a warm arts center WELCOME!
We hear it all the time, “This show is amazing! Where does it go from here?” Well, the short answer is: it doesn’t!
The longer explanation — especially for visitors new to the Arts Center and island — is that we produce five shows a year, created from cast to curtain, just for our stage, at this specific point in time, for you. What you are experiencing when you come to one of our theatrical productions is completely, entirely unique!
Producing includes casting professional actors, imagining and building the sets, designing costumes and lighting, hiring the director, choreographer, and musical director, housing the actors and creative team, rehearsing, and then finally offering Broadway-caliber theatre.
Currently, at the printing of this issue, our senior management team is carefully planning our 2024-2025 five-show season of theatrical productions. You will soon hear our exciting season announcement and we promise you’ll be delighted at what’s in store!
In addition to our spring and summer productions of Beautiful and have three summer presenting sensations to add to your calendar – two amazing comedians Henry Cho (July 15, 4:00pm & 7:30pm) and Caroline Rhea (August 5, 4:00pm & 7:30pm). And over Labor Day weekend, we are bringing you
Black Jacket Symphony’s “Whitney” (August 30 & 31), capturing the iconic sound of the one-and-only Whitney Houston.
Our younger friends (ages 6 through teen) can beat the heat during our summer camps (June 17 – July 26). See page 40 for the lineup that includes both performing and visual arts. To learn more, visit our website at www.artshhi.com/camps. Camps fill up quickly so get your budding artist or actor registered!
We are elated that you’ve chosen to experience one of our region’s greatest cultural treasures … the award-winning

A Song-Filled Journey Through Carole King's Hit-Making Life
We are overjoyed to deliver a powerhouse production of the Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical during our spring season (April 24 – May 26). Directed by the award-winning Tara Jeanne Vallee, this production takes audiences on a journey through the life and iconic music of beloved singer-songwriter, Carole King.
The story follows King's rise from a Brooklyn teenager (named Carol Kline) with a knack for songcraft to her legendary status as the voice behind her groundbreaking album "Tapestry." Along the way, audiences are treated to timeless hits like "You've Got a Friend," "One Fine Day," "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," and many more.
This production of Beautiful captures the essence of King's musical genius – writing
for groups like the Drifters, the Shirells, and even Aretha Franklin – set against the backdrop of her own inspiring personal story. The magic comes to life through a talented cast, dazzling sets, and vibrant energy. Vallee's skillful guidance ensures that every moment resounds with both heartfelt emotion and joyous musicality.
The original Broadway production of Beautiful garnered widespread acclaim, with critics praising its authenticity and stirring score of hit after hit. The New York Times hailed it as “A joyous, moving, and altogether wonderful portrait of a woman who conquered the world with her music.”
Get ready to feel the earth move under your feet as you experience the timeless music and captivating story of Carole King! Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is an absolute treat for fans of the music icon or simply for anyone who loves a fabulous night of non-stop entertainment.

PURE RAZZLE-DAZZLE
Scandal, satire, and sizzling choreography are the tantalizing hallmarks of the Arts Center’s summer production of the iconic musical Chicago, onstage June 26 – August 18.
Under the experienced direction of Russell Garrett, who returns to the helm of this beloved production, audiences are in for a theatrical experience that echoes the energy and excitement of Broadway itself.
With a record-breaking run on the Great White Way, Chicago has secured its place in theatrical history as a theatrical powerhouse. As the longestrunning American musical and the second longest-running Broadway show, this darkly comedic piece first captivated audiences in 1975, but it was the 1996 revival that catapulted it to legendary status. The musical's blend of catchy songs, Bob Fosse's signature choreography, and a razor-sharp critique of celebrity culture has proven irresistible — and relevant, perhaps now more than ever — with generations of theatergoers.
Set amidst the roaring decadence of the Windy City in the 1920s, Chicago follows the trials and tribulations of the cynical and sexy duo of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly – two ambitious women who find themselves on death row for murder. With the help of their cunning lawyer Billy Flynn, they transform themselves into media darlings – and rivals – while twisting their trials into sensationalized spectacles.
Our summer production promises to honor venerable Broadway legacy while captivating patrons with its iconic numbers like "All That Jazz," "Cell Block Tango," and "Razzle Dazzle." Garrett's experience with the show ensures a deep understanding of its nuances, promising a production that will thrill both newcomers and longtime fans.
Beyond its dazzling entertainment value, Chicago offers a timeless exploration of the fleeting nature of fame and the manipulation of justice within a media-driven society. The satirical story invites audiences to consider the cost of ambition and the seductive power of the spotlight.
Prepare for an evening where captivating storytelling, dazzling dance, and a wicked sense of humor collide.
Tickets go on sale May 22, and the musical will run June 26 through August 18. For more information, visit the Arts Center's website artshhi.com or call the box office at (843) 842-ARTS (2787).

