Daniel Brooks has been a leading innovator in the Canadian theatre for over thirty years. As a director, writer, producer, actor and teacher, he has collaborated with and mentored some of the countries finest artists, and continues to explore the boundaries of theatre with recent productions like Chris Morris’s The Runner and his own play The Full Light of Day. His many awards include the Siminovitch Prize. His work has toured across Canada and around the world.
Robin Dann is a songwriter and singer who works collaboratively with a close community of musicians in Toronto. Recently, she has been focused on touring with her band Bernice both in North America and internationally. Bernice has put two records out with Canadian label Arts & Crafts. Robin also sings with many other people including Alanna Stuart, Bahamas, and Ben Gunning. Earlier this winter, Robin and Bernice created a live score for the Toronto Dance Theatre’s Persefone Songs which they performed every night, on stage with the dancers. Upcoming engagements include the Halifax and Vancouver Jazz festivals, and a headlining show at Lee’s Palace on June 7th.
andrew bur ashko Andrew Burashko is the founder and creative force behind Art of Time Ensemble. Born in Moscow, Burashko trained as a concert pianist across North America, making his solo debut with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at the age of 17. As a soloist, Burashko performed with some of the world’s most renowned conductors, including Marin Alsop, Sir Andrew Davis, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, and Pinchas Zukerman. His eclectic musical interests have led him more recently to share the stage with such diverse artists as Branford Marsalis, Brent Carver, and Madeleine Peyroux. In 1998, Burashko formed the Art of Time Ensemble to create unique concerts that ignore the barriers between genres and disciplines, with the aim of exposing audiences to a broad range of artistic possibilities. Under Burashko’s direction, Art of Time Ensemble has become a Canadian destination for today’s most accomplished artists working in music, dance, theatre, film and literature. In addition to their annual concert series in Toronto, Art of Time Ensemble has toured extensively throughout Canada and the United States, as well as in Russia and Finland.
davide direnzo Davide DiRenzo is an alumnus of the University of Toronto’s Jazz Studies program. He was the house drummer for the hugely successful Canadian Idol television talent competition, and has worked with many of the country’s top performers and recording artists including Jacksoul, Holly Cole, Ashley McIsaac, Melissa Stylianou, Dione Taylor, Heather Bambrick, Eliana Cuevas, Richard Underhill, Bill King’s Saturday Night Fish Fry, Sarah Slean, Carol Welsman, and Alanis Morisette, to list a few. Davide DiRenzo was a member of the Peter Smith Quartet when they were featured during the Sound of Toronto Jazz Concert Series at the Ontario Science Centre.

Kevin Hearn is best known as a multiinstrumentalist from Barenaked Ladies, the multi-platinum selling band he’s played with for over two decades. One of the most respected Toronto musicians of the past 25 years, Hearn’s solo albums always attract equally brilliant collaborators such as singer/songwriters Ron Sexsmith and producer Gavin Brown (Metric, Tragically Hip, Sarah Harmer), not to mention his 22-year-relationship with the rhythm section of Chris Gartner and Great Bob Scott.
Drew Jurecka is a crossover jazz and classical violinist. Drew has played and recorded with a broad spectrum of artists in many genres, from Dave Brubeck to Ron Sexsmith. For five years Drew played with Jeff Healey as part of his Jazz Wizards band. Drew can be heard on three of Jeff Healey’s CDs, and movie and radio soundtracks including Franklin, Republic of Doyle, Make the Politician Work, Gunless, Degrassi, and Little Mosque on the Prairie.
george koller One of Hearn’s closest relationships, both musical and personal, was with the late, great Lou Reed, for whom Hearn acted as keyboardist and musical director from 2007 up until his passing in 2013.
john johnson Juno Award winner John Johnson is proficient on all the saxophones from sopranino through baritone, as well as piccolo, flute, alto flute, clarinet, and bass clarinet. John can often be seen playing with Soul Stew, The Montuno Police, The Barlow Group, Vector, The Boss Brass, and Manteca. He has performed with Molly Johnson, Holly Cole, Diane Krall, Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, Dionne Warwick, Bill Mays, the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, and has appeared as a guest artist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra on numerous occasions.
Bassist, composer and producer George Koller has accumulated hundreds of wildly diverse performing and recording credits in his expansive musical career. A prolific composer and producer, yet recognized primarily as a bass player, George plays a variety of instruments, notably Indian stringed Instruments. He has performed professionally and extensively within most genres, best known for his work in jazz, free jazz, folk, world and world fusion. For over three decades, he has performed and/or produced over 600 CDs. In the last decade, he has produced music for Yoga and Indian Classical music artists. George was presented with the 2007 National Jazz Award for “Bassist of the Year”.
amy l aing Amy plays regularly with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and has played with the Canadian Opera Company, the Windsor Symphony, Niagara Symphony, Thunder Bay Symphony, and also held a position with Symphony Nova Scotia in Halifax. Amy is an active chamber musician, and was a member of the Madawaska String Quartet. She has performed or recorded with leading Canadian artists including Jesse Cook, The Barenaked Ladies, Jim Cuddy, Steven Page, Sarah Slean, Molly Johnson, Jim Guthrie, Amy Sky, and many more.

