Artlink delivers arts workshops and events in hospitals across Edinburgh and the Lothians. We have a team of artists and performers who run workshops and events that vary from hospital to hospital, anything from singing performances on elderly care wards to sculpture and painting workshops on stroke wards.
Vanessa Lawrence workshop at St John's
We endeavour to talk to as many people in the hospitals as possible in order to ensure that what we provide is of relevance to staff, patients and their visitors. As you can imagine, hospitals are busy and often stressful places, which can make capturing the impact of our work on individuals and departments difficult. It's something that needs to be done very carefully and with a great deal of respect. As an arts organisation, we find that being as imaginative as possible in the way we encourage people to feedback ensures that the work continues to be both inventive, and also what people want it to be.
Š Albie Clark Hospital Arts Programme Team at the Glasshouses
So, in this programme we are going to reflect that listening process back to you as a sort of printed vox pop of some of your feedback. This will take the form of a series of short updates on our projects as well as 'snapshots' of what you say about the work, amassed from the many different ways you tell us what you think – through word of mouth, hand-written notes, cards and emails. There is so much to learn from having the opportunity to listen to your feedback and we want to continue to hear about the many different interests you have, as this allows us to be as imaginative as possible in the sorts of activities we provide and the ways we work with you. So, if you haven't worked with us before then please get in touch and for all the rest of you, thank you for taking part in our programmes and continuing to support our workshops and events.

St John's
The hospital community at St. John's is a bright and cheery one, full of people who love to sing and dance, especially to Scottish songs and jazz standards. We have spent time talking to people and listening to what they are interested in, and as a result the wards are in for some treats this summer! The marvellous Wendy Weatherby will be bringing her very special brand of music and storytelling as a new regular performer on the wards. For the first time Artlink are going to host a brand new one-off musical spectacular which will be open to a selection of wards at St. John's. Also in the last brochure we said we would let you see some of the artworks that were selected from the Vanessa Lawrence watercolor painting workshops with St John's Psychological Therapies Service. Vanessa worked with staff and patients in the department and together they created a series of beautiful watercolours, some of which will be hung on the walls of the department. The workshops were a great success and we have been inundated with positive emails, telephone calls and letters about how much people enjoyed them. Here are some of the comments we received. "This experience has been invaluable to us all; in the first instance, to get some meaningful artwork for our walls which at the moment are very bare and uninviting. This will have a huge benefit in brightening up our department for staff and patients and hopefully make it a more pleasant place to be." Laura Key, Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology

Introduction
St John's
"The Artlink workshops significantly improved our patients' experience for those who attended the group and the artwork produced will continue to improve the experience of those who visit our department in the future." Nicole Carter, Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology (CAAP) "Given the challenging emotions people will often combat as part of the therapy they do whilst attending the department, this will serve to make the area appear less clinical. It has also been really positive for both staff and service users to experience each other in a different situation within the setting whilst undertaking this work. Our experience of working with Artlink has been a very positive one, with gentle encouragement given whilst being patient with those of us undertaking learning a new skill, and it has been a pleasure to do this piece of joint work. Given the positive feedback and outcomes from this recent project we would be hopeful to have a similar opportunity again in future for a different group. Thank you Artlink team – it has been a privilege and a pleasure." Sharon McMenemy, Psychological Therapist

These new Making workshops are a direct result of conversations with Frances Aitken, Practice Improvement and Development, who has been delivering stress and de-stress training for healthcare staff across all 4 main hospitals. The intention is to follow up on Frances' training workshops with a series of making workshops to build on the benefits of the training and encourage ongoing activities on the wards. This will encourage staff to gain confidence in delivering activities as well as building an understanding of the benefits of using the arts to bring people together to share ideas and further learn from each other. We're currently arranging dates and times - as well as the artists involved - with Wards 9 and 21.

