This month we’ve gone festival crazy! There are some top-class events in our region with something for everyone. Inside you can read a roundup of upcoming festivals with more detailed features on a select few. We’ve also got some great prizes on offer including tickets to see Rebecca Ferguson in Thetford Forest and the Opera Babes at the Southwold Festival, some beautiful art books and a delicious Moroccan meal. We were also lucky enough to chat to actress Rula Lenska about her role in the upcoming production of Pygmalion at Norwich Theatre Royal. Our local arts scene pages focus on the historic town of Wymondham this month - if you’ve never been, it’s well worth a visit. We’ve also launched two new sections - a kid’s page and a listings page. If you’d like your event included within our listings, please turn to p41 to find out how easily this can be done. On our kid’s page, we plan to review a local children’s production or event and to let you know what’s coming up in the region to keep your little ones entertained. Visual Arts News Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios May 24th - June 8th
2014 marks the 20th anniversary of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios. Norfolk’s annual festival of visual art that takes place all over the county. With the support of sponsors WEX Photographic more than 550 artists, in 272 venues, will be welcoming visitors into their studios to see their work and discover more about their creative processes. Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios has become one of the largest and most successful schemes of its kind in the UK, an annual celebration of the county’s vibrant visual arts scene Norfolk and Norwich Open Studios - Artist Blacksmith Nigel Barnett. with artists working in a diverse range of art forms, encompassing painted landscapes, textiles, jewellery, metal-forged sculptures and wood turning. During the 2013 event over 33,000 people visited artists’ studios. There are also 16 Norfolk schools taking part this year, which giving a glimpse of the exceptional talent of children and young people in Norfolk. Around the county many participants group together to create ‘Art Trails’ allowing art lovers to easily visit a selection of artists exhibiting nearby to each other. www.nnopenstudios.org.uk
Holt Festival Art Prize 2014 Entry Open!
Entry is now open for this year’s prestigious Holt Festival Art Prize. The competition is open to artists everywhere. In the past two years artists from as far afield as Scotland and Cornwall have entered. There is a cash prize of £1,500 and the winning artwork will be exhibited at Norwich’s prestigious Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in the autumn. The deadline for entries is midnight Saturday June 7th. Judges will select a shortlist of 2030 that will be exhibited at the Nicholson Gallery, Holt from July 20-27th. The winner will be announced at a private view on July 19th. The exhibition is part of the Holt Festival Art Trail that also takes in 13 other galleries and exhibition spaces around the town. Dee Nickerson Exhibition
The Cork Brick Gallery in Bungay is holding an exhibition of new paintings by the talented Dee Nickerson until May 31st. Dee has been exhibiting at the Cork Brick for over 10 years and each new exhibition is greeted with excited anticipation to see how Dee’s insight into the world around her has transpired onto canvas. This new exhibition will not fail to delight. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11am-5pm. www.corkbrickgallery.co.uk

Over four weekends in June this year, around 130 Suffolk artists will be opening their doors to the public for Suffolk Open Studios. Spanning a huge range of art including oils, watercolours, acrylics, photography, textiles, ceramics, jewellery, glassware, sculpture, 2D and 3D mixed media, printmaking, mosaics and much more, the Open Studios event grows bigger each year. As Suffolk Open Studios covers such a large area, visitors are encouraged to use the website - and the paper directory - in advance to check routes, opening hours and to make a day of it. In the lead up to Open Studios, some artists will be participating in Art About Town, whereby they collaborate with friendly local shops, cafes and restaurants to exhibit pieces to help promote their work. Assembly House - Print Show
Lino-cuts and screen-prints from established UK artists will be on show at the Noverre Gallery from May 10th to June 28th. There is an open day on May 10th where a number of the participating artists will be demonstrating their skills. Londonbased artist Eliza Southwood will be showing off her screenprinting process and there will also be a talk about dry-point printing from Master Printer Richard Spare. The Print Show 2014 will be open from 9am to 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday and entry is free. Cards, wrapping paper, jewellery, textiles and ceramics will also be on sale. www.noverregallery.co.uk
Chloe Mandy - The Necessary Angel
From May 23rd to June 8th, Salthouse Church is the home for a stunning exhibition from Sheringham-based artist Chloe Mandy. Upon moving to Norfolk 15 years ago, Mandy began to paint landscapes outdoors. Travelling with all her materials, she completes a painting in a single session. ‘With her paintings she has privileged both the spectacular and mundane of rural Norfolk and we recognise the artists’ conviction that these environments are worthy of our close attention,’ says Amanda Getiner, Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts. www.chloemandyart.com

Antingham Arts Art & Sculpture Exhibition - Celebrating the Summer Solstice
