The Battle of the Nile, 1 August 1798, End of the Action, 1799 by Thomas Whitcombe © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

The one-off exhibition Nelson & Norfolk sails into Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery from July 29th and presents some of the most extraordinary and potent objects connected to Nelson, from his boyhood in Norfolk to his death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The undisputed centrepiece is the highly important, early French Tricolour - the monumental Ensign (or flag) of the French warship Le Généreux, which took part in the Battle of the Nile in 1798. A British victory, the battle sealed Nelson’s reputation as England’s greatest hero. Although Le Généreux was one of only two ships from the French fleet to escape this historic battle, it was subsequently captured, on February 18th 1800 and its Ensign was despatched as a gift to

the City of Norwich by Sir Edward Berry, Admiral Lord Nelson’s flag captain. The huge Ensign of Le Généreux (it measures 16m x 8.3m – roughly the size of a tennis-court) is one of the most iconic objects connected to Norfolk’s most famous son, Admiral Lord Nelson. This is the first time this historic object has been on public exhibition for more than a century. A Just Giving fundraising project has been launched in a bid to raise £5,000 towards the £40,000 cost of preserving the exhibition’s centrepiece and to provide accessible storage, which will allow it to be enjoyed by visitors to other venues and also to be featured in a proposed permanent display in Norwich. Alongside Le Généreux’s Ensign, other important objects on display in this

specially curated exhibition include the black velvet drape from Nelson’s funeral car, a uniform worn by a Greenwich Volunteer who guarded Nelson’s coffin during his two day lying-in-state, a model of the funeral barge made by a French prisoner of war at Norman Cross internment camp and extensive Nelson funeral memorabilia. Particularly noteworthy is the sword surrendered to Nelson by the Spanish Admiral Xavier Winthuysen after the Battle of Cape St Vincent on February 14th 1797. When two Spanish ships, the San Nicolas and the San Josef, became entangled Nelson was able to board one then the other. On the deck of the San Josef, Nelson received the surrendered swords of the Spanish, including this one.

The Ensign of Le Généreux (Top) Photographed at St Andrew’s Hall, Norwich in October 2016 © Norfolk Museums Service

Personalia from Strangers’ Hall in Norwich include a lock of Nelson’s hair, owned originally by Captain Hardy and given to Norwich Museums in 1847, a napkin bearing the monogram of NB for Nelson Duke of Bronte, an honour conferred to him after the Battle of the Nile, as well as scraps of the British Ensign and sailcloth from HMS Victory. Extremely apt to be exhibited together with the Ensign from Le Généreux is Nelson’s famous coat, which he wore at the Battle of the Nile. Made in wool and linen with large brass buttons and gold alloy braiding, this is a typical flag officer’s undress coat of the period. The coat also gives an indication as to how slight Nelson was. It is one of the important pieces kindly loaned by the National Maritime Museum Greenwich along with a dramatic oil painting by artist Thomas Whitcombe which vividly depicts the

drama of the final moments of the Battle of the Nile on August 1st 1798. Complementing the important loans from major national museums and institutions around the country are additional fascinating and unique objects drawn from Norfolk Museums Service’s own Nelson archives, as well as other local collections in the county including those of Norwich Social History, Fine and Decorative Art, the Great Yarmouth Sailors’ Home, as well as Nelson’s schools; The Norwich School and Paston College. Numerous items have also been generously loaned by private collectors. Nelson & Norfolk is not intended to be a chronology of the life and times of Nelson illustrated by objects. Instead this exhibition takes its starting point and narrative from the objects themselves. In bringing together so much authentic

material, the exhibition reflects the ways in which Nelson has been represented in imagery and how his remarkable life story has been told through objects. Likewise a strong cohesive thread is the affection that Nelson had for the county that ‘gave him birth’ and Norfolk’s immeasurable pride in its most famous son. This is the first time that these objects have ever been presented together in one exhibition. The exhibition is timely in that coincides with the 200th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of the Nelson memorial in Great Yarmouth, the county’s most significant memorial to its local hero. Nelson & Norfolk runs from July 29th October 1st 2017 at Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery. For more information go to www.museums.norfolk.gov.uk

