Tracy Satchwill: Solo Exhibition Playful and theatrical artist Tracy Satchwill presents her first solo exhibition in her new home city of Norwich. The exhibition will showcase her brightly coloured works including a new collection based on fairytales and an Arts Council awarded Magna Carta Women project highlighting 800 years of women and their campaign for rights. Inspired by history and narratives, Tracy digitally collages original photographs with illustration, print and found objects. Costumes, props and scenes are created piece-by-piece, giving a unique process to her work. The exhibition runs from May 24th – June 4th at Anteros Art

Over Gallery: Iona Howard Exhibition In May, Over Gallery near Cambridge opens earth lines - a new exhibition of work by fine art printmaker Iona Howard. Her prints explore surface and line created over time through human interaction with the landscape. The earth lines exhibition features flat fenland vistas near her Cambridgeshire studio, and the softer lines of her native west Cornwall. After growing up on the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall, her father working as a sculptor in the beautiful Cornish serpentine stone, these days Iona can be found working out in the fenland near her home. Here the lines of history are more stark: temporary plough and crop lines change through the seasons, patterning the fenland bound in by lodes and banks. Iona’s landscapes are created through the process of carborundum printmaking. The initial plate is built up with acrylic binders and carborundum grit. This uncompromising surface is inked up. The print created has a highly embossed, surprisingly velvety texture of deep rich tones. To contrast the carborundum, Iona adds drypoint which provides fine incised lines. Artist Profile: Brett Day

Just three years ago, Beccles artist Brett Day had never picked up a paintbrush. But after he was forced to give up work due to ill health, Brett received a present that has quite literally changed his life. 'I'd been a house husband for about three months, when I found myself watching a video on YouTube of the late American artist Bob Ross,' he says. 'In it, he was explaining his work as he painted a picture. It got me thinking. My birthday was coming up so I asked my wife Kathleen to buy me some oil paints and a canvas as a present.' With little idea of what to do, Brett set to work painting a landscape of mountains and a lake. 'It was purely from imagination and it went much better than I ever thought it would,' says Brett. 'Having said that, I don't like it very much now when I look back at it!' Inspired, Brett began painting every day - and even putting videos of him working on YouTube and Facebook. 'I realised people loved watching tutorials and I started getting quite a few hits,' he says. After about six months of oil painting, Brett discovered spraypainting. 'My first spray painted work was done on a small, cheap canvas and the response I got was amazing,' he says. 'I began spray-painting every day.' Two years ago, Brett began to sell his work via Facebook and now takes regular commissions from fans. His work has been sold in 18 countries around the world so far.

'For me, that's the biggest reward,' says Brett.' It's amazing to think that my work is hanging in homes and businesses all over the world. Recently, I was contacted by a lady from Australia who had been suffering from depression. She'd watched one of my videos and it had inspired her to go out and spray paint her car.' Last year Brett began painting other objects such as bread bins and toy chests. Then, in October 2015, he was inspired to paint his wheelie bins. 'I just went to put the bins out like normal one day and I suddenly realised they were a blank canvas,' he says. Excited Brett painted all three and posted a video of his work online. He had no idea of what was about to happen. 'Normally my videos get about 3000-4000 views after a week,' says Brett. 'By the next day this video had 80,000 views. Later that night, that had increased to 250,000. WIthin a couple of days this had increased to a staggering 1 million views and I burst into tears.' To date, Brett's video has racked up 15 million shares. 'I love sharing my work with other people,' says Brett. 'I'd love to have my own art show on TV and I'm in talks with stations in this country and in the USA. Three years ago, if anyone had told me this is the path my life would follow I wouldn't have believed them. Giving my job up has been a blessing in disguise and I'm enjoying every moment of it.'

Peter, a long-term supporter of Action Medical Research, has helped to raise more than £70,000 for the charity with the popular Peter James Golf Classic in East Sussex which has been running for seven years. This is his first event for Action Medical Research in Suffolk – though hopefully it will have many sequels! The Ipswich branch of Waterstones will be selling Peter’s books at the event and he will be happy to sign them. His latest novel, Love You Dead, will be on sale and pre-orders for his upcoming book, Death Comes Knocking: Policing Roy Grace's Brighton, co-written with Graham Bartlett and due out in July, can also be taken. Coffee & aChat It takes a lot to impress Simon Cowell and magician Jamie Raven did just that on Britain's Got Talent last year. Now he's bringing his show to Norwich and is hoping to impress more than just the judges.

