FALL 2019 COURSE CATALOG
The Art of Craft...In conTEXT I am very excited to open this fall season with a host of new classes, lectures, exhibits and programming. We will kick off this season with the unveiling of The Center’s first public art installation – a project that actually began over two years ago. One of the challenges we face on a campus that contains over 35,000 students – in addition to faculty, staff and the community at large – is visibility. People walk by The Center every day without realizing it is one the most creative spaces in the region – available to everyone. We are excited to unveil two large-scale, ceramic vessels created by our very own Clay Studio Manager, Jennifer Siegel, at our annual Open House on August 20th. These pieces will adorn our entryway and serve as a visual metaphor for the breadth and quality of work made here. I hope you can join us! [See page 29 for more details.] The fall gallery exhibit is entitled, conTEXT: A Calligraphic Journey, opening on September 20th [page 25] and featuring my own works in mixed media as well as homewares, prints, cards, books and paintings. My goal is to highlight the many processes, technologies and possibilities offered at The Crafts Center and provide some “context” for the value of written communication in our digital age. PHOTO BY RON FOREMAN
The revival of hand lettering reflects the continued resurgence of craft and making. Besides the obvious benefits of creating by hand, craft is a lifelong pursuit that offers students the freedom
Calligraphy literally means “the art of beautiful handwriting.” It is derived from the Greek words for “beauty” (kallos) and “to write” (graphein). The rich history of this artform dates back before the 11th century. Today, most students have not had the benefit of taking handwriting classes and most only use digital devices to communicate. The methodology, patience, planning, and creative/technical execution presents a mixture of challenge with the sheer joy of creation. I am very excited to see our calligraphy classes and Workshops filling up quickly. We are adding new lettering styles this semester and have formed a wonderful partnership with The Triangle Calligraphers’ Guild. We have two Guild members teaching here and will host the kick-off reception for the Guild’s fall Workshop featuring renowned author and calligrapher, Annie Cicale, on October 4th. The revival of hand lettering reflects the continued resurgence of craft and making. Besides the obvious benefits of creating by hand, craft is a lifelong pursuit that offers students the freedom and mental acuity to “work from the other side of the brain.” The fact that The Crafts Center remains a vital and integral part of student life here at NC State attests to the University’s commitment to “think and do.” Here, we often re-contextualize that phrase into “MAKE and do.” We take our “MAKE IT HERE” mantra seriously; after all, creativity is who we are and what we’re all about. I look forward to seeing you here this fall!

FREEFORM FACETING: EXPRESSION ON CLAY [Workshop]
Instructors: Jennifer Siegel and John Metzler Design and craft your very own wood and clay tiled serving tray, suitable for your favorite ottoman, kitchen, or a lazy morning in bed. You will begin in the Clay Studio with Jennifer, learning various tools and techniques used to design, cut and finish clay tiles. Vibrant colors of AMACO velvet underglazes will give designs an extra pop! Switching the medium, class moves into the Wood Studio with John who will guide you through the process of cutting, milling, joining and constructing the wooden tray. A selection of woods will be available. For the most part, each class will split time between both studios. Participants can expect to finish setting and grouting tile into their uniquely handcrafted tray during the final class. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the best of both studios — MAKE IT HERE!
Instructor: Brenda Hornsby Heindl Faceting is the removal of clay from the surface and is a great way to challenge the limits of your work, experience playful textures, and push the boundaries of your clay. Add buoyancy to bases and explore ways to create expression on the surface. Bring your cheese slicers, rasps of different shapes and sizes, screen door wire, and a surform tool if you’ve got it, and we’ll explore faceting sides, feet, and bases of forms, as well as discussing covers and reshaping forms once faceted. Students should come prepared to push limits, mess up, laugh while they learn, and explore design rather than plan to make a lot of finished forms on the wheel over the weekend. Class fee includes one 25 lb. bag of clay.

On the first day, you will receive instruction on handbuilding techniques to create three distinct tea bowl styles, in addition to information on foot rings and their importance to tea bowl design and use. You will be encouraged to use more than one hand-forming method to create a single tea bowl.On Sunday afternoon we will prepare and drink matcha from tea bowls provided by the instructor. Above all, tea drinking is a shared and social activity. Class fee includes 8 lbs. of clay.

During firing days, Saturday’s focus will be traditional glaze applications followed by naked raku/horsehair on Sunday. Raku is primarily for decorative artwork, ready to take home the day of firing. This Workshop is intended for both first time and returning raku-ers to try something new. Visit Gaines’s website: www.facebook.com/gainesbaileypottery.

