Welcome to the Moss Arts Center’s 2019-2020 season. In addition to the rich range of experiences you’ve come to expect at the center, the season ahead embraces two special themes that are both personal and universal: home and women. Artists invite us to delve into the idea of HOME in many ways next year. The term home means many different things to each of us at different times. Home can mean that physical place where we eat and sleep. Sometimes it conjures memories that we carry with us wherever we are. And home can mean places where we long to be, or to return to, someday. Whether past, present, or future, home always is intertwined with the people we find there—be it a house, a campus, a town, or a country. This year we welcome a dynamic group of female artists across all genres who are leaders, innovators, and provocateurs as we amplify powerful voices of women from around the world. We all know and admire FIERCE WOMEN in our lives—the toddler niece who has to climb trees, the single mother who works days and attends night school, the older sister who breaks glass ceilings. With courage and creativity, women bring meaning, contemplation, and vibrant expression to our stages and galleries in 2019-2020. I think you’ll find each of next year’s artists and programs something special to write home about. Please join us. With warm regards, Ruth Waalkes Associate Provost for the Arts Executive Director, Moss Arts Center

Sirius Quartet champions a forward-thinking, genre-defying approach to performing that makes labels like “new music” sound tame. New World explores the personal and political challenges of life in the 21st century. Violinist Gregor Huebner’s award-winning composition New World Nov. 9 2016 is the centerpiece of the program, contrasting idyllic, hopeful themes of Dvořák’s Largo from New World Symphony with the brutal gestures of Shostakovich’s String Quartet, no. 8. © Philip Nemenz

GEOFF SOBELLE HOME
A visual physical spectacle, HOME combines dance, illusion, live music, home-spun engineering, and an inventive use of audience interaction to compose a work that asks, “Where is home? If it is not a place, what is home?” On stage, a house appears from nothing. It goes up fast, choreographed like time-lapse photography. Residents move in, move out, get married and divorced in it, grow up in it, die in it, haunt it. HOME aims to awaken us to current housing dilemmas, local and global.
