SITE ANALYSIS The site is located at Avenida. do Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues, near the Macau Ferry Terminal. An existing car park low rise building takes up half of the site. It is surrounded by a hotel, a casino, a water res- ervoir, and a recreation park. It is in front of one of the main road axes in Macau city center and in route to the Amizade bridge. Most of the buildings in the area are commercial and leisure for both tourists and locals. The mountain Colina da Guia and its municipal park are in the vicinity, with some residential buildings and garden spaces. This input is in the genesis of the “Mountain” concept for the building. At the same time, this idea match one of the objectives in the Macau’s Master Plan directives in the preservation of the natural landscape through the creation of visual horizons and corridors. This was an inspiration for my design as well, connecting in a symbolic way the slope of Guia Hill with the lower part of the city, promoting the link between “city” and “mountain”.

SITE PHOTO Since half of the site has been taken up by the existing car park, and the motorcycles and trucks park outside the car park, it is difficult to enter or exit through the narrow pathway. To ease this problem, we can place all the parking inside the building.

CONCEPT DIAGRAM The concept is based on the maximum occupancy of the land plot, while creating on the ground level an open public space to the city. I was envisioning a mountain-like triangular shape as a reference to the neighboring Guia hill, one of the few natural elevations in the Macau peninsula. After experimenting with the shapes, different levels, and positions, the resulting image was similar to a mountain. The silhouette of the building became an abstraction of a mountain elevation. During the daytime, the facade will reflect the existing mountain in the vicinity. And with different pixel light sources, the mountain can be portrayed in the facade. The design for the openings in the building comes from a pixelization of an image of a mountain, in a sequence of steps to make the original photo of the mountain is less and less obvious. I wish the people to imagine a mountain contour, instead of seeing it printed on a façade. I wish people may feel its vertically and experience the tension of being on the bottom of that “mountain”.Inside the building, I have designed a maze with moveable and thinner walls that creates spaces for a museum, art gallery, studios, offices, auditorium, lounge areas, and meeting rooms for hosting local Macanese businesses and events. On the ground level, the place where the building meets the city, I wanted a public space only, as if the “mountain” was levitating. This way promotes the flow of people from Rodrigo Rodrigues Avenue to the inner part of NAPE area, by crossing the public square made possible by the two cantilevered volumes that constitute my building proposal.
