EVENTEEN YEARS OF BRINGING ARTS TO NORTHERN NEVADA…THAT’S ARTOWN. The arts are a vital part of any community, but when you set aside a weekend, or a week, or as is Artown’s case an entire month, just to focus on the arts it allows people to step back from their daily lives and focus on enjoying the festival that’s been created for their enjoyment. Artown never wants to be predictable. We want to continue to drive emotion and help attendees create lasting memories. And as such, we’re making our own mold…again for July 2012. Topping an all time record of events with nearly 500, of which more than 60 percent offered FREE, Artown continues to lead as the nation’s most comprehensive arts and culture festivals attracting more than 300,000 people in 2011 for a variety of events and performances. None of this would be possible without the support of our more than 130 presenting organizations. These presenters are responsible for their events — music, dance, theater, visual arts, performance, hands-on workshops and more. While two of our larger events, Opening and Closing Nights, bring national caliber performers to the banks of the Truckee River in downtown Reno, it’s the unique events that feed our patrons throughout the month. Artown would like to acknowledge and thank the City of Reno for their continued support of Artown since the ﬁrst year in 1996 until now. We’ll see you in the park!

Gearing up for Artown 2012 More than 60 percent of festival is free

OR NEARLY TWO DECADES, Artown has been working to make art accessible to people from all walks of life. With an average of eight free events every day during July, more than 60 percent of the annual festival is free, including the Family Series, the World Music Series, Dancing in the Park, Discover the Arts, Movies in the Park and the Monday Night Music Series. The Artown formula clearly works, blending a broad spectrum of free and ticketed events, from world-class bands and theater groups to wellknown gallery artists and dance troupes. Now in its 17th year, Artown has grown from drawing 30,000 to more than 300,000 attendees annually. “We’re starting to get second-generation people down at Artown now, who were probably sitting on their parent’s lap in the year 2000, and now they’re going down there on their own,” said Dave Aiazzi, who has been a member of the Artown board for nearly a decade and currently serves as chairman. This year, Artown’s opening night is slated for Sunday, July 1, when the Mickey Hart Band, led by the Grateful Dead’s legendary percussionist, will perform for free at 7:30 p.m. in Wingﬁeld Park. Hart and his band will be playing a mix of new material, greatest hits and Grateful Dead songs, as part of the “Mysterium Tremendum” tour. The 2012 festival will close on Tuesday, July 31, with Maceo Parker performing for free at 7:30 p.m. in Wingﬁeld Park. A famous funk and soul saxophone player, Parker’s horn played a prominent role in

the music of both James Brown and George Clinton, and he has collaborated with artists ranging from De La Soul and Ray Charles to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Dave Matthews Band. In between opening and closing night, Artown crowds will have the chance to attend a wonderfully wide array of events, from a dinosaur petting zoo to a performance by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Erth’s Dinosaur Petting Zoo, scheduled for July 9, is one of this year’s ﬁve free Family Series events, which take place at 7 p.m. in Wingﬁeld Park every Monday in July. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band 50th Anniversary Celebration, with special guests Del McCoury Band and Trey McIntyre Project, is one of the festival’s ticketed event, slated for Sunday, July 15, at Grand Sierra Resort. “The incredible thing about Artown is that it’s different every year — different artists and a different vibe,” Aiazzi said. “I really praise the board members for having the vision to take risks and try new things, all in an effort to give the citizens of Nevada the chance to great art.” 5

Preservation Hall 50th Anniversary Jazz, bluegrass and contemporary dance combine in Artown performance

OMETIMES, THE PERFORMANCES COMPRISING THE ARTOWN LINEUP are the result of best-laid plans; other times, they’re a result of divine inspiration. An example: When Artown executive director Beth Macmillan was researching art and music trends earlier this year, an idea crystallized. “The Preservation Hall Jazz Band was performing their 50th Anniversary Celebration at Carnegie Hall in January,” she said. “I’ve been trying to get the Del McCoury Band in Artown forever, and I’ve been dying to get the Trey McIntyre Project as well.” So while talking to Del McCoury’s agent, Macmillan remembers he had a suggestion. “He said, ‘Why not make it a celebration like we did in New York City, and get them all on stage together?’” Macmillan recalls. “I loved the idea of a multi-disciplinary approach, of different genres of art coming together.” Thanks to that suggestion, Artown and the Grand Sierra Resort will welcome the Preservation Hall Jazz Band 50th Anniversary Celebration July 15, featuring the bluegrass sounds of the Del McCoury Band and the contemporary dance of the Trey McIntyre Project. The celebration has only happened in two other places — Carnegie Hall and New Orleans. “It will be an uplifting experience for everyone in the house,” Macmillan said.