Norfolk artist Mike Toll is opening his studio and the gardens of his home in Antingham, North Walsham in May and June with a fantastic art and sculpture exhibition to celebrate the summer solstice. Mike has exhibited paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and sculpture since 1956 in a wide variety of locations in this country and abroad. With one man shows in Norwich, Ipswich, Great Yarmouth, Bungay, Lowestoft, Long Stratton, Hanover, Paderborn and Hamlin in Germany and group shows across the UK and in Switzerland, Germany and France. His work can be found in public and private collections in the UK, North and South America, Australia, Holland, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Canada, Switzerland. ‘My work is about the effect of time on and in the landscape,’ says Mike. ‘The evocation of the seasons and my close encounters with them. The buildings, the objects both man-made and natural, the tactile quality of water and the earth moved and formed by the elements over time. I am also excited by the marks left in the landscape by man, such as the ploughed field, foot marks in the sand, Ancient stone circles or the machine-cut hedge. I use colour like a major or minor key in music suggesting and reflecting the mood of my subject matter.’ Alongside his own work, this May and June, Mike has 9 artists showcasing a diverse selection of artwork in the studio. He has also assembled 30 sculptors who will be

‘I paint images of people, some who have been in my dream, or memories from my childhood, or maybe people walking along the Suffolk coast or just an idea floating in the ether. Being able to paint in my own style gives me a freedom of expression and because I don’t feel tied to convention, I have developed a way of working that is unselfconscious. I have an enthusiasm to paint, it gives me a huge sense of joy and satisfaction to create. Peter is a member of the Norwich Twenty Group which is celebrating its 70th birthday. ‘The East Anglian coast forms the subject base for my painting. There is a mystery and an appeal to the transcendant. It seems to have an aura of a vanitas, the vanity of earthly pleasures. visual arts Artist Profile Nicola Slattery Back in our March Issue we featured Norfolk artist Nicola Slattery and her solo exhibition at Mandell’s Gallery, Norwich. Here we chat to Nicola in more detail about her work, achievements and what the future holds. As part of the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios taking place in May and June(see below) Nicola will be opening her home and studio. ‘It’s a brilliant opportunity for visitors to come and see how how I work and view some of my most recent paintings and prints,’ says Nicola. She is also offering something called ‘ Cream Teas and Violins’ which her daughters are organising in the garden and sounds like a great way to spend a summer’s day. When we spoke last, Nicola had just had a painting ‘ A House for Me’ accepted for the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) annual open exhibition. ‘I was thrilled when the painting won the ‘Alfred Daniels Award,’ says Nicola. ‘It was a recognition of the particular narrative way I work which was fantastic.’ In addition to the RBA, Nicola’s work has been selected for exhibition by the New English Art Club, the Royal Academy Summer show and galleries across the country. A major exhibition of her paintings is planned at the prestigious Fosse gallery in Stow-on-the-Wold for May 2015. ‘The Fosse shows the work of many Royal Academicians and other very talented artists. I feel it is a great honour to have my work featured at this very special gallery,’ says Nicola. Nicola also teaches a number of weekend art courses. The next one ‘Art from Imagination’ takes place in July and is open to all ability levels,including beginners. Other art weekends include ‘Printmaking’ and ‘Painting with Acrylics’. ‘Painting is a solitary activity, so I really enjoy teaching the courses,’ says Nicola. ‘It’s good to meet other people interested in art, and share ideas.’ Nicola occasionally works to commission. Past projects include large prints for JD Wetherspoons pub ‘The Troll Cart’ in Great Yarmouth, a painting of ‘ Fame’ for an international PR consultancy, images for greetings cards for WH Smith and works for individuals. ‘Imagination is at the core of my approach to art,’ says Nicola. ‘And for me art should feed the imagination.’ Don’t let your imagination miss out. Rhonda Whitehead Stour Valley Artists
Rhonda Whitehead’s career began in the seventies after leaving the Royal College of Art. Her first solo exhibition was at the Commonwealth Institute Gallery, London in 1975. Since then she has had a further thirty solo exhibitions in the UK and abroad. Her last solo exhibition in Cambridge was at New Hall in 2010 following a solo exhibition at Kings Arts Centre in 2009 and a solo exhibition at The Clare Hall Gallery in 2008. Her painting ‘Venice Ochre’ won first prize in 2006 at the Byard Open exhibition, Cambridge. The new and recent paintings and works on paper on exhibition, in mixed media and, oil capture and record the surface loss, imperfections and characteristics of erosion and time on man made surfaces. As one critic said; ‘The action of nature on the built landscape recall the eroded surfaces of buildings in recent work; Whitehead’s painterly response awakens our interest in all manner of physical and climatic exchanges we read on the surfaces of buildings. It is as if the artist were capturing the mind that exists in all matter.’ Monica Petzal, Marina Vaizey, Sarah Kent, William Packer, Valdemar Januszczak, Guy Brett, Margaret Garlake to mention a few, have all written enthusiastically about her work.

In June the Stour Valley Artists are making a welcome return to Bury St Edmunds after a two year absence with a mixed show of contemporary paintings, drawings, prints and ceramics at The Edmund Gallery. Marnie Deakins paints, and works in ceramics. Light, and a sense of narrative in the landscape is reflected in her work. Belinda King worked as a print maker before returning to painting. Her colourful landscapes are often based on quick pencil sketches without much detail, leaving her to interpret them as she wishes. Pauline Stainer came to painting late. She is primarily a poet, with eight collections published by Bloodaxe. She works mainly in watercolour but also uses mixed media. Pamela Yeend trained in London in the 1980s as a painter and printmaker. Her work is influenced by direct experience as well as being a response to personal or current issues. All four women have had their work included in many group shows, in the UK and in Europe, and have held solo exhibitions in the UK. The current exhibition is open every day from June 6th-12th from 11am-7pm at The Edmund Gallery in Bury St Edmunds IP33 1LS, with late night opening on Friday from 7-9pm.