The 2018 Crafts Fair was the largest in The Crafts Center’s history. We will celebrate 35 years this November!
The Crafts Center to Unveil a Very Special Art Installation! It all started as most creative endeavors do – with an idea, or rather a problem that begs to be solved. When Director, Carol Fountain Nix, began working at The Crafts Center, she noticed that many people walk by the front entrance never realizing that it is one of the most creative spaces on campus. She wondered, “What if there was a way to introduce public art that could reflect the remarkable work done by artists at The Center and create visibility for the entrance?” Nix did not have to go very far to find an artist who could MAKE IT HERE — Clay Studio Manager, Jennifer Siegel, accepted the challenge of crafting not one, but two, large ceramic vessels. This installation will be the first public artwork for The Crafts Center, adorning both pedestals at the front entrance. Nothing great comes easily or quickly, and this project was no exception. Siegel began to conceptualize then work on several small-scale models [“maquettes”] . The University’s Public Arts Committee, comprised of architects, artists and fabricators, was then brought in for a presentation of the concept, space and models. The works required the input and approval from the committee in order to move forward. After a number of review meetings, a final model was selected and Siegel went to work on the full-scale pieces – a progress spanning the following year. Upon completion of the forms and measurements, teamwork continued to grow with the enlisting of the University’s metal shop for the fabrication of the installation’s bases. “At 180 pounds of clay each, these are the largest forms I have ever made – a true representation of THINK and DO!” Siegel explained. “This project has been a rewarding challenge for me – one that I cannot wait to look at every day I come to work. Knowing that the students and campus community will enjoy them for years to come definitely makes the journey worth it!”

Give to The Crafts Center Your gift to the NC State Crafts Center plays an essential role in providing arts education to all of NC State’s students and to the greater Triangle community. We offer different ways to support The Crafts Center so you can choose the one that’s best for you. Other personalized opportunities, such as endowments and facilities naming opportunities are also possibilities.
Ways to Give CASH GIFTS Cash gifts are the simplest for a donor to value for tax purposes. You can make a gift today online, by phone, in person or by mail. An unrestricted donation to The Crafts Center Enhancement Fund goes to helping maintain the facilities and equipment in each studio. For example, in the Wood Studio, we recently replaced some older equipment with new machines that have safety stops, which has saved us replacement blade costs – and fingers! The Crafts Center has a vast number of machines that are costly to maintain. Your contribution keeps everything running efficiently so our students and patrons can concentrate on their amazing creations.
STOCK GIFTS A gift of appreciated securities, including stocks and bonds, is an easy way for you to make a gift to The Crafts Center. These gifts provide both significant tax and financial benefits, such as bypassing capital gains taxes and providing income tax deductions.

MATCHING GIFTS Many companies and foundations will double or even triple the value of charitable gifts made by employees and their spouses, board members, and retirees. To find out if a particular company or foundation has a matching gift program, please visit matchinggifts.com/ncsu. If you work for a matching gift company, please check with your Human Resources department to see if you are eligible.
PLANNED GIVING A bequest is one of the easiest gifts you can make to significantly impact The Crafts Center. Your estate planning attorney can include a provision in your will that leaves a lasting impact on The Center and its programs. It’s also easy to designate beneficiaries for assets such as a retirement plan, life insurance policy, bank accounts and investment funds.
CONTACT To set up your donation or discuss your giving plans, please contact: Jill Orr, Director of Development 919.513.4101 or jhorr2@ncsu.edu.

We are grateful to Susan for this donation and will be offering new classes and CRAFTernoons where artists and students can create works in Robin’s memory and honor.
Thompson Hall Remains a Legendary Landmark Dr. Tom Stafford, vice chancellor emeritus for student affairs, is well known for his legendary tours of the Memorial Belltower. He has now added Thompson Hall to his historical tour route, which includes The Crafts Center. Built in 1925, the Frank Thompson building originally served as the campus gymnasium. In 2009, it underwent the completion of a $16.8 million transformation to house The Crafts Center and University Theatre, setting a new stage for the latest chapter in the building’s landmark’s history. During a recent tour, two NC State agricultural engineering alums revisited their old stomping grounds – the Thompson swimming pool. The original pool is still visible as it is now the floor of the wood studio. When the building was renovated, the builders left a piece of history in the floor of the Wood Studio – the original tiles from the pool’s edge, still clearly reading: “ DEPTH 6 FEET, NO DIVING.” Dr. Charlie Suggs ’48 and Larry Stikeleather ’64 both recall taking swimming lessons in the historic pool when the building was the athletic center. “We swam without a stitch on!” they exclaimed. Of course, women at that time were not allowed entry into the pool. Dr. Suggs was the first agriculture engineer in the University’s history to earn his doctorate degree. Stikeleather was one of his students.
Teams That Play Together, Stay Together! The Crafts Center hosted the Wolfpack women’s volleyball team this past spring semester for a clay tile project. The players selected the theme word, “trust” for the design of their tiles, which coincides with this year’s competition theme. The project involves selecting an overall design and theme, then each participant is given an individual tile to carve and decorate. When they are all put back together, they form a single, frameable wall design. Tile projects are perfect for team building activities because they serve as a metaphor for teamwork – each tile is dependent upon the other to form the whole. “Coaches are always looking for opportunities to foster team camaraderie,” Head Volleyball Coach, Linda Hampton said. “Athletes often get into such a bubble because their schedules are so structured and they miss the chance to take advantage of all the other things that are available to them on campus.” With The Crafts Center being a “stone’s throw” from the University’s athletic facilities, the team could easily pop over for an afternoon for a group activity in one of The Center’s many studios. “I love hosting our campus colleagues and helping them make something that is not only creative but is meaningful to their teams,” Clay Studio Manager, Jennifer Siegel, explained. “You don’t have to be ‘creative’ to make something wonderful!” The wall piece will be fired and placed in the women’s locker room where it will inspire the Wolfpack as they hit the court this fall. “We definitely want to do this again!” Coach Hampton said.
