2019 Annual Report

Dear Friends and Supporters, Reflecting on Community School of Music and Arts’ accomplishments in 2018-2019, our 51st year, I’m struck by how far we have come since the school was founded, but also how connected we remain to our origins. Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of meeting with Natalie Werbner, one of the school’s co-founders. As a child, Natalie was a music student at the South End Music School in Boston, which offered lessons for the children of immigrants as part of the Settlement House movement. As she told me, “These schools had the best teachers possible, but everyone could have access whether they were rich or poor. I thought that there should be schools like this all over the country.” As an adult, she realized that vision by co-founding a new community art and music school, providing access to the arts for everyone, in Mountain View. Many years later, I’m proud to report that CSMA awarded $545,000 in financial aid last year―our largest amount to date. In 2018-2019, CSMA provided access to the arts to over 30,000 students of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. We provided 30 free art exhibitions and concerts to the community. And increasingly, students access the arts with CSMA in locations all over the Bay Area. Our in-school art and music programs now serve students at 54 schools stretching from Daly City to South San Jose. Our Corporate Arts program serves 1,400 adults at their workplaces. And this year, we signed an innovative agreement to establish a satellite location at a new housing development in Belmont. We are also moving forward with the expansion of Finn Center. It is a privilege to be part of a community that values the arts and understands they are an essential part of each of us. On behalf of the CSMA staff, faculty, board of directors and most of all, our students, thank you to all of our donors.

Judy Crates Education Leader and CSMA Board of Directors Member “We’re a very interconnected community and what helps one segment of the population helps us all.” Judy Crates joined CSMA’s Board of Directors in 2013 after serving as an education leader in Silicon Valley for more than 40 years. Bilingual in English and Spanish, Judy has Master’s degrees in Spanish Language and Literature and Education Administration. In the Mountain View Whisman School District, Judy was principal at three schools and Director of English Language Development and Continuous Improvement. Judy does not think of herself as a musician or artist; her connection to CSMA grew out of her career: “I value the arts because I was an educator.” As principal at Bubb Elementary, she saw the impact of CSMA’s Arts4Schools program: “I saw children who did not talk much and who ran the gamut of academic achievement take on almost a different personality when

they expressed themselves through art. Their focus and pride in their art work and the energy they poured into their musical performances often showed me a different side of students.” Judy’s passion for helping underprivileged students has been a theme throughout her career. On CSMA’s Board of Directors, she has been involved in the expansion of the school’s financial aid program, which provided $545,000 in financial aid to needy students in fiscal year 2019. She views CSMA’s financial aid program as a signature contribution: “We’re a very interconnected community and what helps one segment of the population helps us all. That’s why everyone deserves access to the arts whether or not they can pay. Money should not be the defining factor for opportunity.”

Alumni Spotlight:

Taylor Eigsti Taylor Eigsti is known around the world as a leading light of jazz, and the pianist and composer got his start right here at CSMA! A native of Menlo Park, Eigsti began lessons at age six and was quickly labeled a prodigy. At age 12, he was invited to perform with jazz legend Dave Brubeck, and performed for President Bill Clinton several years later. At age 15, he began teaching at the Stanford Jazz Workshop. He has since released

piano, primarily jazz, with two of CSMA’s distinguished faculty members: Temirzhan Yerzhanov and Randy Masters. Before coming to CSMA, Peter studied piano with a variety of teachers and progressed quickly, but found the world of classical piano competitions more regimented than he wanted. He came to CSMA and connected with Temirzhan: “Temirzhan is someone who understands not just the how, but the why. Some teachers tell you how to play each note. Studying with him is about exploring the meaning behind the music.” After quickly recognizing Peter’s talent, Temirzhan nominated him for the Merit Scholar Program for CSMA students who show a high level of mastery and dedication. He auditioned in 2019, and his performance earned him a spot as an “A-level” Scholar— an unusual feat. Peter enjoys performing with like-minded young musicians. “You meet these gorgeous minds that understand music the way that you do. It’s like when glass 8

breaks at a certain pitch—you meet people who vibrate at your same frequency.” Peter also composes his own jazz piano pieces.

Recently, he submitted three of

these compositions to CSMA’s “Imagine Our Future” project with jazz pianist and former CSMA student, Taylor Eigsti. Peter’s compositions will be among many student works that inform the creation of Eigsti’s original composition. CSMA’s scholarship program allows us to provide financial support for students like Peter.
