The summer season has concluded on a high and there is a positive vibe and much enthusiasm as we enter the autumn season with a rich mix of music, theatre productions, live cinema, children’s entertainment and of course the ever popular Christmas pantomime. Niamh has taken on the position of Programme and Events Manager after initially joining as Marketing & FOH Manager, and is hard at work researching and planning for the upcoming spring season, hoping to strengthen the ethos of Arts, Community, Education and Heritage as we move forward. Niamh is passionate about achieving a programme and facilities that are accessible to all, with diversity and inclusively being a huge focus within her degree. Sonya has brought a breath of experience both from a bar and catering perspective, but also from previous work in the community and in education. She has stepped into the role of Operations and Front of House Manager and plans are underway to develop all areas to ensure that the Fisher is accessed by the community for the purpose in which it was regenerated. Both Niamh and Sonya are locals and passionate about what the Fisher Theatre can bring to Bungay and beyond. With the ongoing support of the Fisher’s Board of Trustee and army of loyal volunteers, the Fisher, as a charity organisation is looking to go from strength to strength.

One of the most respected textile-based artists of her generation with work held in the V&A and internationally, Jo Budd has lived and worked in the Waveney Valley for 25 years, the last 21 of them from her house and studio in Bungay, overlooking the Earsham water-meadows. These views have inspired her to a new way of working, one involving fabric and plant-based glue in a rapid collage technique. This now gives her “the speed and spontaneity to sketch a fleeting moment, a day or a memory triggered by the changing light, seasons and colours of this very special part of the world.”
NOTE – The Gallery can be subject to closures for private hire events. If you are travelling any distance it is advisable to phone the Box Office before your visit on 01986 897130 between 10am and 3pm Monday – Saturday.

Conversations in Art Jilly Szaybo (1945 – 2022) Memorial Exhibition
The Illustrators Eye Kerry Timewell, Polly Dunbar & Marie Van Berkel
The painter Jilly Szaybo, who died in May 2022, had been living and working in Bungay since 2016, and at Ditchingham since 2005. The landscape of the Waveney Valley and the gardens she loved here have been her constant theme and inspiration and she has had several exhibitions at the Fisher over the years, the first in 2007, the most recent a shared show with Dom Theobald and Doug Kemp in March 2020. This memorial show will be a shared one also, with work by the many artist friends she has made over the years and with whom she always maintained a constant dialogue and shared vision of the nature and integrity of the painted world. Jilly was the first painter of Colour to study at the Slade School of Art in the early 60s and sales from this show will launch a new initiative to establish a fund to enable a young artist of colour to study there in years to come.
East Anglia is becoming something of an epicentre for illustrators, illustrative artists and authors. Bungay itself has hosted numbers of events like ‘Bewitched’ 2019, an exhibition of Children’s Book Art and ‘The Dog Eared Festival’ 2022, with talks and demonstrations about Children’s Books illustrations. Polly Dunbar, Kerry Timewell and Marie Van Berkel are all illustrative artists in their own right, using printmaking and paintings to create original dreamscape scenes. This exhibition is wonderfully wide ranging and highly enjoyable, full of the rich imagination and visual wit of these highly distinguished artists.
