Artist ProďŹ le: Janice Alamanou Self-taught, award-winning photographer Janice Alamanou is highly-respected around the world. But her craft was honed along the coastline of North Norfolk‌

Born and bred in Wells-next-the-Sea, Janice Alamanou has always taken photos.
Everyone looks at things differently and any piece of art comes from within the artist.’
’From a very young age, I would shoot everything,’ she says. ‘The coastline in particular appealed to me and I was always out and about with my camera.’ Janice’s first book - A Personal Account of Time & Tide - features photos that she took at just 12 years old.
Completely self-taught, Janice is qualified through the British Institute of Professional Photography through her work.
At first, Janice specialised in landscapes before moving on to portraiture and fine art nudes. ‘This evolved into an amalgamation of landscapes and portraiture together,’ says Janice. ‘I find inspiration everywhere…people, scenery, places, everything around me. My photography reflects how I’m affected by what’s going on around me. It’s just pure instinct.
And that work has garnered many accolades. In recent months Janice won a Bronze Award at the British Institute of Professional Photography’s 2018 Professional Photography Awards for ‘The White Collection - Cityscapes’, had her work selected as a Permanent Museum Piece at the You Kyung Art Museum in South Korea, and reached the final four at The Global Arts Awards held at the Armani Hotel, Dubai last November for her work entitled ‘Gold Leaf’ - the first photograph with 24ct Gold Gilding.

Her work is displayed and sold through various prestigious art galleries across the world including locations in Barcelona, Florence, Vienna and Rome and is also featured in other exhibitions at locations including Monte Carlo, Milan, Paris and Cannes. In June, Janice is holding her first solo exhibition in New York for which she was booked three years in advance. Closer to home, Janice’s work is permanently available in her own gallery, Coastal Photography in Wells-next-the-Sea. ‘This is the fifth year of running the gallery,’ says Janice. ‘It suits me perfectly because, during the summer months when we are open every day, I can still get out to take photographs before we open or, later in the evening, when the light is at its best and it is lovely and quiet.’
Janice has two books coming out this year. The first - From the Shoreline - tells of her childhood in Wells and how she became a professional photographer. The second - Meandering Around Europe - focuses on Janice’s experience of living with her Greek husband on the island of Corfu, along with other areas of Europe that she has explored. ‘It’s amazing what you can see when you live somewhere like Corfu,’ says Janice. ‘The tiny details that the tourists miss.’ But for now, we are glad she is based locally so that we can enjoy her work right on our doorstep.

In late 2017, a significant collection of over 100 works by the renowned artist Sir Cedric Lockwood Morris (1889–1982) was gifted to Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury, Suffolk. These rich holdings – representing the largest single collection of the artist’s work in existence – include landscape, still life and portrait paintings, as well as drawings, prints and even the artist’s paint palette. Uniquely, these works remained part of Cedric Morris’s private studio until his death in 1982. Now, Gainsborough’s House is celebrating this important acquisition with the first exhibition curated from this very personal collection, with works selected by acclaimed painter and sculptor Maggi Hambling CBE. Cedric Morris at Gainsborough’s House presents a selection of paintings and works on paper covering Morris’s early ‘Paris Years’ (1920–1926); the poetic landscapes he painted during extensive worldwide travels; and the striking, avant-garde portraits he created of famous friends, patrons and fellow artists. Cedric Morris was born in Sketty, South Wales, and came from a wealthy background of iron and mining industrialists. After briefly studying singing at the Royal College of Music, Morris enrolled in the Académie Delacluse in Montparnasse, Paris to train as a painter. The early years of his career were spent in first Cornwall and then Paris, before Morris returned to London. Between the two world wars, he became well known and successful as an artist, exhibiting with the Seven & Five Society from 1926 to 1932. In the late 1930s, however, Morris turned his attention to teaching, founding the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in Dedham, Essex in 1937 with his lifelong partner, Arthur Lett Haines (1894–1978). Following a fire at the property in Dedham, the school moved to Benton End, a 16th-century house and gardens on the outskirts of Hadleigh, Suffolk.
The school ran for over forty years until the death of Lett Haines in 1978, and counted prominent artists such as Maggi Hambling (b. 1945) and Lucian Freud (1922–2011) as former pupils. Alongside his work as an artist, Morris was also a lifelong plantsman, earning international fame for his horticultural achievements. He established rare species of plants collected overseas, and won national acclaim as a breeder of irises, several of which now grow in the walled garden at Gainsborough’s House. As a painter deeply rooted in the story of East Anglian art, it is fitting that this private collection of Cedric Morris’s work now resides at Gainsborough’s House, forming an important part of the museum’s permanent collection and future exhibition programming as it continues to celebrate Suffolk’s many great artists, both past and present.

