SITE PLAN

Av. do Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues

Scale - 1:5000

The site is located at Av. do Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues, near the Macau Ferry Terminal. The car park area takes up half of the site. The site is surrounded by a hotel, a casino, a water reservoir, and a recreation park. It is in front of the main road and in route to the Amizade bridge. Most of the buildings in the area are commercial and leisure for both tourists and locals. The mountain Colina da Guia and its municipal park are in the vicinity, with some residential buildings and garden spaces.

INFRONT OF THE EXISTING CAR PARK

Since half of the site has been taken up by the existing car park, and the motorcycles and trucks park outside the car park, it is difficult to enter or exit through the narrow pathway. To ease this problem, we can place all the parking inside the building.

CONCEPT DIAGRAM SEQUENCE OF “MOUNTAIN” CONTOURS

SEQUENCE OF TYPOGRAHIES

The concept is based on the block base of the existing building, envisioning a triangular shape. After experimenting with the shapes, different levels, and positions, the resulting image was similar to a mountain. During the daytime, the facade will reflect the existing mountain in the vicinity. And with different pixel shaped light sources, the mountain can be portrayed in the facade. Inside the building, I have designed a maze with moveable and thinner walls that creates spaces for a museum, art gallery, studios, offices, auditorium, lounge areas, and meeting rooms for youths to work in.

TRADITIONAL CRAFTS INTO BAMBOO PAVILLION

This is a group project led and organised by prof. Filipe Alfonso, who also led students in a field trip to Nansha-Guangzhou, China to build this project with bamboo. This project is inspired by the traditional crafts of bamboo lanterns from Macau’s Mid-Autumn Festival. Our pavilion is a space generated by two ellipses displaced three-dimensionally and rotated in relation to each other. The main goal is to create an architectural space inside the centre of the ground level inner ellipse, and a “corridor” like space that can be accessed to experience the tension of the space and curvature given by the repetition of the bamboo poles. WAVE CAFE PAVILION

SITE PLAN

Av. de Sarges

Scale - 1:5000

The site is located at Av. de Sagres, in front of One Central, facing Nam Van Lake. The area is very exposed during the sunny days and people have a hard time walking and resting in this area. It is also a big open space that most tourists transit throughout the day.

MASTER PLAN

As seen in the master plan, the wave structure is attached to the top of the pavilion and the two rectangular structures with beams. Between the two rectangular areas, the middle is a big open space that provides shade and allows people to walk leisurely. The rooftop is also accessible for leisure and sightseeing of the lake. The edges of the wave, in other words the roof, is anchored to the foundation by steel plates and french hand.

For the Heritage Project, I have learned about traditional architecture and how to keep and restore the original structure of the building. According to the existing building of the Jao Tsung I-Academy, there was a family room indoors that was perfectly symmetrical. I would describe the symmetry of both interior and exterior of the building as if seen through a mirror.

Instead of sectioning the building into many rooms, we can open up the spaces, and create a welcoming and connected vibe allowing for people to gather. The concept is around the perfect circle, also known as Yuen Yuen in Chinese. The circle symbolizes “fulfillment, oneness, perfection, and unity.” It shows the value of some cycle, or person, coming full circle. During gatherings, and celebrations, families will gather around a circular table. The center pillar in this design means to represent this perfect circle.

FLOOR PLANS

SECTION

On the ground floor, the entrance leads to a coffee shop with a small bookstore in its center. The center pillar consists of well crafted floor-to-ceiling bookshelves shaped as a circular column. There are 4 stairways that lead to the 1st floor. 2 stairways are beside the entrance to the coffee shop, and another 2 are near the museum in the back. A glass roof covers the open area between the coffee shop and the museum, letting natural light in. The bathrooms are located beside the small museum.

ELEVATION

On the first floor, the coffee shop has space for a small terrace for people who want to sit in the open air. The bookshelves in this floor are aligned to the ones on the ground floor, making an illusion of a huge column going through both floors. The back area on the first floor is designed for a well equipped kitchen, with an elevator solely for employees. Separated by the glass roof, a bridge connects the kitchen to the first floor coffee shop. Since it is a heritage building, I want to maintain the historic facade of the building and keep most of the original wooden shutters, decorative entrance arches, doric columns, balusters, and other historic elements original to the building. By being open to the public, locals and tourists can see it as a historical building, with a small museum inside, yet also a part of modern society where they can cozily enjoy a coffee and a book.

COALESCENT VILLAGE

SITE PLAN

Av. de. Sarges

Scale - 1:5000

It refers to the study and the form of a set of buildings which had similarities in their types of function and form. Formal building typology is based on the design, format or relationships of buildings to streets. Buildings are distinguished based on their basic form, site configuration and scale. The site is in Rua do Almirante Sérgio, surrounded by the residential and commercial buildings which are nearby, as well as churches and public facilities. The location is very local, but also has tourists transiting to nearby areas. The site having an atypical and ordinary space, the building idea is going to be formed through stacked modular arrangements. This sequential collection marks each building with a diverse set of functions, picturing uniquely abstract environments in which to live and work. The stacked design allows for a wide variety of shapes by shifting, rotating, and manipulating the floor plans. The interior is going to have a design that allows new points of intersection for human interactions.

SEQUENCE OF MODULAR STARCKING

Instead of the standard typology of Macau such as isolated, symmetrical, and towering vertical apartments, this coalescent design breaks away from this stereotype and explores a radically interconnected network of living and communal spaces. There are commercial areas, reception, and the main lobby on the ground floor. The 1st and 2nd floors are connected by the lobby, interconnecting the upper levels. The block is keeping the same rotation arrangement to the form of six blocks and four blocks from the GF to the upper level, having a large-scale open and courtyards. Integrated with the natural environment, the interlocking blocks form a village filled with cascading sky gardens and rooftop terraces.

The concept of the building is based on the shape of a diamond. The function of the building is a dynamic urban oasis. It is a place designed for artists and creators, with workshop spaces, galleries, and exhibition halls open for the public. The building’s shape gives a different perspective at every angle that you look at. It has many sides, and some are windows facing different directions like north-east and south-west. Overall design is circular with sharp edges similar to a diamond. The style is futuristic, and sharp. Standing out in the quiet and open lakeside, passerby locals and tourists can visit this dynamic building and comfortably enjoy the work of various local and international artists and craftsman. A building shaped like a diamond reflects my architectural beliefs, after many years of research on architecture construction technology, as well as the human and social aspects of architecture. “Architecture that is part of nature” is a concept that I have come to believe in as I polish my knowledge and skills. Creating buildings that adjust to life, to our needs, to our moods.
