Welcome to Spectrum Miami 2016
Spectrum Miami 2016 Email: info@redwoodmg.com Web: www.spectrum-miami.com Address: Redwood Media Group P.O. Box 360 Hinckley, OH 44233 CEO Eric Smith
I’ve been involved with Miami Art Week since the early days, and I look forward to it every year. Redwood does shows all over the country—from New York City to San Diego, Santa Fe to the Coachella Valley—but Miami remains one of my favorites.
SHOW CATALOG
What is it about Spectrum Miami that makes it so special? For one thing, being a part of the intense excitement that builds before Miami Art Week is incredible. People from all over the world gather to make Miami the center of the art world for one week, so the city is buzzing with anticipation over the events, parties, and fashion shows to come.
Writer and Copy Editor Nina Benjamin
But the main reason I hold Spectrum Miami dear is that it offers people coming to the show a chance to meet the exhibiting artists and gallery owners. And not only do the artists actually come to the show, but many also create their next masterpiece onsite, while giving you an exclusive peek at the process. It’s the perfect opportunity for you as art collectors to talk to the artists, learn their stories, and take home pieces you love. This year, we have an extraordinary lineup of events for you to enjoy. From thought-provoking Art Labs to glorious displays of imagination courtesy of Cirque du Soleil’s Kurios, I’m confident there’s something to dazzle and delight every showgoer. We’d like to give a special thanks to Florida Design Magazine and Planet Fashion TV, as well as all of our other wonderful sponsors, for their generous partnership. And thank you, our fabulous attendees, for making this show a success year after year! We couldn’t do it without you. We hope you enjoy the show!

JAMES PATERSON James was born in Saskatchewan, Canada, and grew up in the Kensington Market neighborhood of Toronto, Ontario. His approach to his art is one of a simple sense of wonder, his aim being to create art that is redemptive, revealing the reality of God in the world in such a manner as to give expression to mystery. James uses materials in a simple way, often incorporating moving parts that viewers can play with. “A trademark of my work is the use of kinetic, hand-driven motion as a compositional element in the art pieces themselves," says Paterson. "I like that the viewer must engage in a tactile way to get the full effect of the art. I want the work I create to be beautiful to look at, invite reflection, stimulate ideas, and then further spark the imagination when you touch it and it moves.” He calls his creations Prayer Machines. “As an artist," Paterson considers, "what would my prayers be like if I used a visual medium instead of a verbal one to express my thoughts, desires, and love to God?” So began his adventure of bending and twisting wire; creating lyrical, ephemeral objects with movement and whimsical dimensions; and attempting to give expression to mystery.

NADYA REGO REGO GALLERY
Artist Nadya Rego is the founder of Surrealistic Impressionism, a vibrant yet daydream-like painting style that places an emphasis on silhouettes. Well-versed in the language of symbols, Rego often uses them, along with artistic metaphors, to deepen the meaning of her paintings. In Rego's artwork, surfaces within the composition pass through the space, undulating in and out of existence, as if to emphasize their affiliation with the Universal Absolute. Inanimate objects and clothes within the composition are often covered with a solid, stationary flat color, emphasizing their material nature and balancing the composition and color by giving the eye a simple space in which to rest. Bold and dynamic strokes balance delicately with the flat shapes of inanimate objects. The effect is a shimmering, sometimes vibrating, set of energetic marks, defining an ethereal subject that melts and re-emerges from its surroundings.

H A N S O N Erin Hanson has been creating art all her life. Through her many travels—photo safaris, backpacking expeditions, and rock climbing trips alike—Hanson has been inspired to transform vistas familiar and rare into stunning interpretations of bold color, playful rhythms, and raw emotional impact. As an iconic, driving force in the rebirth of contemporary impressionism, Hanson is recognized as a prolific, modern master.

