Hospital Arts Programme October - December 2019
Connecting and Sharing
Š Anne Elliot
We really enjoy connecting with both staff and patients through our workshops and events programme across all the different sites we work in. Our ongoing conversation with you, the NHS Staff, ensures that our activities are relevant and create interesting opportunities. Of course, central to this work are the connections we make with patients - their feedback and ideas help inform what we do. We want patients to have a good experience and for you to enjoy what we do on your ward.
Feedback from Miss Annabel Sings' ward performance at St John's
It is important to us that we create shared moments. Sharing is important and can often heighten the pleasure of an activity, while if you experience something on your own it can highlight the isolation of that moment, amplifying a feeling of loneliness. So, let’s talk more and share more.
Š Albie Clark Hospital Arts Programme Team at the Glasshouses
We are very aware that our programme can never follow a one-size-fits-all approach. We often make small changes to activities as we go along to make sure they address interest and expectation. A conversational approach helps us to learn about individual interests and skills as the chat develops around the table. As a result, changes often take place within the timescale of a series of workshops. Whatever the outcome, we always use the learning from events and workshops to refine and improve what we do in the longer term. We are getting more direct requests from wards to work with them so it's clear that the brochure is working well in informing the wider hospital community about the things we do. Thank you for those requests; we will respond to them all. It may take a while before we are able to programme something on your ward - so please be patient! We also know that you really enjoy looking at the photographs of the activities we do. With that in mind we are trying to increase the number of images whilst decreasing the amount of text in the brochure. It's something we hope to get better at issue by issue. As always, we look forward to sharing many amazing moments with you over the next 3 months.

St John's
St John's Introduction We are collaborating with Frances Aitken, Practice Improvement and Development NHSL, to build on the stress and de-stress training for healthcare staff that she is delivering across all four main hospitals. With Frances we'll follow up her training input by organising five week making workshops on Ward 9 and Ward 21 at St John's. The aim of the workshops is to embed some of the themes and issues that have been developed through the training and build confidence in staff to encourage ongoing activities on the wards.
© Trevor Cromie
To kick off this collaboration, we organised a 'Pop-Up Sing Along Spectacular' with Miss Annabel Sings at the Ward 9 Pop Up Café at the beginning of September. By all accounts it was an afternoon to remember! We set up a temporary stage with bunting and rolled out the PA system so that Miss Annabel Sings could give it gusto and give it gusto she did. Miss Annabel’s stint at doing 'Our Cilla' by going around the room with a microphone and asking people who they were and where they came from was comedy gold. These more relaxed spaces and moments - where patients and relatives can have a cup of tea and a natter in a café environment - are really important as they help connect patients back to the world outside of the hospital. As Miss Annabel says,

Introduction (cont.)
"These moments of joy are so important within the cycle of hospital life; not only do they bring a smile to the faces of everyone attending, but they also lift people out of their situation. People move differently when listening to music, without even realising it. Social interactions and conversations take place which create bonds and make people feel good. It also gives them a shared topic to talk about in the coming weeks; all things that either help in their road to recovery or alleviates the repetitive nature of a hospital week." Frances added, "The biggest achievements start with the smallest changes. Artlink helped us give purpose to everyone's day and that was just by singing along to Annabel's performances. Help us help you to witness these smiles by joining in." The next Pop-Up Sing-a-long Spectacular will feature our golden-voiced multi-instrumentalist Sarah Phizacklea, so look out for her between 2.00pm and 3.00pm on the 9th of December.

St John's Workshops
Five Week Making Workshops on Ward 9 and 21 These workshops are a direct result of our collaboration with Frances Aitken. We will follow up on Frances's training workshops with a series of making workshops to build on the benefits of the training and encourage ongoing activities on the wards. The workshops will encourage staff to build an understanding of the benefits of using arts activities in bringing people together to share ideas and gain confidence in delivering activities themselves.
IPCU Bluesky Workshops An exciting new challenge for the Hospital Art Team at St. John's. Daniel Diog and the Occupational Therapy Team at the Intensive Psychiatric Care Unit approached Artlink with a view to working with us. There is a new outdoor courtyard next to the unit which is lacking in character and colour. Unsurprisingly, the bleak environment doesn't really inspire anyone to hang out in it. So, artist Anne Elliot, working in collaboration with the occupational therapists and patients, will explore what might be done to improve the space. Using pen, paper, paint and collage, patients and staff will be encouraged to create colourful abstract compositions to enhance the space. At this point we are not sure what the result will be, as we are at the start of a conversation. The project has lots of potential and we will be looking to open the process up to others who might be able to help achieve the vision that we arrive at over time. We will keep you informed as it progresses.

