Ten-time Grammy winner puts folk-rock-blues spin on spirituals
Happy,” but he’s legendary for a long list of reasons. For those who don’t know much about McFerrin — besides his infectious hit — the fact he’s received 10 Grammy Awards should be your first clue McFerrin is a musician with breathtaking talent. On April 6, you can witness this talent first-hand, when McFerrin comes to Reno for a one-time performance at the Grand Sierra Resort, as part of the Artown Encore series. Recently, McFerrin took time out from recording to discuss the upcoming show, which is called “Spirit You All.” “For years, I’ve wanted to do a project that claimed my folk, rock and blues influences,” he said. “My fantasy was to form a band with Eric Clapton and James Taylor, but I guess those guys are kind of busy, so the whole idea got back-burnered while I did a lot of other amazing things.” Those projects include collaborating with cellist Yo-Yo Ma on the multi-platinum duo album “Hush,” conducting the Vienna Philharmonic, working with stars such as pianist Chick Corea and comedian Robin Williams, demonstrating the power of the pentatonic scale at the World Science Festival, and spending time with the Muppets on “Sesame Street.” In 2010, McFerrin attended a tribute to his father, and thoughts about that folk, rock and blues project began to emerge once again. McFerrin calls his father “possibly my strongest musical influence,” and the reasons are obvious. Robert McFerrin Sr. was the first African-American to sign a contract with the Metropolitan Opera. He sang Rigoletto with the New York City Opera, and he’s the voice you hear when you see Sidney Poitier singing the role of Porgy on film. “But the only album he ever recorded under his own name was an album of spirituals, just him and the piano, it’s incredible — nobody sings spirituals like my dad,” McFerrin said. “I wanted to honor the truths he instilled in me, to sing with joy and reverence, to remember that all singing is prayer.”

However, McFerrin did not want to imitate his father, but rather to add his own perspective to the spirituals his father used to sing. This is where the folk-rock-blues project really came back into play. “And there it was, the two ideas combined perfectly — a rootsy, folk-rock approach to the spirituals — feel-good music, groovy and danceable, but with lots of heart, mind and soul,” McFerrin said. “I love singing these songs, and the simplicity of the material lets us reach for he moon and stars, really play with lots of musical ideas.” Unlike many of McFerrin’s performances, where he would appear onstage with nothing but a microphone, a chair and a glass of water, “Spirit You All” features McFerrin singing along with a band that includes an accordion, violin, banjo, bass and guitar, as well as “voices, always voices,” McFerrin said. Songs you may hear at the Reno performance include “Every Time I Feel the Spirit,” “This Little Light of Mine,” “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” — all played with a twist of folk, rock and blues. “I’ve written a few new tunes to share, but

he’s performing — and it’s a grand mission indeed. “I want the audience to leave feeling better than when they arrived, I want them to feel the joy and freedom I feel when I sing, I want them to make up silly songs over breakfast the next morning, laugh more easily,” he said. “I want them to feel creative, improvising their way through the world, and I want them to feel prayerful, reverent, grateful for the gift of life and spirit, for the strength to carry on through life’s difficulties, and to enjoy life’s blessings.” ■

we’ll also do some songs a lot of people will know,” McFerrin said. “We’ll put our own spin on those familiar tunes, so be ready for some surprises.” As for how he hopes “Spirit You All” will impact the audience, McFerrin said his mission is the same no matter what show

It’s hard to imagine how working as a Christmas elf at Macy’s
could be anybody’s big break, but David Sedaris is not your average Christmas elf. The bestselling author, radio contributor and Grammy Award-nominated American humorist is famous for turning his own experiences into a poignant comedy about the human condition. Sedaris has kept a diary since 1977 and carries a small notebook to capture bits of overheard conversations, his own quirky observations and hilarious angles on the mundane. He was reading from his diary on stage in a Chicago club, where radio host Ira Glass happened to be in the audience, when his big break came. Glass invited Sedaris to appear on his weekly radio show, and his success there led to a debut on National Public Radio. It was December 1992 when Sedaris read “SantaLand Diaries” on NPR’s “Morning Edition” — all about his experience as a Christmas elf at Macy’s.

