Eugenia Smolyakova

Eugenia is a Russian artist based in Yekaterinburg. Her work is strongly influenced by the white scenery that occurs due to the snow, during the heavy winter in Russia. Eugenia’s research focuses on issues that concern the environment. She is using plants in her work as they represent life. She is metaphorically presenting the seeds on the leaves as a metaphor to describe cities, and she combines the soulless metal with the organic plants to emphasise on the contrast between them.

Falling City, November 2017, goes back to work I made previously of upside down cities. The image is part of my general attempt to look at the rise of Medievalism in contemporary art and the new place faith has in society. I started making scratched line paintings in 2017, they were a new change in the way I made lines. My recent solo shows include Lines 20:21 Visual Arts Centre Scunthorpe 2018, Discovering the Paintings of Jane Walker Surface Gallery Nottingham 2017. Selected group exhibitions include: Project Peace Galerie Kerstan Stuttgart & travelling to Elizabethtown Pennsylvannia 2017, Layers artists in residence WorldofCo, Sophia Bulgaria 2017, Dreams and Extremes, America Lichfield Art Prize finalist, Lichfield Cathedral 2017, Legend Moma Machynlleth, 2017.

The work is inspired by the Water element has a metaphor of concepts such as memory, time, change and vulnerability in the face of life events. It focuses on transmitting visually an exploration of ideas regarding life expectations, personal choices and the relationship between our ideals and what we truly accomplish.
