I am a supporter of and advocate for the arts. I’m sure that’s no big surprise. And I imagine, since you’re reading this publication, chances are you are an arts supporter, too. But, just what do we mean when we say, “the arts?” Do we mean visual art? Fine art? Performing arts? Painting, sculpture, ceramics, theatre, dance, classical music, opera, and literature? What about pop music, fi lm, and T.V.? Absolutely. These are all driven by the arts and by artists. Art is all around us, everywhere we look all day long. The sleek beautiful lines of the fancy phones we’re tethered to were designed by artists. The cars we drive, the logo on your athletic shoes, the characters of the video game you’re obsessed with, the pop or country or whatever music you listen to, the jingle advertising an amazing new detergent, the script to the T.V. series you binged all weekend … all created by people. By artists. Back in 2009, The Art Center’s curator at the time, Camille Silverman, presented an exhibition called “How They Made It,” featuring local architect Lancer Livermont, CMU theatrical scenic designer and scene painter David M Cox, and lead character designer for Blizzard Software, Paul Warzecha. Architect, theatrical stage painter, video game designer. Each one a talented artist and each one either living in Grand Junction, or having grown up and studied here. Three different industries, three different backgrounds, and all influenced and driven by a love for the arts, in one form or another. When you support the arts, you’re supporting more than the fine arts industry itself, you’re supporting almost all industries. By supporting the arts, you’re bolstering our economy. The Art Center of Western Colorado’s mission is dedicated to making life better for everyone on the Western Slope by promoting the arts. That mission takes on many forms. From exhibitions by artists with vastly different backgrounds and lifestyles to lectures, theatre, music and dance concerts, classes, and much more. Whether it’s through giving visitors insight into new worlds of art, inspiring someone to go into the arts, or actually helping to educate someone in one art form or another, The Art Center works hard to promote the arts in all its forms, in order to make life richer for everyone. We truly believe that art is for everyone. And we believe that the arts not only make lives fuller and more beautiful, but that the arts touch every person in ways they don’t even realize. The arts drive economic growth every single day, and most of us don’t even realize it. Arts organizations are suffering right now, just like many other industries. But arts organizations are often overlooked during difficult times, in favor of nonprofits that focus on human services. That’s understandable. But as the end of the year approaches, and you begin making plans for end-of-year giving, please remember that the arts, in all its forms, is, at its core, a human service. The Art Center can use your support, and we truly value your gifts, more than we can say.

Faces of C annabis Nichole Montanez October 2 – November 14 View reception details on The Art Center website Gaze into the eyes of youthful faces wanting to tell their stories in this exhibition brought to you by photographer Nichole Montanez. Montanez captures the casual expressions of children at play, careless and joyful, all the while living with lifealtering circumstances such as epilepsy, Dravet syndrome, and other debilitating conditions. The figures, some cast in deep chiaroscuro, record innocence of smiling faces, courageously navigating through tragic obstacles. In addition to their bravery, these children have something in common – they all have been impacted by growing advancements in the field of medical marijuana (CBD). This topic is close to

Montanez’s heart, as she is the aunt of a young girl with Dravet syndrome whose seizures have improved with the use of medical marijuana. Montanez started this project with the hope of enlightening individuals about the benefits of medical marijuana by sharing the photographs and stories of each child. Montanez states on her website, “My goal is to open eyes in an attempt to change hearts, minds, and possibly legislation.” The American Academy of Pediatrics only supports medical marijuana for children with "lifelimiting or severely debilitating conditions and for whom current therapies are inadequate."

Brush & Palette

Juror Ajay Gustafson Gallery sponsored by Dr. Michael Neste / Family Health West October 2 – November 14 View reception details on The Art Center website The 73rd annual Brush and Palette exhibition will feature artwork by amateur, emerging, and professional artists. The juror for this exhibition is Ajay Gustafson. Gustafson’s current body of work brings together patterned surfaces and delicately painted objects and figures. There is a fusion between the patterned background and translucent glazing techniques. She has a broad range of technical expertise with a variety of painting styles. Gustafson draws inspiration from her own family, the duality of femininity and masculinity, and the simplicity of still life forms. Gustafson utilizes a reduced color palette and brings objects

into the foreground with thicker applications of paint. Subtle translucent glazes help the objects to stand off the flat surface of textured backgrounds. The suggestion of threedimensionality is further achieved through precisely formed shadows cascading across the painting's focal point or implying a depth of space residing in the background. There is a juxtaposition with the flatness of the background and the dimensionality of forms in the foreground. This clash of classical and contemporary techniques brings together a broad range of artistic styles indicative of the kinds of artistic fusions used by artists working today.

Annual Holiday Art & Craft Fair Friday, November 20, 6-8:30pm Saturday & Sunday, November 21 & 22, 9am-4pm

We are currently making plans to hold our Annual Holiday Art & Craft Fair this year, but are proceeding with caution. As the date for the Art & Craft Fair approaches, we will work with Mesa County Public Health Department to make sure that the Fair is as safe as possible for both vendors and shoppers. Rest assured, the safety of you and our vendors will be our number one priority. As we get closer to the event, look for updates on our website. Every year, The Art Center holds its annual Holiday Art and Craft Fair on the weekend before Thanksgiving. There are gifts for all ages and all budgets. Nothing stays in a home longer than a handmade clay bowl, a handcrafted wooden wine stopper, or a hand-painted silk throw. They are unique and will be handed down for generations. This event is the second largest annual fundraiser for The Art Center and is great for artists, giftgivers, and gift-receivers alike. Everybody wins big for the holidays.