This year, Britain's Got Talent celebrates its tenth anniversary and is just as impressive, shocking and wacky as usual. For magician Jamie Raven, it has been the springboard he needed to launch his career through the roof. ' I had been doing magic professionally for ten years before I went on,' says Jamie. 'Everyone is aware of the impact Britain’s Got Talent can have. Rightly or wrongly, I had always thought magic didn’t get a fair shake on the show and I had thought about doing it but had decided against. Then an American magician won America’s Got Talent in the year that I did mine and I thought there might be a better chance, and in this country there was some wonderful work being done by magicians to make magic cool. So I went on the show and Simon Cowell said he ‘now believed in magic’ and I stood there thinking ‘Wow! This could change everything’, and it turns out it did!' After wowing the judges and audience alike, and finishing as series runner-up, Jamie went on to take his magic into the West End. 'I was invited to headline a show called The Illusionists and it was myself and six other performers who all had different areas of expertise,' says Jamie. 'That was at the Shaftesbury Theatre and it ran for seven and a half weeks and went on to become the most successful limited engagement they have ever had there, which is amazing. To have that honour and accolade was incredible.' But how did Jamie get into magic in the first place? 'My first experience was on a family holiday in India,' says Jamie. 'We were visiting some friends and a magician came over to our table. He did something that I have never seen any other magician do since, and he said afterwards ‘if you are interested I can teach you a couple of the tricks’. So there was myself

Later, years down the line on a holiday in Spain, a friend showed me a card trick based on maths and my repertoire increased by 33 per cent! Then as I got a bit older, I got a little job when I was at school and there were magic shops in London and whenever I had saved up £5 or £10 I could go and buy a book, and that’s how it started. The ball started rolling. It was a hobby that I am very lucky has become a living.' Jamie is now taking his illusions on the road with a country wide tour. 'We are kicking off on June 16 in Cardiff and going up and down England and are coming to Norwich Theatre Royal on June 21 – and it’s going to be a mixture of all sorts of magic,' says Jamie. 'We are trying to tick all the boxes, so there’ll be some of the close up side of magic, which is my favourite to perform, and there’ll be some of the bigger scale illusions. There’ll be a little bit of mind-reading. There’ll be some audience participation, so a couple of routines where we’ll be getting people up out of the audience to come up. If you have one favourite area of magic, you’ll be catered for.' And it turns out Jamie is no stranger to Norfolk. 'My uncle and my auntie and their kids live in Swaffham. They have a hotel there and so I come to Norwich periodically, sadly only for a bite to eat, but when we come in June we will make a bit of a day out. I’m a culture vulture and I hear you have a cathedral here, so I’ll go and have a little look around.'

Celebrating Creativity

From June 3rd to 12th, the Great Yarmouth Arts Festival brings together an amazing variety of art and entertainment. The beautiful Breydon water provides the inspiration for this years Art in the Minster and also a new musical play ‘Breydon Crowther’ which will be performed for the first time. There will be several art trails across the town, including one in honour of local artist John Dashwood’s work, and special exhibitions at Skippings Gallery and the library among others. The Minster once again plays host to several musical performances including a special concert to celebrate the Queens 90th birthday. Ballet Theatre UK is returning to St. George’s Theatre to perform a live ballet version of Pinocchio and two musicians cover 600 years of musical history in 90 minutes. A screening of Aida from the Paris Opera house, an afternoon with Roy Hudd, two comedy shows and the Richie Paris Richie folk band are also among the highlights at this wonderful venue. Building on the success of last year’s ‘Mammoth Parade’ this year’s carnival procession ‘Halfway to Paradise’ promises to be even bigger and better involving many more local people on a colourful journey around the town. Linking with the Time and Tide museum’s 1950’s and 60’s themed exhibition of the same name, ‘Halfway to Paradise’ kick starts an entertaining day of town centre activity with the popular Community Fair taking place at the library and an array of performances in and around the market place and St George’s Plaza including a battle of the buskers competition. There will be guided walks showcasing Yarmouth’s fabulous heritage and many creative workshops for local people of all ages to get involved in. Visitors to the Norfolk Broads are in for a treat this month with the fantastic Broads Outdoors Festival offering up a fortnight of events. The Outdoors Festival is a celebration of the wealth of activities on offer within the Broads National Park and has become a staple on its calendar. Now in its sixth year, the festival runs from May 7th to 22nd and for the first time will feature a Broadland Artisans open studio throughout the 16 days as well as the usual offering of landscape painting classes and other arts and crafts events. Broadland Artisans features a range of artists and crafts people showing off their creations at a studio at Swift Cottage in Neatishead.
