the 28th. Artists often return each year with new work, plus there is always a group of new artists waiting in the wings to put forward their work. Exhibiting artists come from all over the county to display their work in a variety of genres including oils, watercolours, acrylics, collages and textiles. All pictures are for sale and there is a selection of unframed studies to buy. The work you see here is by Hazel Rush a botanical artist but for many years she was known for her landscapes. She has just completed a series of paintings for an R H S Exhibition at Malvern where she hopes to compete for a gold medal. Her studies are from the Opium Poppy.
Norwich Artists breaks Sales Record Norwich-based artist Will Teather has broken previous sales records for The Other Art Fair, London’s leading artist fair. The Fair recently confirmed that the artist's painting on a sphere of a bookshop achieved the highest sale price ever recorded at the Fair. It was sold to a private collector who owns works by some the world's leading artists. The sale was the first to go into five figures in the event's history. The artwork forms part of Will Teather's new series of Infinite Perspectives. 'Infinite perspectives is a project that explores new ground in the depiction of space, blurring the boundaries between painting and sculpture,' says Will Teather. 'These are three-dimensional paintings on globes and unusually formed canvases. The paintings employ an innovative type of inverted perspective, that gives a 360 degree view of a space - with both the perspective and the representation slyly shifting, depending on which point you look at them.' www.willteather.com

Artist Profile: Fiona Roberts
Growing up in the rugged north of England, artist Fiona Roberts learned her trade painting dramatic mountain landscapes. 'When I came to Norwich to do my art degree, I struggled at first with how different the Norfolk landscape was from what I was used to in Cumbria,' says Fiona. Because of this, during her time at Norwich School of Art & Design, Fiona drifted away from landscape painting, instead focusing on sculpture. 'As time passed, and I explored the area, I began to fall in love with the Norfolk landscape,' says Fiona. 'Inspiration came flooding back and I started painting landscapes again.' Fiona is particularly inspired by the North Norfolk coastline, especially the area around Stiffkey, Morston, Cley and Blakeney. 'It's so peaceful and the light is really beautiful,' says Fiona. 'I often take my easel out and paint outside. The big skies mean that you can see the weather and you feel completely part of it.' This immersion in emerging weather has led to Fiona's latest series of paintings entitled Threshholds.
'They're all about the small bit of time before the next bit of weather,' says Fiona. 'It's the light before a storm or the sunshine emerging from behind a raincloud. Fiona works from her studio in Aylsham and uses traditional methods to create contemporary pieces. 'I make my own paint using renaissance recipes, make my own gesso and instead of using modern canvases to paint on, I stretch calico onto boards,' says Fiona. Fiona currently has an exhibition of her work at Theatre Royal, Norwich running until the end of April. 'This is my first exhibition for a while,' says Fiona. 'After focusing on other projects, I'm now hoping to begin exhibiting again across Norfolk and Suffolk. If anyone is interested in exhibiting my work, I'd love to hear from them.'

Bringing History to Life Eastern Angles are back with a fascinating new production- Somewhere in England - telling the wartime story of what happened when the American GIs arrived in rural East Anglia. In May 1942, the first Eighth U.S. Army Air Force planes arrived. This moment in history, often referred to as ‘the friendly invasion’, had a huge impact on our cultural life. Polly Wiseman’s new play shows a hidden side to this shared history – a tale of segregation, friendships forged and then blown apart, and outsiders learning to live amongst the locals. This theatre production will tour across the East of England and includes site-specific performances at Thorpe Abbotts airfield in Norfolk and Debach Airfield in Suffolk.

winning Apex is a fantastic venue for all the family. We sent our writer Emma Clarke and her children, Saffron, 5, and Jacob, 4, to check out Sid's Show back in February. 'A visit to the Apex in Bury St Edmunds to visit Sid Sloane from CBeebies, proved to be a wonderful afternoon out with my two young children. We were welcomed by friendly, helpful staff, and with a little time to spare, we enjoyed a wander around this fabulous venue with its lovely airy atmosphere . Excited little children filled the theatre, which felt like just the right size for a family show. With colourful props, and a friendly host, a lively, and interactive show followed. Taken on an imaginary journey to find Sid’s socks and shoes, a cardboard box became a rocket ship, a fluffy dog caused great excitement, an underwater dive with a bubble machine took our imaginations further, ending with a visit to space where a cheerful alien knitted Sid a new pair of socks! The show was entertaining and interactive, and left the three of us smiling. The children also had the opportunity to meet Sid and have a chat about their favourite part, whilst excited parents captured photographs. We finished off the afternoon in the cafe where a fabulous selection of drinks, lunches and cakes are served. With its diverse programme of live music and events, many of which are family friendly, there really is something for everyone at The Apex’. March 2016 | 19

