about art of time ensemble

Renowned concert pianist Andrew Burashko formed Art of Time Ensemble in 1998 by inviting a group of like-minded musicians and prominent figures in dance, theatre and other art forms to perform one-off concerts in Toronto. The company has gone on to become a leader in Toronto’s vibrant performing arts scene, through its subscription season at the Harbourfront Centre Theatre, regular appearances at Koerner Hall, album releases, performances with leading Canadian orchestras, and the tours of its unique offerings to dozens of cities throughout Canada and the United States. Exploring the relationship between classical music in its many forms and other genres such as jazz, pop, electronica, rock, folk, electroacoustic, gospel and others, Art of Time seeks to reveal the qualities that lie at the heart of all great music.

Peggy Baker is one of Canada’s most celebrated and influential dance artists, respected as a performer in the work of esteemed Canadian and American creators; as an educator in important dance programs throughout North America; and as a choreographer of poetic and visually striking works for her Toronto based company, Peggy Baker Dance Projects. Artist-in-Residence at Canada’s National Ballet School, Ms. Baker’s many honours include the Order of Canada, the Governor General’s Award, the Premier’s Award, the Carsen Prize, Honorary Doctorates from York and the University of Calgary, a 2017 Bogliasco Foundation fellowship, and six Doras.

James Kudelka, Director and Choreographer, is widely acknowledged as one of North America’s most innovative choreographers. His mastery of both classical ballet and modern/contemporary dance has earned him commissions from companies as stylistically diverse as American Ballet Theatre, Chicago’s Hubbard Street Dance and Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal. Kudelka’s work covers an impressive range, from virtuoso pas de deux through large-scale, and always arresting adaptations of such classics as Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and Cinderella, to boldly innovative creative collaborations with dancers, designers and musicians. After nine distinguished years as Artistic Director of the National Ballet of Canada (1996– 2005), James Kudelka continues to undertake collaborative projects that engage and challenge him as a choreographer.

david earle David Earle is a Canadian trailblazer, a master choreographer and teacher, and a cultural icon. His dancers are some of the most physically eloquent, powerful, and individual artists in Canada. He is dedicated to the beauty and musicality of dance, making him stand out in a medium that often rejects both. Indeed, his sense for the unity of music and dance is legendary, and his works for large groups, set to such compositions as Mozart’s Requiem and the Brahms’ 1st Symphony, still astonish at every performance. David’s openness to experiment, and his willingness to challenge superficiality and cynicism mean that his work speaks forcefully to contemporary audiences. He is truly unique in his ability to reach and to move spectators of every background, whatever their familiarity with dance and its traditions. The work of David Earle has a long history and continues to evolve, remaining true to its roots as well as responsive to the world around us. Under Burashko’s direction, Art of Time Ensemble has become a Canadian destination for today’s most accomplished artists working in music, dance, theatre, film and literature.
