About ArtSHINE

What is the OPIC™ Planning System?

OPIC™ refines goal setting and action planning for artists, designers, crafters and creative professionals. Using OPIC™, you’ll establish detailed goals that are realistic, achievable, exciting and inspirational. Drawing on our experience as business lifestyle coaches working with creative clients, we wanted to create an easy-to-use system for the ArtSHINE community.

ArtSHINE is a specialist coaching program for artists, artisans, crafters, designers, fashion labels, and all professionals working in the creative communities. Working extensively with clients, and also drawing upon the knowledge of experienced industry professionals, Vinh Van Lam & Stuart Horrex have worked to create and develop the ArtSHINE program as part of their commitment to support the development of business and entrepreneurial skills of artists, artisans, and all creative professionals. ArtSHINE is here to provide you with all the skills, experience, and support you need to make your artistic dreams a reality. Do what you love to do... Honour your creative spirit... And let it “Shine.” ArtSHINE is all about defining, creating, and pursuing your authentic life path. For more information: www.artshine.com.au

OPIC™ motivates, empowers and helps in any creative practice. It defines your strengths and weaknesses; helps you succeed in key business aspects; refreshes your desire, passion and purpose; gets you organized; and helps you achieve and even surpass your life goals.

The principles of OPIC™ Objective: Achieve those goals. Write them in the present tense as if you have achieved them. Planning: Describe your goals in sequential order, breaking them down into small steps. Implementation: Plan, outline and delegate tasks to complete each step. Detail who will take action, when, and if the action was completed. Commitment: This is critical to completing goals. Focus on why you’ve set out to achieve them and how you’ll overcome challenges, and record the key ‘wins’ in achieving those goals.

OPIC™ how-to guide

Creative people are different. We don’t work the 9–5 grind and rarely have daily tasks to complete. Our challenge is how to use our time effectively. So we’ve designed the OPIC™ planner, a how-to guide that helps you make the transition between you and your art and design business. Get the full version - a printed guide for reference as you read this. You can download the full version on the artshine website: www.artshine.com.au OPIC™ Yearly Planner 2015 Define your “main life areas” and use the yearly planner to map out what you want to achieve. Set several reminders in the year and actively review the goals you achieve. Create new ones and move on from those that are no longer useful. OPIC™ 90-Day Planner A customized guide that helps you focus on your business goals in three key areas: WORK IN your art and design practice: the day-to-day work in the business. Making the product and delivering the service. WORK ON your art and design practice: think of this as the daily management role – planning, business logistics, paying the bills, sales projections, and

running promotional and marketing campaigns. WORK ABOVE your art and design practice: Get an overview, look at the broader picture. Ask questions. What’s the vision, the long-term strategy? Where are you now, and where do you hope to go? Is your work effective and in line with your desire, passion and purpose? Monthly OPIC™ Planner Having set your yearly goals, assign them on a monthly planner. Now you’re ready to move into the planning process. Our planner is a great way to keep you on track, inspired and motivated. Weekly OPIC™ Planner This enables you to check on the goals for the week. Plan out, pencil in and achieve all the tasks you aim to complete, while adapting it daily as changes arise.

Daily OPIC™ Planner This keeps you focused on the three “Must Do’s” of the day. Allocate these tasks from your weekly planner. This gets you into a positive working habit and helps you accomplish your goals quicker, giving you a greater sense of purpose. OPIC™ Achievement Planner Celebrate your successes. Set reminders to update your record of achievements. This is a fantastic way to toast your accomplishments as you hit them along the way. OPIC™ Yearly Planner 2016 Now that you’re motivated, embrace OPIC™ – a system that empowers, challenges, inspires and organises you, and helps you achieve your goals. Now map out your future year.

Perfection to obsession! Are you one of those that goes beyond job fulfilment to the point of obsessing over perfection? Firstly, perfection is unobtainable and secondly, striving for perfection is only as good as realising that you need to control how great you can be. If you are setting high standards and aiming to maintain them, then that dedication will help you achieve the desired results. However, do you find that you’re unable to finish what you’ve started? Then you’re becoming obsessive, and it will stop you from achieving your potential. Here are some tips to realise when perfectionism can be harmful: Endless tasks: Perfection stymies the chance to move on. You find work never ends as you obsess over the smallest details, constantly assessing the job, rather than closing it. Procrastinate: If you’re waiting for the perfect moment, it will never come. Refocus and keep it simple, rather than obsess over the complexities of a job.