Western General
Western General Introduction Artists from Artlink have had a great time meeting old friends and making new ones at The Royal Victoria Building (RVB) wards and the Anne Ferguson Building on Wards 50, 51 and 55. We are excited about the summer months ahead as we have invited Toby Mottershead, one of Edinburgh's most well known musicians, to perform in the day rooms at RVB. We will brighten up the afternoons in the Anne Ferguson building Medicine for the Elderly wards with our programme celebrating the brilliant and eclectic Scottish entertainment scene. In addition, Miss Annabel Sings continues to get everyone singing and smiling in her sessions, so why not come along! We were pleasantly surprised by an email in which the singer Sarah Phizacklea talked about her experience as a performer and her work on the wards. She said, "I'm struggling to put into a few words all the incredible moments I've been privileged to be a part of thanks to working for Artlink. Staff and patients coming together to sing and dance, families reaching out to cry with one another, the stories that songs can bring out of a dementia patient, listening to a doctor or cleaner humming my last song as I leave! Every time I step into a hospital ward, day centre or activity room I never know what to expect and every time I come away feeling like I've been able to use my skills for something good." We know that the patients appreciate the distraction of the events on their wards. As we have mentioned before, it can be a long day on the ward if there is little to distract your attention, as illustrated by a recent comment by a patient at a Sarah Phizacklea event. After a particularly beautiful singing session a patient was seen to shut their eyes, lean back and mutter, "Such long days in here ... it's wonderful to have something so positive to break it up. When are you coming back?"

Introduction (cont.)
Roslyn and Sarah Phizacklea
On singing along to a Miss Annabel Sings performance, a patient on Ward 55 exclaimed, "You sang all the old songs, songs from when I was young. Thank you for taking me back in time. I really enjoyed it." When magician Paul Novak performed some close-up magic, involving equal measures of conversation and trickery, a patient told us, "Oh, someone to talk to and have some fun with! You've brightened a long day." Being in hospital can be a lonely experience for some people and what we try to do is bring some cheer onto the wards. We try many different approaches; some involve entertaining larger groups but for those people who are perhaps in their own room or are a bit shy, we will sit and talk and pass the time of day.

Toby Mottershead We're lucky to have brilliant and busy Toby Mottershead join our regular artist scheme. Toby is Edinburgh's premier Rhythm 'n' Blues man and if he's not performing at one of the jazz and blues festivals around Edinburgh and Scotland you may have heard him jamming at your local bar. It can often feel like being on the ward can make the days drag by, so we provide activities that take your attention away from your worries, even for a short period of time and perhaps help you to find your old self. It's vital for all our wellbeing, staff and patients alike! Talking of Toby, halfway through one of his performances at The Western a staff nurse on Ward 51 exclaimed, "I know you Toby! I saw you a few months ago at a local pub! He’s brilliant! You are going to love him!" Toby will be visiting the day-rooms of The Royal Victoria Building for amazing musicianship, song and chat that will make the time whizz by.

Royal Infirmary Introduction It is always brilliant working with the energetic activity coordinators Kim and Carey at the integrated Stroke Unit and Medicine of the Elderly wards. Our work together has created space for us to laugh and gain new experiences as well as learn. After all, working together encourages positive relationships with staff on wards, and ensures greater impact of our work on patients. There is a new activity coordinator Murray Fotheringham on Ward 120 and we are really looking forward to getting to know him, the staff and the patients on his ward. We plan to begin working with Murray to develop activity that provides positive entertainment for patients on his ward. Keep an eye out for the activities that are coming your way! Over on our usual wards, the magnificent magician Paul Novak will be bringing some chat and sparkle to your day. Keep your eyes peeled for his bow tie and the magical pack of cards that will disappear before your eyes!

Making Workshops (cont.) "Our stroke wards benefit from the varied workshops that are arranged through Artlink and the artists. Our patients have such a long day and having Artlink coming in cheering up their day is of the greatest value." So, our next questions are: what does it mean for the artist doing this work? What do they provide? How do they involve people? We asked artist Laura Aldridge to give us some feedback and here is what she told us; "I worked with patients on the Stroke and Dementia wards at the RIE. I wanted to work in a way that was accessible for all patients, taking something that could work in multiple ways and have tasks within it that were flexible to allow as much participation as possible. I decided to work with block printing; the activity allowed for much collaboration and conversation between staff, myself and patients. There was a freedom to it that allowed for testing out more abstract ideas alongside more realistic or recognisable motifs. Interestingly, the printing process seemed to bring about conversations about what patients 'used to do for a living' - there was one woman in particular that had been a printer. She had all this muscle memory and was able to just print non stop, making the most beautiful prints composed of other people's printing blocks. How she lined up the different printing blocks and chose complimentary colours was fantastic to see. It's crucial that people come away feeling positive and that the activity has enhanced their feelings about themselves rather than remind them of what they can't do." Laura Aldridge, Artist