visual arts Alison Wagstaffe: Open studio 2014 Norfolk artist Alison Wagstaffe opens the door of her studio to the public this May/ June. ‘Many people are fascinated by the idea of the artist’s studio and this gives them the opportunity to peep inside, see what’s going on and dream a few dreams of their own!’ From my point of view it’s lovely to meet the people who buy my pictures, making art is a pretty solitary business- so having visitors is refreshing and fun. On the whole my pictures usually have a kind of a story behind themreal or imagined, and I don’t mind other peoples’ interpretations of them at all! My picture ‘Letting Go’ was made to celebrate the passing of a close friend- other people see other things in this image-fine by me! My interest is in making things that add to the beauty of life - to give a little pause, an unworldly moment - and I hope, delight! The Burnham Art Trail is celebrating its tenth year and has planned some special events in honour of their anniversary. The trail offers a great opportunity to explore this beautiful town and enjoy its wealth of creative talent. The artists represented either live, work or have strong links with Burnham and the Dengie Peninsula. Their work covers a broad spectrum including fine art painting, sculpture, photography, jewellery, textiles, printmaking and woodturning. Most artworks are available to purchase. They are pleased to announce the following artist demonstrations this year. Fianne Stanford will be opening her purpose-built printing studio, 85 High Street, on June 21st-22nd, 12-4pm where you can watch her at work at her printing press. John Green will demonstrate his watercolour techniques at his studio, 13 Park Road, on 23rd, 25th and 27th June, from 2pm to 4pm. Jean Webber will be demonstrating her oil painting techniques in her garden and studio, 12 Ramblers Way. On both weekends she will be joined by Liz Potter painting in watercolour and Martin Hipsey demonstrating his sculpting techniques. Akiko Fujikawa will be teaching the art of Japanese gift wrapping at Chapel Studio. There will be three workshops a day from 27th - 30th June - 10.30am, 1pm, 3.30pm, £12 including all materials. To book a place call Akiko on 01621 783730 after 10th June. Dotted around the trail and featuring copies of famous paintings will be fun booths in which you can have your photo taken. Pick up a pen and draw a portrait of yourself, your friends, your family and stick it on the wall. Watch the artwork grow throughout the week and see the faces of the people who have visited the Art Trail. All pens and post-it notes will be supplied. Venue No 26: Café 41. As well as artists’ exhibits, Burnham Museum also features a digital slide show of the artists’ work and “Art Trail Unframed” which offers the opportunity to purchase their original cards and unframed work. “Secret Postcards” (also at the museum) comprises original, postcard-sized artworks created and donated by all of our 2014 artists. Each artwork is for sale by sealed bid which you can place in one of the envelopes provided. Successful bidders will be notified by Saturday 5th July. One hundred per cent of your money goes to future funding. This years’ community project in conjunction with local schools and Abellio Greater Anglia, Essex and South Suffolk Community Rail Partnership is brightening up the mostly disused Burnham-on Crouch railway station building. visual arts Paintopia Face & Body Painting Festival 2014
Little did mum of two Jennie Roberts realise the international acclaim her body painting festival Paintopia would attract when she started it just three years ago. In 2011 Jennie simply wanted to provide a forum for local and possibly nationwide body artists to come together to share their skills and appreciate the talents of others in the profession. The initial festival was a resounding success. ‘At the end of the festival, delegates were putting cash in my hands to book their place in 2012. I was astounded!’ says Jennie. The original festival has grown fivefold in just 3 years - attracting 40 delegates in 2011- this year almost 200 from all over the world will be attending when the festival starts on Friday, May 9th at Dunston Hall. One global celebrity of the industry attending is Pashur House. Pashur, known throughout the world as “Picasso of Body Painting”, due to his legendary talent, continues to create unparalleled works of art and inspire artists around the globe. He will be returning this year to run workshops for existing body artists to further Artist Jenny Marquis Model Gracie improve their skills. In addition to Pashur, the 2013 World Bodypainting and Image Rhonda Perfitt Facepainting Champion Matteo Arfanotti will be in Norwich holding workshops alongside another global star, Nick Wolfe. Water - an element which evokes special emotion in the East A group of female printmakers from Nanjing, China will be exhibiting their traditional Chinese multiblock woodcuts using water based inks at St Barnabas Gallery, in Cambridge from June 14th-28th, 2014. The invention of multi-block printing (Dou Ban) enriched the possibilities of creative printmaking in Nanjing during the 15th century, Shi Zhu (Ten Bamboos) Studio was a successful Nanjing workshop in it’s day. Water is one of the many elements which evokes special emotion in the eastern artists. It is a necessary part of their practice and it is significant that they use water in their printmaking - this satisfies their tradition and allows a painterly feel to their work, which expresses everyday life in their own perspective. Among the artists, Chunhua Yang is the professor and has tutored, Wufeng Yu, Xiaoying Zhang, Jiayue Yang, Zhenyi Xia, Zhiqian Zhao, Wenjun Huang, Heng Long, they all studied in ‘Nanjing printmaking institute’. If you’re in Cambridge this month, there’s really only one place to go for lunch - the Hunt & Darton pop-up cafe. Even if you’re not there anyway, it’s worth a special trip. From May 3rd-31st, the Hunt & Darton cafe is offering a unique experience at 36 Bridge Street (10am-5pm closed Monday and Tuesday) in the city centre. Jenny Hunt & Holly Darton - fine art graduates from Central Saint Martins - are the creators of the award-winning, popup interactive performance/installation and fully-functioning café where food, service and business are the art with guest waiters, themed days and the sensational signature dish, the roast dinner sandwich. The Cafe takes over empty shops, often working with council initiatives and art centres to benefit and increase artistic activity within the area. The alternative service from Hunt & Darton themselves (often wearing their iconic pineapple outfits and hats) comprises deadpan style and theme days such as ‘youdo-it-day’ where customers are encouraged to serve each other. Hunt & Darton also commission local artists to wait on the tables and create unique performances as they serve. First commissioned by Live Art Collective East for the Cultural Olympiad the Cafe popped up in Cambridge City Centre, at the Edinburgh Fringe, in Clapton, Hackney and recently in Brighton. Now, thanks to popular demand, the cafe is on tour visiting seven location over two years. Food on offer includes cakes (Battenberg!), light lunches and Hunt & Darton’s signature dish; the roast dinner sandwich. This is serious business, prepare for appetites to be satisfied in more ways than one! Guest waiters include artists - Brian Lobel, Figs in Wigs, Clerke and Joy and Scottee.