Buildings fit for great Art and Culture
The Arts Council invests in a wide range of artists and organisations in the East of England. We do this through regular investment in organisations such as Norfolk and Norwich Festival, Aldeburgh Music and Cambridge Junction. We also support a wide range of arts projects – such as Metal’s Harvest Festival in Peterborough or Frozen Light Theatre’s UK tour of The Forest. As part of our development role, the Arts Council also looks to support the long term resilience and sustainability of arts organisations. One of the ways we do that is by helping them to invest in their buildings through our Small Scale Capital programme. Organisations can apply to us for a wide range of projects through our small scale capital

As co-founder of Aardman Animations, David Sproxton has delighted an army of fans for the past forty years. Here he talks about animation, their latest project and what they're doing at Beccles Public Hall this Easter‌.
As schoolboys growing up in Surrey, David Sproxton and Peter Lord loved films. 'We both loved the idea of working in the film business but at the time there weren't many media courses around,' says David. 'Eventually we started working on a series of animations for the BBC series Vision On and realised how much we loved animation.' In 1972, David and Peter registered the name Aardman Animations, after a superhero character in one of their Vision On sequences. It was the start of an amazing journey. Using stop motion animation techniques, Aardman now employs 130 full-time model makers with another 100 employed in a freelance capacity. One such freelance model marker is Jim Parkyn. At the end of this month, he's coming to Beccles Public Hall & Theatre to lead a model-making workshop as part of their Easter Children's Film Festival in association with Aardman. It's a fantastic opportunity to learn from an Aardman expert modelmaker and to make your own Shaun the Sheep to take home!

Red Priest to perform in East Bergholt On Sunday March 13th, Baroque buccaneers Red Priest perform a fantastic family friendly programme of music from the baroque era, a treasure chest of rediscovered riches and stolen musical jewels! The programme - at St Mary's Church, East Bergholt - will feature music by the original 'red priest' Antonio Vivaldi, including selections from the Four Seasons and the Storm at Sea concerto. This is alongside a host of hits by baroque greats Handel, Bach and Telemann, and a few unsung heroes of the age, all performed by Red Priest's inimitable, high octane style! Swashbuckling recorder maestro Piers Adams leads proceedings, his arsenal of recorders of all shapes and sizes duelling with the strings and harpsichord of his Red Priest cohorts. There is a free car park behind the Red Lion pub in the centre of the village, just a short walk from the church. www.svam.org.uk

special concerts has been planned. These started in December when the group performed Rossini's Petite Mess Solonelle in the magnificent surroundings of St Andrews Church, Hingham. Their next concert, in St Andrew's Hall in Norwich on April 23rd, promises to be a spectacular evening. They will be performing Haydn's Creation - a large choral work for soloists, choir and orchestra - which tells the fabulous story of the Creation as told in Genesis. For those people that know there are two versions, you will be pleased to hear the group will be singing the English words! Musical director, Duncan Barlow, has been directing the Mid Norfolk Singers for nearly four years during which time they have performed in many different venues in Mid Norfolk and have sung traditional choral favourites such as the Messiah and
To boost the choir's funds the group are also holding a Come and Sing Day in Swaffham on March 12th when they will rehearse and then perform Faures Requiem all on the same day! Their summer concert will take place in Castle Acre Church on July 2nd and promises to provide a joyous programme to celebrate not only the 70th anniversary but also the Queen's 90th Birthday and other happy occasions! They will sing lighthearted songs from popular culture and are hoping to revisit some of the items sung in past years by the choir. The summer concert has traditionally been partly in aid of a charity and this summer they will be raising funds for Colkirk Pre-School. The final concert of 2016 will be a traditional Christmas Concert of carols and Christmas songs held at Swanton Morley Church on December 10th.