Paul has entertained across all the hospitals we work in, putting on one-off gigs on wards and performing at events such as the annual fete at The Royal Edinburgh Hospital. Workshops Introduction Every ward in the new Royal Edinburgh Building has a dividing wall which splits in half the communal living and dining areas of the ward. In each of the dividing walls is a vitrine, a 2-sided glass space (think of a really large fish tank!) which is a design feature of each dividing wall. We have been working with staff and patients to create a series of dioramas in each of these vitrines, giving each ward its own permanent artwork. Each ward has had their first of three vitrine workshops with artist Tom Krasny. As the project progresses, each vitrine will hold sculptural objects made during workshops which tell their own, very personal story.

Introduction (cont.) It's been a great start with staff and patients creating some really expressive and creative sculptures. There are still months to go in terms of workshop activities and final install of the finished pieces but we can't wait to see the finished dioramas.
Š Trevor Cromie
We talked with Tom about her work at the REH and the impact she thinks her work is having on patients. She said; "Art workshops allow participants to shift focus from stressful circumstances to concentrate on something external and make creative decisions which are at the same time intuitive and subjective. In workshops making the work is often a collaborative effort - a dialogue between the artist or staff member and the patient. Engaging in creative activities together is fun and informal. It gives participants a sense of agency in a place that often makes them feel controlled. It also lets them personalise objects in an environment that can feel very impersonal. Art allows space for valuable interpersonal exchange. I am frequently surprised by their sense of humour and creative choices. The success of a collaborative artwork lies in the approach and atmosphere in which it is made, and I can personally say working with people on workshops has made me, as well as many other people, very happy." Introduction (cont.)
People get so much out of involvement in the arts. Working together in workshops encourages solidarity between patients that often follows their move from the hospital back out into the community. The safe space that the workshops present allows people to be themselves, to use their imagination and follow through on ideas away from a clinical environment. This is invaluable. And what do the patients at the REH think? "Pure enjoyment. Sometimes I am doing what I want and other times I want to help other people. It helps stop me becoming a revolving patient." Maggie "I have been doing art for nearly 10 years. I enjoy learning about art and doing art with other people." Giuseppe "Freedom of the mind ... solidarity with my fellow artists in the group." Introduction (cont.) Recently the DIY group at the REH have been working with our volunteer Neil Gaffen to upcycle unwanted furniture. We are always looking for new projects that often require skill, commitment and hard work to complete. With the participants who attend we've made picnic tables, benches, planters, banners, and are just finishing an elegant, contemporary dining table with charcoal top and orange legs. There are many more projects planned, some for the Glasshouses site and some that we hope to offer for sale at on-site events such as the summer fête, and perhaps more widely to customers in Edinburgh. Watch this space… © Anne Elliot
This sense of enjoyment and participation in worthwhile activity is echoed by the words of Neil: "I volunteer with Artlink because I love art, gardening and making things. Working at the Glasshouses makes a big difference in my life as it also seems to in the case of the participants. Its a treat to start out on a project that’s engaging for me, and watch as the participants take more and more ownership of the project, till ultimately we finish the process. It's coming up on three years since I first arrived here at the REH and I've loved being involved in projects. There have been and continue to be many enriching relationships with the participants, volunteers and Anne of course, which has helped me re-engage after a long period of disillusionment. Thank you to all at Artlink for the opportunity, and know that Wednesday and Thursday afternoons at the Glasshouses are in my diary for the foreseeable future."

And what do patients get out of this? A sense of belonging and the opportunity to follow through on ideas and develop new skills. In the words of a patient who volunteers on this project, "I have been volunteering at the Glasshouses for a while. I am mainly involved in woodworking projects. I helped to make a table which I am proud of. I have worked in construction most of my adult life and it is a great feeling being able to learn new skills. Anne and Neil are very friendly and encouraging. I love the feeling of achievement and having a purpose while working on the various projects. I am hoping the new skill I have learned will be helpful for me in the future when I return to full time work."