Dorothea Paas is a singer and songwriter from Toronto who makes spacious, contemplative guitar music to set your thoughts and feelings to. In addition to performing her own songs, she sometimes gets to sing back-up vocals for some of her favourite bands around the city, such as Jennifer Castle and U.S. Girls. Having released several of EPs and completed a cross-country tour, she is now recording her first full-length to be released later this year.
Born in Brooklyn, raised in Switzerland and a long-time Canadian who calls Toronto home, Shakura S’Aida has been involved in the national music scene for nearly 25 years. After stints as a vocalist in Mystique (alongside Deborah Cox) and world-music band Kaleefah, S’Aida broke out as a solo artist whose blend of soul, rock and blues has cultivated a deep connection with audiences around the world. Shakura’s most recent album, Time, was released globally in 2012 on ElectroFi records, and earned her a Juno Nomination for Best Blues Album of the Year (2013).
dougl as perry Violist Douglas Perry has held senior artistic positions in many Ontario organizations, including Artistic Administrator for the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and Artistic Director of Arraymusic. He was a founding member of Tafelmusik, and performed with them for over a decade. He has been Principal Viola of the Santa Fe Opera, the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony and the Canadian Opera Company and has numerous recordings on various labels, including J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #6 with the CBC Vancouver Orchestra.
rob piltch Rob Piltch has worked with The Bernie Piltch Quartet, The Ted Moses Quintet and Blood, Sweat & Tears. He has worked as a session player with Kim Mitchell, Shirley Eikhardt, Guido Basso, and Rob McConnell, and has recorded two albums: Bells and Rob Piltch. Rob has also performed and recorded with Colm Wilkinson, Molly Johnson, Emilie-Claire Barlow, Louise Pitre, Steven Page, Sarah Slean, Sophie Milman, and The Art of Time Ensemble. His CD Chambers is available on iTunes and on CD Baby.
stephen sitarski Stephen Sitarski is Concertmaster of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and held the same position with the Esprit Orchestra and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony (KWS). Sitarski became Artistic Director of the KWS Baroque and Beyond. Stephen is a founding member of Trio Laurier, and is a regular participant in chamber groups and festival events nationally and internationally. Stephen is also on the faculty of Wilfrid Laurier University, Toronto’s Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music.

