Visual Arts News Christine McKechnie Exhibition The John Russell Gallery's first exhibition of the year shows the recent watercolour collages of highly-acclaimed artist Christine McKechnie. Her work is based on drawing, mostly outside in front of the subject. She then enters the stillness and quiet of her Suffolk cottage studio where the drawings are expanded, emphasising form and composition, providing overlapping shapes, and using expressive colour. This intricate process is unique, her collages (cut out paper painted watercolours), are produced with detail and finesse. Christine's work is on display from February 8th to March 5th.

Moosey Art: Carl Cashman From February 4th-20th Moosey Art in Bridewell Alley, Norwich plays host to a solo exhibition by Carl Cashman. The 'Sun Shines Out Of My Arts' is made up of a new selection of work in two parts - one is a series of pieces on reclaimed or found materials and the other half is playing with iconic symbols of logos using the idea of illusion and tricking the eye. Based out of Devon, Carl works primarily on wood panels, though he recently expanded his practice to include works on found surfaces such as old paintings and baseball bats. Using UV reactive paints at times to create an added dimensional effect, his abstract geometric imagery often produces the illusion of emitting actual light and movement.

Poetic Landscape: The Etchings of Samuel Palmer Poetic Landscape, from Feb 27th - June 5th examines the complete collection of etched works by the visionary and innovative printmaker Samuel Palmer. Samuel Palmer (1805-1881) was a contemporary of William Blake best known for his paintings and etchings that exemplify the English landscape and rural idyll. Palmer met Blake (1757-1827) in 1824 and the ageing artist had a profound influence on his future work. Both are

our feelings and interpretations of our favourite spaces. Consequently he is influenced and indeed beguiled by the theory of nonlinear dynamics (also known as Chaos Theory) and its grip on his attempts at decoding the features and visual cues of his environment. His ongoing current series of limited editions “The Line, Chaos & Ink” is the third series inspired by Chaos Theory – the first of which he began in 1989. After a year of highly acclaimed exhibitions in 2015, Anteros Arts Foundation is delighted to be representing Mark’s work in Norwich.

The exhibition, at Gainsborough House, includes a replica of William Blake’s Printing Press and will coincide with a season of events for adults and families at Gainsborough’s House’s Print Workshop. The workshop will hold demonstrations as well as bespoke events such as Print Like Palmer on April 5th (recommended for children aged 3-12 accompanied by an adult).

Art Bridges the Gap Theronda Hoffman, local Suffolk artist, organised the third ‘Art Bridges the Gap’ exhibition at Kesgrave Arts in December 2015 and raised a fantastic £1332 for Age UK Suffolk. The exhibition featured a variety of work by Theronda, some of her students and other artists from Suffolk. A Warehouse Sale of Theronda’s work over the years also took place, half of the proceeds going to Age UK Suffolk. Theronda Hoffman said 'I have been supporting Age UK Suffolk for over three years as they provide so many valuable services for older people in Suffolk,' says Theronda. February 2016 | 9

Artist Profile: Vanessa Pooley Even as a small child, bronze sculptor Vanessa Pooley was intrigued by the female body.
says. 'To me it was a private thing and I was scared of the exposure and the criticism that could follow.'
'In primary school, I drew page after page of female figures. I even remember the teacher banning me from drawing until I did some proper work!' she laughs.
Even at Norwich Art College and her postgraduate course at City and Guilds of London Art School, Vanessa preferred to keep her work private.
It was during a walk on the beach at Walberswick with her family that Vanessa discovered her love of sculpting. 'I was about 10 and dug some raw clay from the beach,' she recalls. 'Back home I used it to make sculpted female heads. The material wasn't brilliant but I was just desperate to make something. I'd cook them in the aga and paint them’. By the time Vanessa reached The Hewitt School 6th-form, she'd started making standing female figures too.
'The Head of Art, Mr Forward, was a great support,' says Vanessa. 'He invited me to attend his adult education ceramic classes which were fantastic.'
But in 1984, Vanessa bit the bullet and organised an exhibition for herself in Southwark Cathedral. 'I'd been getting an allowance from the Enterprise Allowance Scheme to set myself up in business as a sculptor and I thought I should show that I was taking it seriously,' says Vanessa. The exhibition was a watershed. 'It went really well and, for the first time, I sold my work which was a huge boost to my confidence,' says Vanessa. Since then Vanessa's work has been shown in galleries across the world in London, Milan, New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, San Diego, Zurich, Edinburgh, Aldeburgh. Sherborne and, of course, Norwich. Vanessa's sculptures are first made in clay before being dried out and fired. Once cast, all of the details of the surface of the ceramic sculpture are reproduced in bronze.
But although Vanessa's skills were developing, her confidence was not.
'I'm just developing a range of sculptures where figures can be added to the scene as a family grows,' says Vanessa. 'They make a perfect present for new parents or grandparents’.
'I found it really difficult to let people see my work,' she

Lorraine's work is inspired by the Norfolk coastline and the constant changes both natural and those brought about by human intervention. Using aerial viewpoints of the coastline has given her the opportunity to play with pattern and shapes made by tidal flow and erosion. Lorraine strives to capture that notion of constant change. 'As an artist there is something strangely compelling in the landscapes of West and North Norfolk,' says Lorraine. 'The empty, isolated panoramas of the Wash and of the North Norfolk coast are a short trip from my home and my paintings draw strongly on the sense of space, light and atmosphere that I find there’.
medium. It combines the wood-cuts of Rob Lansman and the freestyle carvings of John Williams. Each artist begins his exploration with a very similar chisel followed by many diagonal cuts. Both searching as they go for that exact resistance of movement and stability which a well seasoned timber should always reward and provide. Close cropped portraits are Rob’s choice of subject while John opts for the languid nature of the human figure itself. Rob further generates aesthetic flow and impact to his prints with colour while John works to exploit the grain as well as the hues of lighter and darker woods.

Collaborations abound with both new up-and-coming acts and established artists such as ‘New Day’ ft. Bobby Womack and the hit singles ‘Bloodstream’ and ‘Lay It All On Me’ with Ed Sheeran. As further special celebration on May 21st, the Phil presents an extra concert to its normal season - a performance of the monumental 8th Symphony by Mahler, ‘The Symphony of a Thousand’, for an audience of 2,000 at the Royal Norfolk Showground Arena, as part of the Norfolk & Norwich Festival. The ‘Symphony of a Thousand’ is so-called because it is scored for a vast orchestra, multiple choirs, organ, off-stage band and eight solo singers. Indeed it is conceived on such a large scale that the Royal Norfolk Showground Arena is the only venue big enough to stage it, the first time an event of this kind has been held there. In addition to the musicians and singers of the Norwich Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, the concert will also involve musicians from other local orchestras, notably the Academy of St Thomas, and singers from at least four other Norfolk choirs including Norfolk & Norwich Festival Chorus, Norwich Cathedral Choir, Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society, and Kings Lynn Festival Chorus.

But it’s culture’s economic benefits that are often underemphasised, particularly in this region. In 2015, Suffolk arts organisations contributed more than £20 million to the county’s economy, spending more than £4.7 million across 1,400 Suffolk businesses, whilst the 20 cultural organisations supported by Norfolk County Council provided 450 jobs and worked with over 1,000 volunteers.
