King's Lynn Festival: Alfred Cohen Exhibition The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich, in partnership with the King’s Lynn Festival, is proud to present an exhibition of works by painter Alfred Cohen (1920-2001). Born in America, Cohen served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, developing a particular love of the aerial view which had a profound impact on his later compositions. In 1978 he moved to Wighton, North Norfolk, where he converted a former schoolhouse into a studio, a print workshop and an art gallery. Cohen continued painting, drawing, etching and producing screenprints until his death in 2001. Vividly coloured, his oil paintings and prints capture the dramatic effects of light on land, sea and townscapes and are represented by major public collections in Britain and abroad. The exhibition explores the theme of light and water, strongly conveyed in Cohen’s work of the Thames, the channel coasts and the Norfolk area. The Sainsbury Centre has just acquired a group of eight paintings by Alfred Cohen which will be added to its permanent collection and celebrate the life and work of this great artist. The exhibition in the Fermoy Gallery at the King’s Lynn Arts Centre runs from July 18th-30th. Admission is free. www.kingslynnfestival.org.uk 8 |

To date, the festival has raised over £50,000 for various good causes; this year’s nominated charity is East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices. Art Trail in Bungay's Gardens Art lovers will flock to the lovely market town of Bungay on July 16th-17th for the Bungay Garden Art Trail, as part of the Bungay Festival. Black Dog Arts are once again promoting the arts and crafts in beautiful hidden gardens within the town of Bungay.There are eight gardens on the trail and maps will be available in each garden and under the Buttercross. Artist Profile: Eloise O’Hare Art is in Eloise O'Hare's blood. 'Both my parents are artists and my grandmother was a well known local painter too,' says Eloise. 'From a very early age, it was clear I was going to follow in their footsteps.’ Born in West Runton, Eloise grew up in Ireland but came back to Cromer regularly for holidays. 'Those holidays have provided the inspiration for my most recent paintings,' says Eloise. 'For me, it's about capturing childhood memories and depicting the beautiful landscape and buildings in North Norfolk.' Since her training at Great Yarmouth Art School and a subsequent honours degree in Bradford, Eloise has worked across a wide variety of artistic mediums.

By the following year, Eloise had become their best-selling artist. 'It was the first time I'd ever submitted landscape paintings to a gallery before so I was thrilled,' says Eloise. Since then, the relationship has continued. Last summer Eloise did a large painting of a packed Cromer beach and as soon as The Gallery Norfolk framed the picture and hung it in the window, they had three buyers straight away! 'I had to paint another one quickly as one of the people who wanted it was from Australia and wanted to take it home with him' says Eloise. This month - from July 16th - Eloise has a solo exhibition in the gallery.

'I've always picked things up, played with them and turned them into something else,' says Eloise. 'I like sculpture and even furniture-making.'

'I've submitted roughly 100 paintings of varying sizes and prices - of sights from Cromer all the way to Wells - with small ones starting from just £10,' says Eloise. 'They are all originals as I don't make prints so anyone who likes my work should pop along to see what's on offer.'

But a holiday to Cromer in 2014 led Eloise's career down a different path.

Readers may recognise Eloise's name as a prize-winner in the prestigious Paint Out Norwich competition.

'I was visiting my family in Northrepps when I popped to Cromer one afternoon,' says Eloise. 'I sat down on the beach and started to paint using dip ink pens and watercolours. I really enjoyed it and was so happy with the paintings I did that day that I decided to pop into a local gallery unannounced to see whether they might be interested in taking them.'

'Last year I won third prize in the competition which was a great honour,' says Eloise. 'I painted a picture of the chocolate shop in the Royal Arcade in the city centre. One of the judges remarked that my work was similar to the famous artist Duffy which was a great compliment. I see it more as a cross between Cotman and Quentin Blake - lively and colourful works that capture the essence of Norfolk.'

Art in Aldeburgh East Anglian Mini Print Exhibition

Aldeburgh has long been a haven of creativity, a place where artists gather both for inspiration and to showcase their work.

This summer is no exception as three exhibitions come to different venues in and around this lovely coastal town. • The first East Anglian Mini Print Exhibition is calling for artists this summer to take part in its exhibition in the town's Garage Gallery in September. • A collaboration of printmakers - 4 PRINTmakers - are showcasing their work at The Quay Gallery, Snape Maltings in July. • The prestigious Suffolk Craft Society are holding their summer exhibition at the Peter Pears Gallery on Aldeburgh's High Street from July to August

