The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts presents ‘SUPERSTRUCTURES: The New Architecture 1960-90’, marking the 40th anniversary of the opening of the gallery, the first ever public building designed by Norman Foster. The exhibition will tell the story of architecture’s fascination with technology in the post-war decades, and the drive to develop new architectural forms utilising lightweight structures, industrialised building techniques and innovative engineering solutions. In doing so, architects and engineers evolved a new typology of building or ‘superstructure’, rethinking the places and spaces of culture, work, travel and living in ways that have been globally influential.

Often referred to as ‘High-Tech’, this label is regarded unfavourably by some as misleading in its suggestion of a singular ‘style’. The exhibition will evidence how this new modern architecture emerged from a generation of (largely British) architects who challenged convention. Immersed in the utopian and experimental ideas of late modernism, they shared a commonality of ideas, forms and materials. They were fascinated by the structural engineering innovations that followed the 19th century, and were determined to apply the techniques of industrial production and assembly to buildings. Norman Foster’s Sainsbury Centre building epitomises the new architecture

born of this technological spirit: a ‘wellserviced shed’ with a lightweight and extendable steel structure wrapped in a ‘skin’ of glass and plastic clip-on panels, adaptable (and adapted) as the building’s functions changed or grew over time. It quickly became a paradigm of new museum building, but the ideas of structural ingenuity and expression, appropriate technology and industrial materials were applied to projects of all types and scales including factories, offices, transport hubs and homes. The exhibition will invite visitors to discover not only how the Sainsbury Centre was made, but also to understand how earlier feats of engineering such as The Crystal Palace inspired buildings of its

kind. Audiences will encounter striking examples of superstructures created for many different uses. On display for the first time, a brand new three-metre-long model of the Sainsbury Centre will be joined by a selection of iconic models on loan from international collections, rarely seen together. These include the Reliance Controls Factory by Team 4 (Sue Brumwell, Wendy Cheesman, Norman Foster & Richard Rogers); the Pompidou Centre by Rogers and Renzo Piano; Rogers’ Lloyd’s of London Building; Foster’s Willis Faber Dumas Office; Waterloo International Rail Station by Nicholas Grimshaw and the Hopkins House by Michael and Patty Hopkins.

The exhibition will explore the seminal influence of figures such as Buckminster Fuller, Jean Prouvé, Charles and Ray Eames and Cedric Price. Examples of ‘technology transfer’ will show how techniques were adapted from the automotive, nautical, aerospace and information industries to create bold new materials and innovative industrial processes. The exhibition will include a range of fascinating objects from drawings and paintings, models, furniture and product design to photographs and film, and will consist of national and international loans, as well as items from the Sainsbury Centre’s own collection.

The steel, glass and tensile structures associated with the High-Tech label are now ubiquitous, found on retail outlets and office blocks the world over. The exhibition will demonstrate how the most distinctive and experimental architectural idea to emerge from modernism at its end also became one of the most enduring and influential architectural languages of the late 20th century. The exhibition will be accompanied by a book published by the Sainsbury Centre. The exhibition runs from March 24th September 2nd at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich. National Touring Exhibition comes to Norwich Visible Girls: Revisited, is a photography commission and national travelling exhibition of female portraits by photographer Anita Corbin. The exhibition brings together original images of women from different subcultures of the early 1980s and newly commissioned portraits of the same women now. This work reunites women with their adolescent selves, exploring the ways in which photography can reveal and reflect upon identity and society at various stages of women's lives. Accompanying the images will be original tape recordings from 1981 of interviews with some of the girls – and written interviews with the women made in 2017. The stories behind each image are revealed, exploring how the women's lives have changed since the original shot was taken. The exhibition runs at Norwich Arts Centre from February 7th-March 14th. Two new double portraits taken by Corbin in 2017 will be revealed for the first time in Norwich. A special events programme accompanies the exhibition, including an artist’s talk with Anita Corbin on February 24th. Anita Corbin will also be taking to the streets of Norwich, photographing and interviewing pairs of friends to capture the spirit of Norwich – it’s subcultures and friendships - on Feb 25th-26th.