Artistic Excellence – Lowestoft College If you have a passion for creativity that you want to develop, why not think about joining UCS Lowestoft’s BA (Hons) Design course? The course embraces the four disciplines of ceramics, graphics, textiles and three dimensional design. Lessons take place in a friendly and supportive environment and you will be able to develop skills in the four disciplines of ceramics, graphics, textiles and three-dimensional design before specialising in your final year. Students from the course have a history of gaining meaningful employment as well as a strong record of winning national competitions. This year was no exception with three gaining acclaim in the prestigious Bradford Textiles Society Awards. The awards attract entries from all over the country and run every year to recognise the creativity of tomorrow’s designers and artists and, since 2005, a total of 14 students from UCS Lowestoft have either been placed first, second or third in a category or gained a commendation for their entry. Final year student Mary-May Cuthbert won the first prize in the Knitted Fabric for Accessories for Fashion or Interiors category for her bolster cushion made from a knitted Shetland Yarn, inspired by reflections. Cloe Sutcliffe, also in the third year of the course, and Hilary Woolf, both received commendations for their entries. education Elephant Parade: Norwich
If you’ve been to Norwich during April, we’re sure you’ve spotted one of the many beautifully-painted elephants in Chapelfield Shopping Centre. In July last year, the Elephant Parade launched its first ever national tour covering 14 venues over the course of a year. From April 7th 2014, Norwich became their home for four weeks. Elephant Parade is the world’s largest open air art exhibition of decorated elephant statues that seeks to raise public awareness and support for Asian elephant consecration. The tour is being presented by intu - the owner and manager of many of the UK’s leading shopping centres, including Chapelfield in Norwich. For the first time, and as part of the parade, intu is running a national schools programme. In Norwich, seven schools in the region had their design chosen to decorate seven half-size elephants. The schools were Reepham Primary School, Hewett School in Norwich, Smithdon High School in Hunstanton, Great Yarmouth Colllege, Roydon Primary School, Forncett CEVA Primary School and Sparhawk Infant & Nursery School. Fairy Tales from Poland A beautiful book for children is being launched this month. Fairy Tales from Poland depicts seven traditional stories that are well-known and loved in Poland. Suitable for children aged 4-9, the characters are lively and likeable and the heroes, with their goodness and affinity with nature, battle evil forces resolutely. The book is illustrated with paper cut illustrations inspired by traditional Polish folk art - they are clear, bright and immediate, full of animals and birds that follow the tales with interest. The author - Elisabeth Kozmian - has always had a passion for primitive and folk cultures and a love of the natural world. This is very evident in her original and imaginative art and writing. ‘I love beautiful myths, legends and old stories, and have been learning about rural traditions in East Anglia where my family and I have been living for 25 years,’ says Elisabeth. ‘We grow potatoes and leeks just like the small eco farmers in Poland and we hold exhibitions of images of the natural world together with artist friends.’ Born in Poland, Elisabeth and her family now live in Norfolk. She regularly teaches and exhibits at the Wickhampton Farm Barn - a small arts association that hosts exhibitions and workshops. For those interested in her work and book, Elisabeth is hosting an open studio event at the Barn over three long weekends - May 30th-June 1st, June 13th-15th and June 20th-22nd. The brightly coloured and upbeat views of Norfolk produced by Sheringham-based artist Brian Lewis will be familiar to many, but a new book brings together for the first time 20 years of his optimistic take on the North coast. Brian decided to ‘paint Norfolk’ in the early 1990s, bringing his Royal Academy-honed artistic skills to bear on Walsingham and Wells-next-the-Sea. His early work struggled to find an audience, in spite of its fine detail and quirky appeal. Buyers wanted the sun to shine and the sky to be blue, resulting in a vast portfolio of popular locations featuring his ‘Lowrey-esque’ figures, running dogs and stylised birds. Becoming an overnight success may have taken decades, but Brian has never looked back. The striking thing about ‘Blue Skies and Boat Trips’, written by Norfolk author Alan Marshall and published by Broads-based Mascot Media, is the way in which Brian has married his considerable painting skills with a sense of fun to create so many extraordinary images of Norfolk and beyond. His work, as familiar in the county as the scenes he paints, has hidden depths. Take time to look carefully at even the most frivolous of pictures and you will be surprised by the detail he includes and the accuracy of his portrayal of familiar buildings, boats, beaches or birds. His love for the county, its landscapes and architecture cries out from every painting. Great care is taken over everything from Norfolk’s landmarks to its lifeboats and even wildlife. Only the people tend to be deliberately anonymous and generic, unless, of course, a client wants them to be recognisable. This affable artist is clearly comfortable with his populist style and reputation for whimsical interpretations of familiar places. He communicates successfully with his public through a portfolio of pictures designed to raise a smile. The prints produced from his acrylic originals represent affordable art for the masses. The 165 different images reproduced in the book represent a small part of an epic portfolio created over two decades. Like a portable exhibition, this rainbow-hued volume acts as a memorable guide to the North Norfolk coast, Norwich and various inland towns. As well as the pictures, there are equally colourful recollections and anecdotes provided by Brian himself, whose past and present establish him as one of Norfolk’s more multi-hued characters. ‘Blue Skies and Boat Trips’ is a hardback of 156 pages, devoted to the Norfolk of Brain Lewis. Westacre Theatre Bursary Award