Iceni Botanical Artists Exhibition IBA are delighted to be back at Wymondham Arts Centre again this summer from August 7th13th. Around 100 paintings will be on show, all devoted to the plant kingdom, reflecting many styles of painting, mostly in watercolour. The work ranges from loose and free interpretations to scientifically accurate plant portraits. They are also featuring this year the topic of “Hedgerows and Verges” which will hopefully heighten awareness of the wonderful range of plants to be found in our hedgerows through the seasons and the profusion of wild flowers that have taken up residence on the undisturbed grass verges along roadsides. In December 2016 their book “Breckland Wild Flowers – Heaths and Grasslands” was published which is proving popular. It features 45 watercolour paintings of Breckland wild flowers, including rare and endangered plants. Copies of the book will be for sale at the exhibition along with Giclee prints of paintings taken from the book. There are prizes for the best work in three categories -” Botanical Excellence”,”A Favourite Painting “ and the “Public's Popular Vote”. As well as creating a buzz with members, it also always engages the public to view the work with added enthusiasm and the dilemma of delicious indecision! www.icenibotanicalartists.co.uk

Embracing Culture Firmly entrenched on the nation's festival calendar, Suffolk’s Latitude Festival offers a feast of delights for the whole family

Public Service Broadcasting

Now in its 12th edition, Latitude Festival once again sets the bar high for summer festivals, with a host of new names added to the line up across the Music stages, Music & Film Arena and talks in the Wellcome Trust Arena, the Speakeasy and the Faraway Forest. Latitude Festival takes place on 13th - 16th July in the stunning grounds of Henham Park, Suffolk. Public Service Broadcasting will be joining a star-studded line up in the Obelisk Arena alongside this years’ headliners The 1975, Mumford and Sons and Fleet Foxes. The innovative outfit craft one of the most visually stunning live shows on the festival circuit, taking material from their

critically acclaimed back catalogue to intergalactic new heights. Norway’s Sløtface, who have proved themselves as one of the most exciting new acts of the year will be joining the stellar music line up. Another raucous live act joining the bill is Dead Pretties, who have been wowing crowds across our nation’s capital over the last year. Saint Motel will bring a dreamy-pop performance to the Sunrise Arena, while Suffolk’s own Bessie Turner and 80s influenced jokers Rad Pitt join the Lake Stage line up as part of BBC Introducing. The Music and Film Arena will play host to one of the brightest MC talents

to emerge from the UK’s buzzing grime underground scene in recent years, AJ Tracey, and MC, producer and Best Grime Act MOBO Award nominee, Novelist. Hip-hop DJ and Radio 1 Xtra host DJ Semtex will join them, taking the Latitude party late into the night. Dutch electronic producer, songwriter and vocalist Chagall will perform Collaboration, and leading variety performer La Voix will dazzle the Latitude audience with a one of a kind performance with actress Harriet Thorpe. The Music & Film Arena will host a screening of Whitney: Can I Be Me; a documentary unveiling an unparalleled look at the life and

Alt.Russia takes you on Placebo’s tour from Krasnoyarsk in Siberia to St Petersburg in the Baltic Sea, investigating the alternative culture in Russia from artists, architects, animators and musicians whilst taking in the raw emotions of Latitude’s Friday BBC Music Stage headliners, Placebo who will introduce the film to the Latitude crowd in person. The director behind the legendary Jason Bourne action thrillers, Paul Greengrass, and director of 2016’s criticallyacclaimed biographical drama A United Kingdom, Amma Asante, will each be in

conversation with outspoken and respected UK film critic Mark Kermode in the Music and Film Arena. Mark Kermode will reveal the guilty pleasures of cinema as he brings his lively and wildly popular show In 3D, that explores, critiques and dissects movies past and present with the Latitude audience. Artist, musician and Turner-Prize winner Martin Creed will present an iconoclastic discussion of art, humour and subversion through his stage show Words and Music, whilst Bruce Parry teams up with Jon Sauven of Greenpeace to discuss his latest film TAWAI; a voice from the forest where Bruce lives with indigenous people of the world on a quest into the heart of

the human conscience. The Music and Film Arena will be compered across the weekend by Maria Ruban, and will also see a performance from up and coming band, Harry Lloyd’s Waiting For Smith. This year’s timely theme Come the Revolution will continue to be expressed through the most cutting-edge scientific research and the words and wit of writers, researchers and scientists from across the UK and beyond.

