Art.Science.Gallery. is an art gallery and science communication space featuring science-related art in Austin, Texas. We are a local, woman-owned small business that collaborates with artists, scientists, and other galleries and museums to produce art exhibitions of science-related art. Our goal is to create and cultivate a community space where artists and scientists can forge new and collaborative relationships and where everyone can rediscover science through new lenses. Our mission is to provide a friendly environment to make science more accessible to everyone through science-related visual arts exhibitions, to foster the careers of emerging and established artist-scientists and to provide professional development opportunities for scientists to become more engaging public communicators.
We offer opportunities for curious and enthusiastic people to learn more about scientific topics that are very relevant to everyday life and are often discussed in the news and current events, yet are difficult to access outside of a college classroom. While there are abundant opportunities in our community to take art, culinary and business classes, access to informal science classes is lacking. Many class offerings in the sciences are simply not available outside of expensive college courses with prerequisites. We also believe that integrating the arts into these courses makes them more accessible and enjoyable!

Registration Policy | Payment is required in full the day you register. Class registration closes 48 hours prior to the course start time. In the event that you can no longer attend, registration may be transferred to a friend or family member. Cancellation Policy | We will happily refund your registration, less a 25% cancellation fee, up to 14 days prior to your class. Please note that cancellations made with less than 14 days notice are not refundable. We reserve the right to cancel or reschedule a class if it does not make a minimum number of registrants—we will notify you 48 hours in advance. Should we have to cancel the course, we will provide a full refund. How do I Register | Course Registration can be completed online at artsciencegallery.com/labs or by phone at 512.522.8278. Please contact laboratory@artsciencegallery.com with any questions. What should I bring | Each course has different supply needs. Prior to the course or workshop, attendees will be informed by email what supplies, if any, they should bring. Who teaches A.S.G. courses | Because Art.Science.Gallery. is a multidisciplinary organization, instructors come from a variety of scholastic and professional backgrounds including (but not limited to): arts, sciences, liberal arts, communications, and public affairs. If you are interested in teaching a course, please complete the Course Proposal Form available on our website or contact laboratory@artsciencegallery.com How is a course different from a workshop | Workshops typically have one 2 – 4 hour meeting, highlighting a specific subject, technique, or skill area. Courses are longer term, exploring a broader subject over several weeks, and meetings and are generally taught at the freshman undergraduate level. Both workshops and courses can either take place in the gallery or out in the field if a field trip or fieldwork lends itself to the class’s learning objectives. Any field trips or alternative locations will be mentioned in the course description.
course descriptions ESCI 101 | Conservation Biology Instructor: H. Gillespie Wednesdays October 28 - November 18, 2015 • 6:30-8:30pm Field Trip: Sunday November 8, 2015 • 12:00-6:00pm $75 per student Learn the essentials of conservation biology through global and local conservation stories, including threats to biodiversity, solutions to conservation problems and protection of endangered species. This is a lecture-based class with a field trip. SCOM 101 | Creating Data and Information Visualizations Instructors: S. Morris & E. Weerts Tuesday November 3, 2015 • 6:30-8:30pm $30 per student Effective visuals play a critical role in communicating scientific data and complex ideas to a diverse audience. This interactive workshop will help scientists and other researchers explore best practices, resources, and tools for creating data and information visualizations that tell compelling stories. Hands-on guidance during the workshop will assist attendees with current projects, so be sure to bring your computer and ongoing research. MATH 101 | Hyperbolic Crochet Instructor: F. Futamura Sunday November 8, 2015 • 2:00-4:00pm $35 per student

As Euclidean geometry describes flat objects like tables and buildings, hyperbolic geometry describes frilly objects like lettuce and coral. For over a hundred years, mathematicians tried to create a good physical model of hyperbolic planes without much success. It wasn’t until 1997 that Dr. Daina Taimina produced a beautiful model using simple crochet. In this workshop, you’ll learn a little about hyperbolic geometry and how to crochet hyperbolic planes, which you can use to then create crocheted coral reefs, unique scarves and gorgeous abstract sculptures. Youth under 16 must be accompanied by a registered parent or guardian. All students must know how to single crochet and how to crochet a magic circle (links will be provided to learn this before you come to class).

Dr. Hayley Gillespie is an ecologist and conservation biologist and has been a teacher of natural history and field ecology at the University of Texas at Austin and Southwestern University.
Artist and mathematician Dr. Fumiko Futamura is an associate professor of mathematics at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, where she teaches math and art classes.

A librarian and non-profit director, Sarah Morris has a decade of diverse experience working as an educator and program coordinator in museums, libraries, schools, and higher education environments. In 2014, Morris co-founded Nucleus Learning Network, a non-profit dedicated to supporting, connecting, and empowering learners, educators, and mentors interested in strengthening Austin's innovative learning community.
Emily Weerts is a program manager who has developed and managed STEM focused education courses and visual and multi-disciplinary art based events. With eight years of experience in education, non-profit, and arts program coordination, she is driven to bring vision and structure to complex projects. In 2014, Weerts co-founded the Nucleus Learning Network, where she currently serves as the co-director.