In 2010, Glass told The Washington Post that “Morning Edition” received more requests for copies of Sedaris reading “SantaLand Diaries” than any other broadcast in the show’s history. In 1995, Glass became the host of NPR’s “This American Life,” and Sedaris became a regular voice on the program. Around the same time, his writing began to appear in Esquire and The New Yorker, and Sedaris published his first book of stories and essays, called “Barrel Fever.” Since then, Sedaris has written seven more books, including the bestsellers “Naked,” “Me Talk Pretty One Day,” “Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim” and “When You Were Engulfed in Flames.” Today, seven million copies of his books have been printed, translated into 25 languages. In 2001, Sedaris won the Thurber Prize for American Humor and was named Humorist of the Year by Time magazine. His audiobook of “Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album, and his recording “Live at Carnegie Hall” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album.

To fully grasp how Sedaris went from Christmas elf to one of America’s preeminent humor writers, it may help to read a few of his own words. From “Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim: “Boys who spent their weekends making banana nut muffins did not, as a rule, excel in the art of hand-to-hand combat. From “Naked: “We were not a hugging people. The opportunity to watch a master in action is not one that comes
around every day. On February 14, Reno audiences will have that chance, when violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman visits Reno for the Artown Encore series, performing live at the Pioneer Center for Performing Arts. The sheer strength of Perlman’s talents, combined with his considerable charisma, have made him one of the few modern classical musicians who enjoys mainstream success. He has collaborated with and conducted orchestras around the world, and he performed at the 2009 inauguration ceremony for President Barack Obama. It was decades ago when Perlman first became known to American audiences — the Israeli-born violinist performed twice on the “Ed Sullivan Show in 1958, at the age of 18. Since then, he’s made guest appearances on TV shows such as “The

The Give $3 to Keep Artown Free campaign already has raised $37,000 this year.

By Maggie O’Neill
Artown has found yet another show-stopper, and that’s in its Give $3 to Keep Artown Free donation campaign. Consider that in its third year this year, the campaign has brought in $37,000, and the donation drive isn’t over. Yet, this year’s amount is a recordsetter that surpasses the $30,000-plus raised in each of the previous two. And there is still ample time to give. “The Give $3 campaign officially closes on Dec. 31, but historically we know that the envelopes will continue to trickle in after the close of the festival,” said Susan Zeiter, development director for Artown. Organizers established the Give $3 campaign to encourage individuals to feel personally involved. “The campaign is a way to help the community feel invested,” said Beth Macmillan, Artown executive director. “You don’t have to go to the bank and take out a $20.” In fact, donations could be made – and still can – in a number of ways. In July, donations were made through collection containers. Donations can still be made

online at renoisartown.com, through mail or by stopping in at a U.S. Bank branch where Artown organizers had established a donation account. Of these giving venues, the Give $3 envelopes distributed through the RGJ have proven the most popular with giving that way increasing 20 percent since 2010. “The Give $3 campaign is one of the easiest ways for patrons to say thank you,” Zeiter said. One of the reasons for this year’s increase in donations could be due to the programming, she said. “Certainly, programming plays an important role,” said Zeiter. “This year, Artown presented a 45-piece Marine band for the 4th of July celebration and the response was positively overwhelming. Staff and board members received numerous requests from patrons asking us to bring them back next year.” The money received through the Give $3 campaign cover expenses such as artist fees, logistics and set-up. It also helped to partially fund the free World Music Series scheduled once a week in July which, this year, featured performers such as the band Delhi 2 Dublin and Spanish rapper Ana Tijoux.
artown
Although the Give $3 campaign has proven a popular success, it is not the only way that donors can personally donate. Giving is also available through Friends of Artown, or FOA, memberships, which offer special benefits such as 10 percent ticket discounts at year-round Artown events. Membership levels begin at $50 for individuals and $100 for businesses, but students and seniors can take advantage of $25 memberships. Membership levels can also go higher. “We’ve had as much as a $15,000 donation, as well as little as $25 through FOA,” Macmillan said. The membership program has brought in $57,253 this year, again positive for Artown, which had a donation increase through FOA of 6 percent over 2011. As well, the FOA membership grew by 32 percent from last year. While other financial giving comes to Artown through grants, government support and corporate support, Macmilllan said all avenues play an important role in supporting Artown. “They’re all significant to us,” she said. “I really believe that. We’ve been able to uphold the quality of the festival through all kinds of ups and downs and I think it’s because everyone has felt ownership and because they believe in the festival. Every contribution is significant.” So when the monthlong Artown festival returns next July, the Give $3 campaign will again be part and parcel of that event — and, hopefully, even more wide-reaching. “We are in the midst of collecting data on which markets we reached, reviewing which tools we utilized, and how effective our efforts were,” Zeiter said. “Our website is our most precious commodity and we will be looking to see how we can better serve patrons and sponsors with this tool. Certainly technology will play a great part in our 2013 campaign.” ■