St John's Events We are now programming our regular artists in each hospital for a 3 month period. This helps them to get to know you better and to respond to you and your patients' requests and suggestions. We are also really pleased to be back on Ward 17 after its recent refurbishment.
Paul Novak: Magic Moments
Š Albie Clark
After a brilliant year of bed-to-bed work at the other hospitals, Paul is bringing his magic to the wards at St John's. We have invited our brilliant magician to Ward 17 and the Stroke Unit. While they are two very different wards, they do have something in common; a love of entertainment! Patients, staff and visitors always tell us they have a fantastic time. Check out when he will be on your ward in the calendar at the end of this section.
Pop Up Sing Along Spectacular with Sarah Phizacklea Following on from the very successful opening event in September by Miss Annabel Sings, Sarah will deliver an upbeat and interactive set of songs for patients, relatives and staff from Ward 8 and Ward 9.

Singin' & Reminiscin' with Miss Annabel Sings: Memories are Made of This
Moments where we share memories and stories are important to making connections with each other. This is no less important in a hospital environment, where you may be on a ward from 3 days to 3 months, or even longer. The everyday medical activity on a ward doesn't naturally lend itself to social moments, therefore it is important to create communal experiences by stepping outside that rhythm. Miss Annabel Sings will be returning to Ward 3 where they always enjoy a sing-song together and this quarter she will be bringing her brand of entertainment to IPCU Ward 1 for the first time. If you love entertainment and chat, then you will love this hour where you can sing along, share stories, laugh and dance. If you are not feeling that energetic just sit back and enjoy!

Western General
Western General Introduction At WGH we're developing further our collaboration with Frances Aitken, Practice Improvement and Development NHSL, and have created a series of creative workshops that follow on from the training that she is delivering. In discussion with Frances and ward staff we have chosen to work with Wards 26 and 74, both new wards to us. Since these are general medical wards, they have a different patient profile and operate on a different rhythm to the clinical day. Conscious of its social benefits, we normally undertake communal activity as part of the workshops. However, in this new situation we will need to do more one-to-one and bed-to-bed work, introducing the activity carefully, considerately and slowly; we'll perform regular reviews of the approach with the staff and artists as we progress. Of course, this will also take some additional thinking on our part. We look forward to these conversations and to what comes out of them, as they will shape and inform what we do with both wards. As ever we will update with some information and images once the workshops have been completed.

New 5 Week Making Workshops These new workshops are a direct result of conversations with Frances Aitken. The aim is to follow up on Frances's training workshops with a series of making workshops to encourage ongoing activities on the wards. This will encourage staff to gain confidence in delivering activities as well as gaining an understanding of the benefits of using the arts to bring people together to share ideas and further learn from each other. We will update you on our progress in the next brochure.

Š Miss Annabel Sings
Wendy is such a star, and it is with great pleasure we introduce her to the medicine of the elderly wards at the Western General. With her lovely voice, great sense of humour, beautiful cello playing, wonderful stories and seemingly never-ending knowledge of Scottish songs and jazz classics she will undoubtedly brighten your day. Make sure you catch one of her gigs on your ward. As a patient said at St John's after Wendy's visit last quarter: "I didn't expect this, what a wonderful surprise. Wendy unlocked memories I'd forgot. I will be smiling all day now."
Singin' & Reminiscin' with Miss Annabel Sings: Memories are Made of This Celebrating songs we know from the silver screen, television, the hit parade and the memories that we attach to them, Annabel believes 'time travel' already exists through the power of song; she is pleased to be back and invites you to join her to sing, share stories, laugh, dance or sit back for some time-travelling adventures!

All New! That's Entertainment Tis the season for variety! As the days get shorter and the weather chillier, there is no better way to while away an hour than with some good old-fashioned entertainment. Patients, staff and visitors alike have been enjoying a dazzling variety of entertainers on the ward and this quarter we have invited back some firm favourites and some new artists to Wards 51 and 55. That's Entertainment continues to give the wards a taste of the eclectic array of performers gracing the stages of the Edinburgh performance scene right now. Have a look at the calendar to see who will be visiting your ward to brighten up the day with some enlivening entertainment. We have had some golden moments, including a patient (who has reached the 100 year milestone) teaching one of the nurses to foxtrot during a session!

