WELCOME Thank you for picking up this copy of The Apex brochure. We’ve teamed up with Falcon Publications (publishers of the lovely ARTSeast magazine) to produce this full programme of our spring events. This is still a new design for us and we’re still playing with it, so please do let us know what you think. We’ve got a bumper programme running from January to April, with a few familiar faces and some wonderful and extraordinary (or perhaps extraterrestrial) additions... notably the moon... more on that later! So, we are delighted to welcome back Gretchen Peters, Academy of Ancient Music, Seth Lakeman, Fisherman’s Friends, Midge Ure and Ramin Karimloo to name but a few. And overjoyed to see Francis Rossi, Tom Paxton, John Illsley, Judy Collins, Heather Small, Brand New Heavies, Bokanté, Brian McFadden and the moon making their first visits to The Apex! There is a real treat in store for jazz fans with the return of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, but why have one brilliant young big band when you can have three?! Yes, NYJO will be joined by their Dutch and German counterparts for an evening of exceptional music-making from the leading lights of Europe’s next generation of jazz musicians.
And while I am speaking about jazz, Pete Long’s Echoes of Ellington Big Band make a very welcome return to The Apex for a very special gig – a tribute to Gustav Holst and Duke Ellington. 2018 marked the centenary of the first performance of Holst’s much loved The Planets, and Pete Long was inspired to re-score the work in a way that Duke Ellington might have done and it’s been getting some great reviews. The gig will also feature the world premiere of a new piece of music – Luna, The Changer Of Mood – composed because the gig will take place in the shadow of an extraordinary installation – Museum of The Moon. In February The Apex really will have the moon inside the auditorium – for more details please see page 34. Although I have spoken at length about jazz (and moons) there is so much to enjoy this season, so please dive in to the brochure, check out the website and we look forward to welcoming you to The Apex.