Westacre Theatre are launching their Bursary Award Scheme for the 9th year running. This scheme, fully supported by the theatre’s two patrons Stephen Fry and Antony Gormley, offers young drama / performing arts undergraduates the chance to spend the summer working at Westacre Theatre. The students get the practical experience that is so valuable to young performers and actors - and they get paid for it! The Awards have a ‘Norfolk’ feel as the applicants can be studying anywhere in the country but must have a home-base in the Norfolk area. Previous Bursary students have gone on to work in regional theatre, touring companies and the West End. Some have also worked in film, television and radio. The Time Machine
Cambridge-based Robert Lloyd Parry of Nunkie Theatre is bringing his spectacular stage adaptation of HG Wells’ novella The Time Machine to Cambridge as part of a three month national tour. The show performs for 2 nights at The Mumford Theatre on May 23rd-24th. The Time Machine is considered by many to be the first true science fiction novel, and certainly the first to consider time travel as a viable subject for fiction. Theatre company New Adventures - run by world-renowned choreographer Matthew Bourneis bringing its version of William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies to Norwich from November 19th22nd. The company is looking to recruit roughly 20 young people aged 10 to 25 to join the cast on stage. Free dance workshops - no previous experience necessary - are being held to give potential performers an introduction to the show. The next one takes place at The Garage, Norwich on May 27th. Following the workshops, auditions will take place in September followed by an intensive rehearsal period for those who are successful. Coffee and a Chat Leading lady and star of stage and screen Rula Lenska talks to ARTSeast editor Sarah Veness about her latest role in Pygmalion.
theatre & film This June a brand new production of Pygmalion heads to Norwich with an all-star cast. Rula Lenska is playing the part of Mrs. Higgins, the mother of Professor Higgins. The role is quite different from the parts she’s previously been used to. ‘It’s a lovely character part and I’m relishing it,’ says Rula. ‘She’s a woman who knows her own mind and I’d guess that she’s a supporter of the rights of women. She has impeccable manners and is something of a grande dame. She certainly expects to be listened to.’ Manners are something that were instilled in Rula from a very young age. Although she was born in the UK, Rula’s parents - a Count and Countess were members of the Polish aristocracy. ‘I was brought up with the knowledge of my background and the importance of manners and respect,’ she says. In light of her aristocratic background, what did her parents make of her career choice. ‘They weren’t very happy about it,’ says Rula. ‘My father wanted me to get a job at the United Nations but neither of them thought that acting was a suitable career choice for me. I did as they wanted. I finished school, I sat my A-Levels, I did a secretarial course. But then I still applied for drama school and slowly my parents became accustomed to how I earned my living.’ Since that training, Rula has dazzled on both stage and screen in a wide variety of roles. Mrs Higgins is a departure from her usually more glamorous roles. ‘I can still pull it out of the hat when required,’ she says. ‘But as you get older, you become much less concerned with what people think and as a result, I’m much more at peace.’ Rula is certainly enjoying her time in Pygmalion. The tour - which has received rave reviews - started midFebruary and ends in Norwich. ‘It’s a gorgeous production,’ says Rula. ‘The cast - including Alistair McGowan who plays Professor Higgins - are an absolute delight. It’s one of those shows where every box is ticked.’ Rula will be staying in the countryside outside Norwich and is looking forward to exploring the area. ‘I performed at the Theatre Royal a few years back in The Vagina Monologues and I’m looking forward to getting out, seeing the sights and - hopefully - enjoying the sunshine,’ says Rula. One thing is clear. If Rula’s enjoyment at her part is anything to go by, then Pygmalion will be an unmissable show. Pygmalion is at Norwich Theatre Royal from June 16th-21st. A Taste of Honey Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds
Shelagh Delaney’s classic 1950s kitchen-sink drama A Taste of Honey will be visiting the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds from June 3rd-7th. Described by The Stage as having “an undoubted sense of romance” and as “groundbreaking” by The Guardian, this is a production not to be missed. Salford 1959, and 17-year-old Jo is desperate to break free from her vulgar, wayward and man-hunting mother, Helen. Resilient and feisty, Jo’s instinct for survival and happiness leads her to a taste of honey when she falls in love with Jimmy, a black Sailor on shore leave. Abandoned by her Mother and left to cope on her own, Jo’s courage is tested yet again when Jimmy returns to sea, and she discovers she’s pregnant. Defiant in the face of convention, Jo moves in with her friend Geoffrey, a young Art student, who assumes the role of surrogate father to her unborn child. As their relationship deepens, Jo discovers that her independent spirit is both her torment and her salvation. One of the most influential plays of its generation, A Taste of Honey was written when Shelagh Delaney was only 18. It burst onto the stage in 1961 in a production that took the West End by storm. Part of the post-war kitchen sink movement, the play later became a classic of British cinema.
