Visual Arts News Celebrating Cambridge A new exhibition ‘Cambridge Envisaged’ runs at the Michaelhouse Centre, Cambridge from November 7th-19th. Featuring stunning works by Peter Corr, Paul Janssens and Caroline Forward, this exhibition showcases diverse perspectives on Cambridge, its architecture, history and its street life. Peter Corr says about his series of richly textured and glazed abstract paintings: 'I wanted to reflect something of the spirit of thinking,

order, imagination, reason and invention that permeates the fabric of this special city.' Paul Janssen’s multi-layered paintings capture the movement that is ever present in the city and market, and portray a sense of authenticity, change and history through his use of wood, old maps, postcards, and found materials from the market to build up the vibrant complexity of his paintings. Caroline Forward’s oil paintings explore the interplay of stained glass colour and light with stonework and architecture, and the harmony, solidity and stillness of geometric structure and small architectural motifs. Admission is free and all art is available for sale.
Cobbold and Judd Fine Art are delighted to announce a retrospective exhibition of the work of Patrick George at The Minories Ballroom in Colchester from November 26thDecember 3rd. There is no doubt that Patrick George was one of the very great painters of the last 50 years, and he was recognised as such by his fellow artists. He is best known for the magical series of landscapes of Suffolk which he painted after he moved there in 1961. These are lyrical paintings of a rare talent, working in the footsteps of Constable and Gainsborough. As he grew older he produced some of his best work, shimmering paintings of a flickering radiance, authority and intensity, every slight touch painted with great care. There are magnificent examples of these in the exhibition, as well as three of his penetrating and perceptive portraits.

Following Inspirations: Rebecca Douglass Whatley This extensive solo exhibition will fill the Apex Gallery, Bury St. Edmunds from November 29th until January 8th 2017. It is an overview of 50 years of creativity, in all sorts of media. Growing up in rural Virginia, Rebecca was inspired by the woods and fields. Frequent visits to the museums and galleries in Washington DC stimulated an interest in many forms of art and artists, as well as ethnographic arts and crafts. Those interests have continued, and, as a small holder and nature enthusiast in Norfolk, her work reflects the woods, land and animals she has worked with. There will be large abstract, and naturalistic, landscape paintings, portraits, which are often telling stories, weavings, also telling stories, though some are simple colour symphonies. There are sculptures in clay, bronze, and needle felted wool from her farm. The prints and pyrography celebrate local places, and fens and woodland. Much of the artwork will be for sale. All are welcome to a "meet the artist" session from 2pm- 7pm on December 3rd. www.theapex.co.uk/art-gallery

These will include lino cuts and prints made during the 1930s, landscapes of Brancaster and the North Norfolk Coast and sketches he made whilst training in remote parts of Britain: Northumberland, Salisbury Plain, Yorkshire Moors and the Brecon Beacons. In Celebration of Wood The new exhibition, Out of the Wood, at King’s Lynn’s GroundWork Gallery celebrates trees, forests and the art of wood. It takes the visitor on a historical and cultural journey, introduced by a piece of petrified oak from the Jurasssic period, some 140 million years old. This varied show includes the work of more than ten artists who are inspired by the beauty and usefulness of wood and trees. The Woodland Trust is celebrating the 800 year anniversary of the original forest charter which accompanied Magna Carta, with the year 2017 dedicated to trees. GroundWork Gallery has signed up to be a Charter Champion for King’s Lynn, to encourage a greater understanding of the role of trees in the past and future. Out of the Wood - featuring photography, sculpture, painting, prints, wood cuts, engravings and woodturning - runs from November 4th to December 17th.

Artist Profile: Stephen Mole Norfolk is a place of beauty. And nowhere more so is this apparent than in the stunning landscape photography of Norfolk Broads-based photographer Stephen Mole. Just ten years ago Stephen only took photos on holidays and days out. But after taking redundancy from his job in the civil service, he had more time for photography.
'My friend had also been made redundant at the same time,' says Stephen. 'We both decided to buy a nice camera and started taking weekly walks to take photos together.' Bitten by the photography bug, Stephen joined photo-sharing website Flickr. 'I was gobsmacked by how good some people's photos were and it really inspired me to take the best photos I could,' says Stephen. Inspired, Stephen joined a local photography group and was offered the chance to exhibit his photos in a group exhibition at the Castle Mall Shopping Centre in Norwich. 'I was thrilled when I sold my first photo,' says Stephen. 'It was a brilliant feeling.' Since then Stephen's photography has grown from strength to strength. He has held regular exhibitions at
Blickling Hall and his work can be seen on the walls of many Norfolk businesses including The Old Hall, Caister and Quayside Plaza in Great Yarmouth. He is also regularly commissioned to take photographs of holiday cottages for websites. From November 19th to 27th Stephen is holding an exhibition of his work at Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden near South Walsham.
'Fairhaven is a magical place and this is my third exhibition there,' says Stephen. 'I have framed photos for sale alongside mounted prints, postcards and calendars.’ Stephen feels blessed to live in such a beautiful part of the country. 'Norfolk is fabulous,' smiles Stephen. 'I love the sand, the beaches, the countryside‌the Broads. It's amazing to be able to work among such stunning countryside.' Stephen believes his love for the countryside is inspired by his father. 'My dad was a draughtsman who painted watercolours in his spare time,' says Stephen. 'My passion for the typical Norfolk landscape comes from his beautifully crafted paintings.'