Artist Tom Krasny has spent the last few months working with patients and staff to develop ideas for a permanent artwork for the Robert Fergusson Unit (RFU). Tom recently presented ideas for the artwork back to the staff and patients at the RFU and we have been given the green light to proceed to the next stage. The next stage will be to work out the technical aspects of the sculpture, further developing the interactive elements of the artwork and tying down costs. Š Anne Elliot

Once we have done this we will put together another presentation to staff and patients on the ward in order to get feedback and input and hopefully another green light to move into production. Again we would like to thank the staff and patients on the ward for all their input so far and look forward to the next stage of this project.
The Vitrine Project All the wards in the new Royal Edinburgh Building have had their first vitrine workshop with Tom Krasny. Over the next few months each ward will have follow-up workshops. From this we expect to see some very interesting artworks develop. Days and times have been agreed with wards.

If you have never tried gardening before Anne and Chris will introduce you to the joys of working with plants and nature, both inside the Glasshouses and outside in the garden space. The benefits of gardening activities, the camaraderie you establish with your fellow gardeners and the new skills you learn are really beneficial to both physical and mental health. All the hard work of sewing and planting has largely been done and we are fast approaching the harvest stage where volunteers reap the benefits of all their hard work.

Prospect Bank Introduction
We've been going out of our way to invite in other organisations and offer Prospect Bank the support needed to ensure a successful project. It's all about community and collaboration, working together to ensure that the residents in Prospect Bank get access to interesting opportunities.
Š Miss Annabel Sings
It's been a fantastic Spring of eclectic entertainment, dance and song at Prospect Bank! Now, as we move into the warmer months we look forward to carrying on our collaborative work with staff at Prospect Bank to ensure the summer season is a hit!
Scott Heywood as Elvis!
We asked Sarudzai Mutebuka, Senior charge Nurse at Prospect Bank to give us some feedback on past work; "Our patients are benefiting a lot from the involvement of Artlink in our ward. The general atmosphere of the ward has changed and you can see that our patients are enjoying the different activities. The Supper Club has made the colder and darker evenings something to look forward to. The decorations and entertainment from the different musicians has been refreshing. I have seen our patients dancing with Elvis and other musicians. The singing group with Miss Annabel Sings has lifted a lot of our patients' spirits. She is very interactive with patients and her positivity is contagious. DanceBase also left a mark in the ward and we are hoping to continue with what we have been taught. Reading Friends are also helping with the one to one interacting time with patients. We are now looking forward to a dementia friendly garden all thanks to

Prospect Bank Introduction (cont.) Artlink and the Conservation Volunteers. PB has benefited from partnering with you and our patients have had more activities than any time before your involvement." In the coming months we will begin to take a step back from Prospect Bank, exploring with them how we can best maintain a programme of activity by tapping into local community resources. This will take time and we anticipate that we will continue to offer support and provide access to our network of community providers.
The Supper Club is a series of evening entertainment events developed by staff and Miss Annabel Sings to create the experience of a night out (at home) in sumptuous surroundings. Now we are back for our fourth season, which sees staff beginning to take over the organisation of the Supper Club; welcoming musicians into their cozy living room to entertain the residents. Supper Club invites the local community to Prospect Bank and so far a vibrant mix of musicians have entertained.

Volunteering
In just a few short months we've seen Reading Friends go from just a handful of volunteers on one ward to over a dozen dynamic and varied volunteers at five hospital sites; including Liberton Hospital, Western General, Ellen's Glen and even St. John's in Livingston. From full-time mums to retirees, yoga teachers to filmmakers, the volunteers have such great experiences to share with patients at wards in Edinburgh. Volunteers have read to over 100 patients so far. We have also gone on monthly trips to places such as The Scottish Poetry Library and The Living Memory Centre.

Reading Friends Volunteering
Dear Artlink, I visit elderly patients in the Western General Hospital and read aloud to them. So far, I've read poems, stories and life histories. Sometimes it good to illustrate what you have been reading to help people understand what is being read out so I’ve also shown patients pictures that illustrate the reading material. We always have a chat as well as reading and we might share memories that it prompts. Some patients who might have difficulty speaking respond in ways like smiling or laughing. I love stories and poems and I enjoy spending time with the patients. I like helping them feel better by reading to them and spending time with them. It's a very simple but powerful experience. The sessions let the patients talk to someone who has time to listen and it can be very therapeutic. If you are thinking about becoming a Reading Friend volunteer, I would warmly recommend it.