HENRY CHO
SouthernUpStandup
Southern charm meets Asian wit in the hilarious standup routines of Henry Cho. This veteran comedian, known for his signature blend of folksy anecdotes and self-deprecating humor, is returning to the stage with fresh material that promises to tickle funny bones. Cho will be performing his latest act at the Arts Center July 15, and we are thrilled to be welcoming him back!
Cho's career boasts an impressive list of achievements. He's a Grand Ole Opry inductee, a feat not accomplished by a comedian in nearly 50 years. He's graced the stages of The Tonight Show and The Late Late Show, and even fronted NBC's Friday Night Videos for two years. But for Cho, the heart of comedy lies in live performances and an audience’s energy.
His brand new “From Here to There” Tour 2024 delves into the ever-changing landscape of modern life, with Cho's unique perspective taking aim at everything from the trials of navigating
social media to the challenges of maintaining a youthful facade (especially when you secretly crave a nap at 3 pm).
Fans can expect Cho's signature southern drawl to deliver jokes that resonate with everyone. Whether you're reminiscing about childhood or facing the absurdities of the present day, Cho's comedic observations will have you nodding in agreement and erupting in laughter.
Cho's summer performances at the Arts Center are a chance to ditch the stress of everyday life and relax into an evening of side-splitting humor. After all, laughter truly is the best medicine, and with Henry Cho at the mic, you're guaranteed a healthy dose.
Don't miss the beloved and lovable Henry Cho on the Arts Center stage July 15, with two shows: 4:00pm and 7:30pm. Get your tickets today by visiting tickets.artshhi.com or by calling (843) 842-ARTS (2787).

BLACK JACKET SYMPHONY’SWhitney Labor Day Weekend AUG 30 & 31
The Black Jacket Symphony, known for meticulously recreating classic albums live, is taking on the music of one of the most powerful voices of all time: Whitney Houston. This exciting show at the Arts Center August 30 & 31 not only promises a note-for-note rendition of Houston's iconic "Whitney" album, but also a second act filled with her greatest hits.
Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1963, Whitney Houston was surrounded by music from a young age. Her mother, Cissy Houston, was a renowned gospel singer, and Whitney began performing in church choirs at a young age. Her exceptional talent was undeniable, and by her teens, she was already modeling and singing backup for established artists.
Houston's breakthrough came in the mid-80s with her self-titled debut album. It became the best-selling debut album by a female artist at the time, and with hits like "Greatest Love of All" and "Saving All My Love for You," Houston firmly established herself as a global superstar. Her voice, a soaring blend of power and grace, resonated with audiences worldwide.
"Whitney," released in 1987, solidified her status as a music powerhouse. Featuring iconic tracks like "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)"
and the Grammy-winning ballad "I Will Always Love You," the album not only topped charts but transcended genres. It showcased Houston's versatility, from dance-pop anthems to heart-wrenching power ballads.
With two nights at the Arts Center over Labor Day weekend, Black Jacket Symphony promises to transport audiences back to the era and emotion of this one-of-a-kind artist. By faithfully recreating the sonic landscape of "Whitney," complete with a full band and a talented vocalist channeling Houston's spirit and sound, the show offers a chance to relive these timeless songs. The second act, featuring Houston's other chart-toppers, ensures a night filled with unforgettable music.
Whether you're a longtime Whitney Houston fan or simply appreciate exceptional music, the Black Jacket Symphony's show is a must-see event. It's a chance to celebrate the enduring legacy of a vocal powerhouse and experience her music in a whole new way.