Norfolk art collective to exhibit works ahead of open studios

Jane Rushton: Arctic Dialogues Opening on April 25th, the Polar Museum at the Scott Polar
Curious Cabinets at Felbrigg Hall Four intriguing new installations have gone on display at the National Trust’s Felbrigg Hall in Norfolk. Inspired by the Renaissance idea of Cabinets of Curiosity, these eccentric pieces of furniture showcase previously unseen objects from the collection. The work of opera and theatre designer, Gary McCann, the four ggins
mysterious cabinets are inspired by the history of the hall, and invite onlookers to peer inside and discover the collection within. They showcase many of the weird and wonderful items from the extensive collection housed at Felbrigg, assembled over the years by residents of the house whose exotic travels shaped this extraordinary family home. From a brass Egyptian obelisk to a coffin bell, these items are rarely on show at Felbrigg and offer a glimpse into the travels of the family who collected them. This project is part of Trust New Art, a contemporary arts programme inspired by National Trust places and supported by a partnership with Arts Council England. The house is open daily, with the installations on show in the Service Wing throughout 2018.

Research Institute, Cambridge presents an exhibition by artist Jane Rushton; ‘Arctic Dialogue(s): Conversations between Art & Science’. Taking its title from the idea that artists and scientists often share common interests, concerns and methodologies, the exhibition examines how responding to these through art can create an alternative way of looking at an environment. The exhibition of drawings and mixed media work, some of which will be displayed for the first time in the UK, provides an expanded dialogue on a constantly changing arctic environment. It is particularly timely as a part of the ongoing conversation around climate change and arctic science. Whilst researching ‘Arctic Dialogues’, Jane spent time with a small group of Atmospheric Scientists in Spitzbergen on the Svalbard Archipelago between mainland Norway and the North Pole. Using this experience, Jane draws on shared activities, involving the notions of observation, investigation and experimentation under themes including scale, form, light and detail. Jane has also undertaken several research trips and exhibitions in West Greenland.

Seventh Successful Year of Suffolk Open Studios Suffolk Open Studios celebrates the county’s thriving artistic community with participating artists opening their studios to the public at weekends, giving visitors a unique opportunity to take a look “behind the scenes” and see them in action. For 2018, the programme runs over the first four weekends of June, commencing June 2nd. Over 100 artists and galleries are taking part, showing work across a wide range of media covering every aspect of art today, including painting, ceramics, glassware, pottery, sculpture and more. Visitors can learn about participating artists and plan their route by visiting the Suffolk Open Studios website or on Facebook @suffolkopenstudios. A map shows the location of all participating artists and galleries. There is also a directory which can be downloaded from the website, and hard copies will be available in galleries, libraries and tourist information centres. This year, the directory has been grouped into local regions (Babergh, Forest Heath, Ipswich, Mid-Suffolk, St Edmondsbury, Suffolk Coastal, Waveney) making it easier for visitors to identify studios nearby and plan their visit. www.suffolkopenstudios.org

An Evening with the ‘History Guy’ Historian and broadcaster Dan Snow will embark on his first UK theatre tour this summer. The 30 date tour Dan Snow – An Evening With The ‘History Guy’ On The History Hit UK Tour 2018 hits The Apex, Bury St Edmunds on June 26th and Hunstanton’s Princess Theatre on June 30th. Dan who runs his own online TV Channel History Hit TV and has a regular ‘history’ slot on The One Show, will share memorable anecdotes from his career as a historian and broadcaster during the tour. Audiences are in for an additional treat as every show will have its own exclusive ‘local’ element that will see Dan present historical facts about each town and area on the tour. There will also be a chance at the end of the show to engage with Dan during a 20 minute Q&A. Dan’s tales will be enhanced with compelling digital imagery. The son of legendary broadcaster Peter Snow and the nephew of Channel 4 newsreader Jon Snow, Dan is the great great grandson of British Prime Minister David Lloyd George. Attributing his love of history to his childhood when he recalls spending weekends being taken to castles, battlefields, country houses and churches, Dan went on to study history at Oxford University. During his stint at Oxford he also rowed in the Boat Race three times! When Dan left Oxford he started presenting history programmes with his father and their series Battlefield Britain went on to win a
BAFTA. Over the years Dan has made programmes on a number of historical topics and has presented shows such as Armada, Grand Canyon and Vikings. Dan also hosts his own podcast History Hit and is part of the BBC Events team presenting anniversary programmes commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and the landings at Gallipoli in 2015. He has written or contributed to several books including Death or Victory, the story of the siege of Quebec in 1759, The World’s Greatest Twentieth Century Battlefields and most recently The Battle of Waterloo Experience.

