Biography Andrew Barnett is UK Director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and previously held posts at the Joseph Rowntreee Foundation, National Consumer Council, HSBC Bank, and at the Arts Council of England. Among other roles, he also chairs the board of DV8 Physical Theatre and of the Novas Scarman group of social enterprises.

Reason for standing for Culture Forum Much of our social and cultural life has become dependent on public subsidy, funding on which we can no longer rely at the levels we’ve become used to. We need to find new ways of leveraging support for organisations and projects we value, to sustain and build on the creativity that is so important to the lives of individuals and communities across the UK.

Biography I have been involved with opera fundraising all my professional life – first at New York City Opera and San Francisco Opera and then at ENO, ETO and currently at Glyndebourne. I have been involved with all aspects of arts funding and thrive on developing partnership and dialogue with all potential funders.

Reason for standing for Culture Forum The time is now to forge a new Private Sector Policy for the Arts and build more substantive win/win partnerships between business and the arts so that the cultural life of the UK can continue to thrive and grow – I look forward to being a part of this crucial dialogue.

Claire Whitaker Director, Serious London Art form: Music Size of Organisation: Large

Biography After 7 years in banking, Claire worked at Decca Redcords, the Southbank Centre and as a Director of the cross-arts festival africa 95. A Director of Serious since 1996, she is also Deputy Chair of the Royal Commonwealth Society, Trustee of the Caine Prize for African Writing and an Arts Advisor for the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.

Reason for standing for Culture Forum I would welcome the opportunity to take part in the Culture Forum and feel that I have much to offer due to Serious' diverse mixed economy, our large network of national and international partners, our role in the Cultural Olympiad, the diversity of our audiences, our commitment to artistic excellence and artistic development in addition to our extensive learning and participation programme.

Damien Hebron Director, London Arts in Health Forum London Art form: Arts and Health Size of Organisation: Small

Biography Damian runs London Arts in Health Forum, an organisation designed to develop the role of the arts in improving health and wellbeing. He also runs the arts programme at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. He previously worked for Arts Professional and in community arts and small and midscale theatre.

Reason for standing for Culture Forum I think it is important that the role the arts can play in changing lives and improving wellbeing is not discarded as funding cuts bite. Organisations delivering the arts in prisons, health and community settings need support and representation to ensure this work continues to improve the lives of all in society.

Biography 20 years experience in the arts sector, including independent, local government and commercial organisations. Detailed knowledge of funding system at national and regional levels and of working directly with Government. Significant understanding of the arts in the East Midlands. Now Chief Executive of the national network of Audience Development Agencies.

Reason for standing for Culture Forum I would bring an extremely rounded and well-informed view of the challenges and opportunities for the sector to the Forum and could also champion the public perspective. As well as extensive regional and national experience and sector knowledge, I would bring strong analytical skills and understanding of data and evidence.

I have successful fundraising experience; EU, public and private sectors.

Biography I am passionate about fundraising and have 11 years of experience of fundraising specifically in the arts in small (All Saints Centre), medium (Derby Playhouse) and large scale (Birmingham Royal Ballet) organisations and across arts forms (community arts, theatre and classical ballet). I have gained valuable experience in corporate sponsorship, trusts and foundations, individual giving, major donors and legacy programmes.

I am abrest of current fundraising practice across the arts, charity and higher education sectors in the UK and in the USA. I have developed fundraising departments and achieved significant results in every organisation I have worked for.

Biography Since 2003 I have run Poet in the City and established it as an important and innovative new poetry charity, successfully attracting new audiences to poetry, attracting money from corporate sponsorship, and raising the profile of poetry as an art form. Reason for standing for Culture Forum Our heritage is a vital part of the UK’s cultural sector, but not always seen as such – even Government has separated it from the arts with the DCMS ministerial appointments. Through devising ‘Discovering Places’ for the Cultural Olympiad I am bringing heritage into the cultural mainstream, and would like to do the same by representing our sector on the Forum.

Biography Janine Irons MBE is the co-founder and Managing Director of Dune Music and Tomorrow’s Warriors.

In June 2006, she was awarded an MBE for Services To The Music Industry. Janine is a Fellow of the RSA. She is also a member of the adjudicating panel for Awards For Young Musicians.

Reason for standing for Culture Forum As a leader in the commercial music industry and the arts education sector for nearly 15 years, I will provide invaluable knowledge to the Forum. I will be able to give vital insights into the impact of funding cuts due to my close working relationships with the young artists we serve.