JEFFREY BISAILLON Jeffrey Bisaillon, a self-taught artist who has painted for more than 20 years, was born in upstate New York into an artistic family that was rich in creativity. His father’s love of photography, his grandfather’s love of painting, and his great uncle’s love of illustrating were a big part of what led him on his creative path. Bisaillon’s artistic abilities were always nurtured, and from a young age he displayed artistic abilities. Though he did not attend art school, Bisaillon pursued careers—pastry chef, fine craftsman, and builder—that allowed him artistic freedom and helped him develop many of the skills he uses as an artist today.

Bisaillon has painted in many genres throughout the years, but his biggest connection has been with the abstract. Most of his work is achieved through his process of applying and removing paint in methodic layers of color and technique. He is in constant search of that perfect fusion of color and allure in order to entice one's freedom of thought and emotion. His vibrant color pairings, bold brushwork, and resin finishes create energetic pieces that jump off the wall. He is fascinated by making the simplest shapes into things of beauty, and strives to stay at the forefront of cutting-edge art and design.

Roy Rodriguez is known for his contemporary paintings of figurative female figures with heart-shaped lips. Using his childhood memories of Cuba, he passionately projects the hedonistic reality of his native island utilizing vibrant colors and exploring the exotic. He discovered his passion for art at an early age and is a self-taught artist who has been schooled in the techniques of the great contemporary masters. “There is something that fascinates me about colors, and I love to use them on my canvas," says Roy. "I’m always searching for rich and translucent textures, obtained through various materials and tools that I use to create my mixed media, acrylics, and oils in the pursuit of my subject matter—the female figure.”

OSCAR ABREU Dominican painter Oscar Abreu's work centers on the issues of psychological causality. Through his art, coined psycho-expressionism, he asks what events cause us to become the people we are today. To answer these questions, Abreu has developed a language of patterns over his career, tokens that continually present themselves in his works. These tokens are formulated through brush strokes, vivid colors, scratches, and collages, and serve as symbols that reflect the elements that he believes make up the human psyche. Abreu’s style is not concerned only with aesthetics, as has been the tradition in art from the Dominican Republic, nor is it exclusively tailored to the representational. His work obsessively dedicates itself to questions concerning human nature, yet it is also intensely subjective, drawn from his personal experiences marked by pain, anguish, disbelief, and, above all, an underlying happiness. Like all artists, Abreu wants the spectator to feel his work and wants the audience to draw its own conclusions. He looks to create interesting art that inspires and awakens, and hopes to impose an internal command for reflection. He desires always to convey a message and arouse emotions.

Cruz's work has been displayed, among other places, at the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta, Florida International University, the Agora Gallery in New York, and on murals in Miami's Wynwood District. He looks forward to showing his new work in Spectrum Miami during Miami Art Week 2016.
Mexican artist EfraÍn Cruz paints of his people and for his people. The main subjects in his vibrantly colored paintings are people who inspire him, whether they be family members or everyday people from his native city of Veracruz. "Life in Mexico is a major influence in my work and it is often portrayed in my artworks," says Cruz. "My hometown's culture, rich history, and deep sense of spirituality is reflected by my bright and colorful palette." w

LaunchPad Artist Luis A. Gutierrez Luis A. Gutierrez was born in Cali, Colombia, in 1990. When he was 13, his family moved to South Florida, where he began exploring art as a pastime. Soon after, his art evolved into a more serious pursuit. Gutierrez, fueled by his passion for creativity, dove into his work and began training with artist and teacher Al Razza. He then attended Broward College, where his works were included in many student exhibitions. He was also chosen to create a 10’ x 12’ mural in Fort Lauderdale for Florida Atlantic University and Broward College. LaunchPad Artist Luis A. Gutierrez
Gutierrez has been part of group exhibitions at private galleries and at the Coral Springs Museum of Art. His most recent solo show, “Boats and Planes,” was held at Razza School of Art and Gallery in Coral Springs. He was also featured on Telemundo’s “Con Estilo TV,” and was recently selected as a semi-finalist for the 2016 Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series. Of his inspiration and mission, Gutierrez explains: “In today’s world we are constantly bombarded by advertisements, music, movies, and multimedia of all kinds. I am always questioning and observing the effects they have in our daily lives. It is these influences that make me want to stimulate the viewer in a more intellectual manner, with artwork

that questions and provokes a meaningful response from them.” He starts each piece by researching photographs and interviewing his models and he then transforms that knowledge and imagery into a painting on canvas, using oil, acrylic, and enamel paints. “Then I pair the images with words to make a new vital statement,” Gutierrez says. “It is this pairing of elements that allows my thoughts and feelings to be seen on canvas, and becomes a personal statement of my experiences and reactions to so much overload.”

