ART EXHIBITION by Samuel Thomas

Red Lion Hotel – Cromer, August 14th - 31st Celebrated Norfolk artist Samuel Thomas unveils an exciting and refreshing array of colourful pop-art inspired Norfolk Landscapes. The artist’s distinctive and contemporary yet timeless paintings are collected all over the world with limited edition signed prints starting at £95 each. The Cromer-born artist opens his large 18-day solo exhibition coinciding with Cromer Carnival. On display will be his vast portfolio of artwork alongside some new original paintings, one of which will be auctioned off in a silent-bid charity public auction. The highest bidder becomes the proud owner of the artwork knowing that the total sum will be donated to Cancer

around 25 original paintings, framed and unframed prints of vibrant Norfolk scenes designed to lift your spirits. Also a large range of greeting cards will be available to purchase. Original paintings range from small to very large statement pieces, starting from £395 up to £1500. Samuel captures a sense of nostalgia in his works similar to the now iconic ‘Come to the Seaside’ rail posters of the 1920’s but with a modern twist. These are not backward-looking pastiches, but aspirational projections of the self into a better future. The informal exhibition welcomes everyone and the Red Lion bar and restaurant overlooks Cromer’s seafront. All of the artwork is available to purchase at the exhibition but you can also order online at www.samuelthomasart.co.uk

At the centre of this dark, rural tale is an exploration of human fear and difference, and the journey a chicken takes from processing factory to kitchen table. The show consists of stories including being serenaded at the break of dawn by Robert Smith, trekking mountain gorillas in Rwanda and coming to the conclusion that he will never have a proper conversation with his dear mum. There will be a few poems and a 3-minute musical about ageing too.

From Shirley Valentine to Norwich Theatre Royal, ARTSeast catches up with superstar Tom Conti ahead of his performance in play Before the Party...

Coffee & aChat

When we caught up with Tom he was in the midst of casting for the show. 'This is absolutely the worst bit for me,' he said. 'Sometimes you can see how hungry an actor is but, when he or she delivers the lines, you know there's not a chance they'll get the part. I've been there and that's tough.'

Coee & a Chat

It's hard to imagine that Tom Conti has ever struggled at an audition. With a string of film and theatre accolades to his name, Tom has won critical acclaim for his roles including an Olivier Award for his performance in Whose Life is it Anyway on the West End and a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his role in the film Reuben Reuben. But becoming an actor wasn't Tom's first passion. 'I actually trained as a conductor,' says Tom. 'Then one day I spotted a sign at my music college pointing to a drama class and I decided to give it a go.' It was a decision that changed the course of Tom's life, ultimately turning him into a household name. 'It's very hard to make it to the top of the ladder as a conductor,' says Tom. 'I would have been too lazy and ultimately not been able to enjoy the opportunities and lifestyle I now have thanks to how my career has turned out.

'He truly believes that everything English is wonderful. I'm looking forward to learning how to speak in the proper English of that period.'

Theatre is Tom's passion and Before the Party - based on a short story by Somerset Maugham - offers up a script that is both amusing and dark.

Alongside his acting career, Tom is also the author of a novel entitled The Doctor about a former Secret Operations pilot with intelligence services. 'It's essentially a love story with moments of adventure,' says Tom. 'I've also just finished another novel which is provisionally titled The Wrong Time so watch this space!' says Tom.

'I truly believe there is no drama without wit around it,' says Tom. 'Before the Party is the perfect balance of light and dark.'

With rehearsals starting this month, Tom is looking forward to seeing the sights of Norwich when the tour reaches our region.

Set after the Second World War, Before the Party tells the tale of the Skinner family who are trying to return to normal but are suffering thanks to government-imposed rations. With daughter Laura returned from Africa, widowed but not alone, they prepare for the latest social gathering. Amidst the neverending whirl of hats and dresses and below stairs skirmishes, Laura reveals a shocking secret that threatens to ruin more than one party on the climb to social success.

'That's the best thing about touring as I get to see so many parts of our lovely country,' says Tom. 'I've been to Theatre Royal before back in 2013 in a production called Rough Justice and it was a nice venue.'

''I play a pompous solicitor called Aubrey Skinner,' says Tom.

Before the Party runs from September 14th-19th. Tickets: www.theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk, tel: 01603 630000

A Star in the Making Buskers are common in Norwich city centre – especially at the weekend. Busy shoppers and workers sometimes hesitate, listen for a short while and maybe donate a few coins. But one busker in particular has stood out in recent months. Attractive flame-haired Hayley Moss, 29 of Horning, has been drawing crowds; literally stopping people in their tracks as she sings a range of operatic songs, show tunes and country music on London Street and Gentleman’s Walk. People have described Hayley’s voice as “mesmerising”, “amazing”,“beautiful” and “pure”. Pedestrians feel compelled to stop, listen and donate; some saying that Hayley is not so much busking as providing an open air concert! They express

amazement that such a high quality singer is performing on the streets, instead of a West End stage. Amazingly, Hayley has received no formal voice training. Hayley is determined to make it big in the music business, but insists that she will never act “diva-like”, preferring to be friendly down-to-earth and approachable.