Focus on Fabric Workshop
© Anne Elliot
Royal Infirmary
Royal Infirmary Introduction
Fabric was used as a starting point for various reasons; it's a material we encounter every day and it's soft, tactile and clean to use in the hospital environment. What's more, it's great at evoking memories and generating conversations; it comes in so many colours and patterns and is a great medium to reflect the different personalities of the people who take part. Anne is an avid collector who has built up a large collection of traditional, vintage and contemporary fabric samples over a long period of time. Anne brought these to the workshops, along with vintage dresses, to spark conversation and act as a rich and creative resource. She also brought in paper copies of traditional fabric designs from the 1860s by William Morris as well as vintage designs such as the sputnik-inspired pieces from the late 50s.

Š Anne Elliot
Last quarter artist Anne Elliot collaborated with Activity Coordinators Carey Moss and Kim McGovern and patients of Wards 101, 104 and 201on Focus on Fabric, a five-week exploration of the wonderful world of textiles. At the very start of the workshop process participants decided that they wanted to work on a collaborative patchwork. This gave a flexibility of approach with people either working on their own square, or working together to create a square, the component parts ultimately building into a larger patchwork piece.
Royal Infirmary Introduction (cont.)
Š Anne Elliot (2)
Communal and shared activity of this kind is often a starting point for shared conversation. We had one lady who shared her memories of working in the woollen mills at Galashiels, lots of memories of sewing circles, evening classes and events at the Scottish Women's Rural Institute. And such were the skills of people taking part, there was lots of conversation about repurposing old clothes to make new outfits. Make Do and Mend and Waste Not Want Not were adages many of our participants were very familiar with, so much so that one of those sayings has been incorporated into the final design of one piece. Working in this way not only evokes enjoyable memories, it also engenders a sense of pride in the level of skill required to make something like this. Kim and Carey are really keen that the finished pieces should be displayed at the entrance to their wards, as they feel the work acts as a testament to the skills of the people who participated. The patchworks help humanise otherwise clinical environments by the sheer force of their handmade, human, creative touch and we hope they'll inspire new patients to the wards to take part in other creative activities. Who knows, perhaps in 100 years' time the design world will be using a Royal Infirmary-inspired pattern book as inspiration for their own designs!

Royal Infirmary
After a fantastic stint at the Western General, Toby Mottershead is hopping over to the Royal Infirmary to share his impressive musicianship with the wards. The patients' smiles, chat and the memories at the end of his sessions tell us that you really enjoy what he does. Days in hospital can be long, and anything that helps you feel like your old selves or reconnect with old hobbies and interests is a very welcome distraction. After a summer visit from Toby to Liberton Hospital, one patient couldn't stop thinking about him and his music for weeks after. She had an in-depth knowledge of music and relished the opportunity to meet people she could share that knowledge with. Toby will be visiting bed-to-bed as well as the dayrooms at The Royal Infirmary so keep an eye out for him.

Summer Fête 2019
© Anne Elliot
Royal Edinburgh
Royal Edinburgh Introduction A main event in the REH calendar is the Summer Fête which brings everyone in the hospital together. It is something looked forward to over many months and has a huge number of people contributing to it in many different ways. It comes as no surprise then that it is the main focus of activity for the Glasshouses art workshops and DIY groups in the months leading up to it. The Glasshouses become the hub for preparation from patients and staff developing the theme of the Fête to designing props and devising fun things to do on the day. So, let's jump in and see what was achieved this year! All the Pizza You CAN'T Eat Competition
24
© Anne Elliot
Artist Anne Elliot put out a poster call for wards to create non-edible pizzas. Anne also visited wards to do pizza workshops with them if they requested a visit. The Wednesday Arts Group were also busy creating their own unique recipes. In all on the day we had 20 entries across the wards displayed on a massive Italian flag made by the Wednesday group. And the winner was... Well we think it's pretty obvious from the photo; it was the pizza that would feed the entire hospital, so well done to Harlaw Ward for their superb creation.

Royal Edinburgh Bowled Over By Animals This year the Fête had a mini Petting Zoo and this inspired the Wednesday Art Group to create their favourite animals out of cardboard, animal print fabric and lots and lots of stuffing. The Zoo Farm Bowls game had Chin Chin the panda, Ike Pike the fish, Trigger the horse, Cato the cat, a zebra and a stag.