Masters of Japanese Photography Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts: November 11th 2016 - March 19th 2017 Witnesses to a generation that grew up in the aftermath of the Second World War, their work addresses both their personal experiences and the evolution of their country. From Araki’s exuberant flowers to Hosoe’s lyrical portraits and Kawada’s unsettling skies, these fascinating images encapsulate the natural beauty and complex society of modern Japan. The stunning photographs produced by these artists and their contemporaries were not only immensely influential in their home country, but were also appreciated around the world as they documented the transformation of a post-war industrial society through a relatively modern medium.

Wayne Sleep to head Norwich panto cast
Dancer, choreographer, celebrity jungle competitor and stage favourite Wayne Sleep will head the cast of this year’s Norwich Theatre Royal pantomime. The acclaimed performer will play the villain Phineas P Stinkworthy in Jack and the Beanstalk which takes to the Norwich Theatre Royal stage from December 13th to January 15th. And it marks a return to the city’s panto spotlight for Wayne after he previously starred in Goldilocks and the Three Bears back in 1984, and Aladdin in 1987 opposite Bradley Walsh, who was starring in his very first pantomime . Three more top touring performers will also join Wayne and other previously announced stars Richard Gauntlett and Ben Langley in the festive spectacular. Taking on the title role of Jack Trottalot is David Burilin, who returns to the theatre’s pantomime cast after playing Prince Frederick in last year’s production of Snow White. Meanwhile the role of Joleyn Hiccup will be played by Mira Ormala. She will return to the panto cast fresh from a late summer appearance at the Theatre Royal for the National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company. Mira is no stranger to London’s theatre-land with appearances in the likes of Love Never Dies,
You Won’t Succeed On Broadway, Cinderella and The Great British Musicals. Jack and the Beanstalk will also mark the return of David Gant to the panto cast as the Sheriff, Phil Hiccup. He last appeared in Sleeping Beauty in 2011 in the city and is set to bring his stage presence and comic touch to the show.
COMPETITION WIN A FAMILY TICKET We have joined forces with Norwich Theatre Royal to give away a family ticket (two adults and two children) for Jack and the Beanstalk on Wednesday 14th December at 7.30pm. To be in with a chance of winning this prize, just answer the following question: What is the name of the first panto which Wayne Sleep starred in at Norwich Theatre Royal?
A – Snow White B – Goldilocks and the Three Bears C – Aladdin To be in with a chance of winning this great prize, please email your answer to info@artseast.co.uk. Closing date: November 25th. Tickets cannot be exchanged for seats for another show or a cash alternative. November 2016 | 21

ARTSeast caught up with well-loved actress Felicity Kendall ahead of her stunning performance in A Room With A View in Norwich this month
Felicity shot to fame in the mid-1970s as long-suffering Barbara Good opposite her self-sufficiency obsessed husband Tom in The Good Life. But her eclectic career has seen her starring in both television and stage roles, winning numerous awards along the way. Now, Felicity is starring in a fantastic new production of A Room With a View at Norwich Theatre Royal this month. She takes on the role of prim spinster Charlotte Bartlett who chaperones her pretty but naive younger cousin Lucy on a summer tour of Europe. 'Charlotte Bartlett is a very complicated lady,' says Felicity. 'On the surface she's an obvious spinster - she's not married and she's a chaperone and also rather nervous. But with (director) Adrian Noble’s help we’re finding a much more complicated person who if she lived now would have a very different life. That’s what’s interesting about the play; in the time when this story is set, it was completely different for women. The possibility of how they would live without structure and support of a man in society was completely different to what it is now and that’s what is absolutely fascinating about it. Charlotte’s life is dictated by the time she is living in.' What does Felicity relish most about playing the character? 'The fact that she is on the surface very timid but underneath, in her own way, finally very brave,' says Felicity. 'I think the complexity of this character is what I'm really looking forward to delving into and the different layers.' The play follows the 1985 Merchant-Ivory romantic movie adaptation which starred Helena Bonham-Carter as Lucy and Maggie Smith as Charlotte. But has Felicity avoided re-watching the film version? 'Yes, I have,' says Felicity. 'I love the movie. It’s a classic and my great friends Ismail Merchant, who sadly is no longer with us, and James Ivory are people I’ve known since I was 12. I’ve seen it more than once but I have deliberately not gone back to it because that was the translation then and this is what we’re doing now. I’ve spoken to James about it a while back but I won’t be doing that again, not unless he comes to see it of course. But we have to do our own version.' Touring a show has it ups and down but what does Felicity enjoy the most? 'I enjoy doing the change of venue,' she says. 'It’s a challenge when you have different theatres. It’s a very different theatre every week and the audiences are also very different,' says Felicity. 'That bit I find enjoyable. I don’t enjoy being away from home as much as I used to but then the family is much bigger now and it’s a busier time whereas when you’re young there’s nothing to leave when you go on tour.' With a career as wide and varied as Felicity's what are her highlights? 'I’ve had so many it’s difficult to choose one,' she says. 'Each sort of ten years there’s something else. Playing Juliet when I was 18 or 19 was obviously a highlight because everybody wants to have done that. Then The Good Life and going to the National Theatre, working with great living writers – each one was something very special. That’s why I love working with Adrian Noble. The joy of my work now is who I’m working with, not what I’m doing.' And is Norwich a place Felicity is familiar with? 'I love Norwich and I’m really looking forward to going back,' she says. 'It must be ten years or maybe more since I was there. The audiences there are lovely and I love where Norwich is in the world.'
