Newfoundland: Sainsbury Centre, Norwich Newfoundland is an exhibition of work by contemporary jeweller Romilly Saumarez Smith and artist Verdi Yahooda from December 5th 2015 to April 10th 2016 at the Sainsbury Centre, Norwich. Each of the 70+ pieces are unique and have at their core Roman, Anglo-Saxon or Mediaeval metalwork, dropped or discarded hundreds of years ago. In 2011, Romilly became fascinated by the finds of metal detectorists who scour the countryside in search of lost treasure. She quickly recognised the inherent beauty of the buttons, pins, thimbles and metal buckles. A small belt buckle becomes a delicate ring; what had been a metal garment pin turns into an elegant brooch. Combined with tiny pearls, gold and diamonds the antique is embedded, fused, sewn and riveted to the new to create tiny fanciful landscapes. Apart from a ring in the Victoria and Albert Museum, this is the first time her jewellery will be seen in a major public museum in this country. As part of the Newfoundland exhibition, photographer Verdi Yahooda has made some exceptional photographic prints of the original metal finds.

Artist Profile: Mik Richardson It's hard to imagine two careers as different as the RAF and art. But somehow mural and airbrush artist Mik Richardson has found success in both. 'I'd always loved art at school but I ended up joining the RAF as it seemed a more viable career path,' says Mik. Little did Mik know then that art would soon come to feature within his RAF career. 'My colleagues all knew I could draw so one day they asked me to create a picture to give as a gift to a nation that was hosting us,' says Mik. 'So I taught myself to airbrush and created a picture of a Phantom to give them.' From there, Mik was asked to design t-shirts for the servicemen and started designing nose art for the RAF's planes.

Since then, Mik's career has spiralled. His murals can now be seen in schools across the region, visitor centres, libraries, skate parks, building societies and even on the side of skips! In 2013 he was invited to take part in the GoGoGorillas project in Norwich and painted five of the gorillas themselves, including the controversial Freddie Mercury gorilla. This year Mik was responsible for three dragons on the hugely successful GoGoDragons trail in the city. In 2016, visitors to Ipswich will be able to see two of Mik's pigs on their pig trail including the pig that is launching the event called Tally Ho Trotters. In total, Mik's paintings have raised a staggering ÂŁ125,000 for charity.

In 2006 Mik's service career finally came to an end just as the gates of RAF Coltishall closed for good. On the hunt for aircraft engineering work, Mik received a call that would ultimately change his career path.

'I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to make a career out of doing something I love while at the same time raising money for fantastic causes,' says Mik.

'A friend who was head teacher of a Norfolk school called me up and asked whether I'd consider doing a mural in the school with the children,' says Mik. 'I went into the school and tutored the children and we all worked together on the project. It went so well they asked me to do seven more. As other heads heard about my work, they started calling me up too.'

Aside from his mural and sculpture work, Mik also hosts excellent graffiti birthday parties for children aged 7 and above. Children can produce a personalised graffiti style design on a t-shirt. 'The parties work fantastically,' says Mik. 'I don't use any solvents or hazardous materials so it's completely safe for the kids.'

Like most children, my son Archie loves to decorate biscuits so the Cookie Club held at Let's Bake! in Bungay sounded perfect. With half hour sessions running between 4.30 and 6pm every Friday, Archie could decorate a homemade shortbread cookie with icing, sprinkles and glitter - excellent! The lovely Anna McCarter that owns the shop couldn't have been more welcoming and there was even a free filter coffee for weary mums or dads! Using stencils and free hand, Archie decorated his cookie and loved choosing the colours and adding that all

Waveney Reflections This beautiful book, published by the Harleston & Waveney Art Trail Collective, paints a portrait of the River Waveney from Brockdish to Bungay. It is a celebration of the work of 25 artists who live near the river, each one nourished by its gentle flowing water to produce something unique. Christmas with a difference! Eastern Angles theatre company are back at the Sir John Mills Theatre in Ipswich and the Seckford Theatre in Woodbridge with Holy Mackerel, another off-the-wall Christmas production taking its unlikely inspiration from the Newlyn fish riots. Artistic Director Ivan Cutting explains; 'It may sound like an unusual theme for a comedy Christmas show but we have a long tradition of taking historical events and looking at them from a surreal, sideways angle – the result is something akin to the popular ‘Horrible Histories’ books – an anarchic and hopefully very funny version of events with added music and jokes. This year we are working in collaboration with Shanty Theatre company who will give the production a unique Cornish twist. It reminds me of one of those fantastic old Ealing Comedies or Richard Bean’s One Man, Two Guvnors – a bit slapstick and full of farce…and a lot of fun!' This ‘wacky alternative to the traditional Christmas panto' includes quick-fire banter, catchy tunes and hysterical comedy performances.

'We have a wide range of adult costumes in stock including film characters, period costumes, Christmas costumes, evening dresses and ballgowns, outfits from around the world and clothing from every decade since from the 1920s to the 1990s,' says owner Adam. 'My mother loves music and dancing and she wanted me to do it,' he says. 'I played all sports and dancing was just something I did alongside them. I wouldn’t say I had a passion for it as a youngster as I preferred playing sports, but I had a talent for it and unlike some sports that ended at the end of a season, dancing never stopped. My passion for it came later in life.' So how did Brendan end up in the UK? 'I wanted to be the best and this was the place to come to be that,' says Brendan. 'A one way ticket and £1000 was my starting point and the rest is history. It’s weird to think of leaving everyone and everything in NZ at the age of 18 but I knew if I was to succeed I had to sacrifice a few things.

Home-grown Jazz Talent At just 22 years old, it seems Suffolk jazz singer Olivia Castle is on the cusp of big things. Her beautiful debut album Siren Song was recorded in just one day with Laurie Holloway MBE on piano. As musical director for the Parkinson Show and Strictly Come Dancing, Laurie has described Olivia as '…the best vocalist I've played for, for a long time. She is a wonderful singer. A class act.' Suffolk born and bred, Olivia has lived and studied in the county her whole life. 'I loved singing from a very early age and had singing lessons at school,' says Olivia. Olivia was runner-up in the BBC Radio 2 Chorister of the Year final, held at St Paul’s Cathedral in 2008, performing to a panel of judges which included Carrie Grant and Hayley Westenra, and an audience of 1500 in addition to the radio listeners. During this period Olivia also featured as a guest on two BBC Radio Suffolk shows. As part of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain she was privileged to perform at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall with greats like Daniel Barenboim and Gustavo Dudamel for two consecutive years, in 2011 and 2012. In 2011 she was also awarded the Diploma in Musical Theatre (dipGSA) from the Guildford School of Acting and completed her Grade 8 Singing, achieving a high distinction.

Over the past few years she has been fortunate to perform with the legendary Laurie Holloway and his trio, and the Malcolm Edmonstone trio through the Montgomery Holloway Trust, a summer school which trains up-and-coming young Jazz musicians. She also performs regularly with the celebrated composer Denis King, whom Olivia met whilst performing as Dorothy in a production of ‘Wizard of Oz’, where Denis was the musical director. This production was particularly special to her and it is for this reason that the Judy Garland classic ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ features on the album. Christmas at Norwich Cathedral This festive season, Norwich Cathedral has a wealth of services, alongside its spectacular programme of music. The Christingle Service on December 12th at 3.30pm is perfect for the whole family and promises plenty of oranges and candles!

On December 20th, you can enjoy a traditional service of lessons and carols celebrating the Christmas story at 6pm.
