Welcome to Aylsham A Market Town Situated in the heart of North Norfolk since before the Norman Conquest, you will find the country market town of Aylsham. Main routes from Norwich to the coast and King’s Lynn skim its edge, and a network of lanes will lead you to the villages in the wider area. With the famous Norfolk Broads, the North Norfolk Coast and the magnificent cathedral city of Norwich only ten miles away in each direction, and the gently

The market has always been an important part of Aylsham life. In the early Middle Ages, markets would have been held in the churchyard, but as this was forbidden in 1285, the market place (which is owned by the National trust as part of the Blickling

Aylsham’s History Several have the characteristic Dutch gables reflecting the early close links between East Anglia and what is now Holland. The Black Boys public house was probably built in the 17th century; its present frontage dates to between 1710 and 1720; the coach entry from the market place to the stable yard at the back was blocked up in the I930's to be replaced by what is now the bar. Originally, traffic between Norwich and Cromer would be carried along Red Lion street and along Hungate which has cobbled edges, rather than pavements. There were many yards off Hungate where people lived in crowded and cramped conditions. The John Soame Memorial Pump is a distinctive feature of the town. Until 1911 townsfolk drew their water from private wells which carried the risk of contamination. The John Soame pump was offered to the town as a memorial to John Soame and is 170 feet deep. Piped water supply finally reached the town in 1938.

workhouse for up to 80 inmates. In 1848-9, a new workhouse for up to 600 inmates was built at Aylsham, situated to the west of the town. It cost approximately £7,500 and was designed by William J Donthorn. The workhouse building then became St Michael's Hospital. The landmark Church of St Michael and All Angels was constructed in the late 13th century with the tower and south porch added in the 14th. The lower part of the rood screen survived with Puritan reformers, although some of the panels were disfigured. The graveyard is also the final resting place of

meeting room for the church choir and for the WI. Local residents recall the choir sitting around an organ with a stove for warmth. Refreshments for meetings were often prepared on a gas stove. One resident vividly recalls being lifted through the window by the vicar to unlock the door from the inside to assist a group who had been locked out! Now the centre houses themed exhibitions which change annually. The archive collection of around 4000 photographs is also available for visitors to view. The centre is also home to a tourist information point giving information about local

A community that cares for itself Aylsham & District Care Trust (ADCT) is a non-profit making charity (founded in 1985 by Rees Coghlan MBE). Rees recognised some of the challenges faced by older people in the community and worked with others to find ways to ameliorate loneliness. He believed that it could be possible for local volunteers to provide help and support for those that needed it, he wanted to create ‘A community that cares for itself’. This work is still going strong more than 30 years later and there are now nearly 150 volunteers.

community. You can call in for coffee and home made cake or have one of the lovely daily special home cooked lunches. There is plenty of parking outside.

The completion of the ADCT Centre in 2012 made it possible to further expand the services offered, to include counselling for anyone over the age of 18, support for people living with dementia and their carers, outings to places of interest, an arts and crafts group, lunch clubs providing over 500 meals each month and a range of transport services, making at least 2000 journeys each month. New services are introduced in response to local need, for example a Personal Assistant service has recently been launched, this might include providing help with light housework, shopping, help to prepare meals and befriending. This new service is a further example of support which helps people to live independently in their own homes for longer. A day care service has also been introduced at Green Lane View in Aylsham on Wednesdays. The charity has recently expanded to the North Walsham area and runs care services from Meeting Hill and St Nicholas Church Hall. The ADCT Centre also houses the Orange Blossom CafĂŠ which is open from Monday to Friday to everyone in the

As with most small charities, trying to find the money to continue this crucially important work is a huge challenge. Income is secured through the receipt of fees for services, room hire, corporate support, individual gifts and donations from the community or grant making trusts. One strand of income that has really helped to maintain and develop the services is when someone leaves a donation in their will. This has made all the difference. Please consider ADCT if you are making a will.

