Music Is Movement

This class uses the Dalcroze method (also known as eurythmics) as a powerful and energetic way to experience the natural awareness of music through movement. Students will use the whole body as a musical instrument, performing or interpreting music concepts such as meter and phrase. Storytelling, use of percussion, ear training and improvisation, and use of balls, scarves and hoops make this a fun, activitybased class. Dalcroze is an ideal complement to instrumental lessons, or for children who are preparing to learn an instrument. Please Note: Students must be in Kindergarten or 1st grade to enroll in this class.

New Music Theory Program

CSMA’s Music Theory program is an integral part of our complete music education. At all skill levels, students have the opportunity to enhance their private instrument lessons by studying music theory. Why Study Music Theory?

Music theory is reading and writing the language of music. Our program teaches basic music comprehension skills to reinforce and expand on what is learned in private instrument lessons. Studying music theory helps students understand how the pieces they play are organized, making them better ‘readers’ of music. Understanding music theory, and the language of music, makes better musicians.

Interested?

• CSMA Private Lesson students receive a 50% discount on one Music Theory (or other Core Curriculum) class each semester (except summer). • For more information, as well as direction on class placement, contact Heather Paisar, Music Classes Program Coordinator, at 650-917-6800, ext. 312 or musicclasses@arts4all.org.

Program Updates

In Fall 2017, CSMA updated the curriculum for music theory classes to coordinate with the new textbooks. All concepts remain the same, using a new numbering system. For questions regarding Theory class placement, please contact Heather Paisar (hpaisar@arts4all.org).

MUSIC THEORY LEVELS

• Theory 1-8: CSMA recommends levels 1-8 for all students. This is a great foundation of music theory fundamentals and gives students the tools they need to make connections between theory and performance. • Harmony (Beg, Int, Adv): Harmony courses are advanced courses that cover harmonic function and analysis - how concepts are put together to form musical phrases and compositions. These are upper level courses designed for students with a firm understanding of theoretical concepts. • Music Theory for Adults I-IV: Music theory classes are available for adult students at all levels, from beginning to advanced.

Daniel Garcia

“I have worked many years as an early childhood educator and I weave music into my daily curriculum. My background allows me to bring a unique teaching style to my classes, incorporating singing with guitar, musical games, movement and exploration of rhythm instruments.”

Christina Christiansen “I received my musical education from the Ithaca College School of Music, and have experience as an early childhood music educator in the Bay Area. I have a strong background in voice and I love creating music and movement with preschool-age children. I believe that all young children are capable of making music and can benefit from musical exploration.”

Lena Boot

Yuliya Eydelnant

“My passion is working with preschool-age children, giving them opportunities to be creative in art. In the style of Reggio Emelia, I provide a creative art environment that gives children the opportunity to observe, inquire, explore and use fine motor and cognitive skills. Art provides them with an awareness of themselves and their surroundings.”

“I studied music, dance and theater at Roehampton University, United Kingdom and graduated from San Jose State University with a BA in Musical Theater and Dance Education in 2013. I love working with preschoolers! I have experience choreographing dance routines and teaching fine and gross motor skills to dancers of all ages.”

Charlene Chow “I believe in the beauty of the process of art making and experimenting with materials. Nature, animals and the seasons inspire what projects I come up with. My daughter Hattie, who is almost 2 and a half is my best teacher.”

Atreyee Ghosh

“I have been teaching music and movement classes for the last 25 years throughout the Bay Area. My background includes training as a teacher in Music Together, Baby Suzuki, Orff-Shulwerk, voice, dance and studies in early childhood development.”

“My teaching philosophy is to think outside the box to inspire children of all ages to see and appreciate art in their everyday life. I believe that every single person is a born artist. With my hope of making art accessible to all, I bring my enthusiasm, a strong design background, and my love for fellow humans and the world around us to every class I teach.”

Christina Stein

Ximena Vilela

Chaia May

“I have a background in music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. I have taught music and movement to young children for several years and also have a thorough knowledge of brass instruments and music theory. I enjoy exposing young children to the joys of music making!”

“I love encouraging preschool age children to find their own creative individuality through hands on and motor skills experience. I graduated with an AA degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise and have been teaching art to preschoolers for 2 years. I am currently studying for my child development certificate.”
