashioned entertainment.

Liberton Hospital
Liberton Hospital Introduction We are working closely with staff at Liberton Hospital to make sure that patients enjoy positive stimulation and can look forward to a productive move to the Royal Edinburgh Hospital site in the near future. Initially we were going to start working with them once they had made the move to the REH but as the move was subject to further delay, we decided we needed to build a relationship with them before they made the move. There really is no business like show business and the audience at Liberton are a brilliant crowd. Staff, patients and visitors enjoyed a busy winter season and Siannie and Tara were a particularly special treat playing some lovely Scottish and traditional music on the clarsach (harp) and fiddle that got the whole room singing along. For the new year and BACK by popular demand, Scott Heywood will be returning to entertain with his very special impersonations ... not one but two gigs! That's right, not only will Elvis be in the building, but Dean Martin will be too!

Liberton Hospital Sarah Phizacklea This golden-voiced multi-instrumentalist will be sharing her favourite songs and what they mean to her. Sarah is well loved at Liberton so if you haven't seen her before now is your chance.
Wendy Weatherby Funny stories, cello delights and jazzy songs to sing together from the wonderful Wendy. She will have you singing and laughing along before you know it.
Scott Heywood is ... He's back! Scott made such an impact in July 2018 that we have invited him back - TWICE! Scott specializes in bringing back some of our favourite artists. His sessions are interactive, entertaining and always outstanding. Don't miss out!