A Call to Printmakers Fine art printmakers from across the region have until August 12th to submit up to three pieces of work for the first East Anglia Mini Print Exhibition taking place in Aldeburgh in September. Up to 350 mini prints will be selected with any recognisable print making technique welcomed including mono print and digital photography. The finished print must be contained within a 10cm-10cm square or a 12.5cm x 7.5cm rectangle (landscape or portrait). With so many styles, techniques, subject matter and messages, Mini Print exhibitions continue to grow in popularity and collectors travel across Europe to find something to complement and enhance their many exciting and diverse collections. Organised by Lesley Jackson of Red Dot Art Consultancy, it is hoped that upward of 500 prints will be selected for exhibiting next year with a goal of 1000 prints by 2020. 12 |

Quality in Print 4 PRINTmakers is a group of East Anglian women artists who have come together to share their work and practice. Each comes from a different artistic background; ceramics, graphics, textiles, painting and community arts, but they have found common ground in printmaking. Having met at Gainsborough House Print Workshop in Sudbury they use a range of techniques including etching , linocut, lithography, screen printing and collage. It is specifically the variety within the group, contrasting and yet in no way conflicting, that inspired them to join forces and begin exhibiting togetherthat, and the fact that they like to meet up for tea and cake! They have two upcoming exhibitions - one at The Quay Gallery, Snape Maltings from July 15th-21st, followed by an exhibition at The Garage Gallery, Aldeburgh from August 25th-31st.

Coffee & aChat Next month, popular vocalist Joe Ringer takes to the stage at the Norwich Theatre Royal, with his big band sound as he presents Swingin' With Bublé. The Norwich-based singer has a large local following for his jazz and swing arrangements and is promising an evening to remember with an orchestra, choir and guest soloists joining him on stage. 'For our show at the Theatre Royal there will be a massive band, the sort of band you don’t usually see,' says Joe. 'We will have a 28-piece orchestra and everything is especially arranged for this line-up. We have the standard big band

which is 18 musicians and, on top of that, we've added a seven-piece string section plus percussion. Plus we’ve got a 40-piece choir singing with us and some dancers, so a bit of everything – a visual and aural feast for everyone.' Joe has been working on the arrangements himself, alongside arranger Mike West. 'The songs are beautifully written and to be able to do the true arrangements is brilliant,' says Joe. 'The lyrics are beautiful, which I feel a lot of the time today you don’t get in modern songs. They are so clever you can get really lost in the story when you are singing them and listening to them too. I like singing pop music like anyone else, but there is something about these well-crafted songs from Cole Porter and Irving Berlin that I really love. They are a pleasure to sing and they suit my voice.' On the programme on August 9th will be numbers from Michael Bublé with songs ranging from Cry Me A River and Haven’t Met You Yet, to Home and Feeling Good, as well as some of the all-time greats from Frank Sinatra, the Rat Pack and Ray Charles.

Norwich singer Joe Ringer has been taking the UK by storm. Now the big band singer is returning to his home city to celebrate swing music past and present. Here Judy Foster, Communications Officer at Norwich Theatre Royal, catches up with Joe ahead of his August show.

Coﬀee & a Chat 'I grew up with the big band sound,' says Joe. 'My mum was a massive fan of Sinatra and the Rat Pack and Nat King Cole, so that was always playing throughout the house, so I became that kind of singer. I’ve always had a passion for it and about ten years ago when Bublé came in, Jamie Cullum and the Robbie Williams swing album, it re-ignited that thing. It was great and they are just a pleasure to sing.' The former Costessey High School pupil joined the Norfolk Youth Music Theatre at the age of 16. His first gig was at the Maid's Head Hotel and led on to appearances with the Jonathan Wyatt Big Band, regular shows at The Norwich Playhouse and other regional venues, as well as work on the corporate event circuit at weddings and shows. 'Norfolk Youth Music Theatre gave me good diction and a good vocal grounding,' says Joe. 'A lot of people have beautiful voices, but you have to be able to perform too. You have to be likeable to the crowd. You have to endear

yourself to the audience in the first five minutes. I can cover most things. I do a lot of soul stuff, a lot of rock, swing, but jazz is probably my main thing. It is three years since I turned professional. We started off with nothing which was quite scary – it’s been building – the first year we had 20 events, the next 40 and last year 60, and this year we are on for 100 - so it just keeps growing.' Appearing alongside Joe is Claire Martin, one of the UK's top jazz vocalists and presenter on Radio 3 and Frankie's Boys a fantastic Four Seasons tribute band. A Festival of Food at Sandringham

The Sandringham Food & Drink festival on August 6th-7th promises to be an inspirational event for specialist food and drink enthusiasts.The event will have a summer festival feel about it, with jazz and country bands. The Festival’s ‘Chefs on Stage’ plan to give show visitors a series of entertaining and instructive live demonstrations. An impressive line up of national and regional star chefs bring an intriguing selection of international food backgrounds and influences. Saturday sees the charismatic Theo Randall, Daniel Clifford and Holly Bell take centre stage, on Sunday John Torode, Lisa Faulkner and Holly Bell star, Mark Lloyd comperes in the main food theatre.
