Welcome to Cromer Norfolk. I would recommend undertaking the feat of climbing the 150 steps to the top to see the most fantastic views of Cromer, our beautiful hinterlands and the surrounding towns and villages. We have an award winning traditional Seaside Pier It is an honour for me, as Mayor of Cromer, to introduce this town guide and welcome you to our beautiful town.

to live in Cromer 365 days a year, I’m sure you’ll agree it’s a great place. I love seeing and welcoming all of our visitors from both near and far all year round. Since the advent of large hotels and the railway in the 1880s, Cromer has been a very popular destination for holiday makers. Sitting on the very edge of the beautiful North Norfolk coast we are famous for our fishing, and of course, the delicious Cromer Crab. You can see the world famous Cromer Crab being brought ashore most mornings by the fishermen at the bottom of the Gangway next to the Henry Blogg museum. You can learn more about the Cromer lifeboats and RNLI distinguished history here and at the Cromer museum in the town centre, where you can also learn about the history of the rest of the town. Cromer is a recognised ‘Walkers are Welcome’ town. If you enjoy a good walk then there are many public footpaths surrounding the town offering stunning scenery, Cromer offers more than a stroll on the beach! The town itself is full of thriving independent shops, galleries, cafes, restaurants, takeaways, pubs and accommodation. There’s truly something for everyone! It’s been said that 'a trip to Norfolk is good for the soul' and I'm sure after your stay you will understand this. Whether you are here on holiday, a long weekend or a day trip from nearby, on behalf of everyone in Cromer, we hope you have a lovely visit to our town. Tim Adams Mayor of Cromer 2015-2017

Instead, we read of Shipden, a town that now lies beneath the sea. In medieval times we read of Cromer, alias Shipden. The natural break in the cliffs now known as the Gangway was the centre of the town, with fishermen and merchants plying their trade from the beach below, and sheep farmers keeping their flocks on the hills behind the town.

The trading vessels of Cromer continued to land on its open beach until almost the end of the 19th century, when the railways offered a more efficient means of transport. Undoubtedly sea trade declined over the centuries, with the general decline in the importance of the county of Norfolk as a centre for the wool industry. Fishing continued

In the 1920s motor lifeboats began to take over from the pulling and sailing boats. The building of the pierhead station at Cromer meant that the lifeboat could launch in almost any weather, and Cromer took over responsibility for much of the coastline to the east, and in particular for the Haisboro' Sands. our school has been consistently rated as ‘good’ by Ofsted. The school has a purpose built Nursery which takes babies from eight weeks old to four years and at this point the children transfer over to the main school which admits children in the September preceding their fourth birthday. The Nursery offers five sessions of differing times to suit the needs of our parents, including two three hour sessions, which also includes day care. The Nursery is divided into three rooms for each different age group; staff have a wealth of experience and are well qualified. In the main school we have three form entry which means we have nine classrooms, a library and a specialist resource base (SRB) for children who have speech and language difficulties. The SRB supports children within the mainstream community. All teaching areas make the most of new technologies which enhances teaching and learning. The school is set in beautiful grounds with an area for Forest schools, adventure playground and gym trail. There is a football pitch, long jump and shaded areas on our playground. We are currently rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted with Outstanding Behaviour and Safety. Whil de Neve has been Headteacher since 2013. Many of our children start Year 3 after Suffield Park Infant and Nursery School and most of our Year 6 children transfer to Cromer Academy. We are fortunate to have a modern building that is very well equipped as a modern learning environment. The outside area has exciting play areas to keep children busy outside of the classroom. We teach a broad curriculum, enhanced by frequent visitors and visits. Our ASD Base (Autistic Spectrum Disorder Specialist Resource Base) is extremely successful in providing a top quality experience for children that join us from a wide catchment area. Students at Cromer Academy take part in many community-based activities. These include community service, supporting charity events and organising events with local primary schools. Parents, carers and members of the local community are also encouraged to come into the school throughout the academic year, which is vital in ensuring that the local community is invested in the school and gives an opportunity to showcase the outstanding work completed by our students.

The Principal of Cromer Academy, Dr Geoff Baker, the students and the staff are always interested in ways of engaging with the local community. If you would like to know more about the school or just want to come in and see what has changed then

Music, film and drama also play a part in Cromer life with the town's grade-II listed pier providing a home to the Pavilion Theatre which offers a wide variety of theatre and music productions throughout the year including the famous End of the Pier Show. The town is also popular with national broadcast companies. The 2013 film Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa was filmed extensively on the pier and in 2014 David Walliams was in town filming a BBC Agatha Christie series. In early 2017, Cromer hit international headlines when more than 7 million people viewed a YouTube clip of a famous Bollywood movie filmed on Cromer Pier. | 31

The ILB (inshore lifeboat) is kept in the renovated 1902 boathouse at the bottom of the Gangway. The ILB covers inshore services for swimmers and small boat sailors up to its flank stations at Sheringham and Happisburgh. The Cromer lifeboats have a long and distinguished service, with the names Henry Blogg, Henry 'Shrimp' Davies and Richard Davies standing out as long serving coxswains and Lewis 'Tuna' Harrison and Dr Paul Barclay amongst those we remember

The lifeboat station at the end of the pier can be visited most of the year. It is normally manned from 10am to 4pm from Easter through to October, although it is often open at additional times. Groups wishing to visit should contact the Lifeboat Visitors Officer by emailing visitcromerlifeboats@hotmail.co.uk. The shop at the pier lifeboat station offers a wide range of presents, including many of specific local interest.