Overkill: If you’re constantly adding more to a project and obsessing over the minor details, not only are you on overkill. Less is always more, so step back and see the bigger picture. Pessimist: Over analysing negative views will stop you seeing the positives in a project. Seeking perfection will stop you from being or accepting who you are. Missing the Big Rocks: Perfectionists love the nitty gritty details so much that sometimes you forget the big picture. Instead of focusing on the big rocks you’re focusing on the pebbles and the sand that fill the gaps between the rocks. You are not growing: Seeking perfection will stop you from growing and exploring. If you aim for perfection you will never be happy or accepting of who you are. It can also stop you moving forward to achieve your goals and dreams. You need to strive to be a healthy perfectionist who has their feet

on the ground. By being aware of your aspiration for perfection, you can draw a line and set limits. Want to learn more? It’s as simple as 1... 2... 3... 1. Have a personal chat with Vinh from ArtSHINE 2. Tell us little bit more about yourself and we’ll offer you our insights in a short one on one coaching conversation. 3. Just starting out? Get fit and stay motivated during Winter Does your fitness training regime move into hibernation during the winter months? Do you use any excuse that you can think of to not get out of that warm and cosy bed and head to the gym? Use some of these tips to make sure that the hard work of the previous several months does not evaporate before your eyes. 1. Re-set your training goals. Often one of the goals of the clients that I work with is to look better for the beach or just during the warmer months where we tend to have a bit of flesh out to show. Obviously, this goal is not going to be appropriate during the winter months, when we usually cover every square centimetre of our body and a dip at the beach sounds more like torture than pleasure! Your goal at this time of the year might switch to more of an athletic achievement, such as beating a personal best time on the treadmill or during your run

or lifting a personal best. The goal that you might chose is completely up to you, but SMART goals are very motivating and certainly will help to keep your motivation during winter. 2. Keep the same routine. If you are normally a morning trainer, don’t attempt to start heading in to the gym after work because the evidence indicates that you probably won’t go to the gym at all! As hard as it can be to jump out of bed on a cold and dark winter morning, once you are up and on your way to the gym you will be glad that you have made the effort. As I always tell my clients, the hardest part of training is walking through the gym door! 3. Try something new. There is no better time to look at doing something that you have been putting off, if for no other reason

Chris Dounis - M: 0432 179 939 Your personal trainer than the fact that it will keep you engaged through the difficult winter months. It is very easy to become bored and demotivated during the cold months, so anything that can keep you engaged can only be a good thing. This might mean trying that new class that you kept putting off. Or going for that bay run that you never had time to do. It might even mean getting a Personal Trainer to help you come up with some ideas to help keep you focussed. Yours in health. Chris Dounis.

FEATURED ARTIST

Helen Dubrovich

Helen Dubrovich, born in Germany of Russian parents, migrated to Australia when she was three. When quite young Helen started to travel overseas and this influenced her work which is quite eclectic. She has chosen to work in a variety of mediums with various subject matter, rather than sticking to one genre as she felt staying with one type of subject and one medium would lead to boredom not only to herself but to her viewers. Helen studied art at East Sydney Technical College and photography, then started a career in this medium after completing the Photography Certificate at Ultimo T.A.F.E. She pursued her ‘Apple Season Again’ by Artist Helen Dubrovich career in photography but found A3 Watercolour Paper Timber Gold Foil Frame - $450.00 little time to paint during this period. Great catch up with Anthony, Mum & Dad. Love the new Yum Cha place in Kingsford, well spotted by Anthony & Nick. Very pleased with today as I have achieved my 3 must do. Must do the Artshine article selection tomorrow. My wins for today was the 3 must do tasks and My gain was the Artshow at Balmain, it was very stimulating and inspring. What I’m Grateful for today is a loving partner and grateful for the people I connected today.

Get passionate for your business dream If you’re determined to follow your passion, then here are some tips to help you build a sustainable business. Do you research: Once you know your passion, work out whether you can make money from it and live the life you want. Ask yourself: Are you any good at it? Are you ready and 100% committed to it? Identify successful people: Speak to them on how they started their business, the challenges and what would they do differently?

Select a mentor: Choose a business coach who understands you, your passion, the business and industry. They’ll help you find solutions, hold you accountable, motivate you and help you grow. You should have mentors in different business areas to help you along. A mentor can offer advice, support, networks, and guidance. Honour your Desire, Passion, & Purpose (DPP) and let it shine! When you’re following your

passion, make sure you’re very clear on your DPP. Keep your passion clear, simplify the process and shine on. Take action: If you have the commitment and drive you will be a success. Persistence and repetition will help you learn, build and grow your business. Focus on: Working IN: Creating, and producing designs or products Working ON: Promoting your business Working ABOVE: Working towards your dream and vision If you have confidence and competence, then you’ll be following your passion. We have coached many clients who are living their passions and creating the business lifestyle they’ve always desired.

A trio of business commitments to keep When setting your goals for a creative business, there are three commitments you need to keep true to yourself.

