2017 SPRING CATALOG

Letter from our Executive Director

W

e invite you to celebrate spring with the Community School of Music and Arts! We hope you’ll join us this semester to grow and explore your creativity through music and art at CSMA. One of our beliefs at CSMA is that everyone deserves access to a quality arts education, regardless of their ability to pay. With this in mind, we are proud that we have recently expanded the school’s financial aid eligibility and award amounts to help make the arts even more accessible to children and families in our local community. Financial aid is available for all of our programs, including private music lessons, music and visual arts classes, summer and vacation camps and preschool art and music classes. For information on our simple application process, please see page 34 of the catalog. Here are some of our Spring highlights:

If you’re moved by the beats of the samba and the bossanova, you’ll love our new Brazilian Jazz Combo class (page 23). Our newly expanded Music Theory program (pages 18-20) includes a sequential curriculum in both written music theory and ear training. We’ve added some interesting new art classes this spring: The Art of Textiles, Mixed-Media Mayhem, and Digital Animation. Our Art Mini-Sessions (page 8) allow busy teens and adults the chance to explore an art class without making a lengthy time commitment. For preschoolers, we’ve expanded Little Artists and Little Musicians preschool classes to include our first Little Dancers class (page 27)! On behalf of CSMA’s staff, faculty, and Board of Directors, thank you for being a part of our community, for supporting our programs and for believing in the life-changing power of the arts! Sincerely, Vickie Scott Grove Executive Director

Financial Aid Available for All Programs In keeping with our commitment to Arts For All, CSMA offers tuition assistance to qualified students. To apply, visit our Student Services office or download the forms at arts4all.org.

New Music Theory Program

New for 2016-17, we are excited to launch our newly enhanced Music Theory program!

CSMA’s Music Theory program is an integral part of our complete music education. At all skill levels, students have the opportunity to enhance their private instrument lessons by studying music theory. Why Study Music Theory?

Music theory is reading and writing the language of music. Our program teaches basic music comprehension skills to reinforce and expand on what is learned in private instrument lessons. Studying music theory helps students understand how the pieces they play are organized, making them better readers of music. Understanding music theory, and the language of music, makes better musicians.

What’s New? Supporting our belief that all students should have access to a well-rounded music education, we have broadened our Music Theory program to include ear training at every level. We have also added courses in analysis, history and repertoire. • All music theory classes now include sequential curriculum in written music theory and ear training. • Ear training includes: identification (intervals, scales, chords), rhythmic and melodic dictation, sight singing, style and period. • Theory 3-5 classes are now an hour in length. • Theory 3 is divided into 3A and 3B to give students more time in the fundamentals before moving to higher levels.

New Courses:

• Music History and Repertoire • Music Theory I-IV for teens/adults (8-week courses)

Music Theory Levels

• Theory 1-5: CSMA recommends levels 1-5 for all students. This is a great foundation of music theory fundamentals and gives students the tools they need to make connections between theory and performance. • Theory 6-9: Beginning with Theory 6, the courses focus on harmony and analysis - how concepts are put together to form musical phrases and compositions. These are advanced level courses. • Music Theory for Adults I-IV: Music theory classes are available for adult students at all levels, from beginning to advanced.

Music Theory Exams The Associated Board of Royals Schools of Music (ABRSM), The Royal Conservatory Music Development Program (MDP) and Certificate of Merit (CM) are some of the exam programs in which our students participate. While we don’t require that students complete music exams, music theory classes are helpful preparation for students that are interested in music exam programs.

Our Preschool Faculty In Their Own Words MUSIC Faculty Daniel Garcia “I have worked many years as an early childhood educator and I weave music into my daily curriculum. My background allows me to bring a unique teaching style to my classes, incorporating singing with guitar, musical games, movement and exploration of rhythm instruments.”

Chaia May “I have been teaching music and movement classes for the last 25 years throughout the Bay Area. My background includes training as a teacher in Music Together, Baby Suzuki, Orff-Shulwerk, voice, dance and studies in early childhood development.”

Christina Stein “I have a background in music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. I have taught music and movement to young children for several years and also have a thorough knowledge of brass instruments and music theory. I enjoy exposing young children to the joys of music making!”

ART Faculty Lena Boot

“My passion is working with preschool-age children, giving them opportunities to be creative in art. In the style of Reggio Emelia, I provide a creative art environment that gives children the opportunity to observe, inquire, explore and use fine motor and cognitive skills. Art provides them with an awareness of themselves and their surroundings.”

I have a BFA in Studio Art and Art History from the University of the Pacific with an MFA in Photography from San Jose State. I’ve been teaching art in the South Bay for the past four years. I graduated with an AA degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise and have been teaching art to preschoolers for 2 years.