Collector Profile Gary G. (Palm Springs, CA) Palm Springs is a desert land of dry heat attracting movie stars, snowbirds, and retirees, with more than 100 gated residential, country club, and highend gated neighborhoods made up of Mediterranean, mid-century modern, and contemporary architecturally designed homes. Many retirees sold their traditional fine art and antiques before moving and starting their new desert life with more youthful modern and contemporary fine art and luxurious home furnishings. And it’s there that our featured collector Gary G. has established his remarkable collection. We talked with him about his unique approach.

HIS STYLE
I like to layer my home in exciting fine art, like people layer themselves in luxury clothing. I had to buy my home with lots of large walls in able to display my art collection well.
ROOTS OF COLLECTING
My parents raised us in Phoenix surrounded by original fine oil paintings and traditional bronze sculpture, which I learned to appreciate during my youth. BACKDROP FOR THE ART
My home is decorated mostly in natural colors, so the art provides a pop of color and stands out dimensionally, with both fine sculpture and my favorite painting style of “photorealistic” figurative oil paintings of things and ideas I appreciate. 60
LOVE OF SCULPTURE
After a trip to NYC several years ago to discover Artexpo New York, I found myself so excited that I purchased six contemporary fine art sculptures there. I really enjoy collecting contemporary sculpture because it’s so dimensional and tactile, different from each angle. FAVORITE WORKS
My favorite oil paintings are Alexi Torres’s “Grand Central Terminal” and “Happiness Flag,” a painting
(At left) Contemporary stainless steel, hand-painted sculpture by Brad Howe; patinated bronze sculpture by Thomas Wargin; antique multi-colored marble bust of a Roman warrior; (Center and inset) Grand Central Terminal by Alexi Torres, 11’ x 7’ oil painting
of 200 memories of my life woven together on canvas, and Jorge Santos’s “First Working Expedition”—each very creative, excellently detailed, handpainted oil on canvas. GREATEST REWARD
It’s most rewarding to experience a large display of fine art—to attend fine art fairs where there are more than 50 art gallery booths to enjoy discussing art styles and values. WHY HE BUYS
I prefer to purchase art that brings me joy with its originality, quality color choice, and an amount of difficulty of creation and application by the artist.
My Favorite Happy Memories by Alexi Torres, 6’ x 10’. Torres’s oil paintings comprise more than 22 layers of paint to reach the desired effect of a 3D U.S. flag in red, white, and blue, woven in with 200 images on the canvas. Creating this basket-woven effect is an effective way for Alexi to incorporate Gary’s memories into the painting while paying homage to his own father, who was a basket weaver in Cuba

[ SOLO ] A Focus on Independent Artists
This year, Spectrum Miami will include an exciting new event: [SOLO]. While independent artists have always been given the opportunity to exhibit at Spectrum Miami, [SOLO] will be a featured section within the show that showcases work from both emerging and established unrepresented studio artists. After many years of successful [SOLO] exhibitions at Artexpo New York, we’re thrilled to be expanding the concept to several of our other contemporary art shows, including Spectrum Miami. Hosting more than 30,000 avid art enthusiasts annually, Spectrum Miami is a highlight of the renowned, always-electric Miami Art Week. And with [SOLO] now incorporated into this iconic art event, it’s a rare gem among a gallery-heavy lineup of shows—in fact, Spectrum Miami is the only large-scale show at Miami Art Week to feature independent artists! That means two things: tremendous exposure for the artists themselves, and the thrilling opportunity for you to get a peek at some of the most extraordinary up-and-coming artists from around the world. We invite you to dive in, explore, and enjoy the raw talent on display. THIS IS [SOLO]...
