THE IDEA Assos international art laboratory
was initiated by Ă–zdogan Arifoglu in 2010 and concretized in 2013 by the non-profit international association Art Pro Tacheles in the frame of the Mobile Atelier Project (MAP#). Art pro tacheles, as association, is a self administrated, democratic space creating and offering living and working places for artists, creating spaces for free art and culture and thus transport worldwide the idea of the famous berliner art house Tacheles. With Assos international art laboratory (MAP#3), the association aims at offering a haven of expression and hospitality to free contemporary artistic expression and to open cultural exchanges directly inspired by the ancient history of Assos where philosophers such as Aristoteles use to gather, discuss and give open air lessons. The project is carried by the beautiful landscape, its untouched nature and the hospitality of the local people. -The first step of the association, the international laboratory, offers a variety of multifunctional rooms and outdoor areas, all available for work, experiments and exhibitions, open permanently to the public in the attempt to make art and its productions directly accessible to the public. -The project aims at creating two places in the area of Assos. The Assos international art laboratory will extend and lead to the second part of the project: the Assos international artists village installed at the sea side and planned for 2014. The main aim is to organize a social, cultural and pedagogical project participating at inventing new ways to share and exchange competences, and to create a better circulation between the artistic productions, those who make them, the environment of creation and the public in a surprisingly preserved landscape.
4
REGIONAL The project aims participating in a cultural, social and economical level at the local life, implicating the populations in inter-cultural, inter-generational exchange through arts. The association is involved into the preservation of the surrounding landscape and aims at conserving it through developing its project as an ecologically sustainable space, giving an exemple of durable and thoughtfull semi-urbanisation.
INTERNATIONAL
The association’s projects aim at creating a wide international network of artists and art lovers. In Berlin, Art Pro Tacheles counts more than 50 members from 10 different countries. The association organizes ateliers, exhibitions and a residency program for artists from all over the world. Assos International Art Laboratory will be an important base of this international network. The goal of this network is to promote and facilitate freedom of speech and cultural exchanges without boundaries.
5
THE ASSOCIATION: ART PRO TACHELES Art Pro Tacheles is an open community and a legal non-profit association based in Berlin. It was initiated in 2011 by a group of international artists and art lovers. The association’s aim is to substantially promote the development of free art and culture. The concept of this association is to pursue the original idea of Tacheles: to create a democratic space for free art and culture in the city. The association is minimally instutitionalised in order to provide the basic structure enabling the organisation of exhibition spaces and open ateliers for artists and visitors. Art Pro Tacheles aims at simplifying the access to art for all. The association is open to welcome everyone: artists, art lovers, institutions... There is no application form or curatorship. To be attributed a space in an atelier or to become a member, the aspirants have to get integrated in the group, simply by coming and working on common projects or on their own. All space attributions are approved by vote at the weekly meeting.

DEVELOPMENT PLAN
2014: THE ARTISTS VILLAGE
The second step of the project, starting in spring 2014, is to build a temporary artist village directly at the seaside, in the Koyunevi Village (approx. 10 km from assos) located at the nearest coast point to the Greek Island Mitilini (Lesbos). One main aim of the village is to integrate the international network of artists to the local population allowing a substancial cultural exchange.
This village will be designed as a non systematic space, using the concept of neo-traditional architecture. Concretely, the village is organized around a core, a symbolic common atelier surrounded by up to 19 smaller ateliers. The ateliers will be constructed on the base of containers, rehabilitated in fully functional and designed working spaces.
18
The Artist Village will be developed through the delineation of distinct areas destined to specific mansions, using criteria such as: decibel volume impact, and collective / personal space. To the visitor, the Village will extend itself from three successively aligned focal points, the entrance, the main square, and the Main House. From the entrance will follow the main exhibition spaces, which will surround the walkways and the main square. Perpendicularly to the Entrance/Main Square/Main House axis, an area dedicated to low-volume art production ateliers, will create a filter area between the entrance and the back, where the louder art-medium ateliers will be positioned. The widespread use of water collection, gardening for both eating and decorative purposes, and solar-thermal or photovoltaic technologies will be implemented and organised by the central organization. A walkway loop will provide a direct access for artists and visitors around the entire area, whereas the central square will be conceived as the main outdoor meeting point and exhibition space. The Main Building, diametrically opposite to the main Entrance, will provide a more intimate and closed environment where artists, visitors, and organised groups will be able to meet, collaborate, and work together, in any weather conditions.
