A Glimpse of Georgian Life
The exhibition, 'VIEW: past paintings, new view' is at Manor House, Bury St Edmunds and includes a Gainsborough portrait never exhibited to the public before . The portrait of Robert Sparrow, High Sheriff for Suffolk in 1753, was inherited by his daughter Mary and after her marriage to the Earl of Gosford remained on the walls at Gosford Castle in Northern Ireland for the next hundred years. It has been kindly lent from a private collection and will hang alongside 30 fine period paintings featuring historic local places and people. These include items from the Cullum Collection, commissioned over 250 years by a local family from the leading artists of the day, including Mary Beale, Britain’s first professional female artist, born in nearby Barrow.

His style, although still largely based in the sound draughtsmanship gained from a rigorous training, has become more impressionistic, and even dreamlike. The real world as seen through the filter of his imagination. 'Last year I moved to Suffolk which has a beautiful landscape to inspire my work,' says John. 'I'm now putting some of my creative energies into converting a large outbuilding into a studio in the village of Chediston.'
From that same tender age, John loved to draw. ‘My imagination was fed by the Thames Estuary, its ships and seaside towns such as Southend and Canvey,' says John. 'I also developed a love for researching maritime history which became an inspiration in my art.' At 16, only 3 months before leaving school, John realised that he could turn his passion into a career. Later that year, at Southend College of Art, he trained as a graphic designer and honed his skills in various London design studios. As his career progressed, and to support his growing family, John began managing other creative people and his own creative work took a back seat. But it wasn't long before John was painting and drawing again in his spare time, focusing on maritime subjects. He started selling work at South Coast sailing events and was soon exhibiting his work at

The House on the Hill Gallery This stunning gallery in a 17th-century moated farmhouse is a hidden gem amongst the beautiful surroundings of the Suffolk countryside, situated above the B1123 Halesworth Road, near Linstead Church. The gallery was once an amalgam of a farm foodstore, stable and piggery. Thanks to the vision and generosity of its patron, John Downing, it is now home to Artbox, a not-for-profit community group set up to promote the arts in the Waveney Valley, as well as a gallery for local artists. It also houses Treehouse Picture Framing.

Last year, the two makers found themselves with stalls next to each other at a Bungay Festival event - and so the idea of Moth was born. When the Rosedale funeral home became vacant after they moved to bigger premises, Didy and Dorcas took on the shop and set about turning their dream into reality. 'We came up with the name Moth in a moment of inspiration,' says Didy. 'We wanted something that suggested the ephemeral as so many handmade things are one-off pieces and wouldn’t be in the shop for long.
more stability than the ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ craft fairs so many of Moth’s makers attend. Moth also offers the opportunity for customers to find a unique maker for special commission pieces.' Now, six months after opening, Moth has around 40 makers selling their work in the shop. 'There really is something for everyone,' says Dorcas. 'From walking sticks to sheepskin slippers, original art to origami, jewellery to jam, ceramics, glassware, textile art, bunting, birdboxes, wood carvings, dog collars, notebooks and knitting. Moth is very special and, as one customer recently put it, “the sort of shop people come to Bungay for”. You can find Moth at 16 Upper Olland Street, Bungay NR35 1BG. But they wanted the name to stand for something, 'We came up with Moving On To Handmade,' says Dorcas. 'There is a trend away from mass produced stuff from China and Moth fits into that trend very well.' Between them both Didy and Dorcas knew a lot of other makers and, once the shelving units were in, the spaces were taken very quickly by a variety of different artists and crafters. 'It works really well,' says Didy, 'We charge low weekly rents for shelf space, so our makers know they should sell enough 16 |

This was echoed across the week of debates, with the word ‘joy’ widely used. These debates also embraced digital technology to increase the potential audience, including a Google Hangout that spanned three continents.

The fair provides a unique exhibiting and selling platform for contemporary book arts, combining the bustling atmosphere of a festival teamed with the quality of a fine art exhibition. Launched in 2011 by artist Jules Allen and musician Marina Florance, turn the page is one of the most prestigious book art events in the UK. Unfettered by the protocols of mass publishing, artists’ books take many forms from the conventional to the sculptural. Each year, artists from all over the globe are selected by a jury of experts to come together for this unique event. This year there will also be a stunning showcase of altered books by one of America’s pioneers of book art Brian Dettmer, and an exciting program of events including music, storytelling and poetry from acoustic folk band Two Coats Colder with guest appearance from author and poet Richard Pierce. There will be informative demonstrations showing the traditional skills of Bookbinding and Printmaking and visitors can pre-book for Paper Cutting and Calligraphy workshops. 20 |

Phaidon Art Series Every home needs an art history section of books as part of its general library and this beautiful series of books by revered art history publishers Phaidon is a perfect choice. As to be expected from Phaidon, the illustrations are of a very high quality and the text is concise, revealing and a pleasure to read. The series covers a wide range of art movements from early christian art through both the northern and Italian renaissance to Dada and the Surrealists. Each subject is handled in depth and gives the reader a strong sense of social and political background that often spurred on the art of the time. For example the writings of Sigmund Freud being key to the surrealist movement and also the power struggles of the de medici family, Borgias and the papacy powering the remarkable achievements in Italian art. There is so much to learn from this great series of books. The works of art are truly inspiring and remind us, at a time when we are hearing such despairing international news, of the heights that the human race can reach. On a purely practical level, they are a perfect size [slightly smaller than A4] to fit in your bookshelves at home. So please come and visit Diss Publishing and enjoy building your art history library!