Swan Lake: Vienna Festival Ballet RoughCast presents Measure for Measure Passion, injustice, hypocrisy and power are at the centre of Shakespeare’s darkly comic exploration of social justice and sexual politics. Lord Angelo, appointed to govern in the absence of the Duke, insists on the strict implementation of 'the all binding law',sentencing to death the young Claudio for getting his wife-tobe pregnant. But what of Angelo's control and authority when he falls prey to exactly those urges when Isabella, a novice nun, pleads for her brother's life. Caught up in the action are a medley of nuns and prostitutes, a pirate, pimps and friars. Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall. RoughCast return to the Fisher Theatre with their 13th Shakespeare.

Miss Belltop-Doyle can't control her year 10s, Mr Pashley has been put in charge of a confiscated tamagotchi and Miss Turner is hoping that this muck-up day goes smoother than the last. Tobias, the German language assistant, watches on. Things can only get better. Education, Education, Education is The Wardrobe Ensemble's love letter to the schools of the 90s and asks big questions about a country in special measures, exploring what we are taught and why, and where responsibility lies. The show is on March 24th at Norwich Playhouse. The Wardrobe Ensemble use their trademark inventive theatricality and irreverent humour to explore the stories that have shaped our recent political history, and what the future might look like.

The Kite Runner

This emotional interpretation of a modern classic is set to wow Norwich audiences… The years of conflict in war-torn Afghanistan have been a regular feature of television news bulletins for many years leading to the impression of a troubled country whose citizens have endured decades of tribulation and hardship. Yet in the modern classic The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini’s awardwinning 2003 iconic novel, there is a sense of the humanity and hope that exists when you scratch beneath the rubble-strewn surface. The novel has now been adapted for the stage by playwright and director Matthew Spangler. The result enjoyed two acclaimed West End seasons playing to over 100,000 people and is now it is on a nationwide tour, arriving at Norwich Theatre Royal from March 5th-10th. A powerful dramatization, it gives a compelling portrait of two young boys who grow up in the same household and whose lives become linked across the years, beginning in the war-torn streets of Kabul and spanning cultures and continents across three decades of modern history. Judy Foster caught up with actor Amiera Darwish who plays the parts of Soraya and Mrs Nguyen. ‘The image we have of Afghanistan is like we only ever see the bad bits, and it’s nice for younger generations, and every generation actually to see the beautiful side of this country, the tradition and respect,’ says Amiera. ‘I knew nothing about it – the culture where it came from.’ An intriguing part of that culture is the highly competitive sport of kite running which is one of the most popular hobbies in Afghanistan for men and boys. Kite owners fix crushed glass to the string of their kites to cut the lines of their opponents. Those boys who are too poor to have their own kites compete instead by running to retrieve the losing kites as they plummet to the ground.

The story is narrated by the character of Amir as he grows from a small boy to an adult. The play opens with Amir playing at kite running with his closest friend, Hassan, who is the son of his father’s faithful servant Baba. Yet Amir feels conflicted about his friendship as he is from the ruling Pashtun class while Hassan is an Hazara, who traditionally made up the lower servant class. Amir witnesses Hassan being brutalised in an horrific incident, and then compounds the damage by telling a damning lie. The guilt follows him into a new life with his family in America where he settles as part of an ex-pat Afghan community and marries – until finally he returns to his homeland to try to put the lie to rest and to seek redemption for his mistake by making amends. There is a traditional wedding scene in which Amiera’s character Soraya marries the adult Amir after the family have moved to America. ’When the wedding comes it is a bit of a relief for the audience,’ says Amiera. ‘Amir has gone through everything but he has found this girl and they love each other. She has also been through difficult decisions in her life and she confronts them. They equalize each other and come together in that moment of joy.’ There is much that is educative about The Kite Runner and, despite the rollercoaster emotional ride it takes audiences on, Amiera feels its over-riding message is one of hope. ‘I think hope is a huge thing – I saw an audience member who came out with a massive smile on her face and she said ‘I am full of hope,’ says Amiera. ‘She said it showed you that no matter what has happened, you can correct it. You can move on and you can repair things and make new redeeming friendships.’ The Kite Runner runs from March 5th-10th www.theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk

