WELCOME TO

THE FISHER THEATRE New look, new feel and new Spring 2016 programme. This is my first artistic programme here at The Fisher Theatre and I’m very excited to announce, host and share this diverse and creative programme with you all. My vision for the theatre is to engage, encourage, support and present a variety of live theatre experiences, live streamings and cinema. This year we see the inclusion of an educational and outreach programme that works alongside the artistic programme. These classes are here for you all to join, enjoy, participate and create, which will keep you fit and enhance your social life. This year is the Fisher Theatre’s 10th Anniversary and we will be celebrating all year long, so watch this space. I hope you enjoy the programme and shows coming up as much as I did scouting them, and, as always, if there’s anything about the theatre that you’d like to discuss just let me know. Very best wishes for the New Year and I look forward to welcoming you at The Fisher.

Open Mic Night

National Theatre Live – Jane Eyre Thursday 7th January, 7.30pm • £12, Box 1 (4 seats) £48, Box 2 (6 seats) £72 Almost 170 years on, Charlotte Brontë’s story of the trailblazing Jane is as inspiring as ever. This bold and dynamic production uncovers one woman’s fight for freedom and fulfilment on her own terms. From her beginnings as a destitute orphan, Jane Eyre’s spirited heroine faces life’s obstacles head-on, surviving poverty, injustice and the discovery of bitter betrayal before taking the ultimate decision to follow her heart. This acclaimed re-imagining of Brontë's masterpiece was first staged by Bristol Old Vic last year, when the story was performed over two evenings. Director Sally Cookson now brings her celebrated production to the National, presented as a single, exhilarating performance.

JANUARY Crazy Glue Friday 15th January, 7.30pm • £12, £10 (concessions), £8 (groups 10+), Box 1 (4 seats) £48, Box 2 (6 seats) £72 They have a car in the garage, a chicken in the pot and a child on the way. But is that enough to make true love stick? Crazy Glue follows the comedic roller coaster of a couple’s romance as they move from the blossoming of first love through to the thornier terrain of married life. Inspired by the physical comedy of Buster Keaton and the madcap absurdity of Looney Tunes, Single Shoe Productions create a fusion of silent film nostalgia and cartoon antics. The captivating cast of two blend vocal sound effects, quirky humour and an evocative 1930’s soundtrack to reveal the crazy, sticky, messy side of marriage.

The Met Live - Les Pecheurs de Perles Saturday 16th January, 5.55pm • £12, Box 1 (4 seats) £48, Box 2 (6 seats) £72 Bizet’s gorgeous opera of lust and longing set in the Far East returns to the Met stage for the first time in 100 years. Soprano Diana Damrau stars as Leïla, the beautiful Hindu priestess pursued by rival pearl divers competing for her hand. Her suitors are tenor Matthew Polenzani and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien, who sing the lilting duet “Au fond du temple saint,” which opera fans know and adore. Director Penny Woolcock explores the timeless themes of pure love, betrayal, and vengeance in a production that vividly creates an undersea world on the stage of the Met. Conductor Gianandrea Noseda brings his romantic flair to the lush score from the composer of Carmen.

Fisher Theatre Film – Far From the Madding Crowd (12A) Monday 18th January, 7.30pm, £5 In Victorian England, the independent and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak, a sheep farmer; Frank Troy, a reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood, a prosperous and mature bachelor.

Nationally recognised conservationist, Ian Carstairs from Harleston, shares with us a glimpse into the extraordinary world of his “little battle” for wildlife and the countryside, in which ordinary people have achieved amazing results for the environment. For more than 30 years, Ian has been centrally involved, both professionally and voluntarily, in the challenge to look after our natural, built and cultural heritage. Ranging across wildlife, archaeology, palaeo environment and landscape, his experiences show that you don’t have to be a specialist to make a real difference, providing you maintain a sense of humour, don’t take yourself too seriously and most importantly NEVER TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER. Ian has received a number of honours, including for his contribution to the conservation of rivers. And recently he was awarded an unprecedented second Golden Scale, the ‘mark’ of the enigmatic Golden Scale Club, for life-time achievement. An evening presented in support of the River Waveney Trust. It will also celebrate the Swift Action project for Harleston and the Waveney Valley.