In the role of Jo will be actress Rebecca Ryan who is best known for her roles as Debbie Gallagher in the Channel 4 hit TV series Shameless and Vicki McDonald in the BBC show Waterloo Road.

Review: Charlie & Lola Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds
Walking into Theatre Royal Bury with a five-year-old and a threeyear-old - and 20 minutes to kill - I don’t know who was more pleased to discover an excellent dressing up corner for the kids to rummage in while they were waiting. What a brilliant idea! Time flew by until it was time to grab a programme (a very reasonable £1.50 each) and head to our seats. We had great seats and the booster cushions on offer meant that even Elsie - my youngest could see really well. As the lights went down, I crossed my fingers. Charlie & Lola are big news in our household and I was praying the show wouldn’t disappoint. I needn’t have worried. From the opening seconds my two were hooked. The cast of four actors - from Watershed Productions - were magical as they worked the puppets and told the story of everyone’s favourite brother and sister. I’ve always loved the way that Lola disappears into her own imagination in the books and this production was fantastic at bringing that to life. Dancing dogs, imaginary friends, magic shows, tigers drinking pink milk……everything was perfect. There was an interval after half an hour which was great as it gave us a chance to nip to the loo and grab an ice cream. All in all, the show - and the theatre itself - were great. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back with the kids next time I spot something I think they’ll like.

Upcoming Folk Band Madison Violet at Culford
Canadian award-winning duo Madison Violet (Brenley MacEachern and Lisa MacIsaac) return to the UK and, as part of their nationwide tour, are coming to the beautiful Culford Hall near Bury St Edmunds on Saturday May 17th. Fairport Convention to rock Open, Norwich
Legendary folk-rock outfit Fairport Convention will welcome the return of longest-serving member Dave Pegg on bass guitar when the band visits Norwich during its UK spring tour. Dave will take the stage with fellow bandmembers Simon Nicol (vocals, guitar), Ric Sanders (violin), Chris Leslie (mandolin, fiddle, vocals) and Gerry Conway (percussion) at Open on June 4th. Earlier in the year, Dave’s son Matt had to stand in as bassist when Pegg senior badly injured his hand in a kitchen accident. ‘In January, I severed a tendon in the first finger of my left hand while I was emptying the dishwasher,’ Dave recalls. ‘My hand was in a splint for six weeks so I couldn’t play bass or mandolin. The swinging sixties are brought to life on June 8th at St Andrews Hall, Norwich when Carnaby Street - The Concert hits town. J S Bach: Mass in B Minor
Arguably, the greatest religious work from the Baroque period, this spectacular work was compiled in Bach’s old age from works written over the previous 40 years. Over the summer the Forestry Commission runs Forest Live - seven unique concerts in seven amazing forest locations across the country. Every June-July, an eclectic mix of acts perform. Woodland clearings are temporarily transformed into a concert arena creating a safe and relaxed atmosphere for gig-goers. Forest Live is an independent programme organised by the Forestry Commission bringing music to new audiences without commercial branding or sponsorship. Income generated from ticket sales is spent on improving the forests for both people and wildlife. For several hundred years Harleston held an annual Fair of St John in late June, which may have had its origins in ancient midsummer revels. A noisy combination of commerce and celebration it was a time of thanksgiving for the arrival of summer, celebrated with friends, neighbours and visitors. On Sunday June 15th this historic event is being reconfigured for the 21st century with the first HARLESTON ANTIQUES & VINTAGE STREET MARKET taking over the centre of town between 9.30am and 4pm. Over 40 stalls, street musicians and entertainments, food stalls including wood-fired pizzas, pulled pork, the Duck Truck’s crispy duck wraps and Flying Chef’s traditional chargrilled sausages, will provide a rich offering of attractions for local people and visitors. Many shops and businesses will be opening up specially and it will be a unique way for families to celebrate Father’s Day. In the evening, once stalls have been cleared away, a MIDSUMMER STREET PARTY will take over the Market Place with 3-hours of free music entertainment (6 – 9pm). With the centre of town closed to traffic, JD Young’s setting out continentalstyle tables and chairs in the Market Place, an outdoor music stage and array of delicious street food on offer organisers hope that this will be a night to remember for the whole community. Harleston and Waveney Art Trail
Now in its 10th year, The Harleston and Waveney Art Trail was set up by a group of professional artists on the Norfolk/ Suffolk border. This year 30 artists will be opening their studios for the three days of the bank holiday weekend May 24th-26th and the weekend of May 31st-June 1st. The work of members covers a wide range of styles and media - from strictly figurative and representational to abstract and textural. The East of England boasts a wide variety of festivals, including Norfolk and Norwich Festival, Aldeburgh Festival and PULSE. Each of them brings together a wonderful mix of artists, artforms and audiences to celebrate and enjoy a wealth of Great art and culture. Festivals provide an important platform for emerging and established local and regional talent to showcase their work alongside some of the best known artists, nationally and internationally. These events also mean that audiences can engage with new talent and enjoy work that they may not typically go to see – such as a poetry slam or a dance performance. Great art and culture sit at the centre of these festivals – giving everyone the chance to find something new and inspiring – but the positive impact that they create goes far beyond, cementing their intrinsic value to the region, and the country as a whole. For example, in 2013 Norfolk and Norwich Festival generated £2.3 million for the local economy and also created 20 full-time and 85 part time jobs. These figures highlight just some of the compelling reasons why festivals are such an important part of England’s arts and cultural provision – bringing artists and audiences together in a celebration of artistic excellence. Here is a brief look ahead at some of the highlights of what is happening in the coming months in the East of England.