Food Review: Waffle House, Norwich I love a waffle….preferably toasted with maple syrup. But I'm the first to admit I was a little apprehensive at the thought of a savoury waffle as a main course. But when we arrived at The Waffle House on St Giles Street, Norwich, the toppings looked and sounded delicious. Garlic mushrooms with cheese sauce, Greek salad with feta, hummus and avocado, tuna salad and even beef bolognaise…..every option looked amazing. And then I saw the specials board! Fresh, smoked haddock with chorizo, braised cabbage and smoky paprika, free-range chicken and apricot curry and beef in a red wine, thyme and shallot sauce.
The Waffle House opened in Norwich a staggering 38 years ago in 1978. Ever since, it's been perfecting the art of the waffle. The flour used in their waffles is organically grown and stoneground, virtually every ingredient is sourced locally and they even make their own baked beans! In fact, the only thing that isn't made fresh on site is their ice cream! This hard work paid off in 2015 when The Waffle House won The Children's Choice Award at the Norfolk Food and Drink Awards. And its easy to see why. Not only was the food tasty and nutritious, the staff went out of their away to accommodate my children's needs including offering them a choice of large or small

waffle vanished with the first mouthful - it was delicious. My partner had garlic mushrooms with cheese sauce but opted for rice instead of a waffle. He was just as impressed as I was. My son had his waffle with grated cheese (he's fussy!) while my daughter went for a waffle topped with bolognaise and cheese.
For dessert we had pecan nut waffles with butterscotch sauce which was quite possibly the nicest dessert I've ever had! The kids loved their ice cream with a mini waffle on the side. All in all, I will be embracing the waffle as main course from this day on. Sarah Veness

'Old Man in Nepal' by Peter Brown
Capturing the Magic of Life In late 2013 two keen amateur photographers in Aldeburgh decided to try to form a local photography group with the remit to assist others who wished to improve their understanding of the working of digital cameras and how to use them more beneficially. From a small initial number, membership of the Aldeburgh Photography Group has increased to approximately 35 regulars with a meeting held on the third Wednesday of each month in the Community Centre at Aldeburgh, which has the benefits of a quality projector and a good audio system. By dint of hard work by the Programme Secretary a stimulating programme is in place for 2016 offering a mixture of visiting speakers (some of whom are well known professional photographers) or practical sessions handling and using cameras. The Group are blessed with the support of such local

Spotlight on.... Caroline Wiseman from The Lookout, Aldeburgh Q. Please tell us a little bit about your background in the art world? I have been a private dealer in modern and contemporary art for nearly 30 years based in London and for a few years also in New York. I have always specialised in works by modern masters such as Picasso and Matisse, and important British artists such as Terry Frost, Howard Hodgkin and David Hockney and our USP has been to show them in our home where clients can come, by appointment, day or evening in a very

the next few months?
Q.How did the Lookout come about? My partner and I were happily living in London and often came for the weekend to Aldeburgh. One morning in 2010, as I was about to go swimming in the sea, I noticed the South Lookout had a TO LET sign on it. While I swam I dreamt that the Lookout could be a place of creativity and inspiration for artists and people from all around Suffolk, Britain and indeed the world! We ended up buying the Lookout as well as the house on the seafront immediately opposite it, where we now live. We call this house 'The ArtHouse' and, following our tradition, we live among our works by major artists which are Porcelain Cascade
now joined with the brand new works by the emerging artists who have residencies in the Lookout. All are welcome to visit by appointment and it is a fantastic way for people to buy first class works of art by top artists which have been inspired by Suffolk.
Q. How has it progressed since the idea was conceived? I started off by contacting the Royal Academicians I knew such as Sir Peter Blake, Nigel Hall, Eileen Cooper, Alison Wilding. They were very encouraging and we began our series of artist residencies whereby the artist takes over the

Performance and live art work particularly well in the Lookout, and over Easter Shaun Caton is performing CULT HOUSE. Shaun is one of Britain's most extraordinary performance artists and has created a site specific event which will be captivating for adults and children alike. It is a free event and happens each day over Easter, all are welcome. Pebble Homage is a participatory art project for all the family which continues through March until mid May and coincides with Antony Gormley's sculpture on top of Aldeburgh's Martello Tower. Then throughout the summer and autumn we have a full schedule of exciting arts, performance and poetry events. Openings are usually on Saturdays although over the summer something will be happing in the Lookout most days. All are welcome but it is best to look on our website to check details.
Q. What, in your opinion, makes Aldeburgh so special? Perhaps because of Benjamin Britten, Aldeburgh has a history of artistic and cultural innovation which makes it, in my opinion, the most exciting seaside town in Britain.