Through the Lens of Theater
GUSTAVO RATTIA
For nearly a decade, Gustavo Rattia has worked with the Arts Center in various capacities, and since the first time he photographed one of our production’s dress rehearsals, he has grown to become an integral part of our team.
A true multi-hyphenate, Gustavo’s pursuits and passions are extensive: photography, videography, projection artist, businessman, engineer, actor, musician, creator … and perhaps his favorite titles of all: husband (to his lovely wife, Rossany) and father of two (ages 14 and 6).
Originally from Venezuela, the leftbrained/right-brained Gustavo obtained a degree in Systems Engineering while simultaneously pursuing artistic endeavors within both theater and music during his college years and beyond.
His artistic journey began by performing in plays and musicals, spanning eight years of his youth and early adulthood. “There were times during college that I was involved with three plays at one time, while keeping up my studies,” Gustavo recalls with a laugh. “I don’t know how I did that!”
During this time, not only did he showcase his talents onstage, but offstage Gustavo thrived in the technical aspects of performances, delving into lighting, sound design, and other behindthe-scenes work.
In 2003, Gustavo’s vocal talents were recognized by a Musical Director who recruited him to be part of his prestigious traveling group, the Rapsodia Chamber Choir.
Singing bass with Rapsodia, this musical adventure led him to international competitions including the world choir games in Germany, China, Austria, and the USA. These diverse experiences, coupled with his artistic sensibilities, fueled Gustavo’s passion for

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
He relocated to the United States in 2015 and joined WHHI TV as a Production Coordinator. After meeting VP of Marketing Andrea Gannon in the studio, Gustavo began at the Arts Center as a freelance photographer and videographer.
“The first time I walked into the Arts Center, all of my wonderful time and memories in theater came back to me,” Gustavo said.
“It felt like I had come home.”
Since those early days, Gustavo’s client base has greatly expanded, while becoming deeply rooted in his Lowcountry home through work, family, and community involvement.
His contributions have burgeoned with us as well, having lent his talents as a Projection Designer in the Arts Center’s productions of Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, In the Heights, and most recently, Holiday Inn
In 2022, Gustavo and Rossany founded Oceano Blue, a media production and photography company. Their successful entrepreneurial endeavor now encompasses Oceano TV, which they created to provide Hispanic digital
television to the region. Oceano Blue was honored with the Oyster Award, the Greater Bluffton Chamber of Commerce’s Member of the Year (2022) and with their highest honor, the Pearl Award for Business of the Year.
Gustavo was also recently invited to be the keynote speaker at the first annual SC Latino Student Summit at University of South Carolina Beaufort in conjunction with the SC Commission on Minority Affairs in Bluffton.
“We are proud to have Gustavo as part of our Arts Center family,” said Arts Center’s President/CEO Jeffrey Reeves. “We trust him to deliver an excellent product, but much more than that, we value him professionally and personally.”

Dr. Robert Chell
JAN 22, 1943 - MAR 5, 2024
All of us at the Arts Center, along with countless others, bid a sad goodbye to our dear friend and trustee Bob Chell this past March.
Bob had a rich and wonderful life, shared with his devoted and cherished wife Beverly. Together, they traveled the globe, and cruising was Bob’s favorite mode of travel.
His multifaceted career encompassed academia with a Ph.D. in Industrial Psychology, a thriving consulting practice, and an altruistic, philanthropic spirit. He served on our Arts Center board for years, and was always available to the staff to lend a hand in any way he could.
“Bob was completely dedicated to the mission of the Arts Center, both in its artistic endeavors and in educational programming. As generous as he was as a donor, he was equally generous with his time. He will be, and already is, greatly missed.” — Jeffrey Reeves, President/CEO

In the workshop the kids learned to create carved miniature foam puppets called "Foamies." Using rods for control, they made their puppet creations come to life!