Biography Jenny’s career has included Arts Council England, Local Authorities, and RFO’s. Her portfolio of work includes Education & Community, Strategic Development, Fundraising and Diversity Development. Jenny is a Clore Fellow, executive coach and currently runs her own consultancy; Take the Space, aimed at finding new ways of connecting people to the arts.

Reason for standing for Culture Forum Footprint figures in 2007, indicate that 3% of the 186,580 people employed in the arts were BAME*. I represent our arts community who do not occupy places within organisations, and have contributed to the arts economy, often with little or no funding. We offer new opportunities for entrepreneurialism, funding, audiences and participation.

Lucy Bird Director of Marketing and Development, The Sage Gateshead Surrey Art form: Performing Arts Size of Organisation: Large

Biography Lucy Bird is Director of Marketing and Development at The Sage Gateshead – the international home for music and musical discovery in North East England. Her current role encompasses all aspects of external relationships including those of media, marketing, ticketing, customer experience, catering, and private sector fundraising.

Lucy has 15 years of experience in the cultural life of the region, including television, theatre and music and has travelled throughout the world and particularly in North America making connections and gaining direct experience of comparative cultural markets.

Biography Mark Pemberton has been Director of the Association of British Orchestras since 2007. Prior to that his career in arts administration includes being Chief Executive of the National Operatic and Dramatic Association, Head of Development at Mountview Theatre School and Administrator of the Drama Centre London.

Reason for standing for Culture Forum As Director of the representative body for British orchestras, it is important to ensure that this sector of the arts, which is likely to come under scrutiny in the forthcoming public spending round and is already substantially reliant on income from private giving, has a voice on the Culture Forum.

Biography 5 years (1993-8) as Assistant Curator at Tate St Ives, followed by a year’s secondment to South West Arts as Visual Arts Manager before being appointed Curator of Towner Art Gallery (1999). Led project to relocate a local authority organisation to new £8.6M building with award winning social inclusion programmes.

Reason for standing for Culture Forum As a Director of a leading regional visual arts organisation within a local authority context I would be keen to explore ways to advocate the value of culture to government, specifically around cross cutting and place setting agendas and to lobby for culture within the strategic commissioning local government environment.

Biography Film Producer Michael G Wilson is a writer-producer and Managing Director of Eon Productions, the producer of the Bond Films. He is a trustee and Chairman of the Development Committee for the National Museum of Science and Industry, London; Chairman of the National Media Museum, Bradford; trustee of the Art Fund; Chairman elect of the Krasner-Krause Book Awards Foundation; and trustee of Cape Farewell.

Biography Philip Flood is the new Director of Sound Connections and was previously Head of LSO Discovery, one of the most significant education and community programmes in the UK. Prior to this he worked as Education Director for Spitalfields Festival and as a Head of Music and Media at a London FE college. He is also a special advisor on music education to a number of other arts organisations.

Reason for standing for Culture Forum As Director of a development organisation representing over 2,500 music leaders and small arts organisations I have a strong understanding of the London and national music education sector and the challenges facing our members. I also have detailed knowledge of the public and corporate funding sectors and would bring a practical and pragmatic focus to the Forum.

Biography I am an experienced arts administrator, having worked in Opera for around 25 years (including ENO and Scottish Opera), and I have been General Director and Chief Executive of Opera North since 1994. Reason for standing for Culture Forum This is a crucial time for arts funding for the sector to be responsive to current economic and fiscal conditions, to be imaginative in developing new business and funding models, and to be a coherent and ardent advocate. I think I can contribute to the Forum and the debate.

Biography From the 1970’s to 90’s I worked as an education specialist for The British Film Institute, Royal Photographic Society, The Arts Council and the OU. Since 1995 I have worked in and for local government, being chair of nalgao from 2002 to 2007. I currently work as a freelance consultant and run a leadership programme for senior managers of local government cultural services. I am also on the board of the Voluntary Arts Network, Somerset Film, Somerset Trust for Arts and Recreation (STAR) and Western Community Leisure.

Reason for standing for Culture Forum I know about the arts funding system from the inside and the outside. I have worked at national, regional and local levels and believe I understand both overarching issues and local consequences.

My current interests are in leadership for the sector and encouraging creativity and innovation in challenging times.

Biography Currently Director of the concert venue St George’s Bristol, providing leadership and working on the artistic programme. Previously, I was Head of Development for the same organisation, raising funds from the private, statutory and charitable trust sectors. Before moving to Bristol I worked for the Musicians Benevolent Fund.

Reason for standing for Culture Forum I rarely put myself forward for groups like this, but when it comes to funding for the arts I know what is happening on the ground, I recognise the specific problems facing arts organisations that work in the regions, and I feel passionate about voicing both my concerns and ideas.