Signed to Atlantic/Warner Records at the tender age of 19, three-time Juno nominee and modern-day Renaissance woman Sarah Slean has since released 11 albums in over 10 countries worldwide. Over her 20-year career, Slean has published two volumes of poetry, starred in short films and a movie musical (spawning two Gemini Award nominations), penned two string quartets and a piano quartet, held numerous exhibitions of her paintings, and shared the stage with 10 of the country’s professional orchestras – often with her own orchestral scores. In addition to headlining theatres across Canada, Sarah has also toured Europe, the US and Scandinavia and has opened internationally for such artists as Bryan Ferry, Rufus Wainwright, Alanis Morissette, Andrew Bird, Feist, Ron Sexsmith, Chris Isaak, and Buck 65. Metaphysics, her first recording in 5 years, is described as a breathtaking amalgamation of Slean’s dramatic orchestral arranging and her signature take on songwriting. In 2019, she will be moving into yet more new worlds - Slean will compose the music for a stage musical version of the film Maudie, and has been expanding into film scoring as a recent Canadian Film Centre composer-in-residence.
Felicity Williams is a musician based in Toronto, Canada. She is a member of Juno award winning Bahamas, Bernice (Robin Dann), and Hobson’s Choice. Touring regularly throughout North America, Europe, and Australia, she is an active member of Toronto’s creative music community, contributing voice to the performance and recording projects of others, including Alex Lukashevsky, Thomas Gill, the Weather Station, John Southworth, and Jennifer Castle. Her writing is featured in the Al Purdy Project, a musical vehicle for the poems of the Canadian poet laureate. This ensemble was filmed by Nicholas de Pencier in the house Purdy built in Ameliasburg, ON for Brian D. Johnson’s documentary Al Purdy Was Here (2015).
kevin turcot te Kevin Turcotte has been regarded as one of Canada’s most proficient performers for nearly two decades. He studied music at the prestigious Banff School of Fine Arts and later, at the University of Toronto, where he joined the faculty in the 1990s. He has performed on over 75 recordings and in countless club and concert appearances. He has toured extensively throughout North America and internationally with the Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra and Time Warp, with Don Byron.
tom wil son Tom Wilson came to prominence in the ‘90s as the leader of the much-loved Junkhouse, and later found a whole new audience with roots-rock super-group Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, who have enjoyed recent success with their album KINGS and QUEENS, a collaboration with some of the finest female artists in the field of Americana and Roots Music. Wilson released solo albums in 2001 and 2006, and his 2005 collaboration with Bob Lanois, The Shack Recordings, was critically acclaimed. As the vocalist and guitarist for LeE HARVeY OsMOND, he released A Quiet Evil, The Folk Singer and Beautiful Scars.

Bryden Baird is a trumpet player, composer, and arranger, and has acted as Musical Director for Steven Page (formerly of the Barenaked Ladies) and Feist. When not on the road, Baird maintains an active studio career in Toronto. Some recent projects he’s composed for include the film Gunless (with Greg Keelor of Blue Rodeo), Chantal Kreviazuk’s symphony tour and the Art of Time Ensemble.
Robert Carli leads a diverse career as a performer and composer for film and television. He performs as saxophonist regularly with several ensembles, including the Toronto Symphony and the National Ballet of Canada Orchestra. His music has received numerous awards and nominations, including 5 Gemini Awards and 2 Canadian Screen Awards. In addition to and eclectic mix of Canadian films and TV shows, he has composed music for over 100 episodes of Murdoch Mysteries.
shelly berger Shelly Berger is an arranger, composer, and producer in numerous music settings, both jazz and contemporary. He worked as a bassist and arranger in Los Angeles for nine years, a time when he recorded and toured with name artists including Diana Krall, the Louis Bellson Big Band, and the Louis Bellson Quartet, while also occupying the Musical Director’s chair with Anita O’Day. Berger worked as an arranger-producer for Sharon, Lois & Bram, Quartetto Gelato, and Matt Dusk, and produced, arranged, and recorded with numerous pop acts. In the broadcast field he served as arranger/ producer for many TV series. To date, Shelly Berger has released four CDs: Solana, The Shelly Berger Big Band, Shelly Berger, and Look Up.
jonathan goldsmith Jonathan Goldsmith is a gifted musician and producer, and one of the country’s most sought-after film & television composers. He has won three Gemini Awards, among many other accolades. Some of his credits include scoring Sarah Polley’s feature films Away From Her and Take This Waltz, and producing albums for Bruce Cockburn, Jane Siberry, Hugh Marsh, and Martin Tielli. Jonathan is a founding member of the Art of Time Ensemble and has been involved in numerous projects with the organization as a performer, arranger and composer.

