WELCOME After a brief lull in the summer we are quickly back up to full speed! September 1st sees our first Blues Festival, with great acts all day culminating with headliners Nine Below Zero. The Blues continue into autumn with gigs from Georgie Fame, The Blues Band and Andy Fairweather Low. Our classical season kicks off with the National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company performing Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado. There are concerts from guitarist Milos, pianist Nicholas McCarthy, the Brodsky Quartet with recent BBC Young Musician of the Year Laura van der Heijden, and a welcome return by the Academy of Ancient Music, this time with superstar violinist Viktoria Mullova. Keep an eye out for our dedicated classical music brochure for much more information.
Comedians Jack Dee, Ed Byrne and Rob Beckett may have sold out but there are still tickets available for Andy Parsons, John Robins, Sindhu Vee and Paul Zerdin’s Puppet Party. There’s more humour from Radio 4 favourites Alistair McGowan, the Reverend Richard Coles and their guests in Wireless Wise. There are also evenings of conversation with Michael Morpurgo, Neil Oliver, Alan Johnson, Jay Rayner and Shaun Ryder. We’re looking forward to sets from Justin Hayward, The Selecter and Hugh Cornwell and, as ever, there is a strong folk programme and a healthy smattering of jazz and world music. Please dive into this brochure and discover the delights in store and we look forward to welcoming you to The Apex this autumn. NICK WELLS APEX PROGRAMMER

One of the most enduringly popular of Gilbert and Sullivan’s great comic creations. Frederic appears doomed to serve the pirates for another 63 years. Can he and his truelove Mabel find their happy ever after? Jam-packed with sentimental, swashbuckling pirates, a completely dotty Major General and a bumbling bunch of policemen, what could possibly go right?
Set in the fictional Japanese town of Titipu, Gilbert’s farcical plot satirises British society, customs and pretensions. In the topsy turvy world, Nanki-Poo attempts to escape from the formidable Katisha into the arms of his love, Yum-Yum. Sullivan’s popular musical numbers include ‘Three Little Maids’, ‘Tit Willow’ and ‘A Wandr’ing Minstrel’.