Coffee & aChat As Norwich Theatre Royal prepares to host its annual summer production by students of its arts courses, we caught up with Arts Director David Lambert to find out what makes the courses so successful‌

July/Aug 2017

Norwich Theatre Royal’s Arts Courses are renowned for offering both young people and adults the chance to learn all aspects of theatre arts under the guidance of experienced tutors. For the past 28 years, David Lambert has worked as Arts Director for the courses and is responsible both for their running but also for the writing and production of their popular summer shows that take place on the Theatre Royal’s stage. We caught up with David as rehearsals were well underway for his latest production Alice Back in Wonderland. ‘My job involves a wide variety, from planning and timetabling the Courses, both for Adults and Young People; supervising our nationally-accredited Examination Syllabus; directing productions with the Youth Theatre Company; and last but not least writing the book, lyrics and music for the annual Summer musical production which takes place at the Theatre Royal, involving over 250 young people aged between 8 and 19 – and then directing the show!’ says David. David’s passion for the role is clear but what have been the highlights so far? ‘Highlights? That’s a difficult one – there have been so many,’ says David. ‘We did a tour of The Passion to three cathedrals some years ago, and that was great fun; and there have been loads of enjoyable productions – too many to single out!’ Over the years, David has directed more than 150 productions with the young people on the courses. ‘Each generation of students brings its own memorable moments – and some have returned to us to teach, bringing what they’ve learned and experienced in the big wide world to share with our students,’ says David.

‘One of the most memorable moments was my 25th Anniversary production, Wind in the Willows, when a number of past students now in the industry returned to appear in the show over the week to help me celebrate. The buzz was incredible.’ As testament to the success of the course, many past students have gone on to forge successful careers within the industry both on and off stage. ‘It’s always wonderful when one of our students gains a place at one of the prestigious Drama Schools, but it’s equally great when someone achieves something special in whatever area they have gone for – we’ve got lots of alumni who are now teachers, doctors

more of our alumni working in the industry, not necessarily household names – but that’s what it’s about: consistently working as an actor in a business that is notorious for its unemployment rate!’ In July, the latest production of Alice Back in Wonderland takes to the stage. ‘Alice returns to Wonderland because the land has been overrun by the Red Queen and her Chess Army and Alice is needed to sort things out,’ says David. ‘There’s lots of laughs and some rather good songs, with plenty of the favourite characters appearing – the White Rabbit, Mad Hatter, March Hare, Queen of Hearts, Tweedledum and Tweedledee and so on – and there’s a little bit of pathos as well as far as Alice is concerned.’ There are many performing arts courses in the region but what makes the Theatre Royal’s courses so specials?

and other important roles, many of whom would say that being part of the Youth Theatre has helped them to get where they are,’ says David. ‘As far as actors and directors go, there have been lots of them – I suppose the best-known would be Sam Claflin (Hunger Games, Me Before You and other films too numerous to mention!); but there’s also his brother Joe who appeared in Game of Thrones; Lisa Taylor-Ellis (Roots at the Donmar Warehouse); Daisy Maywood, most recently gaining rave reviews for her leading role in the musical Promises Promises; Nic Jackman, currently in Holby City as Cameron Dunne; Kirsty Bushell who is at Shakespeare’s Globe this season as Juliet; Martin Hutson, who has worked everywhere from the RSC to Chichester Festival and the West End, including opposite Kim Cattrall in Antony & Cleopatra. And there’s a lot

|

‘Too many things!’ says David. ‘It’s the tutors and show directors, who work tirelessly to encourage, inform and develop our young people’s abilities and knowledge, and who bring their own talents to the table selflessly and wonderfully; it’s the opportunity for young people to perform their own specially written musical for a week onstage at the Theatre Royal; it’s the students themselves. Although quite a few producing theatres around the country have similar Youth Theatres or training for young people, I can’t think of any that have something as large and wide-ranging as the Theatre Arts Courses – and we’re pretty proud of that!’