Jim McGrath is a Toronto-based composer who divides his time between writing music for film and television and composing for the concert stage. His compositions have been performed by a wide range of ensembles including Ottawa’s Thirteen Strings, The Montreal Chamber Orchestra, The KitchenerWaterloo Symphony, and the Hamilton Philharmonic. Jim scored the CBC hit comedy/drama Republic of Doyle, as well as the critically acclaimed series Degrassi, for which he won the Gemini Award for Best Original Score for a Dramatic Series.
Described as a “new music visionary” (National Arts Centre), composer Andrew Staniland has established himself as one of Canada’s most important and innovative musical voices. Among other accolades, Andrew is the recipient of two Juno nominations for Dark Star Requiem in 2017, was awarded the Terra Nova Young Innovators Award in 2016, was the National Grand Prize winner of EVOLUTION (presented in 2009 by CBC Radio 2/Espace Musique and The Banff Centre), and was the recipient of the Karen Keiser Prize in Canadian Music in 2004. Andrew was an Affiliate Composer to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (2006–09) and the National Arts Centre Orchestra (2002–04), and has also been in residence at the Centre du Creation Musicale Iannis Xenakis (Paris, 2005). His recent commissioners include the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Brooklyn Art Song Society, and Les Percussions de Strasbourg. Andrew is currently on faculty at Memorial University in St John’s Newfoundland.
dan parr Dan Parr is a frequent contributor to Art of Time Ensemble concerts, Previous efforts include arranging and composing credits in Herrmannthology and War of the Worlds (2011 & 2012), Songbook 6: Steven Page (2011), and Cantabile: An Evening of Italian Music (2012). More recently, he composed music for Margaret Atwood’s Thriller Suite, presented in The Poem/The Song (2014).
cameron wil son Cameron Wilson, violin is formally a member of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. He is currently a member of Van Django, Joe Trio, the Hard Rubber Orchestra and Mariachi del Sol. He is also a composer/arranger whose works have been performed by numerous symphony orchestras and ensembles and soloists across Canada and the U.S. (including the Art of Time Ensemble). He has collaborated with CBC author and storyteller Stuart Mclean on the History of Canada and has composed several film scores including the NFBs Citizen Sam. Most recently he co wrote a film noir operetta with librettist Kico Gonzalez Risso called Supernatural Noir.

Kevin Lamotte is one of Canada’s leading lighting designers and has created lighting designs for most of the country’s theatre, dance and opera companies. He is Director of Lighting Design for the Shaw Festival and has ongoing associations with the National Ballet of Canada and Toronto’s Soulpepper Theatre Company. Kevin is the recipient of the Province of Ontario’s Pauline McGibbon Award, a nominee for the 2006 Siminovitch Prize in Theatre, as well as other national awards and nominations including the Jessie Richardson Theatre Award (Vancouver), a Dora Mavor Moore Award (Toronto), the Betty Mitchell Award (Calgary) and Prix de la Masque (Montreal). Mr. Lamotte is a member of The Associated Designers of Canada.
Mike Romaniak currently teaches Interactive Music and Sound for Video Games at the University of Toronto, where he works as a Sessional Lecturer in the Music Technology & Digital Media program. He holds a Master of Music in Composition degree from Central Michigan University (CMU), where he studied composition and orchestration with David Gillingham. Mike is a strong advocate for diversity and cultural diplomacy. His Master’s thesis research earned the Robert Newby Fund to Support Diversity Efforts at CMU. In 2018 he co-wrote and produced the audio soundtrack for Ancestors and Elders, a multimedia ballet collaboration between over 100 Indigenous and Ukrainian-Canadian creatives, including Running Thunder Dancers and Shumka Dance Company. As a performer, Mike has toured Canada coast to coast, the United States, Europe, and parts of Asia with several acts. He has contributed to the music and/or production of over twenty albums since 2011. His contributions to Lemon Bucket Orkestra’s Lume Lume (2012) and Moorka (2015) albums helped earn the band two Juno Award nominations for World Music Album of the Year. This is his third production as Stage Manager with Art of Time Ensemble.

Renowned concert pianist Andrew Burashko formed Art of Time Ensemble in 1998 by inviting a group of like-minded musicians and prominent figures in dance, theatre and other art forms to perform one-off concerts in Toronto. The company has gone on to become a leader in Toronto’s vibrant performing arts scene, through its subscription season at the Harbourfront Centre Theatre, regular appearances at Koerner Hall, album releases, performances with leading Canadian orchestras, and the tours of its unique offerings to dozens of cities throughout Canada and the United States. Exploring the relationship between classical music in its many forms and other genres such as jazz, pop, electronica, rock, folk, electroacoustic, gospel and others, Art of Time seeks to reveal the qualities that lie at the heart of all great music.