When setting your goals for a creative business, there are three commitments you need to keep true to yourself: “IN” your business: Goals to create your art “ON” your business: Goals to promote your art “ABOVE” your business: Goal to refresh yourself As an artist, you’re already aware of the passion that motivates and drives you on. However, there are questions many creative business owners struggle with: How do I translate my passion into profit? How do I create passive/residual incomes from my passion? How do I balance the time for promoting and creating my art? How do I keep going as my business grows without compromising my passion? At ArtSHINE, we’ve been working with creative businesses for over eight years and have designed The

OPIC™ Business System specifically for them. OPIC™ was inspired by working with creative clients, such as artists, designers, graphic artists, craft people, textile designers and illustrator, artisans and even personal trainers. The OPIC™ business model is a system that resonates with creative people as it helps define their strengths/weaknesses; where they need to focus, how to keep on track and remain creative. It also enables artists to execute, review and follow up their desires; deliver goals every time and helps them prioritise and organise their business. Finally, the last element is commitment as without it nothing will happen. You can write many goals and have all the action plans, but you’ll never succeed without commitment.

This drive launches yourself without hesitation or fear. It’s about deciding that every roadblock or obstacle in your path is merely another step towards your objective. You need to set three goals to build a great business: Create: Without creating you’re not living your passion and not producing any income either. Promote: Without promoting the Art & Design that you have created no one knows what you do, and no one will buy your creations. Refresh: The final ingredient is about ensuring your desires or dreams are not diminished. Rewarding yourself and take the time out to refresh. By being refreshed, we can better create and promote. n

Let your art shine at Sydney showcase Artists and creative entrepreneurs in Sydney are to be given a unique opportunity to showcase and sell their products on a dedicated art platform to retailers and wholesalers. The ArtSHINE Showcase is a workspace within the newlycreated CoSydney art hub that takes the stress and hassle out of promoting and highlighting new art products to the wider artretailing industry. The creation of the first dedicated exhibition space for artists is part of a raft of innovations being created at the CoSydney forum, founded by Vinh Van Lam and Stuart Horrex. Over four floors, CoSydney, located in the Chippendale Creative Precinct, on Blackfriars Street, Sydney, has an art gallery, a workshop/creativity space, and a market/coworking space, offering a range of services for creative professionals. Vinh and Stuart already represent a number of artists and designers to promote and sell their products. So this Showcase is a natural evolution within the business to help new artists connect with their ideal clients in the retail and wholesale sectors Vinh said: “We know that creative people hate doing the selling of their products, chasing customers and thinking up public relations campaigns to get their products out there. “From our experiences, the biggest challenge for a new player in the market is to find ideal clients, and a place where they can sell and promote their

products. Many find it extremely difficult to approach and convince retailers and wholesalers.” He added: “We already do that for a lot of arts-based professionals. This allows them to focus on their art and creative talents. We take the hassle out of selling and help them connect with the ideal client, retailer or wholesaler.” He added the idea of the Showcase would enable artists to promote their products at the ArtShine Gallery and to road test their product before sinking their hard-earned savings into taking the product to a more commercial level. “It’s like their own showroom without the cost and burden of setting up their shop front,” he said. “With a passion for supporting independent artists, we can take care of the rest.” The Showcase will also enable customers to meet artists and designers behind the products. CoSydney also hosts a monthly market showcasing the best art products, enabling artists and designers get the right public exposure, while promoting and selling their products in one space. Artists and designers wanting further details about this unique opportunity should contact Vinh Van Lam: vinh@ArtSHINE.com.au Skype: VinhVanLam Phone: 02 9698 9156 ArtSHINE

NUTRITION MUST-DO: ENJOY BREAKFAST EVERY DAY. I’m sure you’ve heard it many times before – even your mum might have told you this every morning. A wealth of research shows that starting the day with a good nutritious breakfast is the MOST important thing to do to beat cravings, lose weight and give you the focus and energy you need to function properly, whatever your day holds. So… DON’T SKIP BREAKFAST. If you take your health and your job seriously, it’s not negotiable! What is a good nutritious breakfast? Easy! It’s made up of clean protein (yoghurt, eggs, ham, beans, nut butter), complex carbs (wholemeal bread, sweet potatoes, quinoa, brown rice, hummus), some healthy fat (butter, avocado, olive oil, coconut oil) and a (very) limited amount of sugar. If you can, add some leafy greens, too: spinach, collard greens, rocket and kale. I know that might be a bit challenging for many of us, me included, but give it a go. You’ll notice the difference in your energy level very soon. Here are my two favourite winter breakfasts.

During the week: homemade oats porridge with coconut milk. Use quinoa for a gluten-free option. I prepare a batch on Sunday night, heat it up every morning and serve with a few slices of pears or apples or banana, a few almonds or walnuts and a dash of crème fraiche. It only takes 5 minutes. For the weekend, when I have more time, I prepare the ‘ideal’ breakfast: 2 organic poached eggs served with a one cup of slightly steamed spinach, some wild-caught salmon (grilled or poached) with mushrooms, some wholemeal bread, some grass-fed butter, a pinch of natural sea salt and pepper. Heaven! Want more ideas? Email me here: yves@ nutritionbyyves.com.au Don’t forget to allow some time to enjoy your breakfast. Sitting while you eat, chewing to better assimilate the nutrients and enjoying each bite will go a long way towards performing at your best. In the next issue, we’ll talk about healthy (yummy) snacks to be at the top of your game all day long.