If you would like to find out more about ADCT, please look at the website www.aylshamcaretrust.co.uk or call Alison on 01263 733385 or pop in and see us at The ADCT Centre.

can be expressed in many ways and means different things to different people. It has a family feel, a strong focus on relationships, a very positive approach to education, and a strong connection to St Michael’s Church. The School cultivates and nurtures care and respect, and has a constant drive to improve, for our own sakes and for those of our children and families. St Michael’s School becomes a Primary and Nursery in September 2018. Governors’ intentions in making both these changes are • to maintain the proud tradition of St Michael’s as a Church of England School with a strong and distinctive ethos • to provide the very best education we can for the children in our School • to preserve and increase meaningful parental choice in the primary phase in Aylsham • and to build upon our strong bond with the local Church community. Our School was built in 1848 on land belonging to an early grammar School founded by Robert Jannys, a rich merchant from Norwich. A hundred years later the Church of England relinquished aspects of the School’s administration to the Local Education Authority, making it a Voluntary Controlled School. Then in January 2017 we changed status and became a Voluntary

both Foundation Stage and Key Stage One. Forest School times help children develop self-esteem, independence and selfconfidence and develop new skills, but they are also fun and ideal for getting vital exercise and fresh air. We see children become more courageous and considerate. We see them learn to work with others and respect the world around them. We see that the Forest School experience has a really positive impact on work in the classroom, as well as their well-being. St Michael’s School continues to develop in many exciting ways so that it can go on providing a rich and happy experience for all our children. John of Gaunt Infant & Nursery School Tel: 01263 732844 www.johngaunt.norfolk.sch.uk John of Gaunt is part of the Aylsham Learning Federation which provides education for children from ages 3 to 16. We are very lucky to have some beautiful grounds surrounding our school and we have a designated woodland area where we do lots of outdoor learning. Contact: 01692 403258 Website: www.sacredheartnorthwalsham.com Quakers in Aylsham The term ‘Quaker’ was a nickname applied in the 17th Century to the reformers associated with what became known as The Religious Society of Friends. Today we are an open community who share a way of life, not a set of beliefs. Our unity is based on shared understanding and a shared practice of silent worship - a communal stillness where anyone present may be led to speak. We seek to experience God directly - internally, in relationships with others, and with the world. Our Meeting is one element in a network across the country. All offer a welcome to anyone who might wish to attend. Quakers try to put their faith into action by living with honesty and integrity. This means speaking the truth to all, including people in positions of power. Our commitment to peace arises from the conviction that love is at the heart of existence and that all human beings are unique and equal. For further information see www.quaker.org.uk Our meeting house is located in Peggs Yard, off Red Lion Street. Accessible for the disabled. Worship 10.30-11.30 on Sundays.

“Supporting Commerce and Community” Photo: Adam Payne Photography

Previously known as the Aylsham Traders, Aylsham Business and Enterprise Forum (ABEF) is the local Chamber of trade supporting businesses, organisations and charities in and around Aylsham. Following the receipt of Portus money a few years ago it was decided that, as a bustling Cittislow town with an abundance of diverse businesses, organisations, clubs and societies, the local business chamber should be rounded and supportive to all organisations. We have found that in a thriving town like Aylsham the more traditional business chamber needed to be updated to support, communicate and benefit as a forum. In JUNE 2016 we were so excited to launch the Aylsham App that has and will continue to be funded by ABEF. The founder of the App, Adam Payne from Norfolk Geeks, is an avid supporter of local businesses, clubs and societies. Aylsham has so much to offer and the App is an innovative way to source information about local businesses discounts and local events. By becoming a member of ABEF your business will also be added to the App which offers extremely competitive advertising for your business. As a chamber and forum, we have a varied program of meetings including business breakfasts, networking events and talks by local experts on a wide range of subjects. We are proud of our slow food town and believe that our forum helps facilitate business to business interaction alongside the community organisations so members can gain support and build on local connections. We believe that working together on projects such as car parking, town signs, events, planning matters, charity events and this year’s GoGoHares and more keeps Aylsham as special and vibrant as it is. The aim of all of our members is to strive to increase the footfall both in the town centre and for out of town businesses. We work with the Town Council and District Council to ensure that Aylsham has a voice in matters affecting businesses and organisations within the local area and to support and promote our town. If you are not a member or you are new to Aylsham please do not hesitate to come and find us on the contact details below. The website includes more information, a list of current members and any incentives. Our membership is currently £60.00 per year which includes advertising on the Aylsham App and on the ABEF website.