The most entertaining guy in show business, Paul Daniels is bringing a very special evening your way. For one night only, Paul will be offering ‘An Evening With’ where showbiz secrets, life stories and more will be shared with the audience in an intimate setting along with an audience Q&A. One half of the evening will consist of Paul sharing his experiences whilst the other half will also include his wife and on stage partner, ‘The Lovely Debbie McGee’. Debbie McGee is not only a celebrity in her own right, she is a highly successful dancer, performer, radio DJ and author. Having fled Iran during the revolution, Debbie McGee will share stories of her showbiz career as well as what it's like being married to one of the most successful magicians of all time. The evening boasts laughs, surprises and of course a bit of magic and is partnered with Paul and Debbie’s highly successful ‘Intimate’ magic show. Tickets to both shows can be bought separately or together at a discounted rate. This is a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with two household names, an evening not to be missed!

There is always a chance!

Roger Walsh: The Gambia – our birds are their birds Thursday 18th February, 7.30pm • £6, £4 (members)

Peter (Levi Miller) is a mischievous 12-year-old boy with an irrepressible rebellious streak, but in the bleak London orphanage where he has lived his whole life those qualities do not exactly fly. Then one incredible night, Peter is whisked away from the orphanage and spirited off to a fantastical world of pirates, warriors and fairies called Neverland. There, he finds amazing adventures and fights life-or-death battles while trying to uncover the secret of his mother, who left him at the orphanage so long ago, and his rightful place in this magical land. Teamed with the warrior Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara) and a new friend named James Hook (Garrett Hedlund), Peter must defeat the ruthless pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman) to save Neverland and discover his true destiny—to become the hero who will forever be known as Peter Pan.

Roger shares with us the highlights, challenges and successes of a ground-breaking bird study project based at Kartong Bird Observatory on the southern border of The Gambia and Senegal. Alongside African birds, many migrants from Britain and Europe have been ringed with the aim of increasing knowledge of migration patterns and site fidelity through West Africa and beyond. An important aspect of the work is getting the locals to support the vision of habitat management – a difficult task when life relies on wood fires to cook meals every day and gardens to grow produce. However, through teaching in the local school, training students in conservation, supporting vulnerable and disabled pupils in the village and through an extensive medical programme much support has been gained.

Hannelore Smith is a multi-disciplinary artist based in North Norfolk; she produces abstract works in 3D, paper and textiles that suggest mapping, charting and

leading up to his sixty-fourth birthday on September 30th. Each painting was done in oils direct from the subject. They are each 8 inches square and mostly local landscapes – with still lives set up in the studio on bad weather days. Some of the pictures were already sold in advance when people reserved a particular date. Others sold as soon as the latest day’s picture was posted onto social media sites. The Exhibition “Two to the Power of Six” is the first and only time that all sixty four pictures will be shown in public in the same place at the same time. Most of the sold pictures are being loaned back by their owners but in a couple of instances, high quality photographic reproductions will be shown in their place.

plotting. Themes explored include aerial landscapes; reconnaissance maps, architectural blueprints, and scientific data. “Selection of materials and process are integral to my work," says Hannelore. "My background training in textiles leads me to explore drawing through familiar materials and techniques; Favouring a darning needle over a pencil and playing with the possibilities of utilising fabrics as resists, embossing plates and mark making tools. The use of a volatile naked flame, fire soot, engine oil and cement as a medium allow for interplay between the intentional and accidental mark.”

A good number of the pictures are still for sale during the exhibition.