Behind the Scenes.. at Sewell Barn Theatre This month, the cast of Sewell Barn's latest production Cowardy Custard - are hard at work perfecting their roles before the show opens in May. Here, director Cassie Tillett talks about the show, her life on stage and her belief that Sewell Barn Theatre is a very special place. 'My connection with Sewell Barn began back in 2009 when I landed the role of Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf,' says Cassie. 'As an American, dysfunctional alcoholic, it was a fantastic part to play and I fell in love with performing - and eventually directing - at Sewell Barn.'
Barn after a very successful production of The Shakespeare Revue in 2011 and the equally popular Down Among the Wines & Spirits, a celebration of the golden age of music hall last year. The show runs from May 14th-16th and 20th-23rd and celebrates Coward's huge output of words and music during his career. Using the popular revue format, it gives the performers just a matter of minutes - or in some cases seconds - to convey a character. 'The cast are really enjoying the challenges of this production,' says Cassie. 'It gives us the chance to play to their strengths. The show was chosen as it enables us to introduce music to the barn's repertoire without putting on a fully-fledged musical. Our cast of nine range in age from 25-60 and are working

fantastically together. They are a really talented bunch and the audience are in for a real treat.'
So what is it about Sewell Barn that appeals? 'As a venue, it's tiny with a capacity of 100,' says Cassie. 'With the audience on three sides it makes for a very powerful, intimate experience for both the actors and the audience.' But it's more than just the uniqueness of the venue that appeals. 'Sewell Barn has an incredibly wide variety of productions with eight shows a year,' says Cassie. 'It shows an exciting mix of experimental theatre and more traditional productions which means there really is something for everyone. The Barn also does a fantastic job of showcasing local talent and the quality of both the direction and performances is really very high.' Cowardy Custard is Cassie's third stint as a director at Sewell 24 |

Coffee & aChat Ex-Eastender Nigel Harman is soon to be making his directorial debut in Norwich with Shrek the Musical‌ When it comes to playing bad boys, Nigel Harman has a wealth of experience. As Dennis Rickman in Eastenders and Lord Farquaad in SHREK THE MUSICAL, he has perfected the art of being mean. But now Nigel is back and this time it's in a completely new role as director of SHREK THE MUSICAL which comes to Norwich Theatre Royal for three weeks in June. 'This is my directing debut but I think this moment was always coming,' says Nigel. 'Those people who have worked with me and know me well have always seen that it was in my DNA and what better way to do it than jumping in at the deep end with a huge production like SHREK THE MUSICAL.' And it's a production that Nigel knows well having won a Laurence Olivier Award in 2012 playing Lord Farquaad in the West End version. 'I love this show and it makes me laugh every time I see it,' says Nigel. 'If I have half as much fun directing the UK & Ireland tour as I did playing Lord Farquaad at Drury Lane, then I’m a happy man. My job is to translate that fun for the audiences.' Based on the smash-hit Academy Award-winning Dreamworks animation, SHREK THE MUSICAL follows the story of the lead character who sets out to rescue the beautiful but emotional Princess Fiona from a lovesick dragon. 26 |

Kid’s Corner: Diss Corn Hall In the heart of the lovely market town of Diss is the beautiful Corn Hall - a thriving arts venue offering high quality entertainment from theatre, comedy and cinema to music, family fun and art. But how would it fare as a place to entertain the children? In the middle of March we took two children - aged 5 and 6 - to watch Pop! - A Magical Comedy Show. It was billed as the most fun-filled show for children and families around but I wasn't prepared to take their word for it. But I have to say right from the start it was fantastic - and the children were completely gripped. Christian Lee - the sole performer - was just as we'd been warned. Mr Bean meets Charlie Chaplin and the kids hung on his every word. I've never heard so much laughter in one room! In a nutshell, Christian set out for a lovely day at the seaside with his faithful teddy bear and magical picnic basked when
suddenly he's caught in a spectacular storm. Cue illusions, comedy, floating snowflakes, audience participation and a giant balloon and you have all the ingredients for a fun-filled hour. The venue was great - they even provided colouring in before the show began - and the children were allowed to roam around and join in. We'll definitely be heading back to one of the many shows they have coming up for children throughout the year. On April 18th Garlic Theatre presents Shoe Kangaroo and the Big Bad Boot using clowning, mime and beautifully crafted puppets. My Friend Mole comes to Diss on May 16th. Brought to life by Birdsnest Theatre this delightful mix of live music, storytelling, imagination and a rich visual language tells the gentle tale of a very special friendship. On June 13th, the Corn Hall hosts an IMPS Make & Play Father's Day Special. Here, children aged 3-8, can make some lovely gifts to surprise Dad, plus there's lots of time to explore the post office (colouring, stamping, posting) and the workshop (hammering, squirting, whisking). Dress for mess! To keep in touch with what's coming up throughout the year and to book tickets - go to www.disscornhall.co.uk or call 01379652241.

Artist’s Paradise in Norwich Norwich Art Supplies was started by Daniel Goldsworthy 20 years ago in response to the demands of artists who were having to travel to London to buy their materials. In St. Benedict's Street since 1997, Daniel, along with family members Pauline and Connor, have been careful to fill the shop with quality materials for all media. 'ere's nothing more frustrating than buying something which promises everything then fails to deliver,' says Daniel. 'We always try to respond to what our customers are telling us they want. For me it's the best way to do business.' e shop is crammed with everything for painters, printmakers and potters. e shop may be traditional, but they also sell on-line via their website.