Metal’s Village Green returns to Chalkwell Park on Saturday 12 July, from 11am through to 10pm. Along with a wealth of musical talent, the festival will feature a guest appearance from the world-renowned Philadelphia Boys Choir; an exciting exchange with four visual artists from Shanghai; a wide range of comedy, cabaret, live art, literature, film and a host of extraordinary outdoor arts, installations, workshops and performances.

Opera Babes
Southwold is quite rightly famous for its lighthouse, beautiful town, beach huts, Adnams Brewery and tasty fish and chips. But now it has another claim to fame that looks set to establish itself firmly on the arts scene with its inaugural outing - the Southwold Arts Festival. The brainchild of a small group of local people, the Festival will run from June 28th to July 5th. The main venue will be St Edmunds Hall although other town centre venues will also be used including St Edmunds Church. This exciting new festival will combine a broad mix of music, art and theatre to cater for all tastes.
Highlights include: The internationally renowned ‘Opera Babes’, will perform at St Edmunds Church on June 28th. On Sunday 29th, there will be a folk concert at St Edmunds Hall featuring, Vin Garbutt, the ‘Teeside Troubadour’ and winner of the BBC Folk Award Best - Live Act, supported by the popular John Ward Band. Throughout the week there will be theatre productions, poetry readings and an evening with broadcaster and political journalist Andrew Marr who will talk about his life and sign copies of his recent book: ‘A Short Book About Drawing’. There will be a range of afternoon events including a performance by the well known writer and broadcaster Janet Gershlick who has a home in Southwold and there will be a musical review celebrating the life of Noel Coward from the ‘Must Close Saturday’ Company which includes Helen McDermott, best remembered for her long career with Anglia Television. The highly respected poet George Szirtes will also be providing a talk and answering questions. The highly regarded ‘Common Ground Theatre Company’ will bring their premiere production of ‘Mary Shelley and the Curse of Frankenstein’ to the Festival and local pianist and composer Nathan Williamson will provide a diverse programme, ranging from two of Beethoven’s most popular Sonatas to the first performance of one of his own compositions. Building on the success of the Art Exhibition last year, the 2014 exhibition will include some of the most memorable images of the town. The organisers have managed to secure some important pictures including some of the best original paintings by local artists Katherine Hamilton and Andrew Marr Mary Gundry and also rare and important pictures by John Piper, Tessa Newcomb and Henry Davy. Two of the highlights of the Festival will be concerts by the classical violinist Tasmin Little on July 2nd and the finale concert July 5th hosted by Digby Fairweather’s Half Dozen with blues singer Val Wiseman. A Wife’s Tale: Violet, Lady Munnings Accomplished horsewoman, Violet McBride first came to the attention of British artist, Sir Alfred Munnings, at the Richmond Horse Show in 1919. He said of her: ‘Here was a subject to paint – a good looking woman on horseback, silk hat and gardenia – all complete.’ Violet first visited Dedham to celebrate Alfred’s first Christmas at Castle House along with his other friends including Laura and Harold Knight. After Violet married Alfred in 1920, she undertook the running of all the domestic elements of his life and saw it as her role to free him from the mundane activities of everyday life to give him the freedom to paint. Violet’s greatest work was done following Sir Alfred’s death in 1959 by establishing the Castle House Trust and it was her who first opened their home to an enthusiastic public in 1961. This year, The Munnings Collection at Castle House is celebrating the life of Violet, Lady Munnings with a special exhibition of paintings, photographs, film and personal effects. www.siralfredmunnings.co.uk

The Tide Mill Living Museum For over 800 years, people have worked at Woodbridge Tide Mill to harness the green energy from the tides to drive a mill producing flour and animal feed. History tells us that Woodbridge was one of the first tide mills in the country and unquestionably the last one working. Today you can visit the mill and learn all about the milling process. There’s loads to see including interactive models, audio stations, videos, display panel, life size cut-outs of the miller’s family and cats and even a children’s corner and dressing up box. On milling days, you can even watch the Miller control the machinery to produce flour. Near the top of the mill, the wonderful views across the River Deben are not to be missed whatever the state of the tide. Outside, take the innovative boardwalk for close up views of the English oak waterwheel and learn about the birds that call the River Deben home. It’s a fantastic day out for all the family.