They will be working on and performing The Musicians, by Patrick Marber. They perform four home performances at the Fisher in March, before performing at our local Partner Theatre, the Norwich Playhouse in their youth festival in April and at each stage we are judged and given feedback by National Theatre Directors. If we do really well and get down to the last 12 youth companies - out of 500 - we get to perform at the National Theatre with stage, lighting and costume produced by them. FYTG is also proud to be taking its production to a European Youth Festival in Ghent, Belgium. The Musicians is about a school orchestra who travel to Moscow to perform in a youth festival. On the night of the concert their instruments get impounded at the airport and they believe the only answer is to cancel. But Alex, the young Russian cleaner who has been listening to their plight comes up with a fabulous idea. This is a comedy, about working together against the odds and thinking creatively. Patrick Marber is well known for his plays, TV series and films. Currently he has a new play that opened at the National Theatre in October called Three Days in the Country.

MARCH Royal Opera House Live – Boris Godunov Monday 21st March, 7.15pm • £12, Box 1 (4seats) £48, Box 2 (6 seats) £72 Richard Jones and Antonio Pappano bring their new production of Musorgsky’s historical masterpiece, here seen in its compact 1869 first version. The originality of the composer’s vision of Pushkin’s play about Tsar Boris Godunov was too much for the management of the Imperial Theatres, who demanded changes before its premiere in 1874. Many commentators prefer the integrity of the original, which makes few concessions to operatic conventions. Opolais sings the title role of the country girl who transforms herself into a Parisian temptress, while Kaufmann is the dashing student who desperately woos her. Director Richard Eyre places the action in occupied France in a film noir setting. Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi leads the stirring score.

Academy Award nominee Ian McKellen takes on the iconic role of Detective Sherlock Holmes. In 1947 the world famous sleuth has retired to a remote Sussex farmhouse, living in relative anonymity with only his housekeeper Mrs Munro and her young son Roger for company. Cantankerous, demanding and frustrated with the misrepresentation of him in Watson’s best-selling novels, he diverts his attention to an unsolved case. As the mystery deepens, Sherlock tries desperately to recall the events of 30 years ago that led to his retirement. Starring Academy Award nominee Laura Linney (The Savages), Frances de la Tour (Harry Potter) and newcomer Milo Parker, Mr Holmes is adapted from Mitch Cullin’s novel A Slight Trick of the Mind and is directed by Academy Award winner Bill Condon.

The Car Man is loosely based on Bizet’s popular opera and has one of the most thrilling and instantly recognisable scores in New Adventures’ repertoire. The familiar 19th century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a greasy garage-diner in 1960s America where the dreams and passions of a small town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome stranger. Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge. Featuring Lez Brotherston’s epic design and Matthew Bourne’s vivid storytelling with music by Terry Davies and Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite (after Bizet’s Carmen), The Car Man is another spectacular production from the UK’s most popular

Tenor Matthew Polenzani is Devereux, and mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien complete the principal quartet in the bel canto masterpiece, conducted by Donizetti specialist Maurizio Benini. Hailed as a “masterpiece” by the Chicago Sun-Times, Gustavo Ramírez Sansano’s CARMEN is a Picasso-inspired, contemporary take on Bizet’s classic opera about a passionate gypsy. Riveting from start to finish, the physically charged and sensual choreography fuses contemporary dance with nods to the Spanish paso doble and flamenco.

HIRE

The largest room within the Theatre offers a maximum seating capacity of 160 and an impressive 240 when all guests/delegates are standing with minimal seating on offer. Unusual for an auditorium are the windows in the roof that flood the space with natural light. These can be blacked out if not required. Added to which are theatre lights that are able to create added atmosphere to enhance any event from the formality of a conference to an evening party. The floor consists of 60 individual floor panels that can be raised or lowered, to six different heights, allowing you to choose the size of the main stage, seated area, centre stage or even a catwalk. The technical side of the auditorium is controlled from a box above the auditorium at the back, accessed via the gallery. For more information, call us on 01986 897130