Today’s political landscape may seem complicated and unsettled but turn back the clock to 1974 and the corridors of Westminster were ringing with the sound of in-fighting and backbiting as power was held by a thread and Britain’s political parties battled to change the future of the nation. The political shenanigans of the hung parliament of 1974 to 1979 are the subject of This House, an exciting and critically-acclaimed drama directed by Jeremy Herrin (Wolf Hall). Following sell-out runs at the National Theatre and in the West End, it arrives at Norwich Theatre Royal from May 8th-12th. The cast – who play a colourful host of MPs and Whips - includes James Gaddas (Walter Harrison) who is best-known for playing Governor Neil Grayling in ITV's Bad Girls, and Vinnie Sorrell in Coronation Street and Martin Marquez (Bob Mellish) who is best-known on television as Gino Primirola, the head barman, in Hotel Babylon. So maybe she occasionally danced naked on tables to get a jump on her rivals, but who hasn't done that? As a fellow naked dancer on tables, Shappi is eager to celebrate the woman England betrayed. The comedian explains the genesis of “Mistress and Misfit”. ‘I was fascinated by Emma. She was really clever and compassionate and very hard done by. She was also a master of re-invention and a fantastically creative person. I initially tried to write a novel about Emma, but it was too hard, so I thought I’d do a show about it instead. That was easier

Classical Perfection in Lavenham Lavenham Sinfonia visits northern Europe for their first concert in the 2018 season on April 15th in Lavenham Church featuring Sibelius’s wellloved Second Symphony, a staple of the orchestral repertoire. The uplifting certainty of its ending seems to have struck a chord with the Finnish public at a time of Russian oppression, and it has been the most popular of his symphonies since its first performance, under the baton of the composer, in 1902. Fisher Theatre welcomes The Sweethearts of Swing The Jonathan Wyatt Big Band are visiting the Fisher Theatre in Bungay on June 16th with their show ‘Sweethearts of Swing’ which features the music of The Glenn Miller Orchestra, The Andrews Sisters, Flanagan and Allen and Vera Lynn among others. The show celebrates the legendary crooners, forces sweethearts and bandleaders of WWI and WWII, paying a nostalgic commemoration to the music, singers and big bands of the time. The band who celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2017 have played for TV shows, celebrity parties and Gala performances and are described as East Anglia’s Premier Big Band. They will be joined by swing singers Stephen and Paul Amer and the band’s own vocal harmony trio The Moonglow Sisters who will take you on a trip down Memory Lane. Dance Company brings Family Fun to Ipswich DanceEast welcome 2Faced Dance Company with What The Moon Saw, a new interactive dance and circus show for the whole family, inspired by the work of Hans Christian Anderson on April 13th & 14th. What The Moon Saw follows lonely young artist Jack as he spends his first night in a new house sketching, but his pictures only appear in black and white. Frantic, Jack opens his bedroom window to find The Moon gazing back at him, telling Jack about everything he has seen around the world through physical movement. The audience is taken with Jack on an adventure, from a dragon who is unable to breathe fire in China to a chimney sweep who dances on rooftops in London. With the help of The Moon’s stories, Jack discovers he is not alone in the world and his monochrome sketches turn to colour. On Saturday 14 April the Jerwood DanceHouse will embrace the show for a Family Fun Day, with activities throughout the building including special circus-based ‘Tots’ classes at 10.30am and 1.30pm for young children and parents to enjoy before or after the show. A variety of arts and crafts activities will be on offer including a ‘Find The Moon’ treasure hunt around the DanceHouse, a drawing competition and the opportunity for children to decorate their very own moon. www.danceeast.co.uk

The Circus comes to town for Great Yarmouth Arts Festival Great Yarmouth Arts Festival returns from June 8th. Now in its sixth year, the festival celebrates the international nature of the town and encourages everyone to get involved, with a mix of music, visual arts, theatre and this year, a massive circus street celebration. On Saturday June 9th, the festival’s traditional carnival procession celebrates circus with a pair of life-sized artist-created elephants, inspired by Barnham and Bailey’s circus. There will also be giant circus banners and costumes as the town celebrates Circus 250 – a national celebration of the art form. The procession is just the beginning of a day of circus festivities on the streets, titled Festa Fiesta. Produced by Seachange Arts, the organisation behind the Out There Festival, Festa Fiesta will bring the town’s blossoming cultural quarter and venues alive with Latin music, dance, street entertainment and food. Highlights include Tanzania’s Black Eagles – a troupe of breathtaking acrobats; purveyors of ‘Surf Noir’, the Bikini Beach Band and wacky musical street theatre from Ramshacklicious.
They’ll be workshops for all the family, an enormous piñata bash, a street beach and a range of exotic street foods. As dusk falls, the action moves inside as The Drill House plays host to the acclaimed Tipping Point, by Ockham’s Razor – a sensational circus show based around metal poles. Later in the evening, St. George’s Theatre plays host to the Festa Fiesta Dance Party with luscious live Latin rhythms from Pollito Boogaloo and Mallorca’s Dinamo. The festival continues over the next week with a varied programme including the Cavick String Quartet at Yarmouth Minster, classic farce with a production of ‘Allo ‘Allo at St. George’s Theatre and an exhibition by John Kiki and friends at Skippings Gallery.