The Mill’s History
The earliest record of a tide mill on this site by the River Deben is in 1170. It was owned by the Augustinian Priors for roughly 350 years until Henry VIII confiscated it. For the next 28 years it was in royal ownership. Elizabeth I sold it to Thomas Seckford whose family
owned it for over 100 years, followed by several private owners. In 1793 the present mill was built on the site of earlier ones. By the 1950s it had become the last working tide mill in the country, but in 1957 finally closed. It was saved in 1968, restored and open to the public in 1973. Recently, further protection and restoration work has brought it back into use as a fully working tide mill as well as being a fascinating and remarkable living example of our industrial and cultural heritage. local arts scene Wymondham - Majestic Market Town This historic market town, just under 10 miles from Norwich, has a thriving arts scene complete with its own festival, orchestra, heritage centre and arts centre. The town’s most famous son, Robert Kett, led the 1549 peasants rebellion in protest of the enclosure of common land. With a force of mainly unarmed men, Kett was able to hold the City of Norwich for six weeks before being defeated by the King’s Forces. In 1615, Wymondham faced another threat, this time from a Great Fire that destroyed more than 300 properties including the Market Cross, the town hall and the vicarage. A new Market Cross was completed just two years later in 1617 and still stands proudly today. It now houses the Tourist information Centre. Wymondham Railway Station - featured as Walmington-on-Sea in the popular comedy series Dad’s Army - has been lovingly restored and has a very popular cafe and restaurant. Wymondham is also home to the prestigious Wymondham College - one of 36 state boarding schools in England. Notable former pupils include Norman Lamb MP, Stephen Byers MP, artist Colin Self and explorer and writer Nicholas Crane. The town’s 900-year-old Abbey was originally home to a community of Benedictine monks and is a spectacular building to visit. Wymondham Music Festival runs events from May, leading up to Festival Fortnight - Saturday, June 21st to Sunday, July 6th. Norfolk Schools’ Brass Band launches the summer music season in the Market Place on May 10th from 10-12noon. The annual Wymondham Town Busking Day follows on Saturday, May 24. Individuals and groups are very welcome, please ring 01953 333500 for further information. Musicians should check in at the Market Place on the day between 10-12noon. There’s a double-header on Saturday, May 31st. Multi instrumentalist Raevennan Husbandes, winner of Future Radio Next Big Thing (2012), is in the Market Place from 10am, supported by local singer-songwriter James Summerhill. Then at 7.30pm, Norwich Baroque presents The Bach Family and the Baroque Cello at Wymondham Abbey. Norwich Baroque, with Richard Tunnicliffe, principal cellist with The Avison Ensemble, celebrates the music of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-88) and Johann Bernhard Bach (1676-1749). The programme includes C P E Bach’s Cello Concerto in A major and J S Bach’s 3rd Brandenburg Concerto. local arts scene Wymondham Heritage Museum 2014
The museum in a former mid 19th century model prison tells stories of life in the building. Using a dungeon, police cells and items from the period, life in “Clink” is described. The collection on display spans the Stone Age to Modern Times. Using video, audio, photos, objects and documents hear and see the social, industrial and history of this Norfolk market town.This year, the Museum describes the effect World War One had on the town. With diaries, letters, photos and equipment loaned by relatives of those who fought, we can gain an insight into what life was like for those fighting and for those back at home. A VC winner, a house converted to a hospital, Gallipoli diaries, a dummy in 1916 uniform and details of where those who did not return are remembered, are all on display. Wymondham Symphony Orchestra
This friendly, lively and ambitious group of musicians play regular concerts at a variety of locations around Norfolk. Having built up an enviable reputation they are able to attract professional soloists of the highest calibre, as well as encouraging young talented soloists from Norfolk to play with them. Wymondham Symphony Orchestra are performing a concert in Wymondham Abbey on Saturday July 5th at 7.30pm as their contribution to this years Wymondham Music Festival. The concert marks a very special season for the WSO as it is the last of three concerts that will celebrate 30 years since the orchestra was founded. Exhibition of large scale Sculpture in 2 acres of rural gardens. With Paintings, Drawings, Prints, Collages & Ceramics, in the gallery. We have 30 Sculptors many of them showing four pieces each. We are building a Wood Henge in the garden and intend inviting everyone who is taking part to come to celebrate the sun rise on our wood henge on the twenty first of June at 4.30am. The Artists taking part in the garden are: Andy Campbell, Mike Chapman, Barry Watkins, Bridget Heriez, Rachel Long, Peter Talbot, Barbara Leaney, Georgina Warne, Kally Davidson, Mike Toll, Chedgey, Annette Inwood, Diane Maclean, Heather Green, Teucer Wilson, Andrew Schuman, Tim Nelson, Janice Burgoyne, Nicola Morris, Steve Kelly, Ann Richardson, Andrew Toll.