Alice Back in Wonderland runs from July 26th-29th. For more information on Norwich Theatre Royal Arts Courses or to book tickets go to www.theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk

A New Concept in Film Gritty, rough hewn and dextrous multi-instrumentalists Dead Rat Orchestra have teamed up with the amazing folk singer Lisa Knapp and analogue film-maker James Holcombe to take the concept of the live film soundtrack to a new level. As well as the music being live, Holcombe will recut this film Tyburnia live at every date using six projectors and three screens adding exclusive local footage. The tour visits Norwich Arts Centre on July 27th where it will be introduced by a local historian to give a Norfolk perspective. The film is a radical history of 600 years of public execution, (London’s Tyburn, near Marble Arch, was the capital’s centre for executions). The live soundtrack will feature an evocative blend of radical reinterpretations of peculiar and rare folk songs. Lisa Knapp is one of the UK’s finest interpreters of song, her new album Till April is Dead – A Garland of May’ has received rave reviews. The Dead Rat Orchestra’s music has been performed, installed and experienced across Europe, North America and the Middle East. Their soundtracks have featured on BBC Television and at the Sepentine and Tate Modern galleries. www.norwichartscentre.co.uk

Celebrate the Mods in Cambridge

X-Factor winner takes to the stage in Norwich

In 1964, a new phenomenon exploded onto the dingy British streets. It was the essence of all that was cool. It was Mod. Mods stuck two fingers up at the class-ridden society and its dull redundant culture. They were working-class free spirits who rode sexy streamlined Italian Vespas or Lambrettas. The sharpest Mod of all was known as a ‘FACE’. The Small Faces encapsulated all that is Mod, a unique blend of taste and testosterone, neat, clothes obsessed and streetwise. But these cult sophisticates shared another passion, their dedication to Rhythm ‘n’ Blues. This quintessentially British ‘Mod’ Musical celebrates the unique sound of the iconic ‘60s Mod band, The Small Faces. All or Nothing - The Musical comes to the Cambridge Corn Exchange from July 20th-22nd and promises an arsenal of brilliant hits like Whatcha Gonna Do About It, Lazy Sunday, Tin Soldier, Sha La La La Lee, Itchycoo Park and of course All Or Nothing. www.cambridgelivetrust.co.uk

South Shields singing star Joe McElderry won hearts as the winner of X-Factor in 2009, and showed his versatility by winning the second series of Popstar to Operastar in 2011, not to mention The Jump in 2014 which saw him transform into a competent ski jumper to take the winner’s laurels once more. Now the platinum-selling recording artist is set to tour the country following the release of his fifth studio album, Saturday Night at the Movies – and he arrives on stage at Norwich Theatre Royal on August 6th. The album includes iconic hits from film and theatre such as I’m Into Something Good, Love is All Around and Daydream Believer, as well as the hit single Gloria which was written by renowned songwriter and 10CC front man Graham Gouldman. www.theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk

Rapunzel, Rapunzel Let Down Your Hair Come and let your hair down this summer with a host of lively characters in King’s Lynn Corn Exchange’s brand new musical Rapunzel. Sophia is desperate for a baby of her own. Her husband Karl cannot bear to see her upset any longer and realising their lonely neighbour is their last chance he begs for Gothel's help. Gothel offers Karl a magic herb from her garden, but the price is high! Sophia and Karl will get the baby they long for but on Rapunzel's sixteenth birthday she must be returned to Gothel. Years later, trapped in a Tower, Rapunzel has grown into a beautiful and clever young woman but will she ever get out of the Tower and return home? Longing for adventure and freedom and with only Viktor the crow for company how will Rapunzel ever escape? Can Prince Freddie save the day or will Rapunzel never make it home? Based on the Brothers Grimm classic fairy tale and featuring brand new toe-tapping songs this musical is ideal for the whole family.
