sculpture. The Palladian mansion was built in the 1720s for Britain’s first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, who assembled one of the country’s greatest collections of European art. Later, however his indebted grandson had to sell the collection’s paintings to Catherine the Great of Russia. Now home of the 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley, Walpole’s descendant, Lord Cholmondeley continues in the collecting tradition this time with a focus on contemporary outdoor sculpture. The first commission was SkySpace by James Turrell in 2000. The piece is best appreciated at dusk, when the hidden light suffusing the interior creates a strong contrast with the 16 |

sculpture trail after the success of the 2016 Pigs Gone Wild Art Trail. This year Elmer’s Big Parade, Suffolk will see 50 painted model elephants stampede across the town from June to September, raising money for St Elizabeth Hospice. Head to the north of the county to the village of Mendham, to see the birthplace of another famous Suffolk painter Sir Alfred Munnings. Many of his paintings were set in the grounds of Mendham Mill, his childhood home. Visit Sudbury to explore Gainsborough’s House the birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough. Now a museum, the house has a permanent collection of the artist’s work and also hosts an exciting programme of exhibitions throughout the year. Snape Maltings, near Aldeburgh, houses galleries, plus an impressive collection of sculpture including works by Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. Continuing this rich artistic tradition, Suffolk is home to many artists and thriving arts societies and exhibitions both inland and on the coast. Suffolk Open Studios, taking place in June, gives visitors a chance to glimpse behind the scenes in the artist’s studio. It’s an excellent opportunity to discover new talent, buy unique items and explore this lovely county.