The characterful cornucopia of animals looked wonderful; we turned it into a zoo farm bowling game with lots of people attempting to bowl them over on the day.

Many of us remember the days when the grounds of the REH were filled with rabbits. There don't seem to be that many anymore. So, on the day of the Fête, the grass around the flagpole was populated with multi-coloured, fantastical rabbit creations made by many visitors to the Glasshouses workshops.

Some of the rabbits even made it onto mugs and badges which were on sale on the day. Anne and her group have been creating mugs for the Fête year on year, and people have now started collecting them, buying the limited edition mugs year after year.

Where Have All the Rabbits Gone? (cont.)
The Fête was Jam-Packed! Another firm favourite of the Fête is the plant sale and the sale of jams made by Anne. Using fruit grown and harvested in the Glasshouses, this year we had gooseberry, rhubarb, greengage, raspberry and blackcurrant. Anne made a particularly large batch this year which sold out; we might have to persuade her to make some more! It has been great working with the other third sector organisations, hospital staff, and all the volunteers to make it happen. Thanks also for all the creative and imaginative input from the wards and to estates for their practical backup. Enjoy the photos!

Tom recently presented ideas for the artwork back to the staff and patients at the RFU and we have been given the green light to proceed to the next stage. The next stage will be to work out the technical aspects of the sculpture, further developing the interactive elements of the artwork and tying down costs. This will take some time to do and we will update with images once the process is complete.

If you have never tried gardening before Anne will introduce you to the joys of working with plants and nature, both inside the Glasshouses and outside in the garden space. The benefits of gardening activities, the camaraderie you establish with your fellow gardeners and the new skills you learn are really beneficial to both physical and mental wellbeing. Prospect Bank
Prospect Bank Introduction Supper Club is now well established as a series of evening entertainment events developed by Prospect Bank staff and Miss Annabel Sings. Where possible we try to bring normal, everyday experiences into the hospital or specialist unit environment so that patients or residents continue to experience some of the things they enjoyed before they became residents. With Supper Club we want to create the experience of a night out at home, something a bit different to look forward to in the week, using performers whose repertoire might evoke memories and encourage conversation. And something where relatives can join in and enjoy an evening of entertainment with their loved ones. This is a chance for staff, families and patients to dress up and share a common experience. We know that we are inherently social creatures; well most of us anyway! It is also argued that sharing an experience can heighten the pleasure of that experience. So, the well-being effect of sharing an evening of song or music lasts well beyond the experience itself. We are now back for our second winter season, and Prospect Bank staff will be welcoming musicians into their cosy living room to entertain the residents. We are excited to invite back some firm favourites as well as new performers from the summer season. Gill, a brilliant PB member of staff who often supports Supper Club said she has seen some exceptional reactions from residents and highlights it as a very special and important time within the Prospect Bank week. All events take place in the living room and are supported by staff. We are always looking for local community groups and individuals to come into Prospect Bank and volunteer so if you think you have a skillset that would enrich the residents' day or fancy helping out in the gardens than please do get in touch with Miss Annabel Sings.

Liberton Hospital
Liberton Hospital Introduction The team at Liberton have had a fabulous time during their first season of performative events at the hospital. We've settled in very quickly and have been warmly welcomed by staff and patients. During a time of great change at the hospital (as they gradually move over to the Royal Edinburgh) Miss Annabel Sings has created an entertainment programme in the dining room of Ward 4, with an event happening every week.
Š Liberton Hospital staff
If it isn't Annabel popping in for a singsong it's another performer from our bank of performers bringing their unique brand of entertainment to this very special crowd. When we say crowd we mean it! We have had audiences of up to 30, with patients, staff and visitors creating a brilliant atmosphere. We are told that patients are often talking about the events for days after. On the right you'll see a photo of Babs with our fabulous Elvis impersonator Scott Heywood! In our first season at Liberton, a regular attendee to the events stepped up and showed us choreographed moves to music from the musical Oliver. She was swirling and twirling as we all joined in the singing. Afterwards she said that for a moment she forgot all about her own illness. Apparently, our brains have a limited ability to focus, which means we can't pay attention to everything at the one time, which means we must choose what to focus on. If we can provide events which not only lift your spirits but can provide positive distraction, it's a win-win for everyone.