Critically-acclaimed band The Jive Aces bring their magic to The Corn Hall, Diss in April The first live band to reach the final rounds of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, The Jive Aces have firmly established themselves as the UK’s No.1 Jive & Swing band. On April 21st, they are heading to The Corn Hall, Diss for what promises to be a spectacular night. The live show includes classics like ‘When You’re Smiling’, ‘Mack the Knife’ and ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’, plus originals such as ‘La Dolce Vita’ taken from their various albums. The in-demand sextet have worked with Van Morrison, Keely Smith and performed for HM the Queen. They headlined and sold-out the Royal Albert Hall including Buckingham Palace for the Coronation Festival, Trafalgar Square for the Olympics and major theatre tours in the USA. The new albums ‘Diggin' The Roots Vol.1 Rockin' Rhythm & Blues’ and ‘Vol.2: Hot Jazz’ are a journey into the two branches of music that makes up the Jive Aces signature sound,

proving that vintage music is very much timelessly classic. The Jive Aces wowed the judges on Britain’s Got Talent with their show-stopping version of ‘I Wanna Be Like You’, which famously cheered up a grumpy Simon Cowell. Their BGT appearances were seen by over 20 million. Their most popular music video, ‘Bring Me Sunshine’, is a viral hit with nearly 3 million views on Youtube and has won seven film festival awards. It’s so uplifting it’s actually been prescribed by a doctor! Joining The Jive Aces for the tour are Guest singer Miss Amy Baker, a sensational young singer from Portsmouth, whose warm, jazzy vocals invoke such legends as Keely Smith, Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee

and the JiveSwing.com lindy hoppers led by the champion jitterbuggers Charlotte and Joseph renowned for their energetic and fun performances of this classic American swing dance.

Horrors head to Yarmouth The Circus of Horrors – ‘VOODOO’ is on tour throughout the UK and reaches the Yarmouth Hippodrome on March 8th and 9th with shows at 8pm. The last few years has seen the profile of The Circus of Horrors jump tremendously after rampaging into the finals of Britain's Got Talent and to this date it is still the only circus ever to reach the finals. Its appearances on various subsequent TV shows have turned what set out as a cult show into a household name – taking the extreme to the mainstream. Its TV credits now boast The X Factor, The Slammer, Daybreak, Fairground Attractions, Who wants to be a Millionaire, Body Shockers, Fake Reaction, This Morning, Ant & Dec, The One Show & A Royal Command Performance. Last year saw another giant leap for the show when it began a series of dates in London’s West End becoming the first circus to appear in a West End Theatre for 100 years & in 2015 sees the show return to The Fuji Rock Festival in Japan.

A True Theatrical Gem

The Heart of the Community… The Fisher Theatre is Central to Bungay Life Behind the big blue doors of the historic Fisher Theatre, there’s a hive of community activity. Boasting much more than theatre and music, the Fisher supports and hosts a variety of endeavours.

Halloween’s sell-out ‘Curse of the Black Death’, an immersive experience at Bungay Castle, the pantomime 2018, and look out for the Easter Adventure in April.

‘Thursdays at the Fisher’ is a weekly art-group for those with brain injury and dementia, who find themselves in need of social activity. Leading from the group’s success, the Fisher Theatre is liaising with the community to provide more dementia-friendly activities such as cinema.

Open-mic events also draw in local talent. The monthly ‘Fisher Folk & Acoustic’ event is never short of new performers wanting to entertain and, running alongside the music programme, is the ‘Poetry Open Mic’, which is growing and supported by Bungay Writers Group who meet twice a month at the Fisher. This season sees the first of a series of talks given by local experts.

‘Cinema & Create’ has been successful on a Sunday morning. The sessions allow young children to experience cinema in a relaxed environment and then afterwards they take part in themed craft activities. The theatre is home to community drama groups for both adults and children. FYTG (Fisher Youth Theatre Group), now in its 17th year, is attracting numbers previously unrecorded. FYTG provides performancebased education and activities for the young people of Bungay. Meanwhile, UpShoot, Fisher’s adult group, is a talented group of auditioned local actors, writers and directors. Successes include

The building itself is versatile and a special place for Weddings, Parties and other events. With limitless options for style and decoration, the theatre is fully equipped with great lighting, sound and, of course, a talented catering team. With a firm focus on the residents of Bungay, the Fisher Theatre is dedicated to enriching community life. In addition to providing a wide range of volunteering opportunities, the Fisher hosts many community engagement activities such as free events for children during holidays, like the ‘Pumpkin Party’ at the Castle