Kid’s Corner: Latitude Festival My first Latitude in 2006 was the festival’s inaugural year when it was still a novelty to see world-class performers like Snow Patrol, The Crimea, and Ed Harcourt play to 20,000 people in the Suffolk countryside. It was only my second-ever visit to Suffolk and it was part of what made me fall in love with the area and the boyfriend who took me there. Over the years Latitude has not only grown – in 2014 attendance was 35,000 - but it has weaved into our lives, becoming an integral part of our summer schedule. As children arrived, mosh pits inevitably became less central to our Latitude experience - this year Portishead, Alt J, the surprise visit of Ed Sheeran in the woods and others were missed in order to take wilting children to the fantastic fire show in the kids’ area.

New to this year’s festival was the swimming arena which, despite queues of over an hour, seemed even more popular than the bar. We wandered on past to ‘The Other Voices’ stage which became one of our favourite haunts thanks to the disco ball in the woods where we could dance away to the sublime sounds of Fight Like Apes, All Tvvins and Nathaniel Rateliff. The 10th Latitude holds another special place in our family album as we look forward to seeing what the teenage years will bring.

Isobel Demangeat-Ransome

I celebrated the 10th Latitude with my six-year-old and a group of friends, all with children the same age. The children were in a wonderland as they enjoyed the Suffolk Wildlife Trust bug hunt in the woods or never-ending supply of bubbles. The Blixen fire pit gave us a perfect chill-out area in the haze of the early evening. Seasick Steve and his many guitars were a great hit with the children and proved to be a musical highlight of the whole weekend.

Ahamed Ali performs at the International Literature Showcase 2015

New International Project for Writers’ Centre Norwich

WCN Chief Executive, Chris Gribble outlines the vision: We were delighted this month to hear that Arts Council England will invest in our International Literature Showcase partnership with British Council. This is an ambitious programme which will support emerging writers, translators and literature development professionals. We very much plan to work collaboratively and for the investment to help strengthen the whole UK literature sector.

Arts Council

The grant will enable us to work with British Council to lead a two and half year project to help writers, live literature performers, producers and other literature professionals reach international markets and to support literature organisations in their international working. The ‘International Literature Showcase’ will be curated as a digital programme in 2016 and then in 2017 it will return to Norwich as England’s UNESCO, City of Literature. It will be the leading opportunity to promote UK writing talent overseas. This long-term investment enables us to work with 75 emerging writers and an additional 75 literature professionals to create over 200 opportunities for international working. Our ambition is to reach specialised audiences of over 40,000 through the digital showcase. The work and partnerships we form will reflect the diversity and strength of new work coming out of England, responding to real interest in the way we use literature to address social concerns and how we support emerging talent from harder to reach groups. The project builds on a pilot showcase we ran in March this

Local Arts Scene: Bungay

Beautiful Bungay Nestled on the border with Norfolk this pretty Suffolk market town is situated in a bend of the beautiful River Waveney. Its unusual name is thought to derive from the Anglo-Saxon 'Bunincga-haye', meaning the land belonging to the tribe of Bonna, a Saxon chieftain. Prominent in the town are the ruins

Spotlight on....Jason Collins of Cantaria As conductor of the Cantaria youth choir in Bungay - and manager of the tearooms at nearby Earsham Hall - Jason Collins is a big part of the town's art scene.

January this year, we'd found seven female members and began to rehearse weekly. Our debut performance took place in July 4th at the Fisher Theatre and was a magical night. The girls sang with long-established Doo-Wop group the Testosta Tones and brought the house down.

Q. How did Cantaria Youth Choir came about? Q. So what are your plans for the future of Cantaria? Initially I set up Cantaria back in 2004 in Norwich where I was studying music at the UEA. I conducted a group of fellow students and we raised money for local charities. Gradually, after our graduation, the choir members started forging musical careers in their own rights and slowly Cantaria wound up and I moved on to conducting other choirs in the Norwich area. Fast forward six years and I found myself in Bungay - at the time working as manager of the Fisher Theatre - and dreaming of setting up a youth choir. In December 2014 I approached the Town Reeve, a gentleman called Terry Reeve, about the possibility of setting up Cantaria Youth Choir and was thrilled when he made us his chosen charitable appeal for 2015.

Q. So, how did you go about putting the choir together?

I'd love to grow the choir to a maximum of 16 voices so if anyone under the age of 18 reading this would like to join, then please get in touch. We are performing at St Mary's Church, Bungay on December 1st and will also be announcing other shows so watch this space.

Q. Aside from Cantaria, what else are you working on? I conduct for Bungay Choral Society which I absolutely love as they're a really fantastic bunch of people and we have a lot of fun. Music aside, I've also taken over the running of the beautiful Earshall Hall Tearooms. It's a fantastic setting and we're open seven days a week from 9am-5pm. You can also take a historical tour of Earshall Hall itself and then nip in for afternoon tea if that takes your fancy.

I took to Facebook and appealed for people to come along and we distributed many flyers to local schools. By mid
